Alekto, now considering herself an obligated sort of supernatural animal control officer, sat on the edge of a building - what was the point in being a magical superhero if you couldn't hang out on roofs, all cool-like? - and swung her feet to and fro, a girlish and cheerful mannerism entirely at odds with her appearance.

She was eating a lukewarm McChicken, unimpressed with the thermal insulation abilities of subspace, and listening for the sound of distant howling. All she was hearing, however, was yapping, and while there probably were ankle-biting youma in existence - or worse - she had not yet encountered them, and was somewhat comfortable filing the noise away as "regular annoying dog." Probably one of those fluffy white ones with tear stains, in this neighborhood.

"Hello," she called out in no particular direction, aware of an approaching energy signature. She was still learning how to feel out their type and size and angle of approach, and could only categorize them as friendly, and therefore felt it would behoove her to extend an early greeting just in case they were in fact about to show down with an ice wolf - or a lava-based Yorkie, or something. "I have an extra apple pie," she added.

Xibalba had taken to patrolling the snowy nights, carefully armed. Just in case of wolves. Thus far tonight, there hadn't been even a single mournful howl to disturb the peace. Which was all to the good as far as he was concerned. He had no desire to accumulate more scars, after all. It had been hard enough explaining to the twins why Mum and Da had nigh matching snake scars. He really didn't feel up to explaining how magic wolves were attacking the city and he'd been forced to end them.

That was how horrified tantrums began.

As it stood, he was enjoying the snow tonight. He'd even picked up on an energy signature and had adjusted his course accordingly. What he hadn't expected was a familiar sounding voice offering him a spare apple pie. Grinning a little, he paused and scanned the area, including up, and saw a dark form on the rooftops.

"Ah'm nae much for pies, thanks! Have ye been brushing up on your geography?"

She was grateful for the veil, which allowed her to conceal her expression of disappointment that the stranger was someone she knew, and hadn't exactly left on the best of terms with. Still, he seemed less miffed than last time - if still holding it over her head a bit - and she decided to fib a little.

"Yes," she said loftily. "But not my dialects."

She was aware that she herself had blamed the mix-up on an ignorance of geography and not linguistics. She was hoping he'd forgotten.

Looking for amused than anything else, Xibalba remained quiet, letting the girl have her way for now. Her delusions were only hurting herself, after all.

"Go t'hear," he rumbled before taking a step back to examine possible pathways up to the rooftop. After a moment, he chose a fire escape and began climbing up. If they were going to pass the time, it would not be whilst she was perched above him like the goddamned Batman!

After a few breaths, he was settling in close to her without intruding too much on her space. "So, dialects, hmm?" he asked, tone amused and interested. "A tricky subject, that. I'll be kind and nae make you guess where m'fambly held lands. But if Ah hear any cracks about Nessie, I may thump your wee noggin, y'ken?"

Not that he really would. At least he'd find a rolled up newspaper and give her a gentle pap. But it was always good to let people know that some jokes weren't considered good taste.

She lifted up the veil in one hand, a dainty gesture to accommodate one very un-dainty bite of her sandwich.

"To do that," she retorted cheerfully, "I'd have to know that Nessy is Scottish, or whatever. I only know about Champ, so unless you're from Michigan, you're safe."

Champ did not live in Michigan. Champ lived in Vermont.

"You seen any dogs around?"

Raising an eyebrow, Xibalba cleared his throat as delicately as a burly Scot could and said, quite mildly, "Sounds tae me like y'know where Nessie resides, lass. And, ah, Champ is a Vermonter." He sounded almost apologetic for correcting her. Almost. But really, he was trying very hard to not laugh in her confidently wrong face. He was getting an idea of who she was and he didn't think that she was trying to purposely antagonize.

She was just a wee numpty.

Fortunately, she'd already provided a new subject to talk about and he was happy enough to latch on to it. "Wolves, lass, wolves. Nae dogs. And Ah have, but not tonight. Ah think they tend to prefer slightly more open spaces."

"Wolves are dogs," she stubbornly repeated.

She then, in the way of dumb people, manifested surprising capacity for knowledge in one very specific topic. "Canis lupus familiaris. The lupus is for wolf. We can't even, like, agree on what speciation actually is with any kind of certainty - like, definition, I mean; where the cutoff is - and a dog is just a neotonous wolf, or like, close enough. Anyway, I'm glad there's no dogs around. I ran into another one and they're gross and I didn't even have a shopping cart to hit it with this time."

She crammed the rest of the sandwich - a full quarter of it, probably - into her mouth and let the veil fall back, answering around a mouthful.

"Do you think they'll go away when the snow melts? I hope so."

Blinking a little, the Mars knight realized that he'd just been taught something and inclined his head respectfully. He knew better than to argue when the Latin terminology was whipped out. Besides, anyone who could cram that much sandwich in on one bite was probably not someone that he really wanted to get into semantics with.

So, he gracefully switched tack and seized onto the new topic. He was beginning to sense a pattern.

"Ah've had t'use sticks, rocks and m'fists," he said quietly. He hadn't enjoyed any of it at all. If the damned magic critters would just leave people alone... "Ah don' know that Ah'd call them gross," he said, voice thoughtful. "Though Ah suppose that odd blood o'theirs is a bit gross."

Then, rather than directly answer her question, he sighed and tossed out a question of his own. "How long have y'lived in Destiny City, lass? If this isn't your first winter, have y'nae noticed odd things happenin' throughout the year?"

If she'd been around, she'd realize that those other oddities had gone away and thus, logically, the wolves would too. Probably once winter ended.

"My whole life," she said, managing at last to swallow, and then procuring an apple pie from subspace before tucking into it as well, her feet still swinging gently back and forth. "But up until Halloween I wasn't one of the odd things happening."

Which made sense: things did have a tendency to be drawn - or at least it seemed so - to the magically-inclined. Perhaps, for Alekto, all those things had happened on the periphery of a blessed, swaddled life - something to be briefly noted and aware of while happening to other people.

"And I didn't go anywhere when Halloween was over. I thought I might, though. I sorta thought - you know - maybe I dreamed all this. Like, maybe my drink got spiked and I was just remembering tripping balls, and not a talking cat and a cursed Jumanji game and stuff. But then I kept happening."

"Y've been lucky then," he replied bluntly. "So much weird ********' s**t happens in this town. Someday, Ah might be willin' t'tell ye about the ********' chickens." Something in his voice indicated that the chickens were a source of both utter confoundment and distaste. "M'point bein' the wolves'll go away eventually. Jes' about every odd thing does."

He nodded as she talked, understanding the sentiment. It really was odd at first, though he couldn't speak about the cats. "Be glad f'r the cats, lass. Knights like me either get a ghost or pure guesswork t'go on. It's a blessed pain in the arse!"

The guesswork paled compared to the silly weapon he'd been obliged to start out with. At least baby senshi had access to some magic. "Ah s'pose that suddenly havin' magic would seem fantastical," he rumbled. Ah'd nae want to encounter the drink that could induce that sort o'thing."

"It was wild," she said in fervent agreement, dispatching the pie with alacrity as he talked. "This girl in a maid costume knocked me the ******** out somehow and when I came to a cat was bothering me about not being a loser, so I tracked her down and pointed at her and she just started screaming. I didn't even touch her."

This, with a bit of a puff of pride.

"And I guess I'm grateful for the cat versus, like. Nothing. But I'd probably be more grateful if the cat wasn't so crazy. I'd barely been awake at all and she dragged me off to some ******** - fish b***h's planet in the stars and made me fight a giant fungal whale skeleton and I died and it was ******** terrible. I'm never doing anything she tells me to do again."

This was a lie. Alekto was a natural pushover. But she thought she meant it, when she said it.

"Do you have a ghost? I think it'd be pretty ******** cool to talk to a ghost."
PostPosted: Sat Jan 03, 2026 5:35 pm

"In m'own experience," Xibalba quipped, "most o'the cats are crazy. They'd have t'be t'make it through all this mess without going bad crazy." He had no words for everything else the girl said. To him, it sounded like the ravings of a loon. Though he knew that she was only telling literal truth, perhaps a bit disjointedly.

It was fair easier to answer her question. "Ah, Ah'm afraid not. Ah'm more of a return ticket situation. But Ah've met an Earth knight who had a ghost in tow."

"

She made a face, perceptible despite the veil. "Damn. I thought you were gonna tell me about hanging out with Samara or something. Like you watched a cursed VHS tape and got turned into a Knight or something."

She paused, kicking her heels gently against the building and leaning on her palms now that the pie was gone. She looked very young - childish might be the word - despite clearly being north of twenty. "I really like scary movies," she said confidingly. "Like, a lot. And I thought I'd be doing a lot more - I don't know - maybe if not Samara then some Art the Clown type stuff, you know? Killing him, I mean, not being him. But I think I'm pretty relieved that it's not all that. I'm pretty relieved I don't have to be Sidney all the time or deal with ghosts all the time or whatever. But it does kinda make me feel like I'm supposed to be doing more, but I don't even really know how. I'm not sure I wanna know how," she added, still more confidingly than before, as if confessing a sin. "But I guess I'll find out either way."

As he listened, Xibalba became increasingly aware that he really had no idea who or what the senshi was talking about. Was he getting old? Or was it just being a father of young kids? Who could say. At least he could infer that all these names belonged to stuff out of horror movies. And her uniform certainly looked horror-ish.

"Y'the senshi of horror, then?" he asked bluntly. "It would fit th' aesthetic." Waving his hand vaguely to encompass her whole look, he tried to guess what else she could be if it wasn't horror. Besides, they were having an actual conversation now. It felt rude to not know a blessed thing about her other than the fact she was a bit dim. Then, because she'd opened another conversational door, he added, "Ye survive, lass. Ye do what y'can, do your best t'avoid corruption an' ye survive. An' in the quiet places in b'tween, y'live your life and do your best to make it good."

"Already doing a lot of that," she said, "or at least trying to. I guess most of us are - trying to make it good, I mean." She sighed, her feet coming to a stop and dangling, and she exhaled a little puff of air that made the veil flutter.

"Screams," she added, belatedly, and then: "Oh. Did we ever introduce each other? I guess we were kinda busy." She put out a hand, then. "Alekto. I just stopped to eat, too, so I should probably get a move on. I hope you don't run into any more scary dogs. Or wolves or whatever. And that you make it good in the between parts."
