What are your opinions on non-mainstream jazz instruments (flute, banjo, cello... etc...)? Do you think jazz should be limited to saxes/bones/trumpets/rhythm/vox?

Personally, after hearing Herbie Mann and Chick Corea's stuff, my mind has been opened to a variety of possible jazz instruments.

BTW, has anyone heard of Tom Bacon? (the jazz french hornist)

also, flute is not really considered a non-mainstream instrument for jazz, many jazz songs are played with flute.

Flute has become pretty popular in jazz ensembles. I've always thought they sounded pretty cool, especially if you have an alto or tenor flute. (I actually just found out today that somewhere in the storage room of the band camp that I'm teaching at there is a bass flute. Finding it is now my top priority). I've also played in a Jazz ensemble with a bassoon player before. It was...unique.

Ah, I should look through our pieces to see if we have any that use a bassoon razz . I've been playing bassoon for a year now and am curious to hear what it sounds like in jazz. But I totally agree. Flute has become more mainstream now, but I meant traditional jazz (like big band)

Joe Farrel from the first Return to Forever is easily my favorite jazz flautist. He's kind of like Coltrane, on flute. Emphasis on kind of.
When he plays tenor, I'm not as impressed.

DeRivvera is a great jazz floutist
And I play flute in jazz band and I had a feature this year called Hey Sammy!... I hate that song...
but i think flutes are great for the sexy... slow pace sort of songs... like 'Just A Beautiful Night Like This' and what not
jazz cello.. THATS a new one!

Jazz flute is really popular nowadays. Last year, the flute/alto sax player in our Jazz Band played the main riff as a solo in "(Somewhere) Over The Rainbow." It totally rocked our socks off

As for other strange jazz instruments, I played tuba in about a third of our Jazz Band songs (Trombone and Bass Guitar on the other two thirds) and that was really fun. I had a mambo-style improvised solo which sounded superb

Some songs I think there is no way in heck it will sound good with a flute. The song Sing Sing Sing is one for example. We played that song at IAJE (International Association of Jazz Educators) this year and I felt so out of place as a flutist.

Tuba has quite a history in Jazz. It was a staple in ragtime and early big-band music.

And while I haven't heard a cello in a jazz band yet, I have seen it in a rock band twice. It was really sweet.

You remember correctly.

Anyone heard the jazz violin player in the Mahavishnu Orchestra? He's not too shabby at playing fusion.
