With more of these humans having visited her, she quite liked the simplicity of conversation about weather and books. It wasn’t loaded with expectation or responsibility. It was light conversation with little risk put forth by either party. It was refreshing, unlike every interaction with those who were of the magical persuasion.

Stepping out into the evening, she looked over a small map of the area which would lead her through some of the nearby parks. It would likely have some civilians populating the area but keeping what Desiree had said in mind, she kept herself near to the edge for now unless she felt comfortable with new people. It wasn’t that she feared them, no it was the exact opposite, but she couldn’t gauge things until it might be too late. While she wanted nothing to do with others who sought to repair their worlds or pull her into their own matters, she did want to learn more about the mundane lives that some lived here.

They were unaware of their futures, mostly living in the present without the knowledge of what may come, and it fascinated her. It was a place she now found her self in, uncertain when in the past she had some level of foresight even if it was just minimally advanced. With that sick and twisted encryption, the one that she still could not crack, she found herself stuck and inflamed with rage that she was still trapped in her world potentially. Even the mundane stories of people could be fabrications, perhaps information buried of other worlds deep in the library. It was a thought she hated to dwell on, sending her mood plummeting as she felt something prickling on her senses, something faint nearby, something that felt similar but brought no relief to her mood. If anything, the fact someone who might be powered up had a scowl fixed upon her face as she stood at the edge of the trees, waiting.

The critical error Blarney had made was that he had started to think of the park - or at least this section of the park - as ‘his’. It wasn’t where he’d turned into Blarney for the first time, but it was near enough, and it was where he’d transformed before bringing himself and his sister to his Wonder. It felt like nothing bad could happen here.

He was so convinced of this, in fact, that he paid absolutely zero attention to the little twinge that said hey - someone else is out there.

He was actually whistling when he broke through the trees, spinning his stick casually over his fingers. They didn’t have baton twirling as part of Meadowview’s cheer curriculum, but he was familiar enough with the basic concepts to not be dropping his magical stick every three seconds.

Blarney finally noticed the presence on the other side of the glade, the whistle dying in his lips and his magic stick-twirling coming to an abrupt halt. It appeared to be… a witch.

Sure. There were senshi, aliens, and ghosts. Why wouldn’t there be witches, too?

“...Hi there?” Blarney said cautiously, eyes flicking down to the witch’s fingers, which did not so much seem to be fingers as they appeared to be….claws? Burned claws? Something very pointy and more than a little scary, but…

Ghosts, aliens. He shouldn’t be judgy.

“I like your hat,” Blarney said, voice sounding weak to his own ears. He was…fairly certain that this witch was a good guy. Certain-ish. Mostly sure.

…But just in case it wasn’t, Blarney tightened his grip on his staff and planted his feet firmly beneath him. This was his little corner of the park, wasn’t it? Why should he be the one to leave?

With the snapping of branches and foliage, she turned to face the source of the noise and noticed the abrupt end of whatever noisemaking they were doing. They looked young… and not just in the way that some other outsiders had looked. While Selinur was small and looked young, this one… felt young.

Looking down at them, as she could tell, this one had the right idea about being cautious. But she still didn’t like being bothered, and she tapped her nails on the barrel of the fountain pen she held as she pointed it at them slightly.

“Hello.” Short and clipped, as she noticed the attention to her nails. Narrowing her eyes as she watched him bumble and fiddle through what she could guess was a poor attempt at light conversation, she then noticed the tightening of their grip on that piece of wood.

Taking a step forward, crowding closer into their space, she watched him with those skull-like irises of hers focused. “You know it’s rude to interrupt a lady.” Letting the annoyance and warning come out in her voice, where he seemed to be unsure, she was very much confident in her words and her ability to potentially run another one off and out of her path.

“I wasn’t interrupting,” Blarney retorted, narrowing his eyes slightly. “You were just standing there. I didn’t do anything wrong, or anything rude,” he said, huffing a little in spite of himself. He was many things, but rude wasn’t one of them. Thoughtless, impulsive, stubborn–sure. But rude?

Blarney’s eyes darted toward the tool in the witch’s hand. He couldn’t actually tell what it was, just that it looked–sharp, somehow, and its gleam was not what he would call friendly. He wasn’t sure if it was a weapon, but he wasn’t sure it wasn’t, either.

“What are you doing, anyway?”

Huffing slightly, she rolled the pen in her fingers and lifted the notebook into their view. “Standing here taking notes on things. Given this is a public space, at least I assumed it was, you were being rude to interrupt someone working.”

Again they looked at her pen and with a quick motion, threw her hand forward with it, dreadfully close to their face until the tip scratched their face with the threat of something much worse coming if he pushed her more. Those who were nosey were more bothersome than any other, they reminded her of those blasted Selinurians who always had stuck their noses in everyone’s affairs without cause.

“It seems like you were out for a less mundane reason.” Nodding towards the stick they seemed to be determined to cling to. Half of her wondered if this was one of those things called a knight, something that had been only sparingly written of on her world. They hadn’t breached the barrier to get to the library back then, only a few had, so she hadn’t encountered any in person. Not that she particularly cared about anyone from the outside back then.

“Why don’t you run along and go play with someone your own age?” Speaking bitterly, she didn’t pull the pen back yet, but did close the notebook with her free hand. She didn’t need them to nose into her studies on all this human stuff, and she would prefer not to continuously be harassed by those who were trying to futilely fix their own dead worlds. If she could scare this one off now, then she wouldn’t hopefully have to deal with them again in the future.

“Ow! Hey!” Blarney yelped–she’d moved scary fast, too quick for him to even try to block or defend against her. Reflexively, he brought the stick across in an arc to push the pen out of his face and stumbled back away from her, hopefully out of her reach. He brought a hand to his face to see if he was bleeding–he didn’t think so, but still, hey.

“You know, by your own logic,” Blarney said, setting his jaw slightly as he determined that no, actually, he wouldn’t be running along anywhere, “this is a public space. I have just as much right to be here as you do. You are the one who had no cause to attack me.”

Blarney kept his eyes on her, but didn’t lunge forward - his stick would not do him much good, even against a weapon like a pen, and he didn’t have any magic. He’d been working on self-defense, but that was for self-defense, not self-attacking-a-witch-lady-in-the-woods.

“I just came out here to train,” he explained, “and I’m not here to hurt anybody, unlike you, apparently. Man, are you this welcoming to everyone, or am I special?” Blarney brought his hand to his cheek again, not convinced he wasn’t bleeding. “That was seriously not cool, lady.”

Pulling her hand back with their motion, she looked down at the newest pen Desiree had given her and noticed the tip was bent now. She would have to figure out how to fix that or explain it away as it had rolled somewhere in her home as she was unpacking. That sounded like a reasonably human response… perhaps. But she did like this gift, so as she looked up at the boy she gave a cold glare.

How petulant they were… Taking a step forward, she pulled a different book out and flipped it open. With a grim face, she studied how it was still covered in those black and indecipherable scrawling codes. After another moment, she snapped it shut and let her magic ooze out. “Vocal Cipher.”

The symbols of her encryption were warped, much as the book that was tied to her and her world. It sickened her, but at least this child couldn’t spout anything else that annoyed her now while her magic ebbed out around them. It left her tired though, maybe because of her mood or the weather. Either way, she had had enough of things and turned to move back towards the path to her home. It would be a waste of words to respond anymore and her mood was furthered soured. Perhaps she would ask Desiree about this book of hers. It might not bring any results but at least there would be another pair of eyes on it to confirm things.

Blarney eyed the book cautiously, eyes going wide as she said a command phrase, and all sorts of–weirdness appeared around her. Remembering Halia’s warning - don’t get in any fights you’re not sure you can win - Blarney didn’t even wait around to see the effect of whatever magic it was this witch had cast, or to see if she was chasing after him. He just booked it as fast as he could back the way he’d come, hoping that those weird symbols hadn’t done him any lasting damage.
