The Gameboard

Destiny City is a large place, with a large population. It’s not uncommon to find a lost item here or there. Maybe a keychain, an earring, a book.

But, a six sided die? That’s different.

While traveling through Destiny City, you find a strange little object. It looks like old, stained wood, but something shiny in it catches your eye. How could you resist picking it up? But then, maybe you've found one of these dice before. Maybe you remember the Gameboard, already.

That's okay.

Even if you know better than to pick it up, all you have to do is look at it, and it's ensnared you. Again.

It looks like a normal die in terms of shape, and each side has a gilded number, one through six, carved into it. The most interesting part of it all is that the dice seems to be made of old, stained wood with fossilized opal throughout the whole piece. Something about it called to you, and now that it has your attention, a harsh wind slams into you. Darkness falls all around you–and then, slowly, a path illuminates. It’s black all around you; there’s no light, but you can see clearly marked spaces.

A line of squares unwind in front of you, each clearly marked.

You can’t see anything around you, can’t feel anything else–just the gameboard. And the die. Whether its in your hand or on the ground where you left it, it's there with you.

Even if you don’t recognize the game, you don’t really need instructions to know how to play–you have a die, and you have a path. In the distance, you can barely make out a dark wooden platform at the end of the path, but it seems to have the same fossilized opal inlay as the die–and pretty golden symbols along the rim.

You can’t step out of your square. Trying to leave the gameboard results in you walking to an invisible barrier and it feels like slamming into a glass wall. You cannot leave your space–unless the die says you can. If you want to get out of here, you’re going to have to roll your way there–but it isn’t so easy.

Strange gold markings differ from one square to the next. There’s no telling what they mean–you’re going to have to land on them to find out.

Though, judging by the tension in the air, it’s probably not going to be anything good.

What Kissling had originally thought had to be a piece of particularly pretty jewelry turned out, to his surprise, to be a six-sided die instead. He had been on patrol when he had come across the lovely flicker of color on the ground and stopped to inspect it. The opalescence of the fossilized opal inlay in the wood amazed him when he reached down to pick it up, admiring the colors.

Just then, though, a gust of wind seemed to blow out of nowhere to knock him over just as he touched the die. Before he knew what had happened, everything around him had turned too dark to be the black of night in Destiny City. At least in the city there were street lights, but when Kissling got knocked over, his sight got so dark that for a moment he thought he’d gone blind.

Space 0:
You have arrived here; nothing happens until you roll your die.

Scrambling to get up, the Dark Mirror Senshi frantically searched for signs of any other energy signatures nearby, thinking that maybe he might have been under attack. There was nothing and no one, however, deeply disconcerting him. He began to move, hoping to escape wherever he was, but he felt what seemed to be four glass walls surrounding him on all sides as if he was stuck in a box. Kissling tried to keep calm, though, and a few minutes later, his patience was rewarded with the appearance of twenty marked squares that lit up before him in the form of a winding path.

The revealed path didn’t seem to do much in terms of allowing Kissling more movement since the invisible walls surrounding him still seemed to be present when he tried to leave the square he was stuck on. It wasn’t until he tried to find something to potentially break through the walls with that he realized he had the die in his hand and it dawned on him that the path before him was reminiscent of a game board.

No way.

Was he actually supposed to roll his way out of this mess? Where did the path even lead?

Squinting, Kissling tried to peer ahead and was barely able to make out the glinting opalescent veins of color that had attracted him before – but instead of being in a die this time, they were part of a platform at the end of the path. Was that his goal, then?

He supposed there was only one way to find out.

Taking a deep breath, Kissling crouched down and rolled the die.

Space 5:
A dog barks, fierce and frightening. You can hear its growl and the hackles stand up on the back of your neck. You can practically feel spittle on you. It’s close. And it’s big. And it’s angry. If this beastly dog could reach you, no doubt it would try to tear you to shreds.

Uh oh.

Leiko had been chased by dogs before when he'd lived on the streets. It was terrifying not knowing what the animals might do to him if and when they caught up with him, which fueled his running with adrenaline. Usually, when he encountered a stray dog on the streets, he could simply parkour or freerun his way to safety, usually getting up somewhere higher like a fire escape or a rooftop. As there was nothing of the sort where he was just then, however, and no place for him to run because he was still stuck on the fifth square, there was only one other thing to do.

Reaching down to pick up his die, he quickly rolled it in the hopes it would allow him to escape to a new square.
