She'd kept promising herself that she'd pare down her time as Joy, and spend more time as Elaine. There was a certain amount of baggage to being Joy, lately, that was even worse than the usual, already-bad baggage.

And here she was, not only disregarding this intention of hers, but disregarding it in a way that was almost specifically designed to make that baggage a little bit heavier. It was not like her - not like Elaine, anyway - to anticipate meeting anyone with a sort of fluttering anxious feeling, but here she was, turning it over in the sullenness of her own head, which she was careful to keep there as she felt the approach of an allied signature growing nearer to the appointed meeting place.

It was a little easier to sing out in a cheerful voice to the unknown knight, because it was not Odainsaker that she was nervous about meeting, but someone else entirely - some stranger, who perhaps would be hurt by what she was about to do. She'd told a few people of late that she was not willing to bargain with other people's lives to save one that she cared about, but she'd said nothing about bargaining with their comfort or their feelings. They'd live.

Well, sort of.

"Good evening!" she called out, as soon as she thought they might be within earshot. "I hope the weather where we're going is as nice as it is here."

x Wonder info I've written up so far.

Odainsaker had answered a request from Joy that she'd posted looking for ancestors to bother. This was honestly good sounding to the squire since she needed to learn more about Neona and wasn't quite sure how to go about it.

So she was excited at the prospect that Joy had laid out. There was a grin from the cosmos squire, "Good Evening~!"

She called as she finally mad it to the meeting spot and there was a nod, "It should, the whole thing is on a floating set of islands that move around I haven't seen any crazy weather yet. I think it's the same year round." She said because she hadn't noticed anything that would've made weather possible.

There was a stretch before giving a nod, "If you're ready, we can go ahead and be off. I'm sure Neona'll be thrilled to meet someone else."

Once Joy indicated she was ready Odain whisked them to her wonder.

Joy's experiences with Wonders had been largely water based up to this point, with the exception of Ekstrom's chill and forbidding fortress.

So it was with surprise - especially as she had been thinking about Nis - but also with pleasure that she found herself in such a strange place - utterly alien in a way that no other Wonder had yet been to her. She had a quick, evaluating eye, taking everything in with a series of rapid and curious glances in a way that suggested she was filing the scenery away for perusal in memory.

“Thank you again for this,” she said, her eye turning outwards, then, towards space: a vastness that felt paradoxically oppressive. Thank God, she thought, that if she had to do this, she had been made a Knight of the familiar Earth. “Is there anything I should know? Please do show me around if you like,” she added, aware that this was a pleasure for many people besides just herself. “I'm happy to walk and talk, if you do.”

For reference, this is the best reference I have for Neona the wings are smaller though.

Odainsaker smiled while Joy seemed to take in the whole scenery and she stretched, it was interesting they landed on the first island but there wasn't much of an idea where they were headed today, it just kind of depended on where Neona was hanging. "Yeah walking and talking is good!"

"I'd advise to avoid falling off the edges. I don't know what happens if you do that. I haven't tried but I doubt there's a respawn point." She hummed as she walked, "Neona's somewhere around here probably, first time I found her she was manning one of the gate houses. Second time she was annoying me and complaining while I cleaned out her house and went through her things."

There was a pause, "Though I suppose that was fair since it was her stuff even though it's all super old."

The Squire seemed to think and then nodded, "Lets head to the main islands I'm sure we'll find her around there somewhere. I haven't totally explored this place a whole lot, having company besides her is nice."

She sighed, "Oh yeah Neona looks like a fairy, if you ask me so don't be surprised when she popped up. Honestly I'm a bit jealous, I would've loved to have pink skin and small gossamer wings." Honestly the whole wonder looked like a fairy grotto to her.

"I think there's some buildings that looked like there might be a bar with a patio up this way. We might be able to find her there?"

"You can find me where ever you look for me dear~" There came a sing song voice as Neona appeared, "Ohh you have company~ I do enjoy new faces."

The woman was looking Joy over as she curiously looked over towards Odain, "So are we here for a friendly visit or are you here because you need something again?" She teased the Squire before looking back to the earth knight, "I'm Neona dear, it's a pleasure to meet you."

There was another pause, "Ohhh but you were headed to the bar? Don't let me stop you, though I probably would check the wine really good if you're thinking about sampling what's here. I don't know what a few thousand years would do to it."

Odainsaker referring to Neona's things caused in her a twinge of guilt, as she remembered imperiously telling Gouvernail that everything on the Garde no longer belonged to him, and was hers. It had not even been an actual staking of claim, which might have excused it - it had been a petulant little act of defiance. She had regretted it since.

The thought ran on as she was led along, although it was derailed by the arrival of Neona. The greeting was a pleasant, unforeseen moment - Joy having convinced herself by now that every ghost was at least capricious and at most aggressive, having had little exposure to any evidence to the contrary. It buoyed her flagging confidence.

"Actually," said Joy, stepping forward with as genuine a smile as she could muster, "your protege has been so kind as to invite me to speak to you, if you'll do me the honor. I want to understand my own Wonder's ancestor better, and I hoped that you'd be willing to let me ask you some things. And also because it would be a pleasure to get to know you."

She glanced apologetically at Odainsaker, a little embarrassed to have to shunt the Knight to the side of the conversation for a bit. It was a little rude, considering the favor she'd been given, but her attention was concentrated on Neona in as much respectful deference as could be managed by someone like Joy, who whom deference was an alien territory.

"I am - the Knight of Joyeuse Garde," she continued, still unable, even after all this time, to use the place as her name. Again, a glance at her more living host. "Joy, if you like. I'd be happy to talk to you with Odainsaker present - or alone - whatever makes you more comfortable."

This, again, with a twinge of guilt at this little slight to Odainsaker, which she hoped she could be forgiven for.

Odainsaker tilted her head when Joy spoke up and shrugged softly. It was fair that Joy did want to speak with Neona and well, this would free her up to explore without too much of an issue with her ancestor giving her grief over things that were expected or what to leave alone.

She might not actually throw anything out but she did want to do some cleaning and tidying and maybe categorizing things and figure out what sorts of things needed repair around. She looked over to Joy and then Neona, "I'm fine to my own thing, I need to clean up more anyways, I can just go through the bar and start cleaning that and work my way around the little shops and common area while y'all chat."

There was a smile and thumbs up from the Squire hoping that Neona would also agree with the idea. She tried to make sure Joy understood that she was not upset with her in the slightest. Considering how much this freed her up if it worked.

Neona paused and looked at the current knight of Joyeuse Garde, "Ahhhh, Joyeuse Garde hmm?" There was a twitch of her wings as Neona crossed her arms seeming to think about this. "I think I've heard of a Joyeuse Garde, not sure that I've met him personally."

She gave a small grin, "But since Odain was so nice to invite you to speak to me I'd be more than happy to chit chat." There was a pause though as she looked at the squire of her wonder they were already halfway to the bar at this point anyways, "Don't you go throwing things away willy nilly without checking with me. You can clean up though, the bar is dreadfully dusty and I can't do a thing about it."

There was a small pout, but she seemed to enjoy having someone who was able to clean and make things look much better. "That said, I do have to say the way you gussied up the house it looks much better, at least it looks more lived in than how it was left."

Neona hummed, "Lets go sit at the patio, it's such a lovely night that'll be a great place for our little chit chat." Even though she couldn't touch things she could at least sit down, well, after conning her successor to move the chair out for her. "Thank you Odain dear, you're so kind to pull the chair out for me."

There was a soft wave of her hand, "You're dismissed deary I'll check up on you later." Afterwords she turned to Joyeuse Garde interested in the earth knight who was now before her. "You said you were the Knight of Joyeuse Garde? What do you prefer to be called if you don't go by your wonder's namesake dear?" It was an odd notion but she guessed it was perhaps the same as her no longer going by Odainsaker and having turned the handle over to the new variant she now went by her previous name of Neona, she supposed that the earth knight too would do such a thing.

She settled in with another curious glance at her surroundings. She enjoyed this new hobby of space tourism she'd accidentally picked up, but all of it - no matter how charming - had a tendency to make her more grateful for the Garde.

Turning her attention fully to Neona, she offered up another smile. “Joy is so much easier,” she said. “And thank you again.”

She hesitated. “It is possible,” she said, “that at some point my questions might feel - invasive, or even hurtful. It's not my intention to be disrespectful or cause you pain, if I do. Please tell me, if I cross any lines. We don't need to talk about anything you don't want to.”

She paused, again. “I am glad we have our ancestors to help us in such an active way. Is it a comfort to you to see your mantle passed to someone after all this time? Your protege was very kind to me when I said that I was looking for help.”

Odainsaker hummed as she wondered off, "I'll be over here if y'all need me." Disappearing off into the bar after she said that.

Neona watched the squire as she disappeared and sighed softly, turning to Joy and looked curiously at the earth knight. "Ah nice to meet you Joy."

The fairy sat looking curiously as Joy spoke saying that some questions might feel invasive or hurtful. There was a soft shrug, "I have nothing to hide deary, I've long since lost my flesh for this corporal body." There was a pause, "It gives a lot of time for some of us to process what happened. But if you by some mean manage to hit something I'm not interested in answering I'll let you know."

There was a moment as she seemed thoughtful, "It honestly would've been my hope that we could have lived in peace and by now Chaos would've petered out, however, it seems the opposite of my wishes is true." There was a pause, "I am glad that the mantel has been passed, but it very well could have been where I was reincarnated though the cauldron did not seem that was the fit for the occasion."

There was a pause, "Perhaps, the cauldron thought those of us not reincarnated were needed to help the code and cauldron guide you lot." She said softly with a pleasant smile.

There was a pause, "Let me ask you Joy, do you feel well equipped to handle being a knight and fighting the chaos to keep it from destroying the worlds around us?"

“No,” she said immediately. “But that's no fault of my - of the previous Garde. He can only do so much for me. And what he can do, he does. But I think he and I both have a sort of - well. Not despair. Despair means you stop, I think. But I wouldn't say either of us is real optimistic that we're on the winning side, just because we're on the right one.”

She paused. “I know in your time, you had a choice. Well.” She thought of Nail, and all his blunt assessment of just how much choice he'd felt he had. “Sort of. But we don't. You know? And an army of conscripts is never the best way to win a war. Maybe those of us who reincarnate feel differently - maybe because they made the choice once, it feels less like being drafted. Do you think?” She asked, wrinkling her nose. “Or am I misunderstanding why you ask?”

Neona folded her hands listening and watching Joy as she spoke, there was a soft smile as she nodded softly, There was a pause when Joy said she had a choice and her head wobbled a bit side to side.

"Despair, it's an interesting word. Chaos does seem to like to feed on it." She said softly thinking of her words. "Hesitation. Conflict. Doubt. It allows a weak moment for the Chaos to take over. Though, there are some that say the world needs Chaos, it needs the balance of black and white. Neither side is right, neither side is wrong, it's an ocean and tide that ebbs and flows."

There was another pause, "Without Order, Chaos grows out of control. We're here as a control for lack of a better perspective."

"As far as choices made, some of us were still not allowed a choice. Few were yes, those lucky enough to have siblings to debate over who becomes protector; others are forced. I can say I was lucky enough to have a sibling and both of us debated over it. I can't speak of anyone before me."

Neona stopped, "Do you think the reincarnate feels differently? Their Destiny thrown into their laps stories from their past, no one knew about?"

There was a soft chortle, "There is no wrong answer my dear Joy, nor do I feel you misunderstood the question. Only how you feel and if it's how you feel it's how you feel." She said softly, "However, I assure you the cauldron wouldn't've drafted you - so to speak - if it didn't believe you the correct choice."

Neona smiled, "But lets pin that for a moment, what other questions do you have for me?"

She managed to refrain, barely, from arguing both with the posited group that saw and benefit in Chaos and with the irrelevance of whether she was capable of doing the job she'd been involuntarily drafted for.

Neither of these things had any bearing on why she was here. In a different, less hectic time, she might have enjoyed sitting there and discussing the nuances of their respective opinions.

But she was here for a more specific reason, and turned her focus to it, hesitating before she asked something that she knew might be painful to many, if not necessarily to Neona.

“it is very personal. Thank you for hearing me out. My understanding is that knights in your position have in some way - acclimated - whether it's the process that keeps you from the Cauldron or your own willpower. Maybe only those strong enough to endure are made to stay away from the Cauldron as you are. Forgive me. I don't think anyone can ever be entirely without some kind of yearning in them, but that could be my own ignorance. I will confess, and I am sorry for it,” she said, with a surge of honesty, “that I am asking you in part because the person I want to ask can't answer fully. And I know everyone is different - especially for something like this - but I am asking to maybe understand the shape of your existence better: do you long for things? Is there - do you crave anything, now that you're… like you are? Or are all your hopes just for - for peace and victory and that kind of thing?”

She paused, a certain vulnerable earnestness in her voice as she reiterated: “I want to understand your existence a little better than I do, as much as I can.”

It occurred to her, with a wretched moment of self-reproach, that if she wished to understand her existence, maybe she ought to spend more time on those differences of opinion. But it was easier to ask a stranger, like this, about something more fundamental.

Neona watched Joy curiously as it seemed she'd hit a nerve even if slightly so and smiled softly when Joy did move away from the subject and moved to something that was perhaps more personal.

Neona sat for a moment in silence looking around and her wings gave a small twitch, "For the loneliness to go away."

Was the answer with a pause, "Well, that and a slice of pie with a hard drink."

There was a soft chuckle before shaking her head, "I'm somewhere between being and not being, I can't physically move or touch things that I once owned, the only people I see are the now Odain and any one she happens to bring. This place once use to be lively and bustling there was always something going on in the streets, even the hum of a bug would be nice to hear again."

There was a moment, "Watching everyone around you die off one by one because of some unknown illness, or chaos of some sort taking over the place you live. It's rough. You see it happen to this one or to that one and then it comes after you. There's a point where you're hapless and can't do anything but watch and hope that you can hold out and make it out the other side."

She sighed, "So eventually anything you crave and yearn for become minuscule really. Peace, would be nice at some point - perhaps to be able to rest my soul and maybe have a chance to see those who once inhabited this wonder would be nice as well. I'd be shocked if or when the cauldron would recycle me."

There was yet another pause as she sighed, "Of course if I'm correct even if I was recycled, I wouldn't remember my past and since Odain is a new soul and not a reincarnate, we wouldn't have past memories of anything that happened."

This was, of course, the painful questioning that Joy had alluded to, and she listened with an earnest gravity, her eyes turned on Neona unwaveringly.

"I know that there are ways," she said, hesitating a great deal over what she was about to say, "to bring you that peace. For the current Knight of this Wonder to give you that peace, eventually. But you're right that the cost seems astronomical. I don't think I'd be brave enough," she added frankly.

After another hesitation, she continued: "Maybe with the present Odainsaker back, things will turn around for you. I don't know if the people will ever return - I don't think they can - but I know that over time, the Garde has changed quite a bit from what it once was. When I arrived it was so silent that my skin crawled. I couldn't imagine standing there, watching it fall into that silence over all those centuries. But it's almost an alive place now."

Almost.

"Birds - bees - I saw some deer, once. Maybe all those things are in store for Odainsaker, as well, and you can have the joy of watching them return. It's not quite - I know it's not the same. But it's something, I hope," she said, and to her unutterable shame she - who had always thought herself not much of a sentimental person - found herself welling up with tears, as she did far too often recently. It was no cure to loneliness.

She thought of promising her: if I can do this impossible thing, I will bring you a slice of pie. But she had already established that hope was crueler than anything else. Why would she inflict it on someone else, when it was already tormenting the one close to her?

"If there's anything I can do to help - please tell me. I'll be honest - I didn't much wanna be a Knight. I always thought of myself as more of a Lady, you know? But I don't mind putting myself into your service, if you want it. I'll send you letters - I'll see if I can find anyone that knew you then, if you like. Feel free to get in touch with me any time through your protege," she added. "And now, if you don't mind: please tell me anything you'd like to tell me. I want to listen to anything you have to say - things you might not feel you can talk about to anyone, if you can trust me with them - small or large. He has said," she continued, without clarifying who "he" was and without really needing to, "that he can't imagine talking - really talking - to anyone but me, because everyone else comes and goes. But sometimes, maybe it's easier to say things to someone who comes and goes than it is to say things to someone very close to you. You know?" And she smiled, here, a painful little smile of earnestness.

Neona looked at Joy when she said she knew there were ways that present knights could give peace. There was a wistful sigh, "While there's plenty to teach I doubt any of us would actually want to finally see that peaceful life."

Neona softly glanced towards the building where Odain was doing something. Softly nodded, "I doubt the people will ever return as they were. But if things came back and lived, that would be nice, being able to hear birds and bees would make it so I'm just not in my head a lot of days."

There was a pause when she listened to Joy speaking about being more of a lady, "My dear, some of the best knights were ladies. Do not let being a knight make you think you are not a lady."

There was a soft smile as Joy said that she could talk to her. She tried to place her hand on Joy's with a sigh as it didn't really work well, not that she expected it to. "I appreciate the thought and would love to have letters from you, perhaps include Garde as I'd enjoy hearing from him even if I only knew him in passing and not personally."

The woman sighed, "For tonight I think I've burdened you enough with the heaviness. Unless you have more questions for me; should we see what troubles Odain has caused while cleaning up and I give her a hard time about not liking something she's done." There was a soft playful wink as she chuckled. It was more the fact she had someone to torment occasionally now.

She knew from long experience that while the extending of a hand might not yield any touch, the gesture itself had power. So she reached out and closed her own hand over the space where Neona’s should have been, and gave her as bright a smile as she was capable of.

“I thought I'd have more to ask,” she said, “but you answered everything I needed to know before I could ask it. I'll check in with you - and ask whether the birds have come back yet, since I'm sure they will, in time. Maybe you can tell me about the birds,” she suggested, rising from her seat, “while we go look for Odainsaker? I don't know much about birds that don't come from Earth.”
