I had recently gotten into jazz and I wanted to know if anyone had some advice on how the basic jazz drumming is played and maybe some Jazz Drummers I should listen to. I've been listening to drummers like Budy Rich, Gene Krupa, and Lionel Hampton.

Depends on what jazz drumming you mean?
Do you mean a simple swing beat or something else?
A drummer you should listen to is Tony Williams when he played with Herbie Hancock in his Be-Bop.

Max Roach is very fun to listen to. He's probably my favorite drummer.

I just remembered a story my drummer friend told me about Art Blakey. According to my friend, he started off as a pianist. He was okay, but he couldn't read music well. When he got a gig at a club that run by a mob boss, he couldn't keep up reading with the band. The drummer there actually could play piano pretty well, and could sight read without too much trouble. The club owner said that the drummer would play piano, and told Art to go play the drums. Art said, "I don't know how to play drums," so the owner pulled out a handgun and said, "Do you want to live?"
I have no idea if this is true or not, but it is a fun story. Maybe I'm thinking of a differen't drummer, if it isn't true.

Still, think about what the world of jazz would be like if Art was just a mediocre piano player his whole life.

king_of_the_wind I had recently gotten into jazz and I wanted to know if anyone had some advice on how the basic jazz drumming is played and maybe some Jazz Drummers I should listen to. I've been listening to drummers like Budy Rich, Gene Krupa, and Lionel Hampton. Those drummers are from the Big Band Era. I'd suggest you listen to guys like Jack Dejohnette, Peter Erskine, Brain Blade, Elvin Jones, Tony Williams. Thos are guys who played with the smaller ensembles. I have to go for supper. Just pass me a PM and I'll try to help you out more. I'm a Jazz Drummer at my University so I can actually help you out ^_^
