Where does magic come from and how does it work?
Lets see how many variations can be driven from this idea.
A wizard gains his power by drinking a kind of tea maid from the skin of a frog. This has to be repeated every time that the wizard wants to cast a spell. However there is something in the skin of the frogs that works like a narcotic so it is possible to become addicted to magic, go insane from the side affects. (Like hallucinations.)

I won't post my real belief, just because, but I'll post something random.
"When the first hunter brought down a unicorn, he was fascinated by the horn. he cut it off and brought it home, completely forgetting about his kill. His wife, knowing somehow that her husband had destroyed something great, stole the horn and ran away. She found the unicorn, and knelt by it, weeping. Grasping the horn to her heart, she whispered a wish: a wish for the beast to live again. The horn flared up blinding white, searing her hands for a moment, and the unicorn stood, hornless, but alive. The woman gaped, amazed and entranced. The Unicorn nodded to her, and then ran off intot eh forest to become the first real horse. The woman realized that the horn would grant wishes, and the first magic was born."
Phew...that came out pretty cool. I love my creativity. ^_^

What you posted sounds more like the beginning of a story ^_^ that isn’t exactly what this sub-form is for, but it is exactly what it can lead to.
As for me I am Catholic and I am interested in world religions and mythology.
Ok so magic comes from Unicorns
The wizard steals the shadow of a unicorn and uses it to siphon off the unicorns powers and use them for himself. The only problem is that after the unicorn is drained of power the unicorn dies and the wizard has to find a new unicorn to draw power from.
((Please come up with a variation on this.))

Everyone has the ability to use magic, but in humans it's blocked. So those who want to be mages must climb to the top of the mountain where the dragons live. Then if you pass their test and they deem you worthy they will unblock your magic. But if you fail the test then the dragons get lunch.

When i say everyone i mean all humans could become mages, but only some choose to risk it. Ok that makes sents to me.

Most humans carry the magic gene but only in very few does it take hold and flourish. Once the gene has established itself the the magic user may take years to actually 'get the hang of magic' so to speak.

In my story, there is a clan of dragons who have figured out how to channel their energy through the large crystal in the end of their staff, thereby producing magic. this, of course, means that only the dragons can use magic.

The energy of a being is split into two parts -- one's magic and one's life force. It's genetic, and there are five categories.
On the far left of the spectrum lie those with no or very little magic, only/mostly life. They're emotionally hindered, as although they can communicate, there are none of the intangible bonds connecting them to others, and although they can live for very long times, their body cannot handle diseases, so they'll often die. They can take the magic from someone with less life force than they, so long as they're within half of the spectrum. They're commonly referred to as ghosts.
Next come humans. They have between 50 and 75 % life force, and can battle most diseases and handle the intangible bonds, but none of the power that comes with magic.
Next come witches, wizards, those sorts of people, who live with shorter life spans, as their life force is between 25 and 50 %. They don't generally live past the age of thirty, and they are prone to injury although they seldom get sick. They can bend the power of their magic force and do things with it, depending on its strength.
Lastly are those with almost entirely magic. In order to live, they have to take the life force from others. Successfully, this can keep them alive for centuries, but without it they would wither and die within a range of five years to a week, depending on how low their life force is. They can do nearly anything with their magic, but if they haven't drained enough life force they can die from something as small as a three inch gash down their leg. Commonly know as vampires.
Finally, those with perfect 50 50 % balances. They are the most suitable to surviving, but since life or magic can only be drained within 50% of the spectrum, they are attacked and drained by the strongest of both, kept as sheep by the very strongest, those with either 1 or 99 %.
Both life and magic forces will regenerate, but in proportion to how much of that force you have. i.e., a human at 80, 20% would have a life force that regenerates four times faster than their magic, and both of these are fairly slow, never going above the top level. Should all of either be drained, it will never regenerate, which is how many inadvertantly kill themselves.

Try this one:
Magic is the lifeblood of the planet, flowing through veins called ley lines.
Beings who are born to magic--like dragons, unicorns, mer, fae, etc.--are naturally attuned to those lines, use magic instinctively, and carry some of that magic in their flesh and bone.
Beings that are not naturally attuned--such as humans and demons--have to find artificial methods of accessing, storing, and using magic, such as a unicorn's horn, dragon's blood, etc.
Every once in a great while, a human is born with a tenous connection to magic--usually one with some non-human ancestry. With effort and concentration, such humans can learn to use magic themselves. Such magic is easier with tools created from the natural "flesh and bone" of the planet, such as crystals, salt, herbs, etc.

ladyjewell SatanBarbie The energy of a being is split into two parts -- one's magic and one's life force. It's genetic, and there are five categories... Sounds way complicated to keep track of, especially in a complex storyline. I disagree. I think it's a fairly solid system. Especially since it's divided into percentages. How about this... 'Magic' effects are achieved through the manipulation of extra dimensions, spacial and otherwise. By dimensions, mind you, I don't mean alternate worlds, I mean physics-type dimensions... you know, X, Y, etc. Of course to manipulate these dimensions through sheer force of will requires a deep understanding of the nature of the universe, requiring years of intense study and an apprenticeship under someone who can already do so. Only those with the rare savant genius gift can hope to produce magical effects with any ease.
