H'okay. So I've got another little story.
This year, we had a new addition to our choir. Claire, a new, 8th grade student. A student who received about 4/5 of all the solos this year. WITHOUT AUDITIONING. Because you see, Claire's not just any ordinary soprano, she's a soprano who has known our director since she was five. Things were already bad from the beginning. First off, the girl stank, and nobody in 8th grade outside of choir liked her anyway. Second, she was constantly bragging about how she's in a choir outside of school, and she had been singing since she was a wee one, etc. etc. She's a decent singer, I'll give her that. But she's not AMAZING. And whenever she goes too high she becomes all nasal...anyway. Even though she was already grabbing all the concert solos, the unanimous hatred for her increased when our director moved her to the Altos because she thought we "needed some help, since we're too quiet" Oh, I don't know, maybe it's because the Sopranos are TWICE the size of the Altos! Our director doesn't even CONSIDER putting 6th grade girls in the alto section. And once she became cantor for the school masses, the only opportunity left for obtaining solos, especially for the wee little 6th graders, it put her about a hundred miles past the point of no return.
Mind you, our hatred for her was already intensified by her actions outside of choir....
Discussion: Battles for the limelight in your choir? Directors' pets? And anything else somewhat related to the story.

It happens alot in my choir. I'm in a treble choir, so already it's an audition choir. Well there was one senior in the choir. She was good but she got more solos because she was a senior. The choir director didn't even audition the solos they went directly to her alot. The one solo I got the director cut the song because none of the girls learned it but me. It was frustrating because I wanted to do another solo later on and we didn't even audition that one and she just gave in to her and she couldn't hit the notes so they took a part of it down an octave when I could hit every note and they didn't even consider anyone else.

There`s this girl I went to elementary school with, Brooke, that was exactly the same way. Then in middle school, she got a major kick in the a**. Never got a single solo. Didn`t make it into the high school Women`s Choir with me, either. ^.^ Karma.

Just happened last concert. All through the rehersals nobody wanted a solo, but when someone got it by default, it was like World War III among everyone saying things like "Why did they get it if they didn't audition?" when they were the only cantidate. sweatdrop

Yeah, I hate that kind of stuff! Prima donnas kinda suck.
I've always had battling prima donnas in my grade... or even prima donna wannabes.
My one friend, who is currently is the lead in our barbershop quartet, I was really worried that she and I would be serious rivals all through high school. We always went out for the same things and she was a really good soprano singer. Then, this year, it just turned out that we have always have had infinite respect for each other. Now, we're collaberating a lot on songs and quartets and things. ^^ It's really cool.
But things haven't always worked out that way. My other friends have always been really jealous of me getting solos and point it out constantly. And I've had other people, who just realized they could sing this year, popping out of the woodworks and acting like they own the place. That's annoying too.
But, despite of all of this, everyone just has to believe that without that certain person giving them solos, they could never make it in the music world. Keep working at your own craft. Surpass her and kick her musically incompatent behind! (sounds mean, but sometimes you just gotta do that kinda thing)
^^ Good luck with dealing with the prima donnas. And always remember that sopranos can't be altos (or at least most). But altos can be sopranos!

Oh yes, in high school I loved the people who would automatically get assigned the solo parts and then skip choir on a regular basis for whatever reasons. ARGH! nothing made me angrier my senior year.

HermioneTwin Actually angelofmusic, I've proven Sopranos can be altos. 'tis fun, 'tis fun. I can sing Soprano 1 al the way down to low Alto 2. Whoah, you've got an awesome range, when I'm warmed up, I can go higher than most, I can reach the alto 1s on their kinda lower parts. lol Yeah right, my range is high, not low. AT ALL. On topic: My choir director is a really fair person and sometimes even has the solo auditions in front of the class so she can get the class's reaction too. It's fun. I tried one, but when I was almost done, the bell rang. The class waited, though. I had about six people go up to me after, saying, "I didn't know you could sing!"

One time for a song i tried to get the solo in the beginning.. When i sang everyone clapped and i was sure that i got it.. Other girls tried but werent able to get the high note. Then suddenly my director said "Let Sienna try" im not trying to rain on that girl's parade but it's not fair since she always gets solos because she's known the director ever since she was little.. i was so pissed off and the next few days everyone agreed with me saying that i deserved the part.. Sometimes choir to me feels like a competition and i dont like feeling like that...

there's a guy in my chorus who's amazingly gifted (there are many people who sing better than him though) in music...he was even on american idol! so he got like a majoority of the solos in chorus and he's her favorite so he does EVERYTHING. It gets annoying.

In my choir, we're a little TOO casual (Although, it is a no-audition choir, the only thing my school offers) about that sort of thing- most of us don't have much for competitive urges until the Musical rolls around.
My choir director believes in giving people a chance- she has us from 6th to our senior year, and 6-8th she learns where our range is and our talent, and then in high school she uses it- As a freshman, I got a duet at conference choir with a senior, and one of my friends got a duet with a sophomore (Altough, to tell the truth, that didn't turn out so good. Neither were strong singers, and the microphones were set up wrong.
And we have semi-auditions- she has people volunteer to sing the solo during choir, and picks the best one.

Where I'm from they just pick who they want and they aren't always necessarily the best singers. Some people get very indignant about it and freak out and crap. I'm just getting used to it. We have a new choir teacher though so a lot of us are hoping that things will turn out better and be fairer this time around. But Devin has gotten so much media attention and press that I doubt our guys will really have a choice at all in the matter and that really sucks. The girls though (YES!) are up for grabs. Maybe someone else who's really good will get a chance this time around.

We're non-audition, btw.
We'll learn a song, and then after we know it fairly well, our director will announce, "Auditions for this song, and this song next week." Auditions are done in front of the rest of the choir to thin out the numbers and get rid of those who are easily stage fright. Our choir director definitely doesn't always pick the best singer. Her method is to "match the voice to the song." But she still DOES pick favorites, because even though less prominent members of the choir, like myself, get solos once in a while, her favorites have at least one big solo, and possibly another smaller one at ever concert. They're also the first picks for mass solos, where auditions are done during the rehearsal right before the mass.

I take back all the crap I said about Devin. We had a class and he really proved that he deserved every da*n thing he'd gotten. He's brilliant and knows what he's talking about. And while he mayn't be the best singer ever he CAN sing so it's not that annoying when he gets something the rest of us want.
