Ancient Greeks believed in a great power in music. They saw music in everything, from the traveling bard to the stars in the sky. The great sense of harmony in the universe, they attributed to a sort of music.
They had three classifications.
Musica Instrumentalis- This was the lowest kind. The man who plays his instrument for the shear purpose of entertain is a slave to harmonies he doesn't understand.
Musica Humana This is the harmony of human reason. The Greeks found musica humana in the sciences and arts, from geometry to literature. A musician who knows how to write music is among the great thinkers of the era.
Musica Mundana The highest form of harmony and music. This is the natural law and order that govern and bind the universe. Only a musician who understands the full implications and delicacies of his craft can call himself a musician mundana. He is at one with the world.
Imho, the Greeks would consider great Jazz virtuosos as Musician Mundana.

I've never heard of that. It's really neat. I quite like the idea, for the most part.

That is a very interesting theory. Historians believe that Ancient races, such as the Greeks and the Romans, were much more sophisticated than most people could ever imagine. It's really quite amazing stuff if you ask me.

They did some really backwards stuff, like drink pee. Still, if Rome never fell, the world would be several centuries ahead.

Ash Rail They did some really backwards stuff, like drink pee. Still, if Rome never fell, the world would be several centuries ahead. Two things, one of these will probably gross you out. 1. Some scientists, I've read about just recently, say that apparently, get this, that your urine is nutrients that weren't absorbed by your body in the first place. According to them, if you drink it....well..... you digest the nutrients..... 2. You're probably right, as I said earlier, the Romans were more advanced than most people at the time.

Isn't there ammonia in pee though? It's got toxins in it.

Ash Rail Isn't there ammonia in pee though? It's got toxins in it. You'd be thinking that wouldn't you? According to these scientists, the digestive juices in your stomach get rid of the toxins. Anyway, perhaps the Romans weren't all that backward.......

People drank pee all over the ancient world. I think the Mayans did that too.
