each era of jazz has a number of huge contributors who made that time noticeable. e.g. Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie influenced bebop; Miles Davis influenced fusion and many other things... etc. who do you guys think are some of the most influential jazz musicians and why?

Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, John McLaughlin, Wayne Shorter, Joe Zawinul, Stanley Clark, Lenny White, Jaco Pastorius are some key artists in the fusion period.

Gerry Mulligan. Without him, no cool jazz... No Miles Davis. And he paved the way for bari sax as a soloist. If not for him, some a bari may have never played jazz... Or bari...

doc.hyphae ] so many artists i haven´t tried! i´ll try a Gery CD when i see one. Well, get Jeru if you have the chance. Or The Birth of Cool, Miles Davis. Gerry composed and played in most of the songs on it. They don't give him enough credit.

My sax teacher gave me this list of the most influential sax players out there. The sheet has -Adolphe Sax (obviously) *American Debut* -Sidney Bechet -Frank Trumbauer *Swing* -Coleman Hawkins -Ben Webster -Lester Young -Johnny Hedges -Benny Carter -Harry Carney -Paul Gonsalves? (I can't read his writing) *Bop* -Charlie Parker -Dexter Gordon -Sonny Stitt -Stan Getz *Cool* -Lee Konitz -Zoot Sims -Gerry Mulligan *Hard Bop* -Sonny Rollins -John Coltrane (into the 'Free' era) -Joe Henderson -Wayne Shorter -Cannonball Adderly -Hank Mobley *Free/Avant Garde* -Ornette Coleman -Rashaan Kirk -Pharoah Sanders *Fusion and Modern* (He doesn't have any sax players highlighted here)
Yeah, sorry for such a long list sweatdrop , but if you're anything like me, you wouldn't have heard half the sax players he named on there. There's definitely over 50, and these are just sax players. Can't forget trumpets, bones, and rhythm!

I was listing off sax players, but as a trumpet player and vocalist, Armstrong was definitely one of the most important jazz musicians out there. Also, I've heard of Chris Potter, but interestingly, he's not on the list?! eek . well, I guess I can't expect my sax teacher to put every sax player on that list
