She wanted to give him everything.
Namely: children.
She had never thought of herself as a mother, especially - children were so loud and so messy - but with Vira? It seemed so natural. So obvious it was barely worth discussing.
Vira was patient and respectful, of course, and Ruby was keenly aware that he already had daughters with his former mate (at least it was with a former mate, and not some...random mare, Ruby thought, in her more uncharitable moments). She didn't want to rush him, or force anything upon him or his daughters; she wanted his daughters to like her, if not love her (someday). She didn't want them to think of her as an interloper, and she never wanted to take their father from them.
It had occurred to her recently, though, that she hadn't really....asked...Vira himself if he wanted more children. As obvious as it seemed to her, it might not be so self-evident to him. If he didn't...well, she loved him, and she would simply do her best to be the best secondary mother to his daughters as she could (and, she reminded herself, that way she would get to skip the mess part).
Never one to shrink from fear, Ruby approached her mate one evening, after meals were over and jobs had been done, and nuzzled lightly against him. She would ask him his thoughts tonight, one way or the other, and then once they were on the same page...she could start making the appropriate arrangements immediately.
Immediately.

He knew what was on her mind. Or at least, he thought he did. He'd had children twice, with two different mares, and he's begun to recognize the look in the eyes when a mare is thinking about it. He wasn't really surprised by it this time, in fact he felt ready for once. The first time was a mess, a political affair that left him separated from two of his daughters for most of their lives. He doesn't even know them and it causes a deep ache in his heart. They're happy though in their other herd, and that has to be enough. Besides, he had Tocapo, his only Son, here with him. Their relationship was strained, but it was something. The second round of parenthood Vira had felt more ready for. He was mated then and had felt settled enough to try to make a family. He was still fairly new to actually raising children, as he had only raised Tocapo before. Raising three daughters at once was a whole other affair he was ill equipped to handled, though his mate had been there too. That had been a big help, and a lot of fun if he was honest. It hadn't felt so at the time but looking back there were a lot of fun amidst the chaos of raising multiple children at once. While his previous mate has gone, he was newly settled once more and felt ready to try again for the whole family thing. He could see new little hooves running around, hear the laughter and the crying. He nodded to himself, solidifying his own desire to be a father again. The best thing he ever did was become a father, and with Tocapo and Brigette still in the herd with him he could see new kids with his lovely new mate as only a good thing. He wanted a big family, just like the one he and his 5 brothers came from.
He would tell Ruby all of this. He would open himself to her and let her know his heart. He felt like he could do that with her easily. She had a way about her that seemed to mend the broken things about him. He loved that about her.
When she came to him that night and nuzzled into him the air was heavy with the topic lingering in their thoughts but yet unsaid. He let the silence linger a while, nuzzling into her as well, breathing in her scent and enjoying her closeness. Finally he decided to break the silence. "What's on your mind tonight my love?"
