I think Gary Oldman is perfect for Sirius. If you look at him in films like State of Grace, he looks very much like how I imagined "young" Sirius to look (except he needs black hair.) Gary Oldman is hot, hot, hot anyway so it works out great.
I didn't have as defined an image of Professor Lupin in my head. When I read POA, I could get a very good feel of what he'd be like as a person, but found it hard to imagine him physically. David Thewlis filled that gap for me very nicely. I was already aware of him from films like "Divorcing Jack" (he's great in that one) and The Island of Dr. Moreau (he was the only good thing in it) and always found him to be incredibly attractive. His eyes are lovely. I don't know, maybe I just have a thing for British guys about 15-20 years older than me, I don't know smile Hotness factor aside, I think he captured Lupin's personality as well.
It's funny. When I read fan fiction now, or write it, I always imagine sort of "idealized" versions of the actors from the films playing the roles. I don't mean in the sense of "Well, here I'll make Gary Oldman make out with David Thewlis" but rather "Here, Sirius (who looks kind of Gary Oldman-ish) will give Remus (who looks sort of like David Thewlis) a ring."
Anybody else had that kind of blurred line between the books and the movies occur?

I wasn't exactly fond of David Thewlis as Remus. I had a very specific look for his character in my head before seeing the films and it didn't look a thing like him. ^^ I also think part of it was that I'd seen David Thewlis in Dragon Heart and he just creeped me out to no end in that movie. That didn't help when I realized it was the same person. lol I'm not too fond of the way they wrote Remus, either; to me he seemed a bit too harsh on occasion, but he also hit the character perfectly with a few lines and scenes...so, I dealt.
Gary Oldman, on the other hand, wasn't that bad. Still not at all how I pictured Sirius, but he's fits the part well and he's a good actor so I dealt with it. I guess I pictured Sirius with much longer hair for one thing and larger and maybe a bit...more graceful (for lack of a better term) facial features, even after a 13 year stay in Azkaban. That's just me, however.
As for the other casting in general, I think they did a fair job. I like most of the older actors and actresses working on the films, such as Maggie Smith, Robbie Coltrane, and Julie Walters, and I think they fit their parts magnificently. I am one of the Richard Harris fans and I think he was absolutely perfect as Dumbledore. I do not like Michael Gambon at all. In general, though, the casting for the films was nicely done. ^^

I don't think any of the characters actually look like their movie counterparts, except for Robbie Coltran as Hagrid and Richard Harris as Dumbledore and that kid that played Wood and the guy that played Cedric. Other than that, I don't think any of the actors really look like how I pictures them. Of course, I hate the WB for destroying the fandom in the first place, so...whatever.
Also, I'm going to move this into the General HP subforum in a few minutes. It's better placed there.

*laughs madly, stops and coughs* Sorry, sorry.
As the official Sirius for this Guild, a handful of others, and I think I'm pretty much the Sirius of the HP Subforums, I can honestly say that Oldman is not Sirius Black.
Perhaps a few years a go he would've made a wonderful young Sirius, but he's frankly a terrible Post-Azkaban Sirius. And the WB knew that while casting for the 5th movie. Unfortunatly, it's too late for them to change know which is why they signed him on for it.
He doesn't fit the part, it's bad enough they butchered the third movie, but they could've at least given us decent actors to deal with!
Not saying that Oldman isn't a good actor, he is, but he is not Sirius Black.
Thewlis also wasn't the best choice, but I prefer him over Oldman. They could've gotten rid of the catepillar--I mean mustache and it would've been better, and shot the angles differently so he didn't look so tall. I've gotten from the books that Sirius was taller. He's a good actor, and he's a much better Remus than Oldman is Sirius, but not the best choice by a long shot.
As for other characters, other than Emma *resists urge to shoot her* I find most of the actor choices to be dead on. I wish the man who originally started out as Dumbledore *forgot his name* was a bit younger when they started out and didn't die, but such is life. The new guy...needs to calm down a bit, but he does have the stuff to be the fun cheery Dumbledore we all know...and at least like. Though it'll be a bit more difficult killing him off for the 6th movie, the other guy would've been better in that role.
Emma is given way too much freedom, especially in the third movie, in the first and second she was good, but she was young. Now they've given her freedoms. Luckily they toned her down a bit in the 4th, but what they don't seem to realize is Hermione isn't firey and dangerous and extremely pretty. She punches Malfoy, calms down and shoves her nose in a book. She arrives at the Yule Ball looking like she's from heaven, calms down, shoves her nose in a book. If they put in spew, then they could've let her be passionate about that, but they didn't (thank God) and instead let her take Hermione in her own hands. Hermione isn't really forceful at all until the 6th book so they jumped the gun and thus ruined the character.
Other than that, they need to be a bit more strict with Dan and his contacts and scar (make up department's fault) but *shrugs* I don't really care after that.
I love Robbie Coltran as Hagrid, he just fits.

I had a completely different picture of both characters in my head, especially for Sirius. I really disliked the casting in that sense.
Has anybody been able to find a picture of James Utechin, the actor playing Young Remus? There are plenty of Young Sirius roaming about, for which I'm reserving judgement on until I see how they change him for the movie, but I'd like a preview of our darling Moony before July, if possible.

One thing about the adult casting........they are all too old. Except for David Thewlis, who I think is in his early 40's, the rest are much older than the characters would have been in the book (Snape would have been about 35 or 36 in book one.) Harry's parents had him at quite a young age.
