I'm in a daze right now. Yesterday, I met my absolute favorite choral music composer in person!!!! (That, to me, is the equivelent of meeting someone from Hollywood or something like that.)
We went over to Newberg yesterday (an almost 2 hour bus ride) to work with Mr. Whitacre at George Fox University (one of the colleges I'm considering going to after I graduate). I had no idea what to expect. I thought he was going to be reall, really stern and get all frustrated if we messed up his music....
Boy, was I WRONG.
Eric Whitacre is the sweetest and funniest guy ever! When we first went up there to sing Water Night (in my opinion, one of the best music pieces he's composed, besides Cloudburst and Sleep), I all of a sudden got really nervous. I was shaking all over, I forgot the places I had to breathe and pause and all that stuff that's second nature to me now just went out the window. He was sitting in the front row while we performed it for him. He said he was impressed after we were done. (In my mind I was going, "Really? I can think of a dozen things we screwed up on.")
Our director went to sit on the piano bench and Mr. Whitacre took over. The way he explained things to us was amazing. I had never thought of singing it or thinking of that song the way he described it. He's such a wonderful musician! And really funny, too. He had SO many stories to tell. I never once got bored during that workshop. Even during the other choirs. We even got to sit down and ask him questions (like how he got started, you know. That kind of stuff). I think the wierdest question asked was: "Boxers or Briefs?". Oh my.
And after the workshop was over, I wanted to learn so much more. I really wish it had been a two-day workshop and then the concert on the second day.
After the workshop was dinner (italian food. YUM.), and then we had about three hours to ourselves before the conert. Our choir just socialized. We even got a massage chain going in our break room. (That felt really nice.) And then a bunch of us just conked out on the floor. (seriously. We used choir robes as blankets and fell asleep right there on the floor). I woke up at about 8:00pm, and went to get ready for the concert.
It was only supposed to be 45 minutes at the most (our director said). Well, it ended up going from 7:30 to 10:00. Not that I minded, of course. I enjoyed every minute of yesterday. And during the mass number, when the wind ensemble and all of us sang, it was so BEAUTIFUL. Some of the girls were crying (yes, Mr. Whitacre's music is THAT good).
So, anyway, I didn't get home until almost 1:00am. I was soooooo tired, but I have lots of stuff to remember yesterday. *sighs*
I am SUCH a choir nerd. (But proud of it.)

(In case you guys wanted to hear some of the choral music he's composed. I recommend going and listening to it. Especially Sleep or Water Night.)
