Tariq sat quietly upon the steps that lead up to the shrine, legs stretched out over the stairs before him. He had a lollipop pushed off in the side of his cheek, and his tail idly thumped the ground behind him. It was a fairly warm day, as was expected during summer. He lifted a striped wrist and wiped it over his brow. The humidity was pretty bad also, as the shrine was relatively close to the lake. His choice in clothing colors also didn't help much, his black pants made it feel like his legs were on fire. He drew in a deep and slow breath, releasing the flower that he had been picking apart. It was a slow, hot, lazy summer day at the shrine today. No one had really stopped by... He pushed one of his ears behind his back and let out a sigh.

He'd gotten tired at their hectic household, what with Freize's recent dissapearance and all of his 'siblings' running amuck. Another sigh, and his red gaze sought out the sky.

Urza sniffed the air curiousely as he strode ahead of Mordecai up the path that lead to the shrine.

"You're right master," the grey wolf growled in a low voice "There's something about this place that has the same scent as that stone you picked up a few days ago."

Mordecai nodded to his servant. He knew it did. The stone in his pocket had told him. The closer they seemed to get to the shrine, the more "excited" the stone in his pocket seemed to become. Like it was going to see an old friend.

As they slowly began to aproach the shrine, the professor limping along on his cane, Mordecai realized that this shrine was dedicated to the Sun. This was given away by the runes and symbols that represented the sun, and a few [from what Mordecai could tell from the near-ruined shrine] purposely made holes to filter in light for rituals.

Urza and Mordecai then saw the boy that was sitting alone on the steps of the Shrine. He looked very lonely, and yet he seemed rather at home on the steps of the shrine, and by his strange apperance, Mordecai could almost instictivly tell that he was not lost.

Almost as if reading his mind, Urza whispered to his master, " Perhaps we should ask him?"

"I agree," Mordecai whispered back before hailing the boy with a wave and a good "Hello there boy!"

The young lad had been very contentedly staring off into the vast expanse of sky above him, right until his thoughts were interupted by a voice. He shifted, pale face turning in the direction of the noise. His startlingly bright red gaze fell onto the man in a manner surprisingly calm, and there was something about this child which made him seem much older. There was this strong air of sorrow about him, the sort of sadness that followed forgotten dreams or utter loneliness, yet this air did not seem to match to its creator's expression nor behavior. It simply was there.

"Tari." The boy corrected without hesitation, for he most certainly was NOT named boy. He stood and brushed off his rump, tail twitching slighty. The dirt clung to the black of his pants. He wasn't very fond of it. His gaze strayed once again to the visitors, "Can I help you?" He began moving towards the man who had called for him, and felt a dull throb in his chest. It wasn't a usual talent that those of his kind had, but Tari had found he got this strange vibe whenever he approached a stone and he was getting that feeling now. He looked into the older male's eyes with a look of inquiry, "Have you found a strange stone?" He moved his lollipop to his other cheek, making a soft slurping noise.

Mordecai and Urza both looked at each other and nodded their heads. By the boys eyes, Mordecai could tell that he could be trusted, and by his words knew that they had in fact come to the right place. Mordecai fished into his right pocket until he pulled out Davin's stone and held it out to Tari.

Urza on the other hand, was very intrigued by the boy's scent, and immediatly went up to Tariq and began to pace and circle about him; trying to figure out who he was and why he was here.

"Yes, Tari. I was wondering if you could tell me a bit about it. I watched it fall from the sky a few nights ago, and recently thought about using it in one of my experiments, but something about the stone told me not to. But I'd still like to know, what it is," he gave Tariq a inquisitional twinkle of his eye "Perhaps you can tell me?"

The boy delicately took the stone from the older man, sparing a glance towards the beast circling him. He lifted the stone towards the sky now, holding it gently between two fingers and tilting it so that it glittered fantastically in the sunlight. Sun's blessing... Bits and pieces of information popping up in his mind, fading away... Twisting, morphing, disapearing. He lowered it slowly, "I know... Some."

The pale child's head tilted somewhat, "He is like me." He went silent for a moment after that, a hand lifting to run through his hair. "Like me... We come as stones, and then we turn into... Living things.. My father-Freize..." He felt a twinge of pain at mentioning the missing weremutt's name. "We haven't figured out why, really.." A moments hesitation--he honestly had no clue. He had yet to regain memories, nor had their origin been found out by either he or his caretaker. "Something about the sun, I think. The sun's blessing..." He drifted off, looking towards the sky. "I don't know... My father found a stone, and says that it turned into me.. We're trying to figure out why now... And..." He shook his head. He was rambling.

"The sun's blessing..." Mordecai contemplated as he sat down next to Tariq, "Could that have been the mana that I saw surrounding the stone as it fell from the sky?" he said as he pulled out a notepad that contained a condensed version of his notes on Davin, when suddenly the news of what the boy had said hit him.

"You came from a stone like this!?" he exclaimed amazed, as he tried to examine closer, the inside of the stone that was still in Tariq's hand.

Urza's voice passed over Tariq's shoulder to Mordecai "They do have a similar scent master," he announced "It's faint, but very similar."

"Maybe..." The child muttered, although he didn't fully comprehend what the older man told him. He watched the man calmly, although his focus was really still on what lay in his hand. He could almost feel a pulse from it if he kept as still as possible.. It was the feeling of energy, of something living. He knew it. It was something somehow familiar, really.

He arched his brows and peered over at the man as he spoke once more, curious about his tone of amazement, "Yes... Although I think mine looked kind of different... It was white. A white stone.." Which wasn't really surprising, looking at the boy's complexion and main colors. "With a little black... But yes, I came from a stone." His eyes shifted towards Urza uncertainly as the thing spoke.

Mordecai noticed Tariq's uncertain glance towards Urza and suddenly realized that he hadn't introduced himself.

"Oh, I'm sorry Tari! This is Urza, my servant; or familiar if you'd prefer to call him that. I'm Mordecai, and I'm a former professor of alchemy."

Urza noticed the boy's distant disposition, and decided to prompt Mordecai into a demonstration that would hopefully stop the boy from looking so melancholy

"Do you know what alchemy is?" the wolf inquired the boy.

Tariq nodded, "Nice to meet you." He shifted and extended the palm which the man's stone lay in, returning it. "I'm certain he's like me..." His voice drifted out as the creature spoke, curiousity beginning to form behind the boy's vivid ruby colored eyes. "Alchemy..?"

He had to ponder on that for a moment, had he heard of that..? He was almost certain he hadn't. His ears shifted slightly-they only moved on occasion, as they were much to heavy for the usual constant movement most other's ears went though. "I don't think so..." He shook his head, "Uh-uh, I haven't."

Mordecai cleared his throat picking up on Urza's hint. He decided to pick up for the wolf, as he was the expert on the subject.

"Alchemy Tari, is the magical understanding and experimentation of the four elements: Earth, Wind, Water, and Fire and their boundairies, if any. With enough understanding of alchemy, it's possible to turn something of the same element into another thing of the same element. Like granite to gold. " Mordecai then reached for a matchbox in his cloak that he used to light his pipe, and struck a match in front of Tari and held it upsideown.

"Or, push the boundaries of these elements to turn something like fire," Mordecai snapped his fingers, and instantly the flame solidified into a blue crystal and dropped itself from the match "Into ice." He said, handing the boy the small flame shaped peice of ice.

Mild fascination filled the child's eyes, and he took the piece of ice into his hands, examining it thoroughly. What a neat demonstration... He most definately approved. "That's really interesting..." He admitted, pondering quietly over what he was just told before looking up to the man in a curious sort of manner. Yet there was still something, a question, lingering in this inquisitive young man's mind. He offered the ice back now, head tilting itself to one side. "Can you turn it back, as well?"

He wanted to hear and see all about this alchemy, and wondered how far it could push boundaries.. He quite enjoyed the display, as well. A smile now crept across his lips, and there was a bittersweet kind of joy that came from him. There was happiness, sure, yet there was always that heavy air of melancholy hanging about him that never seemed to fade even as he stood there smiling earnestly.

Both Urza and Mordecai were pleased with Tariq's mild change in mood. This was all just simple elemetnal shifting that they were performing right now, but it seemed to amuse the boy as much as they hoped it would.

Then Tari posed his question. This was a risky thing to do to Mordecai, as he really hated being asked stupid questions. However, seeing as how Tari seemed like a bright boy, Mordecai was obliged to answer.

"Yes, it would just be reversing the elemental shift. Turning fire into ice was simply a matter of quickly turning the fire to air to water to ice," Now taking the peice of ice back from Tariq, he explained "There's a part of every element that wants to be like the next, or previous element in its cycle, and if you find and trigger that point, it will shift."

Mordecai then moved his hand about the peice of ice that was now slightly melting in his hand, clearly looking for something. Then, when he was certain of his hand position, he snapped his fingers again and the ice combusted in Mordecai's hand in a flash of fire and disapeared, evaporating the water from the melted ice along with it.
