MTV2 Reality Series Final Fu Airing July 17
by Diana Davila
The much debated Final Fu television series is set to air on MTV2 and MTV starting July 17th. While the entire cast is still unknown, there are several national level point sparring competitors involved. For those unfamiliar with the concept, the show is being hosted by Ernie Reyes Jr. The show is a sports competition/reality series that will pit various martial artists against each other in challenges and in point sparring matches, in an attempt to see which "style" will come out on top.
What I find interesting is the fact that the show is being billed as being able to determine style supremacy, but in my experience in point sparring competition, there is really no way of telling one style from another in point sparring. There are kickers who are not necessarily Tae Kwon Do artists and punchers who are. How will you determine which style is the best, even in the point fighting arena, when all the fighters fight alike?
The point sparring game really boils down to speed, accuracy, timing and the ability to think on your feet. It has little to do with any particular style, certainly not at the higher levels of competition. Any thoughts on this issue?
