About the Library

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—I took the one less traveled by.
—Robert Frost, 1916

The Library is the gateway out into the Black District. It is the repository not only of hundreds of thousands of books, parchments, scrolls, and electronic records from ages past and present, it also is home to the works of art salvaged from the war-torn world outside the city walls. A few of the pieces that have been saved and housed in the Library's Galleries are a painting of St. Sebastian, a marble statue of a man bent over in thought, a few tapestries depicting hunting scenes, an altar of some sort with a depiction of a man nailed to a cross, and a triptych that is missing a few feet at its topmost right hand corner, but otherwise depicts three fantastical worlds of pastel colours and fantastical beasts.

Any student of the White District is allowed to borrow books from the Library, and citizens who have graduated the school may still come to copy information, study, investigate and otherwise pass time in the hallowed halls.

Borrowing Books

A thing of beauty is a joy for ever.
—John Keats, 1818

Uh...oh! Hello! ...I...*ahem*
My name is Requiem! I am the Librarian of the Library of Empyrean City! Sorry for being...a little flustered, you just caught me off-guard...is all...
So, you'd like to borrow a book?

Basically, you can look at any of the electronic equipment during your time in the Library. This includes all CDs, Tapes, DVDs, mp3s, records, and VHS that can be viewed on the Media Player. It also extends to the Computron. With the latter, please be advised that it can only be used for 1 hour at a time before the Essence begins to cause it to malfunction. Please make sure to set the timer when you sit down to preserve this rare piece of hardware.

Any other references, such as books, scrolls, parchments and maps may be borrowed from the Library for an unlimited amount of time as we have made many copies of these references. Just be aware that you may only borrow Three references at a time, and you may not borrow any new references until the old ones are returned.

So, how do you borrow them?

When you've made your selection, please bring them to either Myself, or my Librarian's Assistants that work within the Library. They will scan the book and check them out to you. When you wish to return them, the process is the same, and the books will be checked back in.

Current Librarian's Assistant: Grave.

Extra Credit

We are like dwarfs on the shoulders of giants, so that we can see more than they.
—Bernard of Chartres, 12th century

In any given Class lesson, a student is likely to learn 1 to 3 skills that they may add to their repertoire. This is designed to give the students a taste of the various options open to them so that they may then make a decision about which Careers and Positions they would like to pursue at later Stages.

However, a measly three skills in a subject is the bare tip of the iceberg if one is interested in pursuing a subject further! And so, Extra Credit is born.

Basically, every time you borrow a reference from the Library (See the Class References Lists) you may then take a maximum of Three new skills from that Professor's Class Lesson (as found in the Professor's Thread) to add to your repertoire.

Please keep in mind that only references properly checked out and recorded in your Empyrean's Journal along with skills selected will count towards your repertoire.

While there is no restriction about which skills are learned, there are some that should be self explanatory in their order of learning. The Chakras, for instance are best learned as a set, beginning at the bottom-most chakra and working your way to the top, which would require three different Check Outs to complete the learning of. But as a general rule, you must know at least 1 skill from Lesson One before you can begin to tackle a more advanced concept from Lesson Two. Likewise, one must have learned a skill from Lesson Two before moving on to the material from Lesson Three.

If you have any further questions about the material in any of the Lessons, you can look up the information on Wikipedia, as it is all based in real world truth, or you can ask about its Empyrean implications in the Teacher's Lounge.

Stage Three Examination

Politics is the art of the possible.
—Otto von Bismarck, 1867

When an Empyrean has done good service to the City, and has reached the limit of his or her possible growth or usefulness, this path can be taken. For those who have developed a Broken or Cursed Status, this is often the safer way to go, rather than be consumed by the Essence and become a Monster that will need to be hunted and subdued. The final step for the Empyrean at the end of their path, is to become one with Metatrons, offering up knowledge and memory to the great omniscience that is their patron - be that Nova, Fortuna, Mephistopheles or Rasputin. From here the essence and body are reabsorbed, the individual ceases to exist, and their soul goes on as part of the great power that governs and protects the City of Empyrean.

Your Username:

~Please have your Empyrean answer the following questions~
1. Have you fully learned the skill sets of at least three Courses? Which Subjects?
2. Have you learned at all of the Magics of the Stage Three List? Which style of Magic?
3. Have you completed at least Three Quests for your chosen Position?
4. Have you posted at least 3 times in the Position thread designated for your colleagues?
5. Have you bought/crafted/obtained four of the following since your last Transcendence: technoequip, item, alchemical potion, medicinal remedy, Caster Gun/Caster shells? Which?
6. Have you performed work in one of the Shops, paid or unpaid in assistance of another Empyrean (including Tutoring)?
7. Have you attended at least 3 Special Events since your last Transcendence? Which?
8. Have you defended the city in the form of subduing unrest in the younger Empyreans, fighting a monster that has broken into the City or bolstered the City's walls or magical defenses? Which actions have you taken?
9. How many Gate passes have you purchased? Have you been through each Gate at least once?
10. Have you collected a Husk? If so, did you raise the Husk yourself, or put it up for adoption?
