Not a dub vs sub debateThis thread is for discussing why companies dub anime, why you do/don't like dubs and what you think of anime made in English. Kungfu movies are dubbed, French art films are not, the fact that most anime is dubbed must mean that its viewed as a lower form of entertainment. Ask John refers to dubs as "anime training wheels" that make viewing foriegn media easier. There are many anime dubs that have good acting but it seems when they do the character is portrayed differently, and may not be acurate to what the creators orginally intended. Alot of anime made nowdays is coproduced by American compaines (PPGZ, Imortal Grand Prix, Animatix), so the English version is made the same time as the Japanese, therefore both are equally valid portrayals of the characters. The only anime I have seen that was made in English is Armitage the III: Polymarix, which is a horrible movie, but the acting is EXCELLENT.

A lot of times, I do look at dub tracks as an 'indoctrination' tool. I have several friends/relatives/etc. that are receptive to anime, but would never have the patience or eyesight to read subtitles.
I approve, I suppose.

I prefer dubs because I'd rather be watching the screen seeing what's going on, rather than watching the screen to see what they're saying. Plus, if I want to get up to make a sandwich, or if the phone rings, I don't have to pause it because I can't see the screen. Ideally, I'd love to know Japanese, but companies dubbing the anime I would watch helps tremendously.
This isn't to say I dislike subbing. I have a fair amount of subs in my possession. I'm only stating that ifI have choice between a well-done sub, and a well-done dub, I will choose the dub.

I actually might be the only one who prefers subs.. with of course voices in them. Mind you I don't mind well done dubs. I'd just pick the sub over the dub.
Why I'm comfortable with subs? I grew up am growing up with subs. I mean, I'm supposed to be speaking Mandarin but I can only semi-understand it. I NEED subtitles. So it doesn't bother me. I'm able to watch movies while reading the subtitles.
Also I think I'm more comfortable watching a sub over watching the licensed dub. Why? It might be because I'm so used to the voice actors that it seems so different to me not to hear the other voices. I mean, Echizen Ryoma from Prince of Tennis has a woman voice actor. It creeps the hell out of me when in the musical Ryoma is played by a man. It just bothers my little soul.
My answer usually is just a gut feeling. IT JUST DOES. I know that's not a good reason but I have no other explanation. It's my own feeling that I can't explain. Kind of like love... >>

I think it was.. Ultraman? or something on FoxBox a while before it became 4KidsTV. >> THAT REALLY bothered me.

I never watched it but I think they would have made a remake (like Power Rangers) instead of dubbing that. No, your not the only one who perfers subs, but like I said, this isn't a subs vs dubs debate.

I'm kind of hypocritical when it comes to this. Actually, I think most fans are like this, really. We want dubs (and subs, really) to keep the 'foreign' quality of original show - because that's what we like about it, at least in part. The most obvious element of this would be to retain the various honorifics... and yet, we get all pissy when certain individuals try to use a similar type of mangled Japanese/English hybrid. Of course, they usually go a little overboard with it all... Sorce I'm only stating that ifI have choice between a well-done sub, and a well-done dub, I will choose the dub. Agreed.

Hmm, I don't mind dubs so long as their well-done. That way I can watch anime series I like with my mom. I usually watch subs when I'm alone, with a few exceptions.

Dubs are nice if you wanna pay more attention to the pretty pictures ( xd ), and not worry about keeping up with the dialogue as it pops up onscreen. I've heard a lot of people say that Paku Romi was better as Ed, but... ehh, I don't think so. Ed's voice is too high in the Japanese version, IMO, for a 15 year old teenager.

I've heard that the companies/voice actors ask the Japanese studios/ actors their opinions on what they'd like to see.
I'm not actually sure about that one.
Anime being made into English/ licensing/dubbing in English is pretty good for marketing purposes and those of us who can't get things.. r.. yah.
I don't have cable and my parents don't exactly support my love for anime (in fact I think they abhorr it) so I can't buy lots of merchandise/DVDs. All I got is the TV and it's a good thing when companies bring stuff over.

If they are old enough to read the are old enough to read subtitles rolleyes In some countries, they don't exactly dub shows or subtitle them; in Vietnam, they play the orginal voices in the background with a dub over top, much like they do for documentaries in America. I'm just letting you know there is more than two options. And no, I wouldn't. I don't watch French films in English, why should Japanese cartoons get special privilages.
