Doggy date day was a day Mel very much looked forward to. Granted it wasn’t a set schedule or anything like that, but they happened often enough and the prospect of the day never failed to keep Mel’s spirits afloat. Especially now, with the end of the world looming overhead and all. The sense of normalcy was just…nice.

Plus, Elaine was fun to be around, and Lulu adored Peticru.

Or at least, it certainly seemed like she did. And Mel loved the nervous little pup, too.

So today, considering the little doggy date was going to be at her place, Mel had gotten up early to make sure her house was nice and clean and ready to welcome their guests. Even Lulu had gotten wiped down and a thorough brushing (which she absolutely enjoyed), and the last thing she did before hopping into the shower was prep a pitcher of iced tea and pull out a fresh batch of cookies (because cookies, but also the smell of baking cookies now hung in the air) and set them aside to cool.

The doorbell went off just as she finished getting dressed, so she hurried to the door and, after checking the camera, flung it wide open, greeting her friend with a beaming smile. Lulu was sitting just at her feet, well-behaved but tippy-tapping ever so slightly with an excited energy, her tail wagging excitedly about behind her.

“Hi!” She paused abruptly, as though a thought just occurred to her, to glance down, and laughed lightly when she spotted her pup. “Come on in, before this one loses it.”

Petitcru was vibrating with an intensity that might be measurable on the richter scale by the time Elaine closed the door and settled her down to the floor, but this was attributable to excitement rather than terror, as the tiny thing immediately instigated a round of zoomies, enticing Lulu to give chase with a series of sneezes and bows.

"Hi yourself," she said, cracking up at the scene unfolding. "Good god, it smells good in here. Tell me that's not just a candle or something. My heart might break."

Lulu didn't need any more than the first sneeze and bow to give chase, and the sight got Mel joining in on the laughter as well, which stopped only once she pulled her friend into a tight hug in greeting.

"A candle would break my heart, too," she said, her laughter now down to just a chuckle as she led the way inside. She dipped into the kitchen and gestured toward the cookies on the cooling rack. "They should be cool now. Help yourself, I'll get the tea. Unless you want water?" A smile settled on her face as she moved about, grabbing the tea pitcher from the refrigerator and a pair of cups from the cupboard. She set them out and doubled back for a couple bottles of water to cover bases. There was an ease about her movements, like it was the first time she was properly relaxed like this in a while.

"So. How ya been? Feels like it's been forever for some reason." Her eyes flickered toward the sliding doors, at the ominous skies outside.

"Girl, I'm from Kentucky. I'm never saying no to iced tea." She flopped down on the couch with the boneless ease that seemed to follow her whether she was at home or elsewhere, a cookie already in hand.

"I've been keeping myself busy - work, you know." She wrinkled her nose expressively. She had never exactly explained what it was she did, but given her lack of inhibition about everything else, that was probably on purpose. And then, taking a bite: "Holy s**t, these are dangerous. Don't let me eat a half a dozen." She paused to move her legs to avoid a zoomies collision. "What've you been up to? Staying out of this awful weather, I hope."

“I baked them for you, what do you mean?” she laughed as she followed Elaine into the living room, setting a tray with the pitcher, glasses, and a plate of cookies down on the coffee table. “I was thinking I’d send you off with whatever we don’t finish here.”

Her expression sobered some as she considered Elaine’s question while she poured their drinks. “I’m trying, but Lulu needs her walks,” she said, scooting one of the glasses toward her before grabbing a cookie for herself and settling back onto the couch. She lifted her legs just in time to dodge the zooming dogs, the sight of which got another little laugh out of her. Going back to the question though…

“But same. Busy with work and school,” she went on with a little shrug. Knighthood alone was keeping her plenty busy, but just because she knew that the world was in danger of ending didn’t mean anyone or anything else in her life did. Work and school carried on as usual, and between the three Mel was perpetually on her toes.

Her phone, which had been sitting quietly on the coffee table, went off just then, too, and glancing at the name on the screen–which popped up two more times while she was looking–got her to audibly sigh.

“Among other things, I guess.” And in a bid to try and move past it as quickly as possible, she chose to ignore the texts and instead turned to Elaine.

“Hey, what do you do for work, anyway?”

“Nothing worth talking about. Hospitality industry,” she said vaguely, glad that she had the excuse of a mouthful of cookie to pursue the idea no further. Elaine hated to lie, but this was not a lie for the purposes of deception, exactly. She herself had no shame about her profession, but she was tactful enough to know that it often made other people uncomfortable - or, worse, made them attempt to get her to tell work stories, unsatisfied until they were digging for specifics, which she looked upon as a betrayal of her obligation to clients: something akin to breaking a confessional seal. Best to avoid the topic for everyone else's sake, if not for her own.

She eyed the phone. “I'm not gonna be offended if you answer those,” she pointed out.

Mel was happy to leave it there if she didn’t want to go into specifics, though because Elaine had so expertly glossed over her question…they were soon back on her phone. Thankfully she also had a mouthful of cookie when Elaine pointed it back out, so had exactly that much time to try and come up with…some kind of excuse not to.

By the time she washed the bite down with tea, though, she had nothing. Which wasn’t surprising; she was an awful liar, white lie or not.

She wrinkled her nose at her phone when it buzzed again, and then heaved another sigh and leaned over to pick it up and sift through the messages. “My ex,” she said, then paused and quickly typed out a response and hit send before continuing, “has been asking about if I have any plans for this summer, after my graduation.”

Ooh. Relationship drama.

She watched her expression as she sent out the quick reply.

“Do you?” She prompted.

Her expression was...annoyed, but somehow affectionately so? If that made any kind of sense. The man had been a constant in her life for years, regardless of their relationship status, so she was used to him being around in whatever capacity, be it a lover, friend, enemy, rival, or whatever other role he'd managed to snag for himself in her life.

"I'm not even sure I'm graduating," she said, snagging another cookie to hopefully give her a way to buy some pauses if this was the topic they were wandering into. "Yet," came a quick correction. "I'm definitely graduating, but not sure if it'll be this year or next. So no plans, and even if I did I'm not sure I wanna share with him. He'll probably try to weasel himself into them somehow, and I'm just..."

Another sigh, this time more a sound of frustration.

It was Elaine's turn to wrinkle her nose.

“Just what?” She prompted again. “Because ‘weasel’ doesn't sound very promising, unless you're inviting the weaseling.”

This, pragmatically, on the basis that while it could never be her, she was aware that some women were amenable to such approaches. Elaine, while she had a great deal of time for simps, beggars, pleaders, pathetic men, and those otherwise coming to her on their knees - provided they were walking around with their heads held high at all other times - had no patience at all for wheedling or weasels. Not everyone in the world, however, had her tastes.

"Can't shake him," she finished after taking her sweet time with eating the cookie she's just picked up. The honest answer never painted her in a good light, and she could only hope that Elaine wouldn't adopt the belief that she was a lost cause when it came to relationships, like all her other friends had. "I've tried, but he's like..." She squirmed a bit in her seat, adjusting her position so her legs were crossed and she was more facing Elaine. "Okay, so my one friend compared him to something called 'opportunistic bacteria' in the human body. Perfectly normal, naturally occurring, but if your immune system goes down that's when it can cause an infection."

She looked away when the sound of squeaking filled the room, a blessed distraction brought on by Lulu nabbing her favorite squeaky toy. Apparently the zoomies had culminated with the pair sifting through Lulu's little toy chest.

"Well. He's kinda like that. I mean, we're still...friends? Sort of. We still talk, I mean. But when I'm not doing well, that's when he actually physically shows up again. He helps me out, gets me back on my feet, and then we wind up..." Another sigh, another vague, almost helpless, gesture with her hands. "Not together, but basically. And then eventually he's just gone again. Busy with work, some other girl, whatever. Lather, rinse, repeat."

She absently reached for another cookie. "And I don't invite him, he just literally shows up at my door."

Her expression had grown increasingly grim, and when Petitcru trotted up with a pilfered toy, she didn't even look down before taking it and throwing it, resulting in the scuttle of both dogs in animated pursuit. She kept her eyes fixed on Mel, instead, with an expression of skeptical judgment.

“So don't open the damn door,” she suggested flatly. She took a swig of tea like it had personally offended her. “Tell him - through the door - to ******** back off to his petri dish.”

Well, any hopes that Elaine might be less judgey were probably unfounded. There was a certain mercilessness in her tone.

Sharp as it came off, Mel couldn't help the smile.

"I don't know why I always wind up opening it," she eventually sighed again after blasting through another cookie. Three was plenty--she baked these for Elaine! So after that and polishing off her glass of tea and grabbed a pillow and sank into the couch. "I've told him things along that line before, but he's persistent and I've always wound up caving."

It was Lulu's turn to walk up with a toy, so Mel again took the distraction and watched as the two scampered away.

"Historically, anyway." She unlocked her phone and tossed it in Elaine's direction. It was open to her message history with him, in case she wanted to see. "Text is easy, but in person...I dunno. I guess I'm just a lot weaker."

Her face grew increasingly grim as she scrolled.

“I'm not hitting send, don't worry. Unlike some of your friends I'm not interested in making decisions for you,,” she said as she suddenly began typing, her fingers flying with the speed of someone who spent a lot of time texting. She turned the screen towards Mel, pointing at the text sitting in the outbox, a tap away from being dispatched into the ether.

I have told you repeatedly that I don't want to see you again. I meant it. This friendship has run its course. You have zero respect for my boundaries and I'm not going to tolerate your disrespect anymore. If you show up at my door I'm calling the cops.

She gave her a flat look, hoisting the phone towards her.

“And then when he does, you call the cops. It's not hard. There is no d**k in the world worth this bullshit.”

It wasn't easy, either, of course. But Elaine never thought that way.

She caught it and reread the message a few times before hitting send. At this point it couldn't hurt, and she did want to quit him. Sooner would be best, but she'd take being able to see a light at the end of the proverbial tunnel. Eventually the ball would wind up back in her court, when he inevitably showed up at her doorstep and she would either do as promised in this text or not. For the moment, she entertained the thought of actually being able to.

"He'll know it isn't me," she said, expression akin to a dog tucking tail. She wasn't normally so lacking in confidence, but everyone had their weaknesses. "Not that it matters, but I'm just saying. He might show up sooner because of that. Who knows what state I'll be in then, so you might get some random text to ask for backup or something when he does show up."
