We all know about Sirius' family and have a pretty good idea of his childhood. Plus, we also know exacly what he was doing while Harry was growing up.
But Remus, what do we know about him? Not a whole damn lot. His father pissed off Fenrir and he was bitten around teh time he was 6 because of that. (I think I got that right.)
So any knowledge, speculation, or downright lies you have about the life and times of Remus John Lupin, post here. I'll be sure to give my own ideas soon. 3nodding

Pure fanon fodder, but well...with JoK not telling us anything about him does make it easy to give him a background. Of course, even with all of the information we have about Sirius, I still came up with a handful of things. I put a list in my journal of fanon that I had come up with, but I'll pull out the things that I have about Remus' family and past.
-Remus' mother is a muggle and she loathes magic to the point of threatening to keep Remus from going back to that school every summer. At the same time, she lets him go because she knows it makes him happy.
-Remus' father blames his son's condition on himself completely and he stopped using magic. Remus has never mentioned magic in their presence.
-Remus used to babysit Nymphadora Tonks because the Tonks lived about ten miles from his parent's home in Liverpool.
-The Lupins are Jewish.
-The Lupins were once a well to do pureblood family, but John's marriage to a muggle and then the spending of his fortune in the hopes of curing his son left them in a similar state as the Weasleys.
Eh, nothing really special...but it's something I suppose.

I agree as well. It's a different view to what I've read so many times.

I realized a bit ago (as in about three days ago) that while Remus says his parents were supportive, his father still did something that pissed Fenrir off. I think he may have been a big voice in anti-werewolf legislation (think like Pat Robertson going on about 9/11 and how it was the gays and gods punishment and all of that bullshit) and Fenrir got pissed.
It adds a whole new level to the family relationship and really...I guess I just see his father having to literally rebuild his own beliefs and still struggling against his feelings. If I were a better writer, I would try to write something about it...maybe.

I like Moony's views on this. It makes the most sense, but so do other people's. Me? I never really thought of Moony's past - before Hogwarts. Dunno why.

Transvesticade Me? I never really thought of Moony's past - before Hogwarts. Dunno why. The same goes for me. I haven't thought much about his past. The few times I did was usually after a fanfic I'd read and that went about as far as me wondering if I liked the way they portrayed his past. Some things that I've read and liked were things like Remus being able to speak French from his ancestors...the language being passed on from somewhere in his family (it isn't particularly that I think he is distinctly French..I just kind of like the idea of Remus speaking another language fluently. It seems to fit his character), having a mother that was the ultimate mother woman type, but the strain of Remus's condition still showing clearly in her actions toward him...worrying over him, premature aging, etc, same with his father. I usually imagine his dad being a wizard with a love for muggle literature...go figure. I flip back and forth between the his mother's a witch/his mother's a muggle idea. They're usually an average middle class family, as well. They don't spend a lot because they don't have a lot, but what they have is what they need to live comfortably. I think, overall, I'm fairly open to anything about Remus's past.

I think Remus's past will end up being very important. Just who is his father, and what did he do to piss off Fenrir? And where is his family now? We know that Sirius's family is all dead, but we never hear anything of Lupin's.
Personally, I always imagined poor Remus must have grown up rather poor, since he's obviously got no money (his parents either aren't helping him in any way, or are dead and left him nothing) and I suspect that might have been the case his whole life.

theyre all good theories and now ive just sort of pieced a couple together in my head to give myself the bare bones of remus's background. yeah the french theory kinda suits me but i really like the idea of his family being jewish(though the two clash) it just sems right. since hes so prim and proper and well put together the jewish faith seems ideal for his family, hence the stern upbringing. my guess(based on everyones theories) is that he grew up in a troubled household where budgets were tight(since his well to do father exhausted their funds on possible cures for his lycanthropy)and no one particularly cared to speak about the elephant in the room. i theorize that his parents helped him best they could but their relationship with their son was always sort of strained because of the unpredictability of his state. they did everything they could for him(i suppose) scrimping and saving to at lest make him comfortable in his own home. and my guess is that as he got older his guilt for being bitten and causing strain on the family grew until it was unberable. it was probly then that he struck out on his own and accepted nary a cent from his parents, convinced that if he was out in the wizarding world on his own he could cause them no more greif. thats just my litttle theory...make up whatever you want and consider whatever suits you the truth
