Over the summer, Ella had been having something of an internal debate. Before they went on their trip to Milan, and again before New York, Mom and Linsey had had to help with the seemingly impossible task of managing Ella's long hair. She felt increasingly guilty that it seemed to be something she simply couldn't do on her own. Linsey kept her own hair tidy, but Ella's always seemed to be a mess. Naturally, the younger brunette had to figure out what to do. She wrote a letter to Declan - now Alice - about her dilemma, especially since she'd gone from very short hair to very long hair. Apparently, Ella had done the same, though she never remembered having short hair. Serghei had mentioned it to her. Maybe since her birth mother kept her hair so short....?
After a lot of waffling about what to do, Ella quietly asked mom about setting up an appointment. Maybe cutting off some of the tangled mess would be helpful? It should be easier to maintain... and maybe help her not look so much like a tumbleweed. Thankfully the woman agreed, then set up a special appointment at a new shop in Diagon. Apparently the shopkeep offered visits that would be quieter and less... overwhelming. On paper, it seemed perfect for Ella.
The morning of her appointment, Ella dressed in something a little more colorful than her usual clothes. Maybe a big haircut should require some floral clothes? It was still scary, but holding mom's hand made it a teeny bit less scary. Once they made it to the shop, all of Ella's worries piled up again and she immediately pulled her hair over her eyes to hide. Maybe this was a super bad idea! But mom was signing her in, so it was too late to run... right?

It had been a busy few weeks, and for that, Finley was grateful. He'd been worried that Diagon wouldn't get as much business... though the summer months he should've known better. The real test would be the school months, but there was only one way to find out. That morning, the shop had been mostly booked out for a single client, which was fine, given Zoe was needing a lot more time to rest with how pregnant she was.
He flipped to his schedule, seeing that he was doing a lot of services, though most were educational. Usually that was reserved for younger kids, but from what he'd gathered, the girl had gone through a rather traumatic past. Well, if he could help, that would be something he'd be glad to do. When he heard the shop bell chime, Finley pushed to his feet and closed his ledger. Stepping out of his office, he saw the woman and her daughter... and oh it did look like her hair was something of a mess.
"Hi there. You must be Ella and Hannah. I'm Finley, and I'm going to be helping you out today. Do you already have an idea what you want your hair to look like when we're all done?" The girl (didn't Hannah previously say she was 14? She looked 10... at best) looked up at the woman, then shook her head. Hannah explained that she was looking to cut off some of the length, as well as handle some of the tangled mess. "That's definitely something we can do. Come on, Miss Ella. We'll start with washing your hair and go from there, okay?"
Thankfully, the girl followed after him. He was really hoping for no tears today. He helped her climb up into the chair by the sink, then explained what all he was doing. "We're just going to start with shampoo, conditioner, and a nice detangler, okay? And let me know if the water is too cool or warm. I want you to be super comfortable." He sent a small smile over toward the girl, who was shaking like a leaf on a windy day. "O-okay. I-I can do that." Well... at least he'd gotten her to speak....
After a nice hair wash (and getting Ella to talk a bit more!), Finley worked with a detangling brush and a bit with his matting brush to get her hair tidy. "Alright, it's time for the big steps, okay? Let's go over here to my station and we'll work on getting your pretty hair cut. Did you have an idea of how much you wanted to remove, or did you maybe need some help deciding?" He offered a hand to help the girl back to the ground, then led her to his station and lowered the chair there. She was just so small!
"I... was thinking shorter, b-but not too short. I like having pretty hair, but i-if it's too long, it's always just a mess." Okay, so not the most helpful... but nevermind. Finley had worked with worse. "What if we go about shoulder length? Still long enough to put up if you want, but not long enough to be as much to deal with. I know long hair is so tricky to maintain. My little sister has hair about as long as yours now, and she spends ages on it." She still looked nervous, but she did nod, so that was something.
"And we can trim out your fringe as well, maybe help get it out of those pretty eyes of yours?" Another nod, though this one was accompanied by a small smile. "Alright, well, let's get started. If at any point you need a break, you can either tell me to stop or just hold out your hand, okay? And if we get the cut done and you don't much like it, just let me know honestly and we can fix it up."
After an agreement, Finley put his hairdressing cape over the small girl and grabbed his shears. Hopefully she wouldn't panic or run away like some of the others. She seemed resolved, if a bit terrified. With a small nod from the girl, Finley set to work. So much of her hair would have to go just from damage, so hopefully she didn't mind losing quite a large bit. As they worked, they did have to take a couple breaks, but after getting her some water and having quiet chats about the jazz music playing, she seemed to gain her courage again. After a bit over an hour, Finley finished with the cut. "Alright. We're almost there. I've got the cutting done and now is just to dry it the rest of the way and I'll style it for today. What do you think about the length?" He helped her look in the standing mirror beside her, hoping for the best.
"I... really like it. It's not heavy either." Yes! He got an approval, and judging by her smile and curious looks, she genuinely liked it. "So good! Let's get you all finished up so you can go show your mum." Once she agreed and sat back down, Finley grabbed his brush and hair dryer, setting to work. It was a really basic style, especially since she seemed to struggle with maintenance. As he did that, he guided her through the products to use. Shampoo and conditioner in the bath, then detangler in her still-wet hair. After that, she should brush it out with the detangle brush and style it up. He even spent a few extra moments teaching her a few basic updos that she could do on her own. He just really hoped he'd helped her confidence a bit.

As Ella was moved from the little sink bath thing to the haircutting chair, she felt her heart thrumming in her ears. This was such a scary thing to do! Of course, she didn't want to tell Mister Finley that this was her first time getting a real haircut. He was very kind and quite patient, which she very much appreciated. It definitely helped that the lights were dimmed and there was nice, calm music playing. It seemed to take forever, but they did take breaks and he was very good about talking her through everything he did.
She watched cautiously as the length of her hair fell away, a weight both physical and metaphorical lifted off her chest. When it was all done, she couldn't help but seeing a different person in the mirror. She was still wet, but she also looked less... pitiful than she previously had. It would take some getting used to, but she was also glad for a new phase of life. Back in the chair, she let herself be dried off and styled. Finley even practiced how to put her hair up a few ways, so now she wouldn't need to ask Linsey or Tàmhas to handle it. Something so simple helped her feel more like an actual teenager with some sort of autonomy. Was this how all her friends felt all the time?
Once she was all done, Ella glanced up toward the front where Mom was probably still waiting. Something was holding her back, her feet not wanting to move forward. She looked beside her to see Finley having leaned down a bit. "Hey, my little legend, do you need a hand to hold? I know she's going to be so excited, but sometimes the steps are hard to come by. What do you say?" He offered a hand, and with a deep breath, Ella set hers in his. With only a few short steps, they were in the lobby, where Ella sent a nervous look over. For the first time in a long time, Ella looked a bit proud, and her normally frail voice came out a little louder. (not... too much louder, but hey) "H-hey Mum. I did it!" She could feel tears in her eyes, but she also couldn't help the smile on her face either. This was such a big moment for her.

Today was the day that they were going to go school shopping and Benji was excited to finally get to go to the magical school. Not that he hated his Muggle school, but he was really excited for Hogwarts, especially after all the things Mom had told him about it. What he wasn't excited for was taking the trip to Diagon with Liv in tow as well. Naturally she'd wanted to be loud and excitable about the whole thing and Benji just... wanted to shop in peace. But they were set to meet up with Roxie and when the two of them got together... well, the whole thing was a headache. But against his wishes, Mom had agreed to the plan where all of them would go shopping together. He wondered if Roxie's brother and niece were more level headed than his sister and her bestie. Over their morning breakfast, Liv was loudly talking to her mom about how their first songs were already doing well on the streaming platforms. Benji had just rolled his eyes and ate his brekky in peace. But now they were finally in the Alley and Benji could feel a little of the excitement coursing through him. As they opened the door to the shop, Benji turned to Mom and asked, "Can we go to the bookstore first? I heard they have some D&D books there and I need to get the newest two." Liv sighed heavily and idly said, "Ugh, snooze fest." When she spotted her blonde best friend, Liv exclaimed, "Rox! We're at over a thousand streams already!" She practically ran into the shop to show Roxie the screen grab of her phone that showed them as up and coming artists.

Tsia was super-duper extra excited for today. Not only did they get to hang out with Auntie Roxie all day but they also got to go school shopping! It was pretty awesome that she was finally able to do up her Hogwarts shopping. Currently she and Coty were waiting at Dad's salon for the day to get started in full. They were apparently getting to shop with Roxie's friend and bandmate Liv, plus her brother, who was in Tsia's year! As the girls waited over a game of Go Fish, Roxie stepped in. "Hey Rox, come on in. Your friends haven't made it yet."
"That's cool. They should be here any minute, then we can go." Tsia hopped up and hurried over to give her aunt a hug. "I hope they're here soon 'cause I'm ready to get out there and get stuff!" Coty, with a bit of help from dad, cleaned up the cards then hurried over to join a hug with Roxie. And then the shop bell chimed and they all looked over that way. They were talking about the bookstore, which Tsia was excited to peruse as well. Liv shut it down, earning a scoff from Roxie. "Don't be mean, Liv. Just because you don't use any of your books doesn't mean no one does." Her voice held a teasing note, but Tsia knew that sparkle in her eyes.
"I saw that! We can maybe get Jo and do some pictures or videos for socials. Gotta give Benson material to work with, right?" She laughed, nudging Liv with an elbow. At the same time, Tsia opted to go meet her soon-to-be classmate. "Hiya! Tsia Archer-Knapp. According to Auntie Roxie, we're both gonna be first years this year. Are you as excited as I am?" Somewhere behind her she heard dad chortle before helping make sure Coty had her inhaler in her bag. "Alright, everyone got everything? Are we ready to roll out?" He squat down so the redhead could hop up and piggy-back ride. It was well and good, since she tended to get out of breath pretty easily.

Liv scoffed and did a mock look of offense when Roxie stated that Olivia didn't use her textbooks, then said, "I do to use mine... Sometimes I write lyrics in the pages and rip them out to stuff in my notebook." Benji winced a little when his sister said that she was ripping pages out of a book. But they were her books, not his. He didn't even like to highlight things in his books. They had to be pristine. Then they were off talking about the band again. Liv had practically screamed when she first learned that their first few songs were gaining in popularity. Her and Benson had a shared freakout that had gone on for half the day yesterday. The girl he assumed to be Tsia came over and introduced herself, then asked if he was excited to be going to school. "Heya, I'm Benjamin Scott-Wright. Benji is cool though. And yeah, I'm pretty stoked to be going to school. I heard they have a D&D club, that's pretty cool." Liv had referred to it as a dork club, but she was also in the fencing club, and he thought that was pretty dorky. "Hey, are you afraid of frogs?" He waited for a confirmation that she was not before he pulled his green tree frog from his pocket. "His name is Gandalf. Mum said we can bring frogs to school as pets so I'm bringing him with me. We need to get him a smaller terrarium though." Benji wasn't usually this excitable, but with school shopping and whatnot, his energy levels were pretty high.

Tsia giggled when Roxie looked disgusted by Liv's reply to using her books for music notes. "You know good and well that's not what I meant! Your poor books must hate you!" Roxie seemed used to her friend's behavior, but it didn't stop a small admonishment by the youngest in the room. "It's not nice to tear up your books! They like having all their insides." Coty huffed softly, thinking how upset she would be if someone harmed one of her books. She wasn't allowed to play sports like Tsia, so she often found herself hiding in a book.
While the older girls were bickering about music, Tsia turned her attention back to Benjamin, or rather, Benji. "I heard that too! Not to mention a bunch of other fun ones. Apparently there's even one where you get to meet all the magical animals! It sounds super fun. Plus also there's Quidditch, and I can't wait to play." She grinned, looking happy to try all the new things. Her train of thought was interrupted by Benji asking if she was afraid of frogs. "Nope! As long as they don't hop on my face or something. They're pretty cool." She was surprised when he pulled out a frog from his pocket. "How long was he in there? He's a pretty nice fellow. I have a burrowing owl called Mister Mango. He's at home asleep probably."
"I like frogs too! They're weird, slimy guys, but they can be super colorful. I have a book on frogs at home with all kinds of 'em!" The younger girl said, hurrying over to Tsia's side. Neither of the younger girls noticed their dad chuckle and look over at Benji's mum. Apparently he was amused by the conversation. Or at least he wasn't listening to the older girls discuss music.

Olivia shrugged when first Roxie, then her smaller niece, both admonished her for ripping pages out of the textbook when she wrote her lyrics on them. "I mean, it's not like I'm ripping pages out of the alive textbook. That one's probably the only safe book." She shrugged again, remembering in third year when the Care of Magical Creatures textbook bit her. Ooh, she wanted to chuck it out of the Astronomy Tower after that. Benji chuckled a little when Roxie and Coty were teasing Liv for her textbook treatment, then grinned over at Tsia when she commented on the other clubs as well as Quidditch. "Just don't mention playing Quidditch around my sister. She was notoriously bad at it." He chuckled, then added, "I'm not very good at physical stuff, but I definitely want to try out for the team anyway. Hope I'm not as bad as Liv though." The older sibling stuck out her tongue at her brother then huffed. It was weird that he was teasing her. Liz gravitated over to Finley and crossed her arms over her chest before huffing a little. "The children are so excitable. It is a big day for them though."
Benji chuckled a little when Tsia seemed concerned about Gandalf being in his pocket, then said, "There's a lot of space in there and he's not very big. Mister Mango is a cute name for an owl. I'm not a big fan of mangoes because they taste weird. But I'm sure you didn't name him after the fruit though, probably the color, right?" Benji hoped he hadn't insulted, like, her favorite fruit or something. It'd be bad to insult someone he just met. It'd be bad to insult anyone, but especially someone he just met.
Liam had always been the early bird in his relationship with Scarlett. Both in the sleep sense, but also he had always been one step ahead. One look at Scarlett and he knew he was going to follow her around the world. Even now, in a Hyde Park townhouse he wasn't exactly fond of, it needed more maintenance than a Chevy Vega, he was still content to dote on his wonderful wife.
Granted, reading the text from his father saying to brace himself because 'your daughter did the unthinkable. She is a Gryffindor,' made him chuckle into the second cup of coffee. Today started one of the longest weeks he has managed every year. It was time for the Daily's Semi-annual shop review. Today was his first day working on writing an exceptional review list of all of the best shops in Diagon Alley. Next week was going to be Nocturn Alley, and then finally, he could go over to Hogsmead to finish up his article.
While the article would be posted as he finished the reviews, the first part was due later that day, and he already felt like he had wasted too much time that morning, but that was just a daunting list staring at him. Hearing Jeremy's meow followed by the shower starting is what finally got him moving. With Scarlet now up and the cat on the prowl to make Liam sneeze with his adorable, fluffy paws, the only part of him with any fur.
With one last sigh, he apparated out of the townhouse and ended up in Diagon Alley. One look at the list and he found his first shop.
Cutting Edge Hair Salon wasn't the first on his list, but it was the closest to the place he appeared at, so he might as well start there. This way, he might be able to have lunch at one of the restaurants, so he could kill two birds with one stone and avoid some of the rush. With his luck, that wasn't going to happen, but he could hope.
Walking into the salon, he put on his award-winning smile. To the first person to approach, all he said was, "Hi, I'm Liam McFallon. I'm writing the Prophet's semi-annual shop review. I'm looking for the owner. I just have a couple of questions."
Finley had been awoken earlier than usual, thanks to a coughing fit from Coty's room. After pushing on his glasses, he'd half-sprinted across their apartment, carefully helping the sleepy redhead sit up and work through a treatment on her nebulizer. Her asthma was hard to deal with some days, but he would also do anything for his little girl. Once she'd felt better, the redhead had just flopped against him, being particularly clingy. Usually while he worked she would go to Scouts for the day, but the days that were a little rougher, she usually opted to stick close to her parents. Since Chadwick had work as well, that meant she'd be coming along with him.
Once they got dressed for the day, Finley scooped Coty into his arms, holding her and her stuffie bird, which often went along with her. The duo apparated into the shop, then walked around making sure everything was set up for the day. After everything was ready, Finley set the redhead down on the comfy bench in front of the window and wrapped her in a soft yellow blanket kept in his office for just these occasions. Standing at the front desk, Finley worked on making sure their schedule was all set up. They didn't have anyone in this morning, so perhaps he'd have time to sneak to the coffee shop...
But then the bell above the door chimed. "Someone's here, Daddy!" came a small voice, which caused Finley to grin softly. "Good morning. Welcome to Cutting Edge." He leaned forward a bit as the man spoke up, introducing himself as a writer for the Daily Prophet. How interesting. "Well, you're in luck. That's me. Finley Archer-Knapp. Nice to meet you, Liam. And come right on in. I've got some time this morning." Well, there went his coffee. Dark eyes looked down when he felt an arm around him, a small smile on his lips. "This is my youngest daughter, Coty. She decided to come help at work today too." She offered a small wave, looking warily at the man.

Liam couldn't help but chuckle at the little girl who ran to her dad when he walked in. While Liam was only around his daughter during the holidays, Scarlett was still not ready to take over the role of parent. It was nice to see some men who handled the role with ease. Liam was extra grateful that her father was also the owner; it always made his week so much easier when he got to the right person on the right try.
He bent down to Coty and smiled at the little girl, addressing her like the boss first. "Well, it is lovely to meet such a hard-working stylist like you today." He offered Finley his hand with a second smile. "She is perfectly fine, I'm a father as well. My daughter just got into Hogwarts, granted, she is the first Gryffindor in the family in a few generations. My mother is beside herself right now." He laughed before pulling out a blue pen with a laugh. While most reporters used Quick Quotes Quills, he had always preferred pen on paper. There was something so personal about writing out his thoughts, then coming back to his notes to write his article. That was probably why they had offered him this review rather than some of the more notable writers.
"Sorry about dropping in like this, The Prophet likes to see what a day in the life actually looks like." Liam started his survey of the shop owner as well as the shop, noticing nothing out of place. "Do you mind if I look around the shop? This review is a maximum of 500 words, and I just want to do your shop justice. You opened this place recently, right? So, newer?" Liam took in the clean and bright interior with a rustic feel. He also enjoyed the plants around the room to give it more of a homey feel. "What made you want to open this shop?
Liam continued to survey the room as he waited for the owner to talk, noticing a small area of face masks. He smiled when he thought that Scarlett might like one. She wasn't much of a skin care person, but she always complained when her face was dry after spending all evening outside. He had been given a small stipend to spend at the shops, so that he could understand pricing and product quality better, so this was going to be the perfect opportunity for something like this. When the owner was done talking about opening the shop, he finally found the courage to ask. "My wife is very into astronomy and complains that her skin and hair are dry. Do you have any product recommendations?"
Who: Finley and Coty Where: Cutting Edge Salon Article: Semi-annual shop review OOC: xxx
Watching as Coty studied the man from Finley's side, the man wondered why his shop had been chosen. Typically when things like this happened, every shop knew about them. Well, that was true of Hogsmeade, but they were also a lot smaller of a community. He couldn't help but grin when Liam gave Coty the most important greeting. "I work super extra hard!" She grinned, looking quite excited. When he directed attention back to Finley, he nodded. Apparently he had a young first year too. "I've also got a first year this year. Tsia got sorted into Slytherin, which was my husband's house." He set a hand on Coty's shoulder as the redhead leaned against his hip.
He apologized for dropping in, and Finley shrugged. "Sure thing. I don't have any appointments for an hour or so." Finley gestured to allow the man deeper into the shop. He listened to the question, squatting down for a moment so Coty could hop up on his back. She still wasn't feeling the best, and days like that he always did his best to make sure she didn't have to exert too much. Last time they'd tested limits, they'd ended up at the hospital for a couple days. "Absolutely. Feel free to look around. It is really new, only about eighteen months or so."
When he'd been asked about why he opened the shop, he hadn't been expecting a different person to answer. "It's 'cause grampa has a salon too!" Coty offered, her little feet wiggling against Finley's hips. "That's true. My dad owns the salon in Hogsmeade, and I spent some of my happiest summers there. I tried out a career in music and it was fun, but I've always been more of a homebody. I went through a lot in life, and working somewhere I can go home to my girls every night became more important. Though they do get to listen to me play." He chuckled over the last words, with Coty nodding happily.
As they walked around, Finley explained things, hoping he was being helpful. Once they were over near the display of products, he was a little surprised when the man asked about his wife. "Well, while I would normally say the best way to know is for me to see it in person, I typically go with this deep moisture hair masks. Once a week or so, after a normal wash, she'd put this in and leave it sit for about half an hour before rinsing it out. If it's extra dry, that could even be an hour or two. And for skincare, I'd be better off referring you over to Blood Moon Bath & Beauty. Nani, the owner, makes everything by hand. She'd be absolutely the best person to ask. They even offer spa day packages." He grinned, thinking that it would be better to make sure he got an accurate answer. "Miss Nani gave me a bath bomb that made rainbows! It was so funky!" Coty giggled, glad that Dad had made friends with lots of the shop owners. "If your wife likes astronomy, I know they have a few lines that are lunar and constellation themes. It would probably make for a really cool gift."
