Edit: I just found out a few weeks ago Vodafone is called Softbank now.
Strange.
Japanese Cellphones are so much more exciting (in my opinion) than anything we have elsewhere.
They have so many different models too!
I would have liked to have bought one while in Japan, but several stores (non - official, only carriers of the major service providers) said that the Japanese government made some sort of law that extends to foreigners not residing in the country that restricts them from any purchasing / selling / obtaining a keitai.
They're soo cool :0 They're a little heavier, but have excellent camera's and high tech features.
Some of the service providers include: NTT Docomo, Vodafone, AU (KDDI), TU-KA (I haven't seen this one that much), etc.
Has anyone else seen Japan's cellphones before?

@Aiko, Rindi, Anyone else in Japan: Out of curiosity, how does the service plan work there? Is it a yearly subscription/package, or payment by minute outside of pay as you go phones.

Oh I know!!! The AQUOS phone sounds fun... 予想外デス。Ah, love that CM. I know someone who even had something like Photoshop (not quite, but similar) on the cell phone! Now that's amazing. No wonder everyone's on their cell phone all the time. xd

Keitai are smaller and a thousand times more awesome than American cell phones. xd I know that foreigners can't get a plan unless they are resident aliens, like my friend who works for an airline over there. My friends when I studied abroad got prepays that were still pretty darn awesome. I used to find it hilarious when we would go to tourist spots and there would be a crowd of Japanese tourists all standing in a clump taking the same photo with their phones in the air. Rarely did I see a Japanese person with an actual camera. rofl

yeah, big phones^^
in france, i have a japanese cell phone (some of the cellphones here work also in japan and viceversa) and i admit it is better than the average cell phones here.
but when i am in japan, i use another cell phone which is.. completely normal sweatdrop it doesn't even have a camera. i guess it's because i use a prepaid one!

Uh, yeah, I have a prepaid phone (same as [choco.banana]'s, actually), and it's not exciting at all. Some of my friends have really cool ones that included cameras and net access - very handy for looking up train schedules on the fly.
Of course, I have to buy minutes for my phone (comes in the form of prepaid cards that you can find at convenience stores), but most phones come with a yearly plan that involves a set number of minutes and additional charges if you go over. Extra charges for internet and texting, etc. Pretty similar to the US, I imagine. A bunch of the summer interns got nice phones with year-long plans because the cancelling fee isn't that bad, considering all the cool bells and whistles that you get with a decent phone.
This whole discussion reminds me that my minutes are set to expire this week and I should go buy some more. >_<

I heart Japanese phones. I have a DoCoMo 902i series it it rocks. Its got a 4 megapixel cammera, integrated MS World, Excel, Adobe and Flash as well as a full set of games (i was just playing mega man 2 this morning). Its interesting to note that cellphones in Japan use email address rather than SMS numbers to send messages to eachother. Because inputing and addresss into your phone takes a very long time, everyone just uses "sekigaisen" (lit. inferred tranfer) to exchange numbers and emails.
Japanese phones are also very very expensive. The average phone bill is about $100/month and you are only alotted a few minuits a month to talk before being charged. If you call long distance, to different phone companies, peek hours or two land lines you get charged even more. Interesting to note that its actually cheaper to call from Japan to the US than it is to call from a domestic Japan number to another Japan number! No wonder everyone always is furiously typing emails.

There phones are so awesome! I love the keychain they put on them too. I have a keychain from Japan that I put on my cellphone and it's cute!

I have a question: when you sign up for a plan for a keitai in japan, do you buy the phone when you get the plan, and then if you cancell, do you keep the phone?

DoCoMo isn't a brand..it's a service provider 3nodding Megaman: I think you have to pay for the phone when you activate it with a plan, but from what I hear, sometimes you can keep it afterwards. :/ I don't know, they're really strict about it is all I know. I have a model that a lady at a denki gave me last year in Japan that was old...but it's like a toy xD.

Actually, DoCoMo technically is a brand because they design all of their own phones in conjunction with major manufactures like Sony-Ericsson, Fujitsu, Motorola, etc. You can always keep your phone but if you have Vodafone/Softbank or DoCoMo you can just switch out the UIM (like a SIM card) into the new phone. au-KDDI and Wilcom whipe your phone when you deactivate but you can generally keep it with you even after the service is done with
