Quest Status

12/30: kdfskj o.o So Katherine of Dreamland donated me 75k. No, I'm not kidding. I had a heart attack and my hands are still twitchy. Whether it was for the quest or not, I have no clue. But as we know, 75k + 25k = 100k, which gives me enough for a nonmorphic serum RIGHT NOW in pure gold. Awesome.

Next I'll save for the 500k tauric, but if I don't get it, it won't be the end of the world. I'd be damn happy getting on the island, let alone getting a nonmorphich or tauric thing...

Now let's hope I don't blow this gold on something dumb >.> I AM also trying to save 300k for a labcoat...so let's hope I can resist temptation there....

12/23: Okay, this gets bigger text because it's more important. I've decided that this is how questing will go: I'm gonna set up a sort of "goal ladder" for myself. First, I'll save 100k for nonmorphic- that'll be my first goal. Then I'll try to work my way up to 500k for tauric after that. If I cannot save up enough to pay for either "special" serum and an opportunity comes...I'll just end up going with a standard serum. How's that sound? ALSO- NEW ART by Eulie in the art post ^^

11/21: I've been considering a tauric serum for some time now, debating about whether I want to go for it or not. I've got a new poll up, and I'd like opinions on whether I should try and set my sights on a tauric serum (the only thing that would change would be the serume choice; backstory and character and whatnot would all stay the same). Just think- a tauric mouse. That'd be interesting XD But let me know how you feel!

11/20: HAY GUYZ Nikorasu-kun made me a sprite edit. Simple, but hey, it's something. -luffs on it- Thanks again, Niko!

10/21: Got some art up on the art post. it's not much, but it's a start :3

10/1: Revamped some stuff- I took out the PTSD thing (even though the votes for leaving the PTSD and and taking it out were even), added an 'inventory' post, added a shorter bio for those who don't want to weed through the extended one, changed the poll and added an art post (though it's rather empty right now). Let me know what you all think, alright?

9/22: If you hadn't noticed, I've done some cleaning up and revamping. After the poll finishes it's run, I'm going to update the information with stuff I'll work on this weekend and set up a new poll. Also, if I work hard enough. I should have some arts too~

PT ii: Yeah, the update was in fact the form I used for the contest awhile back, so it's a little different but the same. Also, Obst's name was switch to Noah-- more realistic. :3nod Well, in the background, it still says Obst in a few other places so BEAR WITH ME AS I CHANGE STUFF OVER. Thanks ^^

7/30: Update some stuff on PTSD, OCD and added some mouse stuff. Still working on some stuff, but it's becoming more complete and presentable. 3nodding

7/17: This should technically be an update for 7/16, but I forgot to post it so...you get it today. I cleaned up a few things and messed with some stuff. Like, I defined my quest animal as a common house mouse (more specifically, an albino fancy mouse, the domestic version of the house mouse but they're pretty much the same anyways...the little white mice used in lab tests) instead of being on the fence about it. I figured since someone has a Norway/Brown rat, saying 'fancy rat' would be too close so I went with mouse. Plus, rats are thought of as being sleezy, cheats or backstabbers (as in 'you rat!'), which didn't match well with Obst's personality. Mice, on the other hand, are traditionally thought of being meek, timid, quiet and shy...a better match. Also, I'm sort of debating now on certain elements of Obst's background/personality...the aren't major so I almost wonder if I should omit them and have them revealed on the island (if I get there) via RP as a little 'secret' sort of thing or just write them down. I'm a bit idiosyncratic about having everything down. ^^;; Taking an inventory of my items I could pawn too. Once I figure out how much gold is required for the other quest, I'll post my residual funds. ALSO. Feedback is greatly appreciated and would help me to better improve things~

7/14: If you haven't guessed, this happens to be my quest thread that I was finally prodded into making. I kinda wish I had made it earlier but procrastination got the best of me -has been meaning to set this up since the quester's guild went up- Anyways, this is my concept for the island that's been floating around and has been reworked more than once. I FINALLY narrowed it down from three ideas to two-ish. I have one that I really am keen to and will more than likely end up going with, and it was one I entered in a contest for the shop a long time ago (of course back then I rushed to just get it up for the deadline and as a result is was greatly flawed and didn't win but who cares?). Then I have just a few others kinda fighting. One is fairly similar to my primary idea in animal choice but different everywhere else (and not so fleshed-out). Maybe I'll make a small post listing old and auxillary ideas sometime. Might be fun.

But despite having such long-standing ideas, I'm still working to improve backstory and reword things better. So I can put up the profile, but the backstory will kinda suck while I screw around with it. BE PATIENT. ish.

And as for the company mentioned is his backstory, Sol-Labs is short for SOLARUS-Laboratories, a company I made a long time for an old RP (and it's sort of an ongoing thing in TKW, which is short for 'The Known World, which is just geek speak for my made up world...place. I'll stop now). In this version, it's s toned down research facility dealing with medicine and technology....like a possible rival to feral labs or something. I can't begin to explain what the one from my RP-verse is like XD But it's not important. yay for integration of old ideas!

Moving on...As of now, I have no funds for the quest. Yes, I have gold on hand. yes, I have items I could pawn BUT all the gold I have right now is sort of dedicated to another quest that has seniority. I think i have enough for that one, but I don't want to put down any funds for this one until the dust settles, you dig? So it's like starting from scratch. Won't THIS be fun XD;;;

So as of now, the status is sort of in limbo. I can't beg everyone for gold and items (though that would be nice), and I don't have the means of getting gold just yet (no clue of what items can be pawned, severe lack of art skills, and no one ever comissions writers anymore) so i'm kinda screwed until I can figure things out.

BUT I WILL TRY!

Anyways, I figured that since I lack gold so badly, I'll just quest for a standard serum. I was first going to quest for a white-tailed deeer tauric serum but...tauric serums cost 500k. Which I don't have. So...yeah. Standard serum it is. Also, I narrowed it down to the common house mouse/fancy mouse, as those are the type most commonly used in lab testing (plus, someone has a Norway rat, aka a brown rat, which is the type of rat used in testing and fancy rat is too close to be used. Ergo I go with mouse. That, and Obst is more mousey than rat-y anyways).

Anyways, without further ado, the rest of the crap!
[And I'll try to draw some crappy referance art of the character soon]

Minkey55-
Okay, so it wasn't a real gold/item donation, but I feel like I should give minkey55 some thanks for making me a banner. ^^ It saved me a lot of time and effort that would be wasted on me trying to make a crappy banner. XD Thanks again~

ALSO. I thought I should make a sort of 'wishlist' for items to dress my mule up. As always, donations/gifts/offers are loved~

Character Name: Noah Volgan
Age: 26

Character Appearance (Human):
Noah is fairly short in stature, standing only 5'6, though he's long-waisted, so he seems a bit taller then he normally would be. He's also very thin; weighing roughly 142lbs (the average small-boned individual for this height bracket weighs about 146 at least). His figure is very svelte and lithe, making him physically weak and slightly frail. He has no real pronounced muscles to speak of, and not much body fat either. Of course, it's not like he's just skin and bones either. Just a little thin.

He has blond hair kept in a feathered sort of 'do that falls just short of his shoulders. He also has light blue eyes and a fair complexion. His face is fairly stark with a slight dappling of freckles across the bridge of his nose and cheekbones, and he lacks any piercings as needles other than those used for shots tend to scare the crap out of him. He also isn't one to smile too much, due to the fact he wears braces. He is terribly self conscious of his braces, not only for the typical reason of apprehension, but also because of the fact he is an adult wearing braces, and that braces are typically thought of to be a 'children's' thing.

He dresses as any respectable lab technician would. He wears his typical-issue labcoat, under that a black turtleneck sweater, black pants (that on closer inspection are surprisingly velvety), and a pair of basic hiking boot-like shoes. He also has the standard-issue Sol-Labs nametag pinned to his jacket, but that's a given. However, when not in formal lab attire, he has a small jacket he wears in place of the labcoat. It's nothing fancy, just a small, white cotton button-up shirt with the Sol-Labs logo over the heart (his nametag is pinned on the side opposit the logo on the chest). Since his informal jacket is short-sleeved, he wears underneath it a black, short-sleeved shirt, or in most cases, a tanktop.

Noah also limps on his left side, due to a hip injury he sustained as a young child. Even though the injury healed fairly well, it left him with a slight limp that becomes more pronounced and exaggerated when it rains. He has endured quite a bit of teasing from his coworkers about this, but this seems to be one of the things that he isn't quite as as self-conscious about.

Character Personality:
Noah is a fairly bright man, and has a deep love for music, preferring the soft melodic tones of classical composers and jazz as opposed to the loud raucous music of today. Rap in particular gives him a headache.

Noah is a highly skittish and nervous individual, especially around new people and women. He scares easily, and has the tendency to get panicked in certain situations, though not so much as to pass out (not usually, anyways). He can be very shaky at times and has a lot of nervous mannerisms, such as fidgeting around with his hands (most conspicuously is the way he scratches at the back of his left hand and chewing at his nails and cuticles), shifting around a lot uneasily, and jiggling his foot.

Most noticeable of his personality quirks, however, is his minor OCD. It's standard knowledge that a person suffering from acute anxiety may think the same things over and over-- an obsession. They may also perform certain behaviors to cope with this, known as compulsions. A person, such as Noah, that experiences anxiety-based disorders may have both symptoms, dually known as Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. When we think of OCD, most people think of someone washing their hands a certain amount of times, or doing certain things at certain times for day every day. Or maybe it might include even things that seem to us as trivial as not stepping on any cracks when they go out walking. But everyone has their own obsession and compulsions...it's only when these begin to get out of hand and interfere with what a person wants and needs to do in everyday life that it becomes a problem classified as OCD. Noah follows more the route of a neat freak than a clean freak though. Like, he doesn't wash his hands seven times every four hours or anything, but rather...he's really a**l about organization. Everything of his has to be in a specific order or he tends to tweak out. Like, if his stuff gets knocked about or disorganized, his hands will begin to tremble or twitch. He'll get really uneasy and twitchy and just has to reorganize EVERYTHING. Noah also has the habit of checking and rechecking his work excessively. He'll erase and rewrite an answer or figure multiple times until it 'seems right'-- even if it's the SAME FIGURE each time-- so much that he misses deadlines at times and tends to fall behind in his paperwork. Sometimes Obsessions and Compulsions serve as a diversion from a person's real fears and serve as an 'back door' to coping with anxiety. Or, in Noah's case, it provides him with the evidence he's doing something 'right' or 'halfway decent' for once, even if it's something as trivial as having everything in his room meticulously organized or making sure that his figures on a report are written beautifully and accurately figured (after all, he should know...he checked the answer a good 20 times). Studies have also shown that OCD can run in families, so there can possibly be a genetic basis for Noah's minor OCD as his mother had the same disorder. He also falls into the sort of rut most OCD sufferers do-- they realize their behavior is irrational, pointless, and in his case thinks it's disgraceful, but yet he is unable to control or eradicate it.

Another quirk (surprisingly not related to the OCD) is his food-eating habits. Like, he can't eat if his food is 'touching', or for a better term, mixed. Like, if his peas get into his potatoes, he won't eat them, he'll eat around them. They have to be organized and separate (unless, like stir-fry, it is supposed to be mixed). He also takes one bite of everything at a time. Like, a bite of peas, then a bit of 'taters, etc, until he gets back to peas. And the amounts have to be equal. It sucks running out, because then you lose the whole pattern. Ah, idiosyncrasies.

Noah also has a hard time trusting new people, and is very reserved and sort of skiddish around them at first. He likes to see how they act and assess them before he initiates much conversation or spends any time with them alone (he tends to feel safer in mixed-gender groups, or groups of all females. All male groups puts him on edge, for some reason). He tends to be a little harsh and paranoid in his judgment at times too, but he does this as a way of self-preservation. Oftentimes this occurs without him even really paying attention to it; it's become instinct for him.

Noah was abused by both his mother and father, emotionally and physically (though not at the same time, thankfully for him). This severely diminished his self-esteem and left him with heavy feelings of guilt (he was made to think he was useless and a 'bad boy' quite frequently, being the scapegoat for things). This can be seen as most probably the root of his self-berating and poor self-image, along with his hesitant and timid behavior. He has become passive, thinking that if he does what he's told he can avoid bringing anger upon him and avoid unpleasant emotions (ie, he's become a doormat to avoid strife). He's also developed a social aversion-- if he is highly selective with who he befriends, and is careful with whoever's company he keeps, he can minimize the chance of unpleasentries.

Aside from that, he's fairly warm and very nice and laid-back....when he's around someone he's comfortable with. It takes quite a bit to gain his trust and get him to the point where he'll be relaxed around someone, though. He also has some major self-esteem issues, and has the tendency to berate himself over trivial things. He tends to keep a lot penned-up inside as well...many times his OCD has been dismissed by onlookers as him being 'overly a**l' and the fidgeting 'adult AD/HD'. Because he doesn't talk about himself much, it leaves people to wonder what exactly is wrong with him, if in fact there is anything wrong. Sometimes his co-workers comment about him being so quiet and shy, saying 'if he were to die or vanish the only reason anyone'd notice is because his paperwork would start to pile up.'

Character Background:
Noah was born in Germany, and lived with his mother, father, and two older sisters. His father was an alcoholic, and growing up in an alcoholic household, he ended up taking on the 'role' of the overachiever. He worked hard from a young age to impress his father. He learned to read quickly, and even (with the help of his older sisters) learned 'words of the week'. Of course, this did just the opposite he hoped for. It failed to impress his father and he only got yelled at for 'showing off'. His sisters would get angry with him from time to time for getting his father angry, because no one wanted to listen to the fighting. So he became very quiet and reserved, and kept to himself. He stopped being an overachiever and sunk into mediocrity.

Of course, a mother can only watch her children take so much before she's had enough. So one day, she gathered up the kids while he was at work and left. His mother had been slowly hoarding money until she had enough to get them plane tickets and passports, and there are speculations that not all of them were exactly legal. Noah was about eight at the time, and consequently knew only basic English-- poor English at that. After he and his family got settled in, his mother made offers to enroll them in school, or at least get a tutor. By far, she was the one in the family who knew the most English. Noah was given a tutor for a few years to help him learn basic English so he may enter elementary school in a year or so.

He was enrolled in public school two years later, when he had enough basic English to comprehend the teachers and initiate conversation. He also went down to what was called the 'Resource room' to work on his English skills and ask for help on any homework he didn't understand during the other student's 'reading and writing' time.

He wasn't really picked on during grade school; in fact, most of the children were very intrigued by the fact he 'talked so funny'. And since he was at the resource room a lot, getting help and understanding of customs and work, the children never had much of a chance to interact. Of course, this worked as a double-edged sword, dulling his social skills in exchange for academics.

It was when he got to middle school that he had the biggest problem though. The older kids weren't as accepting of the fact he spoke so funny and acted so nervous. They made it a point to tease him, calling him a 'bookworm' and 'geek'. Not to mention that heavy German accent of his made kids laugh, and his misuse of English words...well, it just added to their comedy.

At home about that time, things were also starting to degrade. His mother was a total neat freak before, but her penchant for order seemed to become more of an obsession. She flipped out if even the slightest thing was out of place, going on quite the tirade. To her, EVERYTHING had a place that was theirs and NOT anything else's. She was known to scream and stomp around, slamming doors and pitching things everywhere; well, if one thing was out of order, why not everything else? After all, they MUST HAVE wanted to live in a pigpen, she ranted. It was quite scary for Noah. He began to take on some of her obsessiveness about cleaning, panicking when things at school were out of place. The kids saw this as another way to tease him, and habitually messed up his desk or pencil case and timed him to see how long before he spazzed and had to reorganize.

It didn't get any better in high school either. Due to his blue eyes and blond hair, and his German heritage, many of the kids called him 'Nazi', 'Aryan', and 'Hitler Youth'. More than once, a kid scraped a swastika into his locker. The teachers did intervene, telling the other kids to 'leave him alone' and giving them a strong chastisement. This naturally served to cause animosity between the bullies and Noah. They called him a snitch and things...well, they got nasty. Ah, Highschool drama. Of course, along with the usual taunting, the meaner kids picked up on the fact he didn't have a girlfriend, nor did he seem to interested; he was more into books than women. They gave up on the race-oriented teasing (it was only interesting for so long), and moved to calling him things like 'fairy' and 'girly-man' and 'f*****t'. Noah eventually just gave up fighting and arguing with the boys after awhile, and learned to ignore and take the abuse, soaking it up like a sponge to hold until he could release his tension later when he was alone. He had very low self-esteem and actually began to believe everything that went wrong was his fault. His mom took up drinking around that time, and her obsessive-compulsive nature seemed to be getting even further out of hand as she took on odd habits and rituals. Her anger problems seemed to increase as well. Noah became distressed at the fact that something he thought he had escaped long ago was coming back to haunt him. Once again, Noah took an alcoholic sufferers' role; this time, that of the scapegoat. It always seemed his sisters could do no wrong, that they were angels, and everything was his fault.

He lived with all of the stress, watching as his sisters grew and left as fast as they could. The middle sister stayed with him for awhile, trying to help him through everything, but she could only stay so long before she left him. Once Noah hit 18, he left, hoping the rest of his life would be better.

He ended up staying on a dorm on-campus at the college he was attending, and began to study biology and genetics. He wasn't teased as much in college, as the maturity level of the students were higher, and the drama that accompanied high school had been, for the most part, sloughed off. But he never really made many friends in college; he was still too nervous to really get out there and meet new people. He started to apply himself more in college, trying to aim for more than the bare minimum or average standard. He seemed to excel more in such an environment, and his grades and rank showed this. He attended school during the summer to accelerate the time in which he could obtain a degree in biology, paying off for his college time with scholarships, grants, and loans. He eventually went to work for a medicine and technology company known as SOL-Labs, working in their genetic research department. During this time he did a lot of tests on lab mice, working specifically with inbred strains and "knockout mice".

However, it's not all a happy ending; Noah's mother lost contact with him, intentionally distancing herself, and his oldest sister supposedly (though this is under scrutiny) 'committed suicide in a drug rehab center'. And his remaining sister had cut herself off from the family completely, not wanting to be reminded of any of the past, instead focusing on what future she could make with her new husband and kids. Noah is pretty much alone, not having a current girlfriend or any family. He has taken trips (business related, usually) to Germany, liking to be in his homeland...though due to the age he left, nothing there is terribly familiar. It was only in the last past year he moved from Seattle (the area he was currently living in, and where his branch of Sol-Labs was based) back to germany to work on the branch of Sol-Labs there. He hasn't make an effort to contact his father, not remembering very many things about him. Instead, he's tried to enjoy his new life, acting as if he were seeing things for the first time instead of trying to dig up faded memories.

How does your Character get to/why was your character chosen for the Island?:
One of the ways I've been thinking of is that perhaps Moreau contacted Noah about animal testing, asking him if he would be interested in participating in a study of animal genetics. Since Noah already had lab experience, he would seem like a likely candidate for such a study, but how to lure him away from his job? He already works for a fairly successful lab. But Moreau is a crafty man, and has a way around this: he tells Noah that the study is a summit of sorts, with representatives from various labs and companies. Noah, after some deliberation, takes some vacation time to attend, though he doesn't know just what he's getting into... [NOTE: Yeah, this is fairly basic. This is the one I'd have to work on the most. Any suggestions on this part would be very helpful]

What Animal Serum do you want?:
Serum 54- basic anthropomorphic serum. As for animal; the Common House Mouse, preferably an albinistic strain.

Describe your ideal 100% appearance:
By 100%, he looks basically like a mouse that walks on two legs. But what does this entail? Well, his once flat face will have pushed out to make the soft, rounded muzzle of a mouse's, his teeth having extended into the typical buck incisors. The wire of his braces will have bent and, in some places, snapped, leading the geneticist's to remove the wire between brackets to prevent the discomfort of wires jabbing him in the cheek. Now, only the brackets remain stuck to the teeth, a lingering reminder of what he once was. The rest of his teeth will have shifted, his mouth and tooth structure closer to that of a rodent's than a humans. Consequently, his diet will have changed substantially as well, his preferance for meat being nearly muted and replaced for a new love of grains, with some fruits and vegetable holding new interest with him (while just the thought of other produce will make him feel a little ill, and ingesting them will make him feel even worse). From his face, near to his nose (which is in typical rodent fashions), whiskers will have grown in, adding a new level of sensual perception.

He still goes on two legs, however instead of walking on didigtgrade, he walks more on plantgrade. His feet will have grown substantially, toes and feet growing longer, toenails seeming more like small claws than typical nails. His hand are tipped with the same claws, though they are kept filed down and shorter than the ones on his toes. As for the hands themselves, they retain the same basic shape of a human's, only a littler smaller and the fingers a bit shorter. Speaking of short, during the change to mouse, he will have lost a few inches, seeming even shorter now than he was before. His clothes won't have torn during transformation; not much, anyways, since he hasn't really grown bigger. The only real clothing changes will be that he can no longer wear his shoes (his feet being to big for them now), and his pants will have torn in the back where his tail came in. Only the shift of some body parts will have caused small tears; the rest is from the wear and tear of island life. His hair will have blended in a little with his fur, becoming aa white as his fur (hey, albinistic means everything is white, regardless of what color the hair was before) and somewhat shaggier (not quite as styled as it was when he first arrived, and maybe a little shorter), with only the slightest hint of the former style.

What started as a short stub of a tail has now grown longer in proportion to his body, covered with a soft, downy fur (mouse's tails have some fur on them, more so than the nearly hairless tail of their rat relatives). His entire body has become covered with a soft, white fur (which grew in white to begin with), except for his front and back feet. Although, the backs of his paws and top of his feet do have some fur, it's not as thick as the fur found on his body, and it considerably sparser. His eyes are that of a rat's, losing their former icy-blue color as the pigmentation diminished, giving is eyes a new red coloration (or rather, lack of coloration; the red comes from the light reflecting off the blood vessels inside the eyes). Due to the albinism in his eyes, this means his eyes will have a sensitivity to the harsh island sun; just another change he'll have to adapt to (or use his sunglasses more).

Now, let it be noted that this is only a guideline of my concept, I don't really have many specifications on what HAS to be the same (except I do request that he walks on plantgrade and that the fur comes in colored white to begin with); I'm pretty open about interpretation. I'm intrigued to see how the artist interprets the concepts.

Why this animal/plant for your character?:
First of all, mice are frequently used in lab research, and along with that, Noah worked with them (despite the fact mice creep him out), so the irony factor of a role reversal comes into play (hey, Moreau has to get his kicks somehow). But in fact, it is more than that. The traditional view of a mouse is being shy, timid and skiddish and fairly meek. This, I feel, matches Noah's personality fairly well. Mice are also very meticulous nestkeepers (along with rats, despite the misconceptions about both); they specify a certain area to be used as a bathroom, and are always tending their nest area, keeping it clean and organized. This seems reminiscent of Noah's organizational OCD habits, huh? Like I said, the mouse makes a keen personality match. Plus, it would be interesting to see how the change of role would effect Noah; the sudden new looks, instincts, diet, and the relationship of the predators on the island to his prey-- mice are pretty low on the food chain, after all.

But why albinistic? The truth is that most mice-- especially those used in labs-- tend to be albinistic in nature due to the inbreeding of strains. And perhaps having him become and albinistic mouse makes the role reversal concept seem more 'real' (the color variations are more common in fancy mice, the domesticated, pet-stock version anyways, though albinism seems to be becoming more popular in that breed as well).

What do you think really makes this concept? Why you?
I believe that along with bringing the amusement of the role reversal factor, Noah brings a certain degree of reality to the island as well. While the facts of OCD and whatnot may seem overwhelming to his character, it is, in fact, realistic. To make his backstory and personality without the disorder would be more unrealistic than making it with them, requiring a vast amount of suspension of belief and defiance of psychological reality. More people than you would think have these same issues.

But on the same note, though he does have problems, it makes him more real. In this day and age, to be flawless and sound is a little more abnormal than having some issues. Hey, we all have our baggage, whether you admit it or not. But at the same time, though his disorders sound imposing, he isn't really unrealistically flawed. He is 'perfectly imperfect.' And he seems to function in a different way then most people with issues act. He's rather quiet an reserved about his issues, keeping them bottled up inside of himself instead of being 'in your face, has a problem, pity me please.' In basic terms: he may be a bit on the 'emo angst' side, but he's no drama llama.

Other than that, I feel the just seeing how he would adapt to the changes in appearance, diet and habits (including how he would handle the sensitivity to light that having the albinistic eyes entails) would be interesting. Would he freak out? Would he learn (after the first changes) how to deal with it? How will he ultimately accept being a giant mouse? How will he deal with the predators of the island (quite a few prey on small mammals such as mice)? All these questions (incidentally, points in which also make the serum choice interesting as well) and what ifs could produce some interesting results, and make for intriguing RP, I feel.

Species Info

What do you think of when you see a mouse? Do you think of women jumping up on to chairs screaming hysterically? Do you get confused and think of a rat? Or do you associate them with lab testing? No matter what comes to mind for you, a mouse is still a mouse.

Wow, that end sentance sucked. But I forgot where I was going so deal with it XD

Name: Mus musculus; the common house mouse
Habitat/Range: Many of this breed have been domesticated (fancy mice), but there are also many feral mice out there too. And this being the most common breed of mice...they're just about everywhere! As their name implies, these mice tend to make their homes in someones house, living in the basement, walls, or wherever they can find a cozy place to nest. however, they aren't specifically indoors; some make their homes outside in dens.
Diet: The assertion that mice love cheese is actually false! Many mice don't actually like cheese, and it can cause serious digestive upsets if they have too much. Instead, most mice eat a mixed diet of fruits, vegtables, and grains-- one reason they are seen as pests (they damage crops quite a bit in their hunt for food).
In testing: Mice are used very often in lab tests. They are valuble because not only can several generations be observed in a matter of a year or two. Not only that, but since they are mamals, they bare a lot of internal similarities to humans. But mice can be tested on and expirimented on in ways that would be considered unethical to humans to obtain valuable data. There are, however, some animal rights groups that believe mice should not be subjected to testing. However, the topic of animals used in science is a hot debate.

More information on mice and information on how they are used in lab testing can be found here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mouse (haha, more cheap cut and paste for now)

Condensed Bio!
Just add water!

Note: This is a short(er) version of the bio up top. This is for the person who voted tl;dr, and for anyone else who would rather not read my monster of a bio XD;; This will give you a clue, but honestly, the longer bio is a lot better. This lacks the 'why this animal', 'what makes this concept', 'ideal 100%' and whatnot. So, if you have time, read the longer one. if not, this will do.

Name: Noah Volgan
Age: 26
Physical description:
Appearance:
Noah is fairly short for a guy, standing only 5'6, though he's long-waisted, so he seems a bit taller then he actually is. He's also very thin, weighing roughly 142lbs (the average small-boned individual for this height bracket weighs about 146 at least). His figure is very svelte and lithe, and he's physically weak and slightly frail. He has no real pronounced muscles to speak of, though it isn't like he's all pudge. He's just a rather thin individual (though it's not like he's all skin and bones either).

He has blond hair kept in a feathered sort of hairdo that falls just short of his shoulders.

Clothing:

Personality:
Noah is a fairly bright man, and has a deep love for music, preferring the soft melodic tones of classical composers and jazz as opposed to the loud raucous music of today. Rap in particular gives him a headache.

He's a highly skittish and nervous individual, especially around new people and women.

He tends to keep a lot penned-up inside as well, not being very adept at communicating his feelings to others.

Bio/Background:
Noah was born in Germany, though moved to the states with hismother and two sisters when he was very young (about cool . After some work, he was enrolled in grade school. He had a little trouble grasping the concepts, not because he was dumb, but because he didn't speak much english. He spoke fragmented english at best, knowing some words, but not really knowing how to set them up in a sentence. Consequently he was, for the first few years living in the states, home-schooled under the direction of a tutor his mother hired. When he was ten, he was released into public school after he knew enough English to comprehend the teachers and initiate conversation. However, his English was still a work-in-progress, so he was very quiet most of the time, and when he spoke, he did so with a very heavy German accent. He didn't encounter as much crisicism at that age, the other kids being more or less interested in where he came from and why he talked so funny. He didn't get through without some teasing, however, but it wasn't overly scathing.

But once he got to Middle school, the teasing began to get far worse. The older kids began to pick on him not only for having such an odd way of speaking and strange customs, but also because he was a bit of a bookworm and geek. Right around that time, his home life was becoming increasingly hectic, his mother's behavior becoming rather...erratic and obsessive.

High school was even worse. The teasing got far worse, even rascist. Due to his blonde hair and blue eyes and German heritage, he was called things like 'Aryan', 'Hitler Youth' and 'Nazi', to name a few choice phrases. Mre than once, he had a Swastika scraped into his locker. He tried talking to the teacher once or twice, but the reprocussions earned him the reputation of teacher's pet and snitch. After a bit, the bullies added new material to their repetoire. They took notice of the fact he didn't show much interest in women, perferring to bury himself in books instead of persuing any girls. They challanged his masculenity, calling him things like 'girly-man', 'fairy', and 'f*****t'. Noah eventually gave up protesting and fighting them, and learned to ignore and take the abuse, soaking everything up like a spnge until he could release the tension later when he was alone.

His mother took up drinking around his high school years, and her obsessive-compulsive nature began to become more intense. Noah slipped into the role of the family scapegoat, seeming to take the brunt of everything that was wrong. It seemed that his sister were angels and could do not wrong, and that everything was instead his fault. Noah had very low self-esteem the begin with and very slowly began to believe that if something bad happened to him, then he must have done something to deserve it, whether that fact was true or not.

Noah lived with all the stress until he was 18 and finally moved out. He ended up staying at a dorm on-campus at the college he was attending, and went on to major in biology-- more specifically, in the field of genetics. He wasn't teased as much in college, and without the stress of home life and bullies effecting him, he was really able to excell. He even took summer courses to reduce the time it would take to earn his degree. He worked very hard for his grades, and was able to pay his way through college with the help of scholarship, grants, and loans. But despite his education, he never really had that many friends though, being too nervous, shy and meek to really branch out and meet new people.

In the end, he was hired by a science reasearch and technology company known as SOL-Labs, working in their genetics department. He went on to do a lot of test on lab mice, working a lot with inbred strains and 'knockout mice'. Working for this company required him to move to Seattle- the location of the company's main U.S. branch- but he did so regardless, wanting to subconciously distance himself from all the stress of his past. Noah was left pretty much alone, not having his family or a significant other. He took multiple trips to Germany (most of which were business-related), liking to be in his birthland, even if it wasn't terribly familiar to him. It was only in the past year he moved back to Germany, having transferred to the German branch of SOL-Labs. He hasn't made an effort to contact his father, not remembering very many things about him. Instead, he's tried to enjoy his new life, acting as if he were seeing things for the first time instead of trying to dig up faded memories.

Serum 54; common house mouse, albinistic strain

What Noah brought with him:
[This will be contiually updated when and if I think of more stuff]

-A week's worth of clothing, mostly geared towards a warmer climate
-His standard lab attire (arrived wearing that)
--Short-sleeved button-up shirt with the Sol-Labs logo emblazoned on the chest
-- (alt) His labcoat [packed]
--SOL-Labs nametage
--Brown Khaki pants
--black shoes
--black tanktop/undershirt
-LEO says GER poster
-Pair of Sunglasses
-Pair of sandles
-A few of his notebooks with genetic notes in them
-Laptop with more notes on the hard drive; also serves as a way for him to update his progress
-wristwatch
-writing utensils (a few pens, pencils and mechanical pencils)
-Toletries (toothpaste, toothbrush, those crazy little things you use to clean your braces out, floss, deoderant, etc.)
-Hairbrush and comb
-lab rat plushie (given to him by Arial as a sort of chistmas prezzie)

Now, I just wanted to explain a few of the items.

Lab Coat- all the alt means is he has it, and instead of his lab s**t often wears the coat. I just list it as packed away so i don't have to buy a labcoat for the mule. Them's expensive, dammit. D:

LEO says GER poster-
This is both and hommage and an inside joke. My chemistry teacher taught us this mneumonic to hel us remember the difference between Oxidation and Reduction reactions, since it can be easy to confuse the two. What it stands for is Loss of Electrons is Oxidation (LEO) and Gain of Electrons is Reduction (GER). As for the poster...I need to get a ref up at some point, but it has a cartoon lion on it, with 'LEO says GER' at the top in big letters, and the explaination of the acronym in smaller letters at the bottom. it looks quite a bit like a child's poster, and really the only thing Noah kept from his childhood (he's such a science geek XD)

Lab Rat Plushie- Arial, one of the younger interns, got a little plush lab rat for Noah right around Christmas. She was probably one of the few people that notied Noah and was nice to him, possibly because of her age and sweter demenor. It's sort of a cute little stuffie, and even though Noah doesn't much care for mice and rats, he's kept it as one of the few things that means something to him. Since he was moved around so often as a kid, he tends not to be very attached to items and material things, svae for maybe a few special items he hordes.

Wristwatch-
This is, at first glance, a pretty average wristwatch, but it bears sentimental value to Noah. His older sister gave it to him as a gift for his 13th birthday. It was his first sort of 'grown up' present, and he's kept it fairly well maintained ever since.

O hay, a WIP. Yeah, it is WIP. Noah still needs clothes in that XD and he looks way too young for 26 -needs to fix that for the finished version- Also, scanner ate the freckles he's supposed to have. Also, he lacks arms, a lower body and his hair sucks D: Still, a referance is a reference and its better than most of my art XD.

Side Notes/Other

[PS, this section isn't very organized yet]

Side notes [PS, this section isn't very organized]:

I think I forgot to mention it, but Noah wears braces. I should probably go put that under appearance but...eh, I'll do it later. XD

Also, at some point in his young life (I forget when, exactly), he was beaten pretty badly with a chair leg, and it broke his hip. As with any hip injury, even when it heals right you're left with usually a limp. So ergo, Noah limps a bit on his left side. That will go under background once I figure out where to put it.

Then, as a third note, I'm planning to make Noah's character gay. Yes, gay characters are a dollar a dozen in quest threads and the island, but I feel like I can give some real perspective to the situation, having some...firsthand expirience. -coughs- It's not all flowers and sparkles and skipping down the street like what is portrayed in yaoi; it's also feeling guilt because your life goes against what you've been taught, having friend suddenly hate you, and having orange juice bottle thrown at you from a passing car when all you want to do is walk down to Java Joe's for a coffee. Yeah, it's tough at times, but also rewarding to be honest with yourself and whatnot. Originally I wasn't going to mention this and instead have it revealed on the island through RP as a surprise, but I figured I may as well be up front and post the info down, even if the character himself is not open about it (and in serious denial).

Minor OCD: It's standard knowledge that a person sufferring from acute anxiety may think the same things over and over-- an obsession. They may also perform certain behaviors to cope with this, known as compulsions. A person, such as Noah, that expiriences anxiety-based disordes may have both symptoms, dually known as Obsessive-Complusive Disorder. When we think of OCD, most people think of someone washing their hands a certain amount of times, or doing certain things at certains times for day every day. Noah has encountered the habit of checking and rechecking his work excessively.

My Take on This

My Take/comments on the whole thing:

At first Noah's backstory was a really dramatic sort of thing...almost unrealistic/unbelivable in a soap opera/lifetime story sort of way. I've been taking steps to fix it but...it still comes off as being a bit much. But it's certainly more realistic than it was. I know that backstories with alcoholic families are a dime a dozen, but the reason I don't want to change that aspect is because it's so close to home (plus, the sad reality is that there are a lot of families coping with alcoholism). And yeah, parts of the backstory do kinda resemble the stuff I (or my sister) have been through, so it's not like this could never happen. TRUST ME. And as for his 'disorder' (OCD) I have researched it and either know friends or family with it so hopefully I'll be able to play it out just fine. Oh and PS, the food eating habit...that came from an anecdote my English teacher once told (see, even sane people have odd habits). It was too good to not file away for later use ^w^

As for the German thing...I might have a problem with but I've looked up a lot on their culture -still has the culture handouts he got in german class squirreled away somewhere- and plus, he's lived in America for awhile so...yeah. Whoo for quick fixes! And as for accent...it's probably going to sound a little stereotypical but the only things that show up in textually conveying his accent are how his w's sound a little like v's and how he has issues with the 'th' sound. I had a German girl in our physics class so I draw a little bit from what she sounded like but a lot of the accent stuff is just auditory and won't show up much in textual representation. So use your imaginations.

I think the aspect I'm most amused by is the scientist to mouse thing. Hurr. Yes, it seems fitting and a little cliche but it's an idea I've worked with since that faithful contest so long ago. Plus, Noah is awfully skiddish and timid...just like the stereotypical image of a mouse. Aw.

And I promise I'll try to improve the way he gets to the island. Hopefully. Ideas on that end are welcomed. Hell, any feedback is good as long as it's constructive and intelligently presented. But that shouldn't be a problem with you folks, huh? wink

Koko's Corner
[Even though it's not really a corner]

My info:

Oh crap. Now you want info on ME. joy.

Name: Kokonotsu
RL Name: Kyle
Age: A lady never asks and a gentleman never tells wink (okay, okay; 19)
Gender: Male (though I do share this account with a female friend too)
Location: Maine, the boonies of the US (I swear we aren't all hicks....just the ones up north in Aroostook -bricked-)
Likes: RPGS, RP, Writing, reading, drawing (even though I suck at it), webcomics, various styles of music, shiney objects, pie
Dislikes: Bigots, people trying to force their religion/viewpoints onto me, having juice bottles tossed at me out car windows, elitists, hypocrites, annoying fangirls (note: normal fangirls are typically alright), chatspeak, uncapitalized i's, ham
Other: I hate writing these things, really I do. But I needed a post to take up space so here ya go. Most people refer to me as Koko...on and off Gaia XD;; Very few refer to me as Kyle. Hell, one girl calls me 'Gertrude' in the main IoDM thread (joy XD) and another (not on Gaia) calls me Conner, of all things. Point is, as long as it's not offensive or utterly stupid and I know you're referring to me, call me anything. I'm also pretty laid bck and hard to offend but if you piss me off or get on my nerves (rudely insulting my ideas, stealing any of my concepts or pestering/badmouthing my friends are things that will, without a doubt, piss me off), be prepared...I can be pretty merciless. Rawr.
