Erytheia felt the oddness again when he transformed tonight. He still could not feel his wonder. But his weapon summoned just as it always had. The knight was in one of Destiny City’s many parks. He needed to clear his head. Why couldn’t he go to his wonder? And what could be the cause? It was then that he felt a youma’s presense. He tracked it to a nearby tree. It was high up. But that was no matter for the knight of Cosmos’s weapon — a wooden bow. Erytheia summoned his magic and bent the bow, a magical string appearing with a magic arrow. He aimed. He fired…. His weapon suddenly became brittle and snapped in half! The starlit arrow flew off into the distance. The bird-like youma took that as its opportunity to fly well out of reach of the now unarmed knight. “My weapon!”He gasped and stared down at this bow — now in two pieces. ✪

Nalanda could not give up being a Knight, but he couldn’t deny that his current frustration was making this a particularly daunting task. His staff had always been sturdy and well made, and he’d found great comfort in brushing his thumb across its textured knots as he patrolled. He didn’t need the walking stick, but it was a reassuring presence no less.
It had broken three times tonight. Once, when the tip found a small hole in the asphalt and it splintered as if he’d beaten it against a brick wall, once when it disintegrated into sand, and once more when all of the trinkets had melted right off, and the wood seemed to wither in on itself.
Naturally, Nalanda was perplexed–more so, because when he attempted to visit his Wonder and make sure there wasn’t some correlation, he couldn’t even get up there.
It didn’t help that he was having a hard time sensing energy signatures, and the voice he heard nearby did not line up with how far away he thought the Knight signature should have been.
He saw something fly into the sky but it didn’t even register that it might have been a youma, and thinking too hard about trying to pick up the energy signatures just gave him a headache.
“Are you all right?” he called, stepping into view just afterwards. He saw the splintered bow and observed it with confusion, even as his own weapon seemed to twist into itself a bit more. It had lost nearly a foot of height and the wood was no longer a rich brown but was instead faded and brittle.

Erytheia hadn’t even sensed the energy signature of the other knight. It was as if this aura sensing abilities simply hadn’t activated. It wasn’t until Nalanda was in his view that he even noticed. How could he not have noticed a fellow knight of Cosmos? “Yes. I’m … fine.” He looked at himself, almost expecting something to have broken on his uniform, too. “But my weapon seems to have shattered. That’s never happened before.”He now held what was nothing more than a glorified stick in his left hand. “I’m sorry. I didn’t introduce myself. I’m Erytheia.”✪

“Oh–it’s fine, I didn’t either. I’m Nalanda, it’s nice to meet you.”
Not so much under these circumstances, but better to have misfortune with someone who could watch your back, at least. “I was wondering if something was going on.”
Nalanda was small man, mousy and polite. There was a warmth about him that was presently dimmed with worry, not just for himself but for Erytheia as well.
“Mine’s been giving me difficulty, too,” he explained, and gestured towards the particularly gnarled staff. It looked like he was moving debris more than wielding some ancient magical artifact.
“I’m guessing you don’t know what might have caused this?”

“It is nice to meet a fellow knight of Cosmos. Though I wish it was at a better time. Given whatever just happened to our weapons.”He gestured to the broken bow in his hands and the other knight’s staff. Erytheia could see that its color had faded. Was it brittle like this own wooden weapon? Would it break, too? “What else has happened to your staff?” He moved closer to examine it. “I do not know what has caused this. I had trouble get to my wonder before. It might be connected to the state of our weapons.”✪

When Erytheia leaned in to examine his staff, Nalanda presented it for examination. He didn’t know if the other Knight would have any better luck with finding out what was making it malfunction, but if they were both suffering from the same ailments…
“That would make sense,” he said reluctantly. “I thought, perhaps, that my Wonder was just a bit further away than usual. I gave myself a headache when I tried to go up so I stopped pushing.”
The issues he’d had as a Knight were usually few and far between, so this anomaly was just a bit unnerving. A malfunction once in a blue moon surely wasn’t too bad?
…But that others were having the same issue…
“I’ve had to dismiss it and resummon it a few times. I’ve splintered it, it’s turned to dust, and now,” he nodded to its current state. “It looks a bit pitiful, I think. It’s usually much more beautiful. It’s been under far worse strain in the past, it’s never been so fragile. It’s only just started happening tonight, though. Never before.”

“So you had trouble, too? Mine tends to wander, as well. But I haven’t been able to travel there no matter how hard I try.”He sighed as he looked from Nalanda’s staff to his own bow — one twisted in on itself, the other broken in two. This was not a good sign. “This is the first time something like this has happened to my weapon. It’s never broken in two. But yours is doing even stranger things.”✪

A common anomaly among Cosmos Wonders, it seemed. Nalanda only hoped that his never strayed so far that he couldn’t reach it, but he supposed as long as it wasn’t traveling into some black hole he shouldn’t worry.
Which was easier said than done when he wasn’t also dealing with things like a disagreeable weapon.
He looked at his weapon apologetically, and carried that expression when he turned his gaze to Erytheia as well. “It might be because I’m a bit rusty with these things. I’ve been so swamped at work that I’ve hardly had time to do much of anything. The hospital never sleeps.” He sighed, because when it came to picking and choosing his battles at least he knew he was making a difference when he went into work.
Out here, it was hit or miss, and he often felt like he wasn’t reaching his full potential.
“I suspect if mine is acting stranger it is because I have less control.” Erytheia seemed rather put together, after all. “I hope these oddities end soon, though. It’s making it difficult to get back in the groove of things when we’re so far off track.”

“Oh. No. I…” Erytheia hoped he hadn’t implied that Nalanda’s weapon issues had anything to do with Nalanda himself. “… don’t think it’s because of anything you did or didn’t do. It’s happening to both our weapons. Besides, there was a time when I went to study abroad for over a year and never used my weapon. But when I came back to Destiny City, I summoned it without issue. So I don’t think being a little rusty has anything to do with it.”He was silent for a moment and a sense of worry could be seen on his features as he looked again to both weapons. “No. I don’t think it’s just us. I suspect something more serious is happening to our knight powers than simply a lack of control. But I don’t know what.”✪

Nalanda pressed his lips together and nodded, unsure if that was more reassuring or less. “Ah, that’s too bad. I was sort of hoping it was just me,” he admitted. “If it’s something more serious…”
There was great cause for concern. If it had just been him struggling to get back into the groove of things, he could have at least treated it like any other skill–you had to be bad before you could get good.
“Well, I don’t really know the first thing about resolving that.” Who were they supposed to go to if it was something serious?
“Someone must have an answer.” It just definitely wasn’t him. “I don’t want to just hope that things will resolve in the morning, but…”
This was incredibly inconvenient–and worse, dangerous. If the Negaverse caught them while they couldn’t defend themselves? He didn’t even want to imagine.

“Someone must know.” Erytheia said to Nalanda, but also to reassure himself. There had to be an answer. There just had to be. But the question was where would he find it… “I’m going to search for other knights. Ask them if this has occurred to them, too. See if anyone has been able to get to their wonder. You’re right. Someone must have the answer.”Erytheia looked down at his weapon — or what was left of it — it was barely wood now, falling from his hand like dust in the wind. ✪

Someone must. But the chance that they were unreachable was such a high possibility that Nalanda found himself reluctant to hope too much. He had few connections and hoped Erytheia might have better luck.
He smiled, and gathered his weapon closer as if tender touches might restore it to its proper form.
“If you find any answers, I hope you’ll let me know. I’ll do the same,” he promised, but aside from Whisler and Starlight, he knew his leads were few and far between.
“Best of luck for tonight, Erytheia. I hope the next time we cross paths it’ll be with better news.”
Knowing this was happening elsewhere made him want to get home and check on the Knights he lived with. He didn’t know if he’d find comfort in them having the same issues or in finding it to be Cosmos-specific.
