In the same format as Lily's movie thread. Post reviews for manga, manhwa, manhana, comic strips, graphic novels, ect. I am going to request that if you are doing a lesser-known comic that you post a link to scanalation or official site and that if you haven't read the whole serise, you say that somewhere in your review.

I should write some reviews, since I started the thread, but I'll do that later.

Kage says: i don't know if we are allowed to post links to scanslations Mahou... I highly doubt it though. So for now... that line is going to be... striked
Mahou: I think if it is unlisensed you are allowed but the ToS page isn't working for me. The have scanslation sites in the link list, I don't think they would let that if they weren't allowed.

Anyway this is the the format I'll be using, I'm putting it here so I can copy/paste it. If anyone else wants to use it they can do the same.

Mahou Sensei Negima / Magister Negi Magi
Genre: Romance/Comedy/Magic
Volumes: 6+ (Unfinished)
Review: The lastest work from Love Hina creator Ken Akamatsu, Negima follows the story of wizard-in-training Negi. Negi is 10yrs old and his task set before him by the Wizard Academy is to become a teacher in Japan. Of course, his class is nothing but girls that range from a blood sucking Vampire, to an android, to a quiet library girl. Negi now has to not only hide his magic secret, but also fight off the horde of girls fighting for him. Lots of comedy and hints of romance fill this manga series. Of course, panty shots and magical combat are also abundant. Definitely a great buy.

Elfen Lied (Not Released in US)
Genre: Romance/Suspense/Horror
Volumes: 7+ (Unfinished)
Review: This manga is nothing short of horrible in comparison to the anime. The anime was a wonderful series with excellent artwork, drama, and bloodshed. The manga, although released first, contains terrible artwork with almost no background work. The action scenes also serve up rather blandly and don't provide and kind of enthusiasm. It's almost as if the artist was being forced to draw it. If your a fan of the anime then avoid the manga at all costs.
Rating: 4/10

Saikano / Saishu Heiki Kanojo
Genre: Romance/Drama/Mech/War
Volumes: 7 (1-4 Released in US)
Review: Saikano is a tale of wartime drama between two high-school students. Suiji is an average teenage guy who starts to date Chise, an average teenage girl. While Suiji is tough looking and quiet he's actually pretty sentimental on the inside. Chise is slow and clumsy both inside and out. However, Chise is taken by the Japanese Defense Force and is turned into what is known as The Ultimate Weapon. Basically her body sprouts big mechanical wings out her back, her arm turns into a big freakin cannon, and her body metamorphically generates missles, ammo, ect. Not a bad deal until something inside of her breaks and she begins to lose her mind. Now she lives only as a weapon and Suiji has to struggle to keep her human. Just to warn the younger crowd, lots of war-style violence as well as heavily depicted sex scenes are covered in this manga. Still, by following the story of this anime, you will find it to be an excellent series. Also, news has it of a 2 DVD OVA soon to be released. Look forward to it! mrgreen

I'll do more later. I gotta go to work now. I hope this was informative. biggrin

Neon Genesis Evangelion
Genre: Suspense/Sci-Fi/Mecha/Religious
Volumes: 9
Review: The manga delivers the same great story and design that the anime originally blessed us with. However, what the manga gives us that the anime doesn't is very very noteworthy: MORE INFORMATION. The manga provides a much deeper view into the meanings of everything in the Eva storyline as well as a few scenes that happen aside from the main story. Religious symbolism, the in-depth view of human emotion and existence, and a lot of cool robot vs. monster action are all covered. If you're a fan of the Eva series then you owe it to yourself to pick this manga series up.
Rating: 10/10

To Heart
Genre: High School/Romance
Volumes: 3
Review: A good manga that spawned from a good anime that spawned from a great series of dating-sim games. To Heart is a very short yet quite fulfilling manga that covers the blossoming relationship between Hiroyuki and Akari. With help from their high school friends Multi (a robot maid), Lemmy, and others, they finally overcome their nervousness and get together. The artwork is cutesy style and makes the high-school students look like they're in elementary but it works out once you get used to it. If you need a fun and affordable series to take on a trip, then To Heart is your ticket.
Rating: 7/10

Ai Yori Aoshi
Genre: Romance/Comedy
Volumes: 9+ (Unfinished)
Review: Ai Yori Aoshi is a story that follows the hidden romance between Kaoru Hanabishi and Aoi Sakuraba. The two are to be wed but are forced to keep their love a secret in fear of sabotage to Sakuraba Conglomerate since Kaoru is from a lower status. The two live with Ms.Miyabi in a hotel style mansion and soon a number of characters come to inhabit the residence. The American Tina, the cute little Chika, and the clumsy yet determined Taeko all make for a very lovable cast. The only disappointment that I find in the manga is the overexposure of what be called "fan-service." While a short depiction of nudity from time to time is bearable, this manga seems to go out of it's way to portray the female characters fully exposed at every opportunity and it really only serves to destroy the innocent story that lies underneath. Without the senseless nudity, perhaps this title would have received a better rating.

Title: Johnny the Homiceal Manic (Directors Cut)
Type: American graphic novel
Genre: drama/horror
Creator: Jhonnen Vasquez
American Company: Slave Labor Graphics
Read: 1/1 (complete)
Review: I didn't write a summay simply because Johnny is a very personal comic, and I don't want to impose my interpretation of the plot on anyone. All the characters are very well defined and seem to represent the different aspects of all humans. There are some questions that the creator proposly left unanswered. Maybe because there aren't answers to everything in life or maybe he just wanted to leave it up to the reader.
It's not for everyone, to read it one must be able to atleast tolerate intense graphic violence and long philishocial monolouges. But those who can will catch a glimpes of the human mind at work.

Title: Garfield: In the Mood for Food
Type: Comic Strip, selection
Genre: comedy
Creator: Jim Davis
American Company: Baltine Books
Summary: Watch Garfeild eat food and grow fatter!
Review: This selection is just a rehashed version of a bunch of comics, completely useless if you have the collections. It does provide some ocassional laughes, but the humor is generally sophomoric, which is traditional of the franchise.

Shoujo Jackpot continues...

Title: Hand Off! (Sono te Wo Doker)
Type: manga
Genre: drama/comedy
Creator: Kasane Katsumoto
American Company: Tokyopop
Read: 3/8
Summary: Kotarou Oohira, effeminate bishounen and basketball fanatic, moves in with his Grandpa in Tokyo to attend a coed school whose students he hopes will be less ... judgmental than his all-boys school in he country.
Kotarou's aloof cousin Tatsuki Oohira, also living with Grandpa, immediately gives Kotarou a hard time due to the fact that Kotarou unknowingly gave Tatsuki an unsettling postcognition when the two of them were children.
Along with the help of Yuuto, a friendly classmate with the ability to see emotional auras around others, the three end up finding themselves in some dangerous mysteries surrounding their school and members of the community. Tatsuki and Yuuto find out their respective ESP abilities are heightened when they touch Kotarou, so they don't hesitate to do so when tracking down kidnappers and the like. Since Kotarou isn't informed that Tatsuki and Yuuto have psychic powers, he reacts like most teenage boys to the physical contact -- he screams, and hits, and tells them where they can put their slimy hands. And so our story is born ...
Review: Often mistaken for shounen-ai, the only boy's love in this manga is plutonic. The stories are episodic, but entertaining. Kotarou seems to be one big danger magnite. The majoy characters are well developed but I sometimes wonder why the grandfather is rarely seen.

Title: Hiatari Ryoukou
Type: manga
Genre: romance/comedy/sports
Creator: Mitsuru Adachi
American Company: N/A (the scanalator that I read it from, still hasn't taken down FMA despite it being liscense and released. Until they do, I won't post their link)
Read: 5/5 (complete)
Summary: Kasumi Kushimoto has a boyfriend oversees and is starting high school, but since the school is far away from her house, she is staying at her aunt's bording house where she finds herself face to face with four male housemates! When she and Yuusaku Taksugi accidently see each other naked, she burns him an effigey, but soon she attracted to his boyish charm.
Review: Despite how it may sound, there are no bishounen in this manga and the only fanserive happens in the first two chapters. It was published in two seperate magazines and it is pretty obvious. The first 3/4's are slow paced, slice of life drama, with comdedic characters and love triangles. The last fourth puts the romance on hold until the last chapter, and mainly foucouses on short, situational comedy with the supporting cast. If it had ended after it finished in the first magazine, I would have given it a higher rating.
3.8/5

Title: Candy Candy
Type: manga
Genre: romance/historical drama
Creator: Kyoko Mizuki and Yumiko Igarashi
American Company: N/A ( scanalator )
Read: 9/9 complete
Summary: Candice White is an ophen who one day meets a young Scottish baggpiper while she was upset. She calls him her prince, but she never sees him again. She hopes to get adopted and have a family of her own, but instead she gets taken in as a compainion for a rich brat who always plays mean tricks on her but soon she befriends the neighbors who make her world a little brighter.
Review: I had a hard time writting a summary for this. There is no real comfined plot, it simply follows a good twenty years of this girls life. The cast of characters is broad and each one is unique. As Candy passed through all the stages of her life, the reader finds theirself wanting Candy to find happiness.
Created in 1975, it was one of the difnintive early shoujo titles but it will probally never make it to American shores due to it's copyright issues. Article

Shoujo Jackpot, part III:

Title: Ion
Type: manga
Genre: romance/comedy
Creator: ??
American Company: N/A scanalator
Read: 1/1 complete
Summary: Ion repeates a chant and make good things happen. She alwys swears she will only fall in love with a man who is deticated to his dream, then one day she meets a boy who is deterimined to start a physic powers club.
Review: This comic is just confusing. The plot is paper thin and the gags seem to jumpy. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed it, but "good" isn't a word I'd use to describe it.
2/5

Title: Misty Boy
Type: manga
Genre: romance
Creator: Ikeno Koi
American Company: N/A scanalator
Read: 1/1 complete
Summary: 19 year old University student Suzune is currently living alone as her Father is working away and her Mother has gone to join him. Is it alright for a young woman to live with a 15 year old boy? More importantly can Suzune keep herself from becoming attracted to her handsome "cousin"?!
Review: The begining was actually quite suspenseful. You'll be guessing what "Yumma's" real intentions are.

Title: Love Love Shock
Type: manga
Genre: romance
Creator: ??
American Company: N/A scanalator
Read: 1/1
Summary: Natsukawa Mei is a Grade 9 girl who wants to become a singer. She has a good voice but has never succeeded in auditions. Before she becomes a singer, she wants to meet a certain boy again.
She sat beside him once in summer school 2 years ago, and has had a crush on him since then. She watched him all the time, and gave him chocolate on Valentine's Day, but was rejected because he thought she was a boy (she had shot hair, and her voice was husky at the time because of a cold).
She is walking with her 'manager' (her friend Mayuka) one day after another unsuccessful audition when they see a popular band appearing on a big-screen TV on the side of a building. The singer is the boy Mei loves, and it turns out he's the vocalist of the hottest new band, Sonic Boom. Her next audition is for a position with his company, and Mei is determined to get the spot.
Review: The heroin is the typical shy shoujo lead but intresting side characters make it and entertaining read.
2.5/5

Title: Pink Misty
Type: manhana
Genre: romance
Creator: ??
American Company: N/A scanalator
Read: 1/1 complete
Summary: Fourteen year old Fen Hong is a fan of Mist, a boy artist who
came out a year ago and swept the world with his music. When Fen Hongs
father leaves her in alone Taiwan she is forced to live with Zhou Zhen Quans family. Zhou Zhen Quen has a miserable attitude toward Fen, who has known him since she was a child. When she hears a Mist song being played in the house, she suspects that Zhou Zhen Quan is a fan of Mist too. Things get more complicated the longer they live together! And though Zhou Zhen Quan acts as if he hates Fen, how does he really feel?
Review: I'm not sure that the Chinese equivelent to "shoujo" is but I'm sure this is it.
It is two short stories. The first one had me guessing at first but it didn't take too long to unravle Zhou Zen Quan's feelings. The second story seems to be inspired by the Sailor Moon S movie but didn't really take off at all.
2.5/5

That's all folks!

Title: Marmalade Boy
Type: manga
Genre: romance/comedy
Creator: Wataru Yoshizumi
American Company: Tokyopop
Read: 8/8
Summary: Miki Koishikawa's world is turned upside down when her parents tell her they are divorcing, swapping partners and are all going to live together under one roof. It's hard enough being a teenager, but dealing with new parents, a cute step-brother and all her friends' problems is almost too much to take!
Review: This is proabally one of the most well-done high school shoujo I've seen. I wasn't too impressed at first, but it grew on me.
The characters weren't increibly orginal but the way they reacted with eachother really brings the story together.
I do have some issues witht he artwork. Yoshizumi rarely draws the background and uses simple character disigns.
Anyone who likes high school romance should get atleast some enjoyment out of this.
