I told one of my fellow Yuugiou fans that I was wanting to write a fanfiction revolving around the relationship between Yuugi and Anzu. She said that it seemed a bold endeavor for fanfiction since the pairing didn't appear to be popular. It got me to thinking after that about who she would be best suited for.

So do you think that Anzu should be with Yuugi or Atemu? Or do you see her with someone entirely different?

Herm, this one is a toughie.

First off, I'm not going to claim to like Anzu, I've tried but I just can't do it. But I'm going to do my best to give you a totally unbiased opinion.

The first most obvious thing to consider is that Yuugi, although it's predominantly in the first season, has a crush on Anzu. It's actually a canon situation in that regard. And although Yami does tend to show some feelings for her very early on in the story, as he becomes less a part of Yuugi and more his own person, those feelings seem to go away and he considers her just a good friend from that point. So, looking at it from the Yuugi or Yami standpoint, I'd say Yuugi is the obvious better choice.

The problem with this is Anzu. Often times, she seems to deliberately ignore Yuugi with the hope that she might get a chance to see Yami("The man with the voice" ^^; ) instead. Considering that she's known Yuugi since they were children, and well he's pretty obvious about his crush, it's probably no secret to her that he has feelings for her. I always thought it was rather hurtful of her to just openly disregard Yuugi's feelings like that...

And although the romance is less present after the first season, it's easy enough to tell that her feelings for Yami remain. At the same time, however, she stops shunning Yuugi away. She seems to realize that although there are "two Yuugis" in reality they are different people, and each holds an equally important part in her life, though for different reasons. Also, by the time the series is coming to close, Yuugi has matured a lot from the time before he solved the sennen puzzle, and has acquire a lot of those more courageous qualities that Anzu originally fell in love with Yami for.

And of course the fact still remains that throughout the series Yami never shows any romantic interest in anyone.

So I personally, see her working with Yuugi better that Yami. I think the reason your friend sees it as unpopular is that the rabid Anzu bashers of the fandom have made her out to be a bad person that never does anything but hurt Yuugi, which isn't true. I hope that helped a bit, sorry if I ranted. sweatdrop

Yeah, I think the reason she seemed surprise is due to all the Anzu bashers in fanfiction. Personally I really like her. In fact, I have a difficult choice deciding whether I like her or Bakura more in the series... so I take the easy way out and just say that Anzu is my favorite girl and Bakura is my favorite boy! xd

Ohkami, I see many good points in your post. I too thought that it seemed kind of hurtful that Anzu could ignore Yugi's feelings like that at times. Even to get Yami to come out she put herself in a dangerous situation, but I could kind of understand why she would go to such lengths. When you are in love with someone, or at least think that you are, you will do whatever is necessary to see them. Until then she had only seen Yami when she was in danger.

The Doom arc seems to show that she is caring more for Yugi. Toward the end when Yugi is ready to duel she stops him to say something. He asks her if she wanted to wish the Pharaoh luck, but Anzu said that she wanted to wish Yugi luck. I think that's how it went, right?

Perhaps she also was a little afraid to admit her feelings before. Even reading the manga, Anzu never did strike me as a typical girl that spends much time thinking about romance as other female anime characters seem to do.

Um...since when is Anzu not romanticly interested in Yami. You guys, seriously go to the book store RIGHT NOW and buy the original yuugiou manga vol. 5 by shonen jump. Duel 45. Anzu-chan goes to the fair with Yuugi. "I can't believe it!" yuugi thinks, "Anzu-chan asked me out! could this mean..." Basically, the whole episode is about how Anzu is doing dangerous things to get 'mou hitori no yuugi' to come out. Now friends, let us observe Duel 41 from manga 5.

Anzu: "Ah! wh-what am I thinking? I was thinking about yuugi again...
no...not him...the other yuugi..."

Anzu-chan gives yuugi a love detector, and Anzu and yuugi test each other on the way to school..zip. nadda. nothin. Yuugi is apropriately depressed

When a teacher makes fun of yuugi's pore grades, yami challenges him to a game. The teacher hides the love detector. Yami must find it within the hour. So, after looking around for about 45 minutes, Anzu gives him her love detector hoping it will help somehow. Yami needs to use it to prove that the love tester is hidden on the teacher body. He presses anzu's detector and...

It beeps!

So, my suggestion is, write a fan-fiction about how yuugi loves Anzu, but Anzu loves Yami, but Yami and Yuugi are in the same body!

I know my post was confusing. I meant that Atemu saw Anzu as a friend, nothing more. I'm well aware she is in love with him, as I stated. But no harm done. Everyone makes mistakes and all. I tend to make confusing posts half the time... But it's all good.
