The Room of Ego & Id
Taro's room was messy to say the least, but he had made sure that the annexing room he was devoting to Ego and Id was clean, orderly and pleasing to the eye. There was a small bunk bed set up in the centre of the room, both beds raised with space underneath for a chest full of toys. Shelves lining the walls were msotly empty, as Taro didn't know what these little Furies would like. A few of Taro's childhood favourites sat upon the shelfs, a little careworn, but still classics.
A small terrycloth rabbit of blue, pink, yellow and green pastel colours and glassy black eyes.
A worn copy of Pierre Burton's
Secret World of Og.
A banged-up Rubik's Cube.
A 1000-piece puzzle that when assembled depicted a lion and a lamb and numerous other creatures that shouldn't appear together in a painting.
A cloth-bound box filled with crayons and other art supplies including a glue stick, a pair of safety scissors, some sparkles, a few stickers and some odd bits of ribbon.
And last but not least a large stack of paper, all kinds: construction paper of purples, blues, greens, browns, yellows, reds, blacks, creams, and oranges; a hefty stack of manilla paper; some thin sheets of blank newsprint; a package of blank computer paper; and even some wrapping paper carefully removed from presents years before that was saved for their delightful patterns and folded carefully along with all the others.
For now these things were untouched and unwanted. The rack sat carefully on the shelf alongside the stuffed rabbit and perpendicular to the window. Taro didn't want the glass to get too much sun and heat up the poor liquids inside. He hoped the shelf above the vials would be enough protection to make sure nothing fell into the vessels while they grew.
Everyday, Taro vowed, he would check on them. He was hoping he would catch them in mid-transformation into eggs. He wondered how big the eggs would be, and what they would look like and how well they would fly on their little wings.
For now, he talked to them, and occassionally they'd burble back and give him cause to smile and be excited.
Now, to wait...
