I posted this on Site Feedback a few days ago to a surprisingly negative response, and I think people here would be interested:

Apparently the House just passed this piece of s**t bill 410-15. The bill would prohibit people from using sites such as MySpace or Gaia at schools, libraries, or other federally funded locations. (By the way, the reality, of course, is that the bill has a misleading title and actually has nothing to do with "predators")

Gaia and other affected sites should strongly and publicly oppose this bill.

The bill affects the sites meeting the following definition:

Quote:
In determining the definition of a social networking website, the Commission shall take into consideration the extent to which a website-

(i) is offered by a commercial entity;
(ii) permits registered users to create an on-line profile that includes detailed personal information;
(iii) permits registered users to create an on-line journal and share such a journal with other users;
(iv) elicits highly-personalized information from users; and
(v) enables communication among users.

Ah, yes. Yet another example of Congress wanking off about how great and wonderful it is, and stupid Americans greedily lapping up its fetted j**z like the pack of complacent lap-dogs they are. Too bad Congress can't be bothered to do anything which actually helps society.

I mean, seriously, 'Deleting Online Predators Act'? Who the ******** sat around and thought up that moniker? For starters, most predators aren't online--some 70% of rapists are people the victim knows already in real life--fathers, brothers, friends, husbands, etc. As for kids, who's most likely to rape them? Their fathers and stepfathers.

Congress would prevent more children from being raped each year if it abolished fatherhood than through all of these ill-conceived internet predator protection acts combined.

Or do they seriously think that online predators can sense where a kid (by which we mean 'teen') is sitting when they log on? You know, if you log onto Gaia while at the library, the predators will know this and crawl out of their little predator hidey-holes and attack you, but if you log on while at home, you'll be just fine?

This is legislation based on content, and frankly, (outside of a few things like child pornography which the government has decided it has a vested interest in eliminating altogether,) that's censorship. So long as we still have the first ******** amendment of the Constitution, the government does not have the right to censor content.

This is bullshit, and everyone in Congress ought to be ******** ashamed to waste hard-earned tax-payer dollars on crap like it. <******** hell.

I thnk the Gov't has once again, perfectly displayed why the rest of the world thinks were a bunch of dumb, ignorant sons of bitches, that need a boot in the a**.

Just another thinly veiled attempt to throw around their weight, and show the people what they do with our hard earned tax dollars. Grar. >.>

It's things like this that make it somewhat easier to see myself packin' my s**t, and headin' to Japan.

Oh well, kids today are not as stupid as our Gov't makes them out to be. They'll find a way around it, and get to these sites once again. The people will see how much WORSE this will effect our society as a whole, and they'll get out in the streets, and protest, and riot, until the Gov't gets off it's a**, and improves this country.

The way I see it, you've gotta hit the bottom, before you can get back to the top.

I could add more to this, but I guess everything's been said. Goverment's being an a**, what with the whole DOPA and "Net-Neutrality" Act, not to mention other "Security Measures". The only security I see being implemented is towards the gov't, seeing as a dumb country means a safe goverment. They're purposely trying to dumb down the populace.

You can come with us. ^_^ (Although personally, I'm more inclined towards Canada, it being a shorter trip and the folks there speaking more English and all. Besides you can't show genitals in Japanese porn, even drawn porn, and that would totally put a crimp in my style.

I actually kind of doubt that. When I was in highschool (way back in the day, I know) we had blockers on the computers which prevented us from accessing our email and stuff. Now, some of use (not me) figured out how to circumvent the software, but doing so generally crashed the computers as often as it let us check our email. And even when we were successful, the teachers would figure it out and have the system re-configured within an hour or so.

And this was at a highschool with admissions requirements and were a decent percentage of the graduates went on to Ivy or equivalent colleges. You take your average 12 or 13 yr old public school student or someoen just hanging out at the library, and I seriously doubt they'd be able to hack the system.

As for teh overal effect on society, society isn't going to give a s**t. 'Oh no,' they'll say, 'so kids can't play on Gaia at school. Kids should be doing schoolwork at school! Go do your work and stop bitching.'

We've got a president who lied about his motivations for war, more American's dead in Iraq and Afghanistan than in the WTC attack, and American's still haven't gotten off their asses. I don't think banning Gaia from the library is really going to motivate them.

Americans just don't care, and all the ones who do are leaving.

I don't think our government is smart enough or 'with it' enough to try something like that. I think it's more that we've got about... Gods I have no ******** clue how many people are in gov't. Think state congresses, national Congress, judges, governors, the president, etc.etc. ******** lot of people, and they're all trying to look out for themselves and their own interests (the judges not as much, but some of them face elections, and they're dealing here with technology they basically don't use and don't understand (although a few of the younger ones have started poking at the internet,) and a demographic which doesn't vote and an extremely vocal demographic which does vote, so they're just fine screwing over the non-voting demographic to look good with the voting demographic... Just my take on things...

Greed and corruption and nepotism will always win out over grand schemes. Schemes take brains.

And adding to all that is the fact that a gov't official has more than a 90% chance of being re-elected, no trouble. Once they're up there, it's always about the "Me, myself and I". True, schemes take brains, but hell, there have to be a few smart guys calling some of the shots upstairs, no? Every workplace has at least one, and the Gov't is no exception.

QFT X a bajillion

It's just another ploy to make people FEEL safe, while taking away their freedoms. In other words, it's like putting up a "no sharks" sign in shark-infested waters and then inviting people to come in and swim.

The problem with schemes is that they generally require everyone to have brains, not just the schemer.

And then they'd blame any bites on the sharks...

Unless, like I've seen so many times at work/college/gatherings, people are counting on the fact that someone's brainless. For example, there are people so dumb, that their campaigns are founded by the very criminal element that works under their noses. It's a bit like "well, he's stupid, so I want him in charge".

It's true that schemes need brains, but not everyone has to have them, just a few, the ones "pulling the strings". Manipulation, misinformation and omittance of facts can pretty much lead sheep whereever you want them to go. You have a point, though, this might all just be a huge case of Terminal Stupid.

Such schemes tend to be short-lived, though, because of the Terminal Stupid. Case in point: Bush administration. These guys couldn't keep a ******** secret wire-tap program secret...

I am a strong believer in human incompetence.

Of course, in some cases you are exactly right. Nazi Germany (please excuse the Godwin), being a particular case in point. I could claim that the scheme didn't work out in the end and was ultimately a failure, but that's rather cold comfort to the 50 mill who died in that war.
