Does anyone believe in the four elements anymore? Earth, Wind, Water Fire? I was just wondering if anyone else did stuff regarding the four elements, or classifies themselves as one of the four. Anyone?

I've been told that my element was Water. I can believe that.
As an end result, I'd much like learning to work with hydrokinetics..assuming that is the proper term for the kinesis of water..
Though, I also have to admit that I also think that pyrokinesis is cool, but I heard that one cannot/should not attempt to learn that if their element is not fire.
But hydrokinesis would still be cool. As any of the kinetic abilities would be cool.
*blinks*..I'm starting to go offtopic. Terribly sorry about that. sweatdrop

The elements are very interesting, allthough truth be told I don't do much work with them. However, I know if I am classified by element, is is Metal and only Metal that works for me. I don't know if everyone thinks that counts, though...

When I do magic it is elemental in nature. I'm not sure I can be classified as any one element.

I believe in the elements. They just seem... I don't know... right? That's not the best way of putting it, but oh well... Yagi Tessil I've been told that my element was Water. Who told you? I'm a little confused as to whether I'm Water or Fire, and I could do with some clarification.

(chuckles) I find it a bit amusing that the original post refers to the elements as if they're a 'belief' rather than an intrinsic aspect of reality. This one knows a great deal about the elements, though the research I've been doing is far from complete. The idea of the four elements originates (or at least as has been recorded in written documents for us to find) in Greek philosophy with tackling the basic question of what the fundamental 'starting stuff' of the universe was.
In early thought, there was only one fundament. Different philosophers attributed different elements as the one from which all else came. It was Empedocles who first proposed the idea that there was not one fundamental material of the universe, but four. In other words, all four are the original creator elements from which all else has come. All things contain in some part each of the four elements and the organization of the universe is based off the interaction of the properties of these four. Aristotle came in later and refined these ideas (reading the complete works of Aristotle is my next project in this research... going to check it out from the library today) and cannonized them enough so that they carried through the middle ages.
My knowledge of the non-Greek trail of the elements is poor right now, but based on other things I've read, it is my understanding that the elements were picked up eventually by various 18th century occultists and incorporated into magical grimoires. By this time, some of the original ideas and such about the elements had been revised or changed. This is evident at least, in the Golden Dawn's interpretations of the elements (which is the one that was transfered to Wicca and hence used by most of the Neopagan/occult community today) have inconsistencies with some of the original Greek ideas.
I'm not sure yet how astrology worked the elements into its mix and I hope to trace that out sometime. Those of you who have said you're under a certain element were probably told so because you're astrological sign corresponds to a particular element. The four Elements and their corresponding Signs are Fire (Aries, Leo and Sagittarius), Earth (Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn), Air (Gemini, Libra and Aquarius) and Water (Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces).
Eeeh... I'd better stop on this topic. Can you tell this is one of my favorites? blaugh

Azana gave me the name of a Gaian user who was said to have the ability to read elements. Plus, the generalized personality traits and descriptions of those of Water tend to fit me rather than those of Earth. Not to mention that cleansing and purifying Crystals seems to work so much better when I purify them with Water than with burying them in the Earth..so..yes..I don't know..I got nothing. sweatdrop

I'm not quite sure what I am (leaning towards air). However, element classification is popular in the east. Their element system is different though. Eastern elements consist of water, fire, metal (sometimes known as iron), gold, and wood.

Hmm... I did not mean that elements were a 'belief', I just meant that some people think that they are just rubbish. And, as for myself, my astrological sign does NOT correspond with my element. I believe my element is fire, and my birth sign is pisces sweatdrop Quote: Azana gave me the name of a Gaian user who was said to have the ability to read elements Hey, Azana or Yagi, could you please give me the name of that user?

LoBo has a meditation process where you sit on the ground with a rock (earth), bowl of water (water), and a candle (fire) around you (air is everywhere, you don't need anything to represent it). Meditate, and the object that you feel most comfortable with should be your element. Knowing which element you are is also helpful for kinetics. You should specialize with the kinesis your element is (aero, hydro, gaia, pyro).
