S.H.R. Agency Did things get worse? Kimo had certainly kept his promise about being around for his "wailua ahi," as he fondly called Daniel when they were training or talking about more serious day-to-day things. As a matter of fact, he acted as a sort of father-figure and took a great interest in whatever the boy might be involved in that he was invited to take an interest. The problem...the problem had been this unbearable past month. Kimo was a busy man already with all of his surfing, teaching classes, practicing, and competing. He was used to that, and had done well with keeping his schedule complementary to Daniel's at first. Then he had a brother, sister-in-law, and his three little nieces come for a visit. That was supposed to be a week thing...it'd turned into a nightmare for the surfer when two fighting little nieces had knocked him from the stairs and he'd earned a broken leg. His brother, oh so sorry for the incident, decided to stay along with his family to cater to Kimo... Which, to him, meant house-arrest while at first he felt smothered by his sister-in-law's attentions and once he got the parents out of the house, he ended up babysistting little girls while they enjoyed their extended vacation. He finally convinced them to leave, but only after the same little girl manage to set his kitchen on fire. The only upside was that he'd gotten paid for his tortures. And this day, feeling happy and free for the first time in weeks, Kimo had just pulled up to little Daniel's house...only to find what he immediately recognized as a government car. "Oh no..nonono...Not Daniel! Over my dead body!" the man grumbled as he jerked out his keys and jumped out of the car, hobbling as quickly as he could to the house. He knocked loudly on the door, then rang the doorbell twice...the general greeting he gave to let Daniel know he was visiting. -------------------------- Inside, it was the meeting that Kimo feared it to be. Secret Agent Rory Dews was having a serious conversation with Daniel's parents about the boy and the implications of his powers.

Things had gotten steadily better for Daniel. His parents, while nice in their own way, had mostly dismissed his powers as a freak accident, and tolerated the times when a moment of anger or excitement made the air wave with heat. His grip on his power had gotten better, and he was no longer in danger of setting buildings on fire. He had a few, distant friends, people he talked to in passing. The past month, Daniel had barely seen the water elemental, and though he thought there was a reasonable explanation for it, he couldn't help but have niggling doubts in the back of his head.
At the moment, Daniel lay on the floor of his room, trying to listen in on the conversation. He had, of course, been shunted upstairs when the doorbell rang. He was used to it, and had his own ways of knowing what was going on. He couldn't quite hear every word of the conversation, but it seemed to be a very serious conversation, and he was sure it was his abilities that were being discussed. Hadn't Kimo said he was going to stop the story?
Listening intently as he was, he almost jumped out of his skin when the doorbell rang. For a moment he couldn't think who it was, since Kimo hadn't been around for some time. Then the memory clicked into place and he scrabbled up and charged down the stairs to answer the door. Skidding to a halt in front of the door, he yanked it open to greet the wailua kai.

Kimo shifted his crutches and held out a hand to greet Daniel, a bright smile forced onto his face. Kimo's eyes quickly scanned the room behind Daniel as he spoke.
"Good morning, m'friend! I couldn't seem to get any calls through these past few weeks. Boy, do I have some horror stories for you...It has been a mess this month!" Kimo was fond of telling stories, and often did so. Usually they were something he found amusing, "But first, is there anything interesting happening with you?"
Like...blowing something else up in public? How had they found out? He really didn't feel like fighting with these people right now.

Daniel's eyes flickered down to Kimo's crutches. Well, that explains where he's been anyway, he thought. He skimmed over the extended hand and turned to look over his shoulder.
"They're in the lounge." was all he could say. He suspected Kimo knew who the stranger was and what he wanted, but if Kimo wanted to share the information, he already would have. He grinned slightly at Kimo's mention of stories, knowing how fond the wailua kai was of telling them, but it quickly dissolved into a frown.
"I swear I didn't do anything! Well, unless you count that time I set fire to the tree, but I put that out and no-one saw." What was it that Kimo knew? He shifted in frustration. Behind him, his father poked his head around the door and seeing Kimo, only held a finger up to his lips before retreating back into the room.

Kimo had tried to keep a friendly atmosphere up, but either Daniel was too self-conscious or had come to know him too well for him to get away with it. Sighing, he put a hand on Daniel's shoulder, 'It's ok, m'friend. I'll make sure they don't take you. I'm sorry I haven't been around to protect you better.." he shook his head, "I told you, I have some absolute horror stories," his eyes shifted to the door that his father had peeked out of for a second. These were exactly the sheep-type of parents that would let their son go too. Unconsciously, his voice lowered, "And not all about me." He mused quietly at the closed door, wondering how to handle this situation. He decided on sticking around and waiting until the meeting was over. He'd catch them before they left.
Shaking himself, Kimo focused back on Daniel and then pulled his hand out. The porch, near that vehicle, would be the easiest way to make sure no one left without Kimo's permission, "You put a tree on fire, huh? No one saw? Whoa, does that mean my wailua figured out how to take back the fire? Or did you have a hose handy?" he was all ears to hear about Daniel's latest exploits. Yeah, he liked telling stories more, but he also rather enjoyed listening to them and always tried to encourage an open communication with Daniel. He tried to sound upbeat and positive, a skill he had sort-of acquired from his days of teaching beginning surfers.

"Take me? What?" Daniel blinked. He knew the car was different somehow, but he didn't know who had been in it. Although he followed the news of superhero fights and the like, things like emerging powers and relocation programmes were new to him. Shaking his head a little at Kimo's stories, he stepped out onto the porch and pulled the door to slightly to avoid being yelled at by his parents.
"I was practicing, like you told me, but it actually worked this time." Daniel grinned at the memory. "The branch of the tree near me caught fire. I had to break it off and it went out on the ground." What was even better was, the touch of the fire hadn't hurt. In fact, it had felt good, somehow. Not sure where the train of thought was going, Daniel abruptly abandoned it. "So where have you been?" he asked, with a grin at the wailua kai.

Kimo decided not to answer Daniel's surprised exclamation as they walked out to the porch. He sat and leaned with interest as Daniel told his story, his face entirely approving, "Sweet!" Although an adult, Kimo spent enough time around the teenagers to talk their lingo, "You weren't afraid of pulling that branch off, then?" Kimo had never showed any fear of the fire, but then, his element was water. He didn't see a reason to fear. He wondered fleetingly if this child would become a pyro or if he'd have a respect for it.
As much as Kimo liked to keep the conversation on his boy, his eyes had immediately lit up at Daniel's question. He gave in now, he had no problem with holding two conversations at once and his experience told him kids didn't usually mind it either, "OOooh, Danny boy... First, I had those monster relatives I told you about coming in. You know, the ones that were only supposed to stay a couple of days? I just saw them off this morning," he looked down, trying to look upset, but his mouth twitched into a smile, and he failed miserably at trying to sound burdened and depressed, instead sounding rather comical, "Oooh, Daniel, did I ever need you! My nieces tried to kill me! First they knock me down stairs, then they light my kitchen afire, and then they try beating me to death with falling suitcases! My poor kitchen..." And he gave up, chuckling as he continued, "Those poor girls. You should have seen their faces when I rushed in and blew the facet up to take it out...and I thought they were going to die then and there when the water picked itself up and left the kitchen and didn't keep gushing out...When they told their parents..." he chuckled some more, whether choosing not to continue so Daniel could imagine or not able to for being too amused, it was uncertain.
Finally, he said, "If you'd been there, we coulda had that fire billowing around like the sprites in the movies." Daniel hadn't showed that sort of ability yet, but Kimo was constantly affirming that the boy could do all sorts of things.
As he looked up at Daniel, his eye happened to catch the vehicle again, and chuckling aburptly disappeared. They had bigger problems than monster relatives though.

It was as though because Kimo hadn't answered his question that Daniel decided not to push it. He had already lost some of the comfort of some of the other inhabitants of the island because of his power's outburst. Kimo was a good person, who wanted to help him. The last thing that he wanted was to be abandoned by the one person who'd given him a chance. Kimo couldn't promise that things would go back to normal, but stopping the talk that went on about him -most of it, anyway- was good. "Not at all! It was easy." The boy beamed happily. It would have been better if he'd used his powers to put it out, but that seemed like it would be something he could do in the future, not when he was just beginning to be taught.
Daniel was again distracted, this time by the stories of Kimo's family. His teacher's month was much busier than his own. "Wow, they really stayed this long?" From what he'd known, they were only supposed to be staying a few days. But that would explain why he hadn't seen the wailua kai in so long. He'd managed not to blow anything up -which brought back the question as to why the man with the strange car was there. "I wouldn't have been much help. I haven't practiced enough to stop the fires. Not yet, anyway." He looked down at his own hand, but his eyes wandered to Kimo's hurt limb. "Did they do that to you? It must have really hurt." He only hoped that it would heal soon. "I guess they must not have seen the wailua kai in action before!" His mind thought about everything that their parents could possibly have said. They wouldn't have believed them, probably. His own parents had yet to accept his powers completely.
He knew that it was unlikely that he'd actually be able to do that if he tried, but just hearing about making something amazing with fire got him excited. For a moments, he laughed along with Kimo's chuckling before the water spirit stopped. His gaze was directed again at the black car. That would probably have been the reason for Kimo's sudden halt in his chuckles.

Kimo smiled slightly, obviously not as cheerful as usual, "Most people like to believe that this wailau doesn't have any ability out of the ocean. If they'd had known, I would hope that they wouldn't have bothered me so much. Afterall, who should touch us?" Kimo's indoctrination of superiority was always done in a momentary joking way, but he knew the power of repitition, "I'm sure you would have been helpful. You know, your enthusiasm, your talent, it won't be long before you've surpassed your ol' friend here."
Kimo caught Daniel in a hold as he spoke and gave him a good noogie, "You won't forget me, huh? Won't ever leave me out in the cold...or too hot, huh? We've got some work to do, m'friend." he let go, and nodded to the van, "They're not going to make things very fun for us."

Daniel returned the smile with one of his own, soft yet caring. He knew there had been something not right with the odd man in the car. But it had to be much worse than he'd feared for Kimo to be acting so down. "Yeah. One day, I will be even better than you, even though it doesn't even seem possible. Then you'll have to watch out!" He grinned in a more relaxed way than he had before.
"Hey!" He laughed, flailing slightly to try to escape Kimo's grip. He didn't try too hard. What he didn't want was to accidentally bump his friend's injury and make it worse. "No, I'll never forget, no matter what." His gaze wandered to the van again. "Y'know, I could try to make it harder for them..." He trailed off. He didn't even know what he was thinking about doing. Whatever it was, it likely involved 'accidentally' setting the car on fire. But if he did, it might explode. And with it right in front of his house, it wasn't such a good idea. But at least it would distract them for a while.

"Well, I'll certainly help you to reach that point, you're worth it." he pulled back from the grip, secretly satisified that his trainee hadn't changed much in the past month, except maybe to grow in some confidence, and that was a plus.
He frowned slightly at his last sentence though. It wouldn't be a plus if he decided to get cocky, "I think that make it harder on you, actually. It would be a definite then. I'm thinking more along the lines of convincing him that you aren't an Evo." That was perhaps the first time Kimo had referred to Daniel as an Evo instead of the more respected and kinder term of wailua.
Verbalizing the sentence though seemed to spur him into action, "Hey, Daniel, you know some things about science and fire, don't you? Have you studied it at all?" Kimo mentally added that thought to his list. He didn't want to do school with the kid, but understanding of the element would sure help. "Or blowing things up, firecrackers? All boys have some," he hoped so, anyway, "You got any around? I bet we can rig something up to prove the counter-rumor that's been going around about you. You know, the one about you being a deliquent and just throwing firecrackers and burning branches around?"
Kimo grinned and winked, he liked to try to play that off as a big inside joke. He'd never told Daniel that he had been the one to start that rumor, and it had sufficiently quieted most of the town, or at least he had thought it had before today. But now it was time to put the rumor into "fact" and get rid of the Evo talk entirely. He only hoped that Daniel could deliver the hoped for items. Kimo had started to carry a lighter with him since he'd known Daniel, but that was all he had in his pocket.

Daniel again lost his smile at his mentor's displeasure. Maybe, he thought, that wouldn't be the best of ideas, considering the circumstances. He'd have to think things through before saying them aloud. "That won't be easy. Whoever this guy is, he really asks a lot of questions. I think he knows most of the answers, though, so I have no ida why he's asking." Of course, he wasn't actually supposed to know what was going on downstairs. But he couldn't help himself from at least trying to listen to them.
"Hmm?" He blinked a few times at first, not understanding. "We learned a little about it in science, though what we learned is probably useless." His smile returned as the boy began thinking of different ways to cause a minor explosion from what he's learned. "Of course! I have a bunch of leftovers from a holiday last year, and I know some really big ones are left!" His parents had barely allowed him to use the larger firecrackers then, so what would they think now? Considering what he was probably going to use them for, they would probably shout at him. He didn't particularly like the rumor that had been going around, but it had been better than people believing that he was an Evo. Although he had no idea what Kimo was planning, he'd merely go along with it for now. If it made the strange man with the scary car leave, then it couldn't be that bad.

"He's a government employee. They want to take you away from home and do who-knows-what with you. They'll pout some pretty story to your parents, and take you away and you'll not come back." Kimo finally gave into the gloom he was feeling, and spoke in all seriousness. He and Daniel had no reason to like these people.
"Let's go get them. You want to blow the car up? We'll blow it up. The old-fashioned way." He winked then, "He'll get out of herre real quick, and I think nothing will be said about it. They don't need people knowing what they do."

"No! They can't make me!" Daniel spoke angrily, though still not at a yell. They couldn't make him leave his home if he didn't want to. The man didn't have the right. Even if he was a part of the government. "I don't care who he is. I not gonna leave, and he's not going to make me." Unlike Kimo, he wasn't gloomy at all. He was throughly ticked. They hadn't even done anything yet and he was already feeling like setting something on fire.
"Right! We'll give him a reason not to come back." He nodded. Blowing up a car would be fun -even if he didn't use his fire. "It's just too bad we don't have a camera to snap a picture of him running off." Of course, pictures would only serve to cause more problems in the future. But in the short run, it'd be funnier to have an image so he could remember.

Kimo was thoroughly pleased with the reaction he pulled out of Daniel, "That's exactly it! They have no right, and we need to get rid of 'em. Where's the firecrackers, m'boy, I'll help set up."
And his humor came back, letting out an appreciative laugh at the thought of the reaction of this government geek, "Well, I'll keep in mind to have a camera with me next time I come for a visit, m'friend."
