I got this post from another guild, so I'm posting it here as well as my reply to it. First off. For those that dont know what global warming is. Humankind has, by way of population. deforestation, and the burning of fossil fuels has increased the amount of CO2 (carbon Dioxide) in the atmosphere, carbon dioxide is one of the green house gasses that helps to trap heat from the sun in the atmosphere. because of increased CO2 levels more and more heat is being trapped, causing the avarage temperature of the planet to rise. Yesterday, the Science channel brodcasted a show "Global Warming. What you need to know" This show explained what global warming is. and what it will do. One of the main problems. is melting polar ice caps. the last substantial size chunk to break off from Antartica was the size of Rhode Island (No, im not getting that from "The Day After Tommarow." its real.) The melting of the ice caps increases sea levels. Scientists predict that in the next decade enough ice will have melted to cause the country of Bangladesh, the citys of New Orleans, New York, and other cities all over the world, and other islands around the globel to be under water. Hurricanes have been becoming increasingly more powerful, and they will keep getting this way. Temperatures around the world will rise. Animals will be effected greatly. for example the polar bears hunt during spring and summer, so they have enough food to hibernate fall and winter. but because of rising temperatures. the ice melts faster. so the hunting time is shrinking. with less hunting time. means bears loose body fat. therefore not producing enough milk for their young. with they cant produce enough milk. no more young. no more polar bears. Deforestation- Humans have been destroying rainforests. and other forests. because trees and other plants breath CO2 and release oxygen, the carbon immisions and the rate of the loss of trees has caused the plants to fall behind, there to much CO2 and to few plants. Cars- The USA is one of the most fossil fuel dependant countries in the world. and what are auto makers doing to help? almost noting. yes you may say that they are getting smart by making Hybrids and whatnot, and im not saying those arnt good ideas, but many other countries, including some third world countries, are building cleaner cars. Cars that dont release as much CO2. Most American Automakers DO NOT produce cars that are cleaner. they just make what they always have made. here is a 1996 graph of the top 20 CO2 emitting countries here is a per person carbon emission graph The is a film out "An Inconvient Truth." that explains global warming more in depth. Everyone should see it. Global Warming is reality. and it will happen. soon. Thank you for reading. consider the facts. and post your thoughts, comments, etc. And now my reply: YESSSSSSSSSSSS A SMART AND AWARE PERSON!!!!! I was going to be posting something very very similar in all of my guilds so I'm really glad I found that someone has done the very thing I wanted to teach people.
There are very simple steps to lower the pollution thus slowing the global warming and hopefully preventing it completely.
- Use compact flourescent light bulbs instead of the cheap ones. It has a MUCH longer life span so not only are you saving energy, you're saving trash by throwing away so many light bulbs. Some of these compact flourescent light bulbs last up to 9 years!!!! Yes they are a bit more pricey but if you think about it you're really saving much more than you're spending.
- Unplug appliances you aren't using. Even if you've turned something off it is still sucking the energy. If you unplug it then you're saving on your electricity bill as well as reducing more pollution!
- When going to the dry cleaners, bring your on bag for your clothes instead of getting the throw-away bags they give you. Less garbage- as simple as that.
and..
- For those of you looking for a new car or have enough money to buy a new one, choose a hybrid or at least a car that has at least 30 mph. This benefits you twice over since you're saving SO MUCH MORE money on the rising petrol prices as well as reducing air pollution.
It's ridiculous that we haven't done something already! I think it's a combination of a few things:
-people don't really understand what global warming is -people feel that it's just a phase the planet is in like the ice age -the oil business is so greedy with their money that they protest and higher cheap scientists to say it's nothing important -it won't effect us in our life time anyway
All of it is COMPLETE BS! The global warming has already started with the hurricanes. Sure it may have been known as hurricane season, but come on. These are becoming even more powerful, and I'm sure I'm not the only one who noticed the NATION WIDE HEAT WARNING. That's not normal people.. If the Earth's temperature keeps rising, then the crops won't get enough water, meaning starvation and hyperventilation seeing that there won't be enough water for us either. With this, the population of mosquitos with fatal viruses and diseases will grow and spread all over the world killing MILLIONS of people as well as the decreasing water and food supply killing us off as well. Whole cities and islands that we all know will drown, and this could happen in a matter of decades. Scary s**t people.
We need to act NOW!! And yes, I fully and completely recommend the movie "An Inconvient Truth." This is to be taken seriously- grow up and look around! It's closer than you may think.

Your first graph isn't showing up (but I have a pretty good guess as to what it says; after all the US is #1 in carbon emissions, followed by China I think (although China is expected to pass us up at some point)).
According to some of my classes, the overall temperature of the earth is no higher when compared with past cycles. This is based on measurements taken from a glacier (don't recall the name off the top of my head). However, the temperature is increasing at a faster rate than normal, which is a cause for concern. The fact that the earth's temperature goes in cycles is not BS, but the fact that it is increasing more quickly than ever does indicate the probabilty of global warming.
I am not entirely sure how hot temperatures mean less rain for crops, or less rain period. The rainforest has a fairly high constant temperature, after all. If you mean the creation of more deserts, a lot of that comes from deforestation and growing crops like soybeans (which are crap for the soil), as well as erosion.
Hyperventiliation means you are breathing too quickly or taking in too much oxygen. This has nothing to do with global warming; I think you mean dehydration. And as far as I know, there has not been an increase or decrease in the amount of water on the planet. We need to conserve water if the population continues increasing, but I also don't consider that related to global warming for the most part.
I won't argue that low lying areas are at risk; also hurricanes have the potential to become worse (since they occur in areas of warm water). If water levels rise there is definitely a risk for some places like New Orleans.
Your statement about mosquitos contradicts what you said about less water. If there is less water, there would be fewer mosquitoes because they depend on water in the larval stage. Like I said before, I don't agree with the less water.
I do agree that warmer temperatures are preferred by mosquitoes, however, global warming is not the only culprit if you are talking about disease. The species that commonly carries malaria (pretty sure it is Ades aegypti) is sure to spread with warmer temperatures since they like the tropics. This could increase the number of malaria cases. However, some diseases become a problem because the disease itself travels, not the mosquitoes. West nile virus is a concern in California in particular, because it traveled here and it just so happened that a few of our native species have an extremely high transfer rate for the virus. So I agree that some diseases could become more of a problem; yet some increases in disease (even mosquito related) have nothing to do with global warming.
I am not disagreeing with global warming, I believe it will become a problem in the near future; I am simply pointing out flaws in your arguements.
Part of the problem is related to money. Hybrid cars are often expensive (my boss wanted to buy a hybrid vehicle, and it turned out to be about $10,000 more than a similar non hybrid). Sure, she would save gas money...eventually. In the US, people are too attached to cars and public transportation in some places is not good enough to justify not driving. And its not only the US. In the 60s, China had a policy telling all their citizens to cut down their local forests to fuel the coal industry. Economy is always before environment there, unfortunately, and if you think the US has some shitty environmental laws (yeah it does), check out China's record.
The tips you posted are a good place to start (and you actually forgot to mention buying energy efficient appliances), but until someone comes up with a widescale solution that is also economically feasible, it won't do much.
If any of that didn't make sense....sorry. Heh, My bosses are working me like crazy lately.

A) I'll be dead before that happens.
B) I'll be raptured.
C) God promised He would never flood the earth ever again by giving us a rainbow. (which we perveted to mean gay! stressed )

While I originally thought I had something constructive to add, I realized that I don't. So, here's what I do know: I'm sick of 107F heat. I'm sick of monsoon-like rainstorms during the winters. I'm sick of completely skipping spring and autumn.

Siren of Saturn A) I'll be dead before that happens. i agree that we need to start doing something about it, however that kind of attitude is one held by rather alot of people who dont feel as though they hold any obligation to do anything, so basically condemning their children to the results of their lethargy at doing anything. If you can galvinise those kinda folk then that'll be a start at least.

Though this post is in the wrong place, I have something really important to add:
Stop building neighborhoods far, far away from the city!
Seriously, these places are a great cause for pollution, because if you live inside the urban sprawl, you can take the bus to move around the town. Yeah, of course, going for some booze usually means staying at a friend's house until morning, but you can usually use the public transportation to move around.
On the other hand, if you live far away from the city, you HAVE TO use the car just to be able to leave your neighborhood, because there ain't no bus. I shoud know, because I live 7 km within a 1000 feet high hilltop, and my Pontiac Sunfire burns about 1 or 2 gallons of gasoline on the way home. And I must go from home to school 5 times a week. The result? My 50 liter gas tank lasts for 2 weeks, if and only if I use it once, to go from home to school and vice-versa.
As you can guess, the gas bills are sky-high. I'm already used to that, because in Mexico, the gas prices are comparable to the ones in the USA shortly after Katrina, but constant and slowly increasing. But please, do yourself a favor, and go get your house within the town, not in the middle of nowhere! I'm sick of seeing so much people fleeing the town looking for "calm and peace", when the only thing they get is a lot of stress from having to drive 40 miles each day!

I was born in Florida, I live in Maine... I love Global warming.
Besides, maybe this is the the planets normal rotation (Ice Ages and such), and it's just naturally getting warmer with all of the crap we're doing just being coincidental?

Partly. I've read something about that, and it also has something to do. Carbon dioxide is still the largest player, but that's because of the sheer amounts that we create, because carbon dioxide itself is a really weak greenhouse gas: most of it returns to the nature, or dissolves into the ocean, becomes carbolic acid, and sinks towards the bottom. Methane is, by far, the most dangerous gas, because it stays there, and traps the infrared radiation from the sun. That's why the UN actually pays you money for just burning your methane and converting it into CO2: because it becomes less harmful.

Global warming is like the butterfly effect. But rather than one broken butterfly making one hurricane, we have a flock.
And the problem is that that flock flys whenever something bad happens.
Anyways, global warming isn't nearly as human based as many would like to think. My opinion on the subject is not only do people exaggerate their own actions in things, but also with the "unplug your appliances, don't drive SUV's, etc" suggestions also comes from the laziness people are in with coming up with the solutions.
A real solution would be a ten million dollar prize for whomever can make a cheap, efficient machine that can split green house gases into safer substances.
Of course, that could ******** us up even worse xD
People are just to desperate to stop change they can't control. Earth goes through this cycle every few thousand years. Life also goes through mass extinction every time, too.
I'm all for affirmative action. I'm not all in for "OMG. Trucks R teh evilz."
