http://the-magicbox.com/game20060322.shtml Quote: - Rumor from Japan stated that Yuji Naka is planning to leave Sega and setup his own development studio. Yuji Naka is the head of Sonic Team, his works include Sonic the Hedgehog, Phantasy Star Online and NiGHTs. Found this one day while browsing the Magic Box. Not sure if there's any truth to this rumor, though... Anyone else heard any more on this? And any clues as to how this may effect the Sonic series as a whole?

I've heard the rumours echoed elsewhere, in other forums. Some are questioning whether it'll make a difference, since it's been a while since he was actively involved in developing a new Sonic game anyway.
Me, I've no idea. The latest games I've been paying attention to the theme music and the background CGI rather than the credits smile

Yuji's leaving Sega, eh? That's interesting.......well, since Sonic is HIS creation, after all, wouldn't it make sense that his creation leaves with him? Maybe this new studio will make its own Sonic games.......hm. I guess only time will tell.

I imagine Sega took great care that that could not happen when they hired Yuji Naka - after all, Sonic was their mascot. They couldn't have anyone taking him away... DW

I wonder if this will have any effect on Sonic Team, now (if this is more than a rumor, that is). I mean, if Yuji were to take Sonic, could one imagine a Sonic Team without Sonic? oo;

I should imagine that any and all creative copyright would be signed over to Sega as part of their employees' contract. I don't know an awful lot about copyright law outside the UK, though.

There are limits on that sort of thing in the UK, though. There's something called Restraint of Trade in contract law.

I'm not too worried. In all honesty I see it more as I can't picture Yugi without Sega. Let's remember, he jontly created Sonic, and Sonic games are created by a team of people. Yugi wouldn't leave Sega anyways, they could just crush his development studio with their power.

http://www.gamespot.com/news/6149373.html Well, we finally got confirmation of Naka's plans. He is indeed going off on his own......sort of. The way it's described, it just seems like he's starting up a new department within Sega. He'll still be required to let the company publish his works. So, guess we don't have to worry about Sonic tumbling into limbo. : p

What's most interesting is that he's taking 10 of his favourite Sonic Team employees with him.
I always rated Naka as the Stan Lee of Sega. He's a brand name, and one anyone will recognise, but these days they don't know what to do with him.
I'm happy to see him taking the initiative and moving on.
I suppose that's why we're getting NiGHTS Wii and PSP rumours. Without Naka there to stop them from cashing in on his precious brainchild, Sega can pimp it like their favourite hedgehog.
