Today Steve Irwin, our wally of an Australian icon has died. His chest was pierced by a stingray barb whilst he was filming for his new TV show. He died instantly.
I thought it best to establish a thread just to remember the Australian vernacular hyperbole. It's a shock to the nation, lest we forget.

This is the stuff legends are made of people.
If he had become an old man and faded away, he would have also faded in our memories. To go like this, in the prime of his life, wrestling a bloody stingray... It's legendary.

I think Steve Irwin has just been immortalized the same way Elvis was in the U.S. A cult celibrity icon, once amazingly popular in his home country but latter earning more fame world wide, having become the centre of some rather negative media attention and criticism, before almost withdrawing from the limelight, then dies before he can reach old age, thus stereotying him forever as the 'croc hunter'. It's also curious to note that he died at the age Elvis did. We mightn't have loved him in life, but I think we'll all mourn for his death.

I'm not really mourning. I just feel kinda... proud. Which is weird, because he always kinda annoyed me. You know, he was over the top. But after this, my respect for him has gone +10.
If he just faded away, he would have evenutally been forgotten. But now he's gonna become legendary like bloody Ned Kelly. They'll put up memorials to him and make a movie about his last stand.
I don't think anyone's gonna go start hunting stingrays. Everyone knows they're pretty harmless. I heard on tv before that there's only one other reported death from a stingray. It's just so unlucky... he got hit right in the heart! Like probably the only place you could get stung and die from it, unless it got him in they eye or something. He was just doing something he really shouldn't have, swimming directly above a large stingray in shallow water - They don't like things swimming above them, especially when they can't move any further down.

i cant get over the whole stingy ray thing!! xp xp it's a stingy ray, i've kicked one before accidentally and it just swam off, usually you just leave em alone and they do nothing..... like.... they're gentle creatures you know.... kinda like jelly fish with out tenticles.....

I agree. I thought the stingray was a docile animal. Sure its sting is quite potent but I never imagined it could pierce a man's chest in an instant. Looks like ppl will avoid all the waters that contain stingrays for now on, 'cos if the invincible croc hunter couldn't survive then, then who can?

...Pretty much everyone actually.
A few people get stung each year, but usually it's in the foot or leg because they've accidentally stepped on one. It hurts like hell but it doesn't kill them.
I've patted one before. They feel funny.
