The window between "total apocalypse" and "return to relative normalcy" had been so short as to be simultaneously depressing - in implying that perhaps this sort of thing was not as uncommon as one could wish - and a relief.

Elaine - and therefore Joy - had lived a life relatively untouched by grief or trauma, and so she still had to learn that the world kept on turning - provided it had not been eaten by a giant snake - even when it felt as thought it ought to have at least stopped long enough to let everyone catch their breath.

She needed a vacation, she thought, not from work but from powered life altogether. And she'd been trying to take one. But she'd kept her eyes open, unable, now, to fully close them.

A wise move, as it had turned out - for the civilian, at least, if not for Elaine, who had, with her heels dangling from her hand and her feet bare on the dirty sidewalks, hitherto gone unnoticed in her prowling. She had come to recognize certain things, and while a woman in a pencil skirt might have only seemed like a respectable colleague a few months before, the scene with all its telling specifics was recognizable to her now when she turned the corner to see it. Her own pencil skirt was not the appropriate attire for the occasion, but a brief detour was enough for her to assume the guise of the Joyeuse Garde, her energy signature flaring into life only seconds before the sound of her approaching steps arrived, and seconds later, an ear-piercingly shrill noise.

Quote:
When blown, the whistle can disorient all opponents within fifteen feet. The whistle can be used once per day and effects should be discussed with your RP partner before use, but can include dizziness, nausea, headaches, and temporary deafness, any of which can linger upon player desire. Anyone who is not considered hostile will not hear any noise when the whistle is blown.

it's been 84 years..... ty for patience ;u;

Was it stupid she was still kept up by nightmares nearly a month after that whole... world eating space snake incident? What about when added in with the vision of that crystal-encircled entity, cracked and darker than the backdrop of the void of space? The Dark Star, or at least she had to assume that's what it was, given the information in the database...

It'd certainly given her new reasons to move her a** more on collecting energy, either way.

Spectrolite was out all the more frequently now, taking advantage of her restless nights to utilize the time to wander the streets. Didn't matter the time--she could find a bar or club somewhere that had people milling around it, or some twenty-four hour place that had folks loitering.

There was always something.

Around more normal-ish hours, well. She was spoiled for choice. Warm as it was, she'd ditched the usual trench coat she'd been wearing as of late, though she ripped off the epaulettes and the tassels from her boots. They weren't really pieces she could get away with in the more casual image of business woman. The exposed midriff was also pushing it, but she figured she cast enough of a civilian look to pass in the crowds.

And she had. It'd been easy to swipe small bits of energy from folks as she walked and window-shopped, never lingering long in a particular area. At least... till she realized some guy was following her. He was drunk, she was pretty sure, and had tried to swipe at her arms earlier when she'd gone past a group loitering around the neon lights of a bar. Spectrolite had considered just ignoring him, but when she slipped down an alley, and he followed...

Well. Taking enough energy for him to pass out wouldn't be bad. She could see if he had a phone after, call emergency services for him to come find him.

The plan was simple, and the purple glow of energy as she siphoned it into an orb in her hand was soothing as the guy slid down against the wall across the way.

The plan got ruined when she felt the pang of a knight energy signature near her that made her immediately send away the orb into subspace as it was, and then rapid footsteps and-- "<********>!" Spectrolite yelped as high-pitched screeching assaulted her ears. Though her hands went to cover them, the sound still dug into her, making her head spin and her stomach along with it. She felt woozy, dizzy, and nauseous. It was gross and she hated it. The goofy toy that was her 'weapon' appeared in her hand, and she slung a few of the plastic rings in the direction of the other, still upright, figure.

"I haven't done anything to him! He's just exhausted, not dead!" Her voice sounded weird to her as she tried to back up, steps feeling uneasy. Like she was underwater, and all other sounds were... muffled? It didn't stop when she moved her hands away from her ears.

She glared towards the blonde woman in... well. What she'd actually call a beautiful dress, if circumstances were different. But they weren't, and she held the remaining stacking rings and plastic pole they sat on defensively in front of her. Her head was ringing, ugh...

Getting bonked in the head with a plastic ring, even when thrown by someone with a magically-enhanced throwing arm, was not exactly going to send Joy packing. It was, however, extremely annoying, enough that her little "ow" was more an indignant complaint about the inconvenience than expression of pain.

But even that wasn't quite enough to stop her from bursting into almost hysterical laughter at the shape the assault took. Obligingly, she scooped to pick the ring up and fling it back towards her opponent.

"Reload," she suggested, snorting.

Still, the utter ridiculousness of the agent's weapon wasn't quite enough to get her entirely off her guard. Things could and often did - she knew - go suddenly tits up in these situations. So she still hefted her whip in one hand, approaching slowly with a wary caution. Her eyes flicked down to the drained man, narrowing.

"If you didn't do anything to him, then why's he exhausted?" she challenged, apparently having a different definition of "anything" than Spectrolite.

Red bloomed across her cheeks, darkening her features even as Spectrolite tried to settle her dizzy and whirling head. The knight's laughter was... okay, she couldn't blame her for it. The weapon was horrifically stupid. She'd rather a plastic knife or something instead of this stupid baby toy.

Her vision at least was kind of settling when she realized the other woman was tossing back the brightly colored rings--Spectrolite stumbled as she attempted to catch them, balance still extremely off-kilter. She at least remained on her feet, and with a huff, simply pulled them back to her in a quick poof and reappearance back on the stick as she summoned them.

She still kept the toy up as a would-be shield, even if she knew it was literally useless for that. "He-- haaa..." Her breath left in a heavy sigh of an exhale, the heavy embarrassment still staining her face. Just trying to explain via what even she'd totally call excuses was... honestly, really ******** stupid on her part.

Spectrolite cleared her throat softly, straightening up where she stood. "I drained enough energy from him to pass out, so you're right, I did something to him. I meant I didn't do anything to his starseed. I was going to call the cops and they'd come pick him up, bring him to jail for being drunk in public, and he'd wake up with a hangover or something in the morning." Not that she really expected the woman to believe her, on that or anything else, but she scowled slightly as her gaze flicked briefly to the man in question. It seemed pointless to even explain her rational on anything, and considering she couldn't teleport... she took a few steps back instead, biting her tongue in annoyance as she still felt wobbly. Ugh....

She made a contemptuous noise, somewhere between a snort and spitting, but she did not immediately retaliate, apparently turning over her words. She held the whip, however, as if ready to use it, and the fact that she seemed ready to use it when Spectrolite was clearly out of range of its lash suggested that whatever she was considering, it might be some sort of magic rather than a physical blow. But then again, she also held that whip like she knew how to use it on its own merits, too, and she bounced it in her hand as she narrowed her eyes, slowly drawing closer - more towards the unconscious man than towards Spectrolite, although to do one was to do the other.

"I don't have any reason to believe you," she observed. She did flick the whip, then, but there was no pain - no more drunk disorientation or piercing noise, no blow. Only the ground erupting beneath them, pouring out the fragrance of night-blooming flowers.

"If you did take his starseed, you'd tell me and put it back for me, I think?" she said, as if attempting to sweet-talk a recalcitrant child. Maybe the shape of the agent's so-called weapon was influencing her tone. She wished, inwardly, that this damn magic was more effective and reliable than it was, but it was worth a shot, anyway.

Quote:
A short riding whip with a red silk handle, incapable of breaking the skin and causing only blunt force damage. Flowering vines erupt from the ground and reach to about knee-high in a ten foot radius, wrapping around the opponent's legs to slow them down. Although the vines are breakable, the scent of the flowers induces an urge to seek Joy's approval, praise, or affection, although the urge can be fought with active focus. Joy can channel for approximately 35 seconds at this stage.

While she certainly understood why anyone from the White Moon wouldn't believe her, Spectrolite still couldn't help a vague wistful thought. They'd just dealt with the world-ending serpent, and... whatever was beyond it. Gathering energy to prepare for the potential for other threats made sense to her.

She was beginning to debate if she should try throwing the stupid plastic rings at her again when the knight moved a bit closer. Though Spectrolite tried to shuffle back a few steps in response, her space was limited in the narrow alleyway, back against the opposite building when her vision cleared enough to see a streak of dark leather striking through the air.

A squeak left her as she winced, bracing herself for a hit but... it didn't come from where she figured. The cracked, grubby old asphalt broke and crumbled, vines pushing from the smothered earth rapidly and coiling around her legs as she damn near tried to scramble up the wall in her panic. She swung the plastic toy down on some of them, snapping a few of the tendrils, but the sweet scent was... almost calming?

Her eyes moved back to the knight, panic and unease rising. She didn't want to fight her. "I didn't take it. I never touch peoples' starseeds, I swear. I..." A thought occurred, but she wrinkled her nose, not really sure it was the best idea but... "I... could show you? If I remove his starseed just enough to see it, and put it back, that's... really the only way I can think of to prove it. I get you don't have a reason to believe me. I just want to keep my home safe... and that giant snake kinda suggests there's worse out there than just magical aliens."

It was a babble, useless in all likelihood, but she couldn't think of anything else to try and prove herself honest to the knight.

The wheedling tone was swiftly replaced by one of decisiveness. The unfortunate thing about having magic that sometimes made people want to impress you was that "impress you" could mean a lot of things, and not all of them were necessarily in your favor. <******** do not do that," she said firmly. She had no idea if having a starseed yanked and put back was bad for you, but it felt like it must be to your detriment in the longterm, and not worth risking. The agent was babbling; she was either a phenomenal liar or, more likely, telling the truth. It was too much of a bluff to call. "I will choose to take your word for it. Find a better way to keep your home safe," she advised, lowering her whip but with a tension in her arm that suggested that she was still ready to deploy it, if it came down to it. "I'll take care of him."

See? The wince was immediate to that extremely crystal clear--and creative--refusal. Spectrolite certainly felt a level of damned if you do, damned if you don't. Her brows rose, a helpless shrug echoed in her face. "Sorry, it's just... the only way I know of to prove it."

Her lips twisted though, to hear the suggestion, and the maroon-haired woman scowled slightly. "Did you miss the whole energy collection helps protect planet situation we just had? Genuine question, I get the confusion if so," she added in a sigh, realizing she was becoming combative, which helped nothing, ever.

Especially since she was effectively being shooed away. Spectrolite huffed, sending the stupid toy back into subspace and slowly side-stepping away along the wall behind her towards the other end of the alley, away from the street she'd originally entered down. "Never mind. I doubt you care, and I don't have any interest of wasting either of our time."

When more space existed between herself and the knight--and now the passed out dude on the ground--the agent pulled herself away from the wall to walk normally. Away from this mess. Much as it nagged at her...

"You look very beautiful in that, by the way. The dress is gorgeous." It was an aside, a useless commentary as she turned away, shot over her shoulder before she used what level of increased physical strength and jumping height she had in this state to send herself up on top of a low roof. She really didn't want to fight, but she couldn't comprehend how those of the White Moon would still be so huffy over energy collection...... ugh.

And something told her she'd still not have a great night's sleep. ******** all this mess.
