Creeping from Headquarters and venturing out into Destiny City proper, Cuan sighed. Creating a wholeass (to steal a turn of phrase from her senshi) AI that looked and, to some degree, felt real was exhausting stuff. And she was still missing so many elements. The silly thing moved like something out of a cheap horror movie. What she needed was a body model to train the AI on, but her hunt for volunteers had, thus far, yielded nothing.

Not to mention that she was beginning to suspect that she’d need a piece of Saiph (planet, not senshi) to keep the program stable long enough to do what she needed it to do. She’d have to run the numbers again, but so far everything was pointing to her needing to coax her girl back up to her homeworld for a visit.

The kitten was so wrapped up in her own thoughts and worries, that her brain had sort of glossed over the various energies and auras within the city. Which should not have been much of an issue, except for the fact that she had wandered directly into the path of someone powerful and was risking being launched across the sidewalk.

Joy, for all she was clothed in all her Knightly glory, was still learning the vagaries of the energy signatures of Mauvians. And her attention was elsewhere, in any case - dwelling on the uncomfortable feeling that to be out and about was now to possibly court some sort of negative attention that would not be so easy to recover from. Perversely, her new power, rather than investing her with more confidence, had only made her feel more paranoid, and she had resisted visiting it in Destiny City until tonight, and it felt more like an experimental excursion than anything else.

So it was that at first she noticed nothing but a cat -a kitty, as her mind joyously supplied - and did not register the tell-tale signs that it was not just a cat until she had already - oh, dignity! - knelt down and extended her fingers with an excited "pspsps" sound.

"Oh, my god," she said, immediately realizing her error. "I'm so sorry."

The first hint that she really, really needed to pay better attention and not let her problems take over was the human hand extending towards her followed by ‘pspsps’. Startled, Cuan reared away, back hunching just as the woman, no wait, the knight, in front of her looked utterly horrified and began apologizing. Relieved that she hadn’t just begun hissing and batting instinctively with a paw, Cuan blinked once, sat down and tilted her head up to look at the knight. How had she missed a knight of all things? It was embarrassing, frankly.

“This is what I get for focusing too hard,” she muttered to herself. Then, she seemed to rally, giving her tiny body a shake before assuming a more graceful posture and nodding graciously.

“I believe the fault should be split equally,” she said. “I wasn’t watching where I was going and I am rather small. I suppose that it would make it harder to see my star until you were right there.”

It was probably the closest to an apology that Cuan was likely to give. Besides, she answered to the siren call of the pspspsps with Saiph when they were playing. Or when random civilians simply saw Smol Cat and wanted to pet the cute little stray. She was wandering around in cat form. It would be beyond silly to take offense to being treated as a cat.

“You may still pet me if you like,” she offered. Standing up, she stretched and yawned. “There is a very itchy spot on my back that I can't quite reach. I’d be quite grateful if you’d oblige…?”

She moved a little closer and really looked at the knight. Greens and browns, crossed circles. Granted this one was much fancier than she’d encountered thus far.

“Hrmmm. Earth knight, is it? Lovely to meet you.”

As far as Joy was concerned, there were only two good things about the whole Destiny City Bullshit situation: the uniform, and talking cats.

This was an especially high quality talking cat, with a juxtaposition between her somewhat formal speech and her dainty kittenish appearance that had Joy mentally reminding herself that this was a sapient being worthy of dignity and respect and that it would not be polite to erupt into a pained squeal.

Her thoughts had been frantically running ahead trying to devise some polite way to ask if she could pet, only for the cat herself to offer it up and save her the trouble. She managed to put a damper on her inward enthusiasm and a second urge to squeal, instead reaching out and obligingly offering her scratchy fingers, which had the advantage of coming with meticulously kept and somewhat pointy acrylics. She was, in fact, sort of walking catnip in uniform: all intriguingly warm furry texture and abundant soft lap and scritchy-scratchy nails and lots of little dangling stringy bits everywhere, right down to her weapon. It was a bit of a shame that she'd spent way more time running into dogs that were actually youma than she had running into cats that were actually spacefaring magical people.

"Yes. Joyeuse Garde," she said, although the French accent lapsed back out as she offered the less complicated nickname instead. "But Joy, preferably. I haven't met very many of you - not enough to remember to keep an eye out, I guess."

"Joyeuse Garde," Cuan repeated slowly, rolling the words on her tongue. It was a mouthful and no doubt. Much like her own name. "Joy it is. My full name is Cuan Oilean, but Cuan works just as well."

She would have said more, but Joy had begun to obligingly scratch her back and the kittens eyes rolled back white in sheer pleasure. Wriggling slightly to keep under those lovely, pointed nails, she began purring. Loudly. Perhaps ine day, she might be able to talk Saiph into similar nails.

"That. That right there," she churred. "That's the spot right there. You have one million years to stop."

It was difficult in the face of such expert scratches to remember that she had dignity and was supposed to operate as a helper and sometimes mentor. As she melted a little into the pavement, Cuan rather thought that dignity could hang itself for a few moments.

As far as Joy was concerned, the only creature capable of bossing her around would be a cat, given that a cat's natural role is to boss everyone around. She therefore complied, delighted.

"I hate everything about this job except for the Mauvian part," she announced, as if having just arrived at the decision. "And the hair, I like the hair. But mostly the Mauvian part."

She forgot herself enough to use her free hand to shake one of her tassels in front of Cuan's face, instinctively lapsing into interacting-with-a-kitten mode. "Cuan Oilean's a hell of a mouthful too. Do you get assigned those like we do?" It had never before occurred to her to ask, or even really to wonder about it.

Ignoring the tassel for the moment in favor of answering questions, Cuan roused herself just enough to give a wel thought out answer. That was the least she could do.

"I have always been Cuan Oilean," she said softly. "I've never had any other name, nor memories of other names. We are not offices or titles like senshi and knights seem to be. We're just Mauvians."

Shifting slightly to crawl up onto Joy, Cuan settled quickly enough and seemed content to simply be. At least, up until she turned bright blue-green eyes to look directly into the Earth Knight's face.

"By job, I'm assuming that you mean being a knight? Tell me, would you fully trust anyone who would willingly and with full knowledge walk into something like this? I'm sure some of those people would be lovely and trustworthy, but all of them? No. No, I think not."

The kitten began to reflexively knead her paws, it did help her to think sometimes. And she wanted to make sure she was using the right words for this.

"I could be wrong, since I'm really not familiar with how knights work, but I think I'd prefer to trust the ones who are wary about all this. Even dislike it. I feel like they'd be the ones least likely to see their status as a means to gain some kind of dominion. Though I do agree that I quite like your hair. It's so lovely and golden."

She did hope to learn more about knights in general and Joy specifically, or she wouldn't have shot directly to philosophy. Even though she'd meant every word. Cuan had an idea that the ones who hated this life but still powered up and did what was needed were the ones least likely to willingly corrupt.

Uncomfortably aware that she had come to consider Knighthood as something like means to gaining dominion - but excusing it as dominion over a single place in a single pocket dimension with no one there to bend to her will (at least that mattered), she chose not to address the idea, backtracking a bit.

She absently offered chin scratches while she considered Cuan's ideas. "I think I know someone who walked into it and I think I'd trust him. But that was a thousand years ago, and maybe things were different, then. And I don't think he feels like he really walked into it willingly, in hindsight. Like it would have been wrong not to, which I guess, to him, is the same thing as not having a choice at all. But I guess you're right. One outlier doesn't really mean anything." She paused. "And I guess - the agents on the other side - they recruit them, don't they? Hand-chosen? And god knows they're out here treating people like livestock. Yeah. You're probably right. But it still sucks."

She sighed. "As to how it works - he got a choice, a thousand years ago, even if it didn't feel like a choice to him. Me? I grabbed a ribbon on the sidewalk and next thing you know I'm a pawn on the world's stupidest chess board. No - chess is too dignified a term. It's checkers. But I get to talk to cats," she observed, "and the uniform's a real killer. And I get a little castle that's all in ruins and wreck that I feel obligated to clean up on my weekends. But that's not all bad, either. There's magic in it."

Eyes half closed in pleasure, Cuan shrugged as best she could. Well, yes, of course things would have been different a thousand years ago. That was simple logic. There had been resources back then. And a true Queen…

Sighing a little, the kitten forced herself to sit a bit more upright. “If you’ve spoken to someone who went through this a thousand years ago, I’m assuming it must be your predecessor. I’ve never gotten to talk to a ghost, at least not a real one. And I’m certainly nowhere near that old, but I can make some reasonable guesses.”

Closing her eyes for a moment as she thought very hard, Cuan found herself wishing that she had more in the way of concrete facts. She had a suspicion that Joy would appreciate those more. Ah well.

“Back then, it probably was along the lines of willing volunteers. Olympus was fully functional and there were ways and means of tracking likely candidates for Knights. I suspect it was probably a point of pride for many families to have a chosen knight or two within the bloodline. Of course, that doesn’t mean that there weren’t any unwilling to take up arms, but… well. It wouldn’t surprise me if the situations were rather reversed to what they are now. Things were more peaceful then, I think.”

She bristled slightly at the mention of the Negaverse. Her information on them was even scantier than what she knew about knights! But she had once lived with a senshi who hated them with a passion that had been a little scary at times.

“I’m sure they try to recruit more… hmmm… promising individuals. But, let’s be frank. They also just seem to go and grab and corrupt anyone who strikes their fancy on a Tuesday. And some, well,” now Cuan looked truly uncomfortable. She wasn’t entirely certain how much Joy knew and if the poor girl was already feeling antsy about knighthood, Cuan didn’t want to frighten her further. But if she wasn’t warned and something happened. No, Cuan would never be able to forgive herself if she saw those beautiful Earth colors dimmed and darkened one day. “I’m hoping that someone has warned you about forced corruption. It doesn’t matter if you’re a knight or senshi. If one of their Generals takes too much of an interest in you, it can end very badly.”

She was more than willing to allow the subject to change to one less alarming. She even found herself laughing at the idea of a millennium spanning conflict being relegated to a particularly bad game of checkers. It was a fairly apt description at times, but that didn’t stop it being funny.

“Oh, I like you,” she purred. “The situation does suck and I am sorry for that, but you seem to have some solid common sense when it comes to handling it. But if I may make a suggestion? Hold onto all the magic you can when it comes to this. Let yourself feel sad or angry, but don’t let those feelings be all that you have, if that makes sense.”

Cuan began to climb Joy at that point, wanting to perch on her shoulder for ease in head-bonks. And as soon as she could, she did just that, bonking her tiny head gently against the knight’s face and purring as loudly as possible.

The juxtaposition between the extremely catlike behavior and the sage life-or-death advice coming out of Cuan's mouth was a little surreal, and Joy had to refrain from a sudden and inappropriate laugh, pulling her fur collar up a bit to provide a cozier position for the Mauvian to distribute head bonks from.

"Well," she said, after a moment's pause. "As far as being corrupted goes, I figure there's not much I can do about it." She did not foresee the Code, any time soon, reaching out and making her immune in the way it had for Ekstrom and Encke. Her relationship to it was too volatile, too adversarial. "I won't go willingly. All I can do is avoid getting into the situation, and if I do get into it-" she would have shrugged, if it wouldn't have dislodged the cat. "Well. I guess I'll just have to make it more convenient to kill me than corrupt me."

She hesitated again, reaching up to give her a scratch. It wasn't worth lingering on to consider what "peaceful" had meant for Gouvernail, whose affairs had largely been down among the petty squabbles of the men of Earth, which had been bloody enough, as the affairs of earthly men nearly always were. It was irrelevant, anyway: that would have been his fate whether or not he'd been given a signet ring. Becoming a Knight rather than a knight had only served to make his worldview more complicated and his guilt more stringent. "But for the rest - I'm trying. I'm not really one to get down into my feelings for longer than it takes to sleep them off. Who has the time? Everything is so short."

Well. Almost everything. She might end up spending a thousand years trapped in a dying castle alone. This was a thought not worth dwelling on.

"And the magic keeps coming, I guess. I did find some good magic recently. Can I show you?" she said, but even as she asked she was already gingerly reaching into a hidden pocket among her fox tails, moving gently so as to avoid disrupting Cuan's perch. The summons, she thought, might not inspire the same kind of delight in a kitten that it did in her. But this was a type of magic almost ideally suited to capture a cat's fancy: she pulled out a length of beautiful red ribbon, the gold threads woven through it catching on the street lights, and she held it up for inspection. "They weave themselves. I think it's actually maybe a cruel joke in a way - it's a long story - but I don't mind." The ribbon wafted a pleasant fragrance, half spice and half flower. "I think they're sort of - favors. Like a Lady in an old chivalric romance would hand out to her champions. You know?"

Noddign along as Joy spoke, Cuan was… mostly satisfied. Knights might not be under her care the way senshi were, but she rather thought that she’d prefer to keep as many of them alive and uncorrupted as she could. But as Joy had rightly pointed out, there wasn’t much that could be done other than making it not worth the effort, dying or simply avoiding questionable situations. She didn’t like it, but she also couldn't argue with it.

At least Joy wasn’t actively courting the bastards.

“Trying still counts. And it seems like you’ve a better handle on all of this than most,” she finally settled on saying. Really, she was quite proud of this Earth Knight’s pragmatism. Joy had sense and that was a precious commodity as far as the kitten was concerned. Even so, she was immediately distracted from her thoughts at the offer of being shown a new magic. Ears perking with interest, she nodded, “I would be delighted to see it.”

Her already big and round eyes became even bigger and rounder as Joy produced the ribbon. She sat very still on Joy’s shoulder, though the tip of her tail began to twitch violently. Perhaps later she’d feel a tiny drop of shame for reacting in such a cat-like way to a bit of ribbon, but for now… For now, she was content to stare at the lovely thing, leaning forward slightly so that she could sniff delicately at it. The floral scent coming off of it was, Cuan thought, better than catnip.

She half listened as Joy explained and hid her smile at the mention of cruel jokes. Since Joy had mentioned finding a bit of ribbon right before being sucked into all of this, Cuan had to assume that that was where the joke lay. Still, she didn’t pry.

Besides, she was far more interested in the fact that these ribbons seemed to weave themselves. Really, magic was such an interesting thing.

“Favors, hrmm?” Cuan murmured softly. Yes, she could see that. “Yes, I think that’s appropriate. It certainly looks like something a beautifully gowned and coiffed lady would give to a champion. Before I met my senshi, I lived with another who dated a fellow who was very much into the renaissance faire scene. This seems very much like the things he would describe being given out during their little tourneys. Minus the actual magic of course.”

Now, the kitten did smile as she turned to watched the knight’s expression.

“It’s a lovely thing. Thank you for showing me!”

She paused, and then waved the ribbon vaguely.

"Do you want it?" she asked, feeling almost a little shy. "I think I'm supposed to be giving them away. Spreading the good parts around," she added drily. "I could tie it to your collars really loosely if that would help you get it home? You don't have to," she added, wrinkling her nose again. "It really is a bit renfaire."

She did not add what she was thinking, which was: and then when no one's watching you can play with it like a cat ought to and which you clearly want to do, without sacrificing your dignity.

Blue-green eyes locked onto the ribbon as it was waved around. She very badly wanted to roll around on it, it smelled so nice. And she had almost worked herself up to be brave enough to ask if she could hold it for a moment when Joy asked if she wanted it. Like, to keep. Blinking, the kitten paused, wanting to find a more polite way of saying ‘GIMME’. And, since she clearly couldn’t trust her words, she settled for nodding eagerly.

“I do like that idea of spreading the good around,” she finally managed. “Though it makes me wish I had something I could give you. Head bonks don’t quite seem sufficient.”

Carefully moving down Joy’s arm and chest until she could sit primly in the knight’s lap, Cuan tilted her head back slightly to provide a clearer view of her collar beads.

“If you could, that would be so kind,” she said softly. “Carrying it in my mouth and getting it all soggy just seems rude. I can have Saiph untie it for me once I get home. I’m sure she’ll enjoy hearing about all of this, though she’ll probably laugh and accuse me of conning you into thinking I am sweet and good.”

The kitten’s smile held a hint of spiciness that implied that these arguments and insults were filled with a great deal of affection and usually done in jest. A solid partnership.

“Of course, I am incredibly sweet and good,” she added. “Alas, honesty compels me to tell you that I also hog the blankets when it’s cold. I do like you very much, Lady Knight. Someday, I hope I can see your wonder and meet your thousand year old friend.”

"I feel," said Joy very seriously, as she began to tie the ribbon on, "that actually the ribbon is a poor trade for something as valuable as head bonks. I can coast for at least three solid days on the good vibes provided by an excellent head bonk."

When it was attached, the ribbon seemed to suffuse, very briefly, a feeling of encouragement and motivation.

"You are sweet and good," she said firmly, as if subconsciously reinforcing the feeling. "And I know that because I'm a blanket hog myself, so I have to defend the honor of both of us. Maybe just the good part," she added with a little laugh, giving the bow a pat to indicate that she was done. "I don't know if sweet has ever been my style. But I think I can be sweet enough to extend you an invitation - and your friend Saiph too - once I figure out better how to manage visitors. It's still sort of -" she waved a hand vaguely. "You know. But I'm getting there."

What she did not say was that the logistics were easy - that she had, in fact, already taken a Mauvian and her bonded with no problem at all. The problem lay in managing Gouvernail's feelings about it, and in truth, her own, which simultaneously craved having people on the Garde and dreaded taking them there. It was a bit like having a very beautiful secret, which gained some cachet from being shared, but also ran the risk of being in some way robbed of its value.

"I like you very much too," she added, with a sudden and beaming smile, which brought out a pair of dimples. "I will be in touch, if I ever figure that out. And maybe I'll run into you again in the meantime some time."

Spinning in a careful circle, Cuan preened a little once the ribbon was tied on. She felt like she could take on the world and Joy’s praise was very sweet to her. And honestly, it was pretty encouraging to know that she wasn’t alone in her blanket hogging. Leaping lightly from Joy’s lap to the ground, she sat for a moment to wash her face with a paw before grinning.

“If it is any consolation, at least you only have to worry about a castle. I have been to Saiph’s world perhaps twice now and it’s a little alarming how overgrown everything is. And how big the trees there are. I can't imagine how we’re going to restore that place. And I’ll accept your invitation for the both of us, thank you!”

The sudden appearance of dimples when the knight smiled caused the kitten’s grin to grow even wider. She rarely got dimples out of anyone with her antics. This was shaping up as a Very Good Night, Indeed as far as she was concerned. She believed Joy when she promised to be in touch.

“I’m sure you’ll figure it out. And if your signet ring is upgraded to allow for the real time communication, that should expedite the process. In any case, I am glad I met you tonight, Joyeuse Garde of Earth. Thank you for the conversation, the scratches and the ribbon! I will treasure it.”
