The Gameboard

Destiny City is a large place, with a large population. It’s not uncommon to find a lost item here or there. Maybe a keychain, an earring, a book.

But, a six sided die? That’s different.

While traveling through Destiny City, you find a strange little object. It looks like old, stained wood, but something shiny in it catches your eye. How could you resist picking it up? But then, maybe you've found one of these dice before. Maybe you remember the Gameboard, already.

That's okay.

Even if you know better than to pick it up, all you have to do is look at it, and it's ensnared you. Again.

It looks like a normal die in terms of shape, and each side has a gilded number, one through six, carved into it. The most interesting part of it all is that the dice seems to be made of old, stained wood with fossilized opal throughout the whole piece. Something about it called to you, and now that it has your attention, a harsh wind slams into you. Darkness falls all around you–and then, slowly, a path illuminates. It’s black all around you; there’s no light, but you can see clearly marked spaces.

A line of squares unwind in front of you, each clearly marked.

You can’t see anything around you, can’t feel anything else–just the gameboard. And the die. Whether its in your hand or on the ground where you left it, it's there with you.

Even if you don’t recognize the game, you don’t really need instructions to know how to play–you have a die, and you have a path. In the distance, you can barely make out a dark wooden platform at the end of the path, but it seems to have the same fossilized opal inlay as the die–and pretty golden symbols along the rim.

You can’t step out of your square. Trying to leave the gameboard results in you walking to an invisible barrier and it feels like slamming into a glass wall. You cannot leave your space–unless the die says you can. If you want to get out of here, you’re going to have to roll your way there–but it isn’t so easy.

Strange gold markings differ from one square to the next. There’s no telling what they mean–you’re going to have to land on them to find out.

Though, judging by the tension in the air, it’s probably not going to be anything good.

Forsterite crouched on the ground near the sparkling item she saw on the floor in order to examine it better. The sparkle that had caught her attention in the first place turned out to be a bit of fossilized opal that had caught the light from the angle that she had seen it when walking nearby on patrol. She was surprised to find that the object made from the fossilized opal running through old, stained wood was a six-sided die. She was just debating whether or not to pick it up, having had her own fair share of encounters with strange objects in Destiny City before, when she was blown back by a sudden, harsh wind and everything went dark around her.

Space 0:
You have arrived here; nothing happens until you roll your die.

At first, she had thought it was some sort of trick from some enemy. However, as Forsterite righted herself, she could sense no one else in the nearby vicinity; nor could she see anyone or anything. It was all pitch black. Soon after, though, glowing squares marked with gold symbols began to illuminate a path before her. She counted them as they each slowly appeared, one through 20, not including the one she found herself standing on. The 20th square had a platform at its end that appeared to be made of the same old, stained wood as the die she had been examining, complete with veins of fossilized opal throughout. It seemed fairly clear to Forsterite that she was meant to get to the platform, but as soon as she tried to take a step toward it, she found herself blocked by what felt like an invisible glass wall.

Every side of her square seemed to be blocked off by the same invisible barrier. It wasn’t until she saw the die on the ground near her again that she guessed what she might have been expected to do. It seemed a little childish, but it was better to have a way out than to be stuck there forever, even if she was forced to play a game to do it. Mentally cursing whomever had managed to trap her in such a strange space, Forsterite reached down and picked up the die in order to make her first roll.

Space 2:
Something pale and ghostly slams into your back; you don’t see it, but it feels like it’s trying to push you forward–or to the side, or off the path. Thankfully, the magical glass walls stop you from going too far, but this is jarring–and might hurt.

Forsterite rolled her die. The instant it landed on a two, she felt something slam into her back much like the wind that had slammed into her when she had first crouched to examine the die better. She tried to look behind her, but she couldn't see anything. Was it a ghost...?

It felt like it kept trying to push her, but she couldn't tell if it meant to push her off the path or against the walls of the barrier that kept her on her square because that was where she ended up being shoved. She wasn't sure whether to be grateful for the barriers, because while they kept her from moving off her square or falling, the pressure between them and the force pressing at her back was almost painful.

Struggling to bend down so she could pick up the die on the ground, she eventually managed to roll it again.
