By skill, stamina and determination.
But mostly out of the wish to protect the people he loves.

didnt there fight in the forest end in a draw? cause they were both out of chakra and on the ground staring at each other. (if its the wrong fight sry ><)

no, you're right. it's the fight he's talking about, but in the end Naruto did win, since Gaara started to change from that point on.

the reason naruto won was because he had something to protect.
and gaara didnt.

It's this whole theme thing that Kishimoto keeps repeating how "you're stronger when you have an important person/someone to protect." So seeing as gaara fought only for himself, he lost. naruto wanting to protect the village and his friends won. but i have to agree Zirumi, I'm happy Gaara's not suffering anymore.
