Diaboleite was getting very good at ignoring the looming presence of someone from the other side while he was draining energy. Some of them were bold enough to approach, some flitted off, and either way, he got what he needed.

Tonight, he'd chosen a park that lay between a bustling shopping street and a quiet strip of townhomes; plenty of people cut through it on their way from one to the other, and it had gotten him quite a bit of energy, just wandering among crowds and bumping into them as he went. And as the night had worn on, he'd gotten bolder; with less people, there was more time to spend draining single ones.

His current victim was mostly unconscious, sitting on a bench, and Diaboleite stood behind him, drawing the last scraps of what he could. A fine finish to a very productive night.

The problem was that while Elaine - Joy - had never had much of a heroic streak, she did, in fact, have a basically-functional moral compass.

Her plan had been to sort of skirt by the energy signature - scoping it out, as it were, from a safe-ish distance and get ready to bolt. That had been the plan, until she had been confronted with the ugly reality of a civilian being drained - something she was by now familiar with but had not, in fact, witnessed firsthand.

She could still run. For a horrible moment she considered it. No one would ever know but her. But maybe that was the worst possible person to know.

Perhaps it was a foregone conclusion that she would try to do something. God knows that everything, nowadays, felt like a foregone conclusion.

"Hey," she yelled, trying to sound aggressive and mostly managing to sound loud. She took a step nearer, although she was still very much across the sidewalk for the moment. "What the ******** do you think you're doing?"

Ah. This was one of those.

Not one of the ones that smartly turned away, or questioned, or otherwise did something reasonable about their suspicions towards him. No, this Page--he was fairly certain it was a Page, though he was still learning the various ways that energy signatures felt and what they indicated--was definitely trying to puff herself up.

So, with a sigh, he took a last little bit of energy and tucked the ball away into subspace.

"My job," he said, deadpan. "You look old enough to understand what that means, unlike some of your compatriots I've met."

Honestly, this was getting old. He walked around the bench, considering closing the distance and making her regret her interference. Perhaps that would teach her not to interrupt the next time she ran across an officer.

She did not back away, but it was a near thing. It was an even nearer thing that she did, in fact, step towards him instead. She was still unclear on how any of this worked and unsure if she should be somehow inserting herself between him and the civilian, although it looked like she'd arrived too late to be much help there.

"And you look old enough to know that your job is s**t," she observed, feeling around until her fingers closed around the whistle hanging from her shoulder - the only flimsy thing standing between her and disaster, most of the time. "Maybe consider, I don't know, cleaning toilets or something else that's actually respectable and contributes to society."

Ah, yes. There it was. None of these fools understood. But of course they wouldn't; they were tied up in morality, in the deep and assured feeling that whatever Chaos did was wrong. That it was inherently bad and harmful to take energy, that therefore it was wrong to do so. A naive, foolish perspective, as far as Diaboleite was concerned.

Sometimes harm was necessary. There were winners and losers in the world, and you did not become one of the people who came out on top if you weren't willing to step on other people along the way. If you weren't willing to do some harm, as it were, for a greater goal. Enduring a lecture from someone who was so deeply certain that they knew better was always going to be a pain, but it was one he would simply have to be willing to endure for as long as he did this.

"Charming," he said, and he was glad for his magically increased speed to close the distance and swing a fist for her face.

Let her learn this lesson physically, as seemed to be necessary.

When blown, the whistle can disorient all opponents within fifteen feet. The whistle can be used once per day and effects should be discussed with your RP partner before use, but can include dizziness, nausea, headaches, and temporary deafness, any of which can linger upon player desire. Anyone who is not considered hostile will not hear any noise when the whistle is blown.

Her life had not always been iced coffee and red-bottom heels and expensive little rhinestone-studded sweaters for an extravagantly-pampered dog. She had had her fair share of gritty life experience, ranging from the exotic to the mundane. She liked to think of herself as being fairly worldly and jaded.

But in the tapestry of her experience, getting solidly punched was a new one. She tried to dodge, but it was only partly a success, and her jaw ended up catching most of the blow, which wasn't much of an improvement.

She stumbled back a couple of steps, stunned by this abrupt meeting with reality. She then discovered that between fight or flight, she was, tragically, more fight than she would have wanted to be.

"You little a*****e," she hissed, although talking already sort of hurt, and would undoubtedly hurt more later. "I need that face for making money!" She was launching back towards him, not with any particular finesse or even power, but with the sort of catlike, scrabbling clawing you might get from two women engaged in a drunk bar fight that neither would remember the next day. This would probably have been wholly ineffectual, had she not first put the whistle into her mouth and given it a blow. It would probably be wholly ineffectual anyway.

Generally, Diaboleite was not one for throwing punches. It was almost startling to have landed one so well, and maybe that moment of hesitation was going to cost him, because it was plenty of time for the Page to react, to start fighting back.

"Don't pick fights you can't finish," he sneered, and the very act of it made him feel sort of slimily villainous. The piercing shriek of whatever whistle she was carrying, though--that actually made him stagger.

Diaboleite, generally, was really only a social drinker--a few glasses of wine with dinner, a cocktail at a function. He very, very rarely got drunk, and this reminded him of why, because the sudden onset of dizzying nausea was all too reminiscent of a hangover.

While he could bring up an arm to defend himself from her scrabbling catscratch, it came up slower than he would have liked, and his suit uniform only provided so much protection.

s**t. He might have gotten in for more than he bargained for, in the most embarrassing way possible.

There was, unfortunately, something very satisfying in this. Maybe it was her latent white trash roots. But she did what any self-respecting woman in a drunk catfight would do, even if it might actually backfire and leave him an opening to either landing another blow or escaping.

She had no plans for what she would do after it, was the problem. She wasn't exactly attempting any sort of victory. She was simply propelled by a nasty Nashville White Girl Bachelorette Brawler instinct that said: pull out his extensions.

So she, without dignity but with a definite amount of fury, tried to grab a fistful of hair to yank on.

It occurred to her that people had actually paid her for that. Probably saying so out loud would be a bad idea. "Speak for yourself," she hissed.

It had definitely been a very long time since anyone grabbed Diaboleite's hair and yanked. It came partially out of its neat ponytail, and being jerked around did not help with the dizziness he was experiencing--if anything, it made it worse.

He didn't exactly have the brawling instinct, but he knew enough to know that there were a lot of sensitive things center mass--and tugged in this close, it was an easy shot. So he aimed his elbow for her gut, hoping to knock the wind out of her and get her to let go long enough for him to make a staggering and slightly embarrassing retreat. <******** magic. A bullshit equalizer.

It worked. Had it not been for the bullshit equalizer she probably would have been the one making tracks, and quite a while ago, and so it didn't take much for her to stagger back, trying to suck air into her lungs and looking more offended than anything.

She did not make any attempt at pursuit. She stood for a moment on the sidewalk, attempting to process what had just happened, and then turned to the unconscious civilian without a single clue of how to help them. Following instincts had worked pretty well for her so far, she reasoned.

"Yeah, run like a little b***h!" she yelled back over her shoulder, or at least tried to, although it came out in more of a broken wheeze as she bent double. The attempt caused a pang in both her jaw and her lungs, and she amended her assessment of her own performance.

Well enough, anyway.
