It had been a long time since he had trod these floors, these halls. It was like trying to return home, familiar but alien. So much had changed and remained familiar, but it all felt a touch removed. Or perhaps it was him, changed and unchanged and no longer fitting in the spaces he once did. Too long departed, but I am so relieved to be back.
“I see… some changes have happened since I was last here.” He paused, impressed, and offered a bow to Jet. He continued with a nod to Axinite, who was a more familiar face.
“Allow me to pay respects - I brought souvenirs from my last mission. Would anyone like some?” He quipped, tossing a handful of star seeds onto the table, it was like old times. The days when they used to pull these out of civilians instead of energy.

Jet had been sitting across from Axinite’s desk, going over the various reports that had been compiled, when someone arrived that they hadn’t been expecting just yet.
“General King Zinkenite,” he greeted, surprised to see him so soon, but not disappointed as he turned to watch the General King deposit a handful of starseeds in front of them.
“Depending on what you’ve heard since getting back, you may want to hold onto those,” he nodded to the starseeds, although he rose from his seat so he could push it back and allow room for Zinkenite to sit with them if he wished.
There was a momentary pause, and he could feel his cheeks warm a bit, but smiled nonetheless.
“Jet,” he introduced and held a hand out to the returned General King. “We met, uh… during some distracting circumstances.”
He was very well aware that he was just another face of many, many, many agents that Zinkenite must have met over the years. A General at the time he’d first introduced himself, there hadn’t exactly been much time to talk, so he wouldn’t blame the General King for not knowing who he was. It wasn’t as though he sought fame or fortune anyway.
So as not to leave Axinite in the dark, he offered a smile to him as well. “Reconnaissance mission to the Traveler’s Tower. Nearly six years ago, I believe.”

Axinite had read Zinkenite’s message as soon as it had come in, and immediately passed the information on to a few others. Laurelite was deep in the Rift tonight and he didn’t want to pull her from her duties, so he was more than happy to receive Zinkenite in her stead. Zinkenite arrived sooner than expected but he wasn’t unhappy to have him while Jet was here.
He smiled politely, the slightest bit strained, when the starseeds spilled across his desk, but he stood to greet the General King.
Everything on Axinite’s desk was otherwise neatly organized, although he did have a few different stacks of papers. They had plenty of information on the tablets, but there was still so much that needed to be uploaded. The pastries and sweets he baked were pushed to one side to make room for their paperwork.
“Zinkenite,” Axinite greeted. “You arrived earlier than I thought you might. Welcome home. I wasn’t sure if we’d be seeing you tonight or in the morning.”
He and Jet had a lot of work to get through tonight so pushing that to the side hadn’t really been an option. They were going as quickly as they could manage while still being thorough, but he had still hoped to finish before Zinkenite got in. He knew that coming back from a long mission could be jarring. Not everyone wanted a party. On his own missions, what felt like a lifetime ago, Axinite had liked to submit his report and go to bed.
It had been a long time since Zinkenite was back home; Axinite didn’t want to overwhelm him on his first night back. Even as Jet offered his own chair, Axinite moved from behind his desk and opened the door to the small storage closet to pull out another one. Although, Zinkenite was more than welcome to sit on the couch if he preferred.
After setting the new chair down, brushed the wrinkles out of his suit. He’d been hunched over at his desk for a while now and it showed.
“I’m glad you two are acquainted. Jet’s been a great help. How are you doing, would you like some tea? I’ve just brewed a fresh pot. And I’ve got snacks. It’s not all sugar based, I’ve got some fruit, sports drinks. Please, make yourself comfortable. How are you doing?”

A complicated look flickered through Zinkenite's eyes, and he reached up to pull down the mask that so frequently covered the lower half of his face, he looked, appologetic for the mess he had just made. "Old habits, my appologies for the mess." He murmured.
He almost reached for the scattering of glittering crystals but then stopped himself, afraid to contribute to a mess because he worked with his own very precise system.
"I thought this was best reported as wrapped up as soon as possible. Id be lying if I said I wasn't itching to return after that... nonsense, loose-lipped fools, senshi espionage, who would have thought they could make it as far in as they did." His fist clenched hard for a moment before he forced it to release and turned a smile and a nod at Jet.
"I..." He said with a small pause as he took in the features of the Young Soverign. "I do remember. My appologies, it took me a moment, congratulations on your promotion! It will be an honor to work alongside you." He bowed again slightly.
He glanced at the baked goods, as if he couldn't quite process their presence, but he took a seat slowly and sighed. "I...would love some tea if it's not too much trouble. Is there anything that I might assist with? Can you... I've been out of the heart of things too long. Would it be too much trouble to ask to be, caught up?" He looked embarrassed to ask, but he was sincere all the same.
“Including, why I might want to hold onto the star seeds perhaps? I thought we’d moved wholly to energy collection short of, well…” He waved a hand. “Punishment.”

“It’s an impressive collection,” Jet hummed thoughtfully, sincerely as he glanced over the starseeds once more. He didn’t know whose starseeds they were, but he could only imagine they were better off dead, lest they cause harm to the Negaverse in some way. Certainly, Senshi espionage would be reason enough to take starseeds.
The expression on Zinkenite’s face made him wonder what exactly he went through, but he supposed he would read it in his report. There was no point in getting Zinkenite worked up when he was supposed to be relaxing now that he was home. Of course, Jet also wouldn’t argue against hearing his stories.
He would have to get an empty jar from his office to offer to Zinkenite for his collection.
Jet let out a quiet laugh when Zinkenite bowed slightly again, and Jet quickly shook his head and waved his hands as though to fend him off, apparently a little embarrassed about any praise or attention. Probably because it was from a General King that he’d admired for a long time from the sidelines.
“Thank you, it will be an honor to work beside you as well. It’s a relief that you’re back. Things have been…” Jet paused to grimace as he tried thinking of what he wanted to say. “It’s been interesting. Everything is still under control at least, mostly because the White Moon is so disorganized, but their numbers are still growing.”
Being asked to go over things was absolutely something Jet was willing and wanting to do. He just wasn’t sure what to start with.
“We have new, uh… temporary allies,” he decided, since it was more likely for Zinkenite to run into one of them. “Aliens that call themselves Velencians. Their leader, a large man that goes by Lyndin, has been working with Her Majesty on some projects. We’ve been able to get some new technology for ourselves with his help. Although I don’t think it was his intention. Starseeds and energy power the technology -- a weapon that can be used to attack Senshi worlds and Knight Wonders.”

Axinite, visibly amused at Jet’s modesty, returned to the teapot brewing behind his desk. He had plenty of clean cups just for this occasion. The tea itself was traditionally brewed–nothing prepackaged, nothing in a bag. The tea was as much for him as it was for his guests, and he thought he deserved the extra expense of having properly brewed tea.
He had a half-finished cup on the edge of his desk, and he’d have more before the end of the night.
He wore a soft smile as he listened to Jet, nodding along with the information he shared. It was only when he’d finished speaking that he passed the tea over to Zinkenite and took a seat again.
“We’ve been busy in Destiny City. But I know you were, too.”
He began to collect the starseeds, neatly arranging them in a line on the desk. He had an almost distant look as he did so, but it didn’t keep him from speaking. “I haven’t read your final report, but I was disheartened to learn of everything you had to deal with. It sounds like you went through a lot. But Queen Laurelite will be pleased. I know this was important to her. I don’t think even she had any idea how deep the problem was until you got in to find out.” Zinkenite had sacrificed much to fulfill this mission. He’d given time and energy and dedicated himself to rooting out corruption, and taking down enemies that had so easily concealed themselves for too long.
The problem was greater than they could imagine, but he knew Zinkenite had come back now only because he was certain that he’d taken care of it. All of it.
Once, Axinite used to be tasked with such missions. Now, he much preferred his desk.
“Our alliance with the Velencians was brokered by Queen Laurelite. We have shared some technology. Best not to discuss with the Vanguardians,” or most others, “What we have done with our share of it. I’ll get you the full information later. Jet and I were working on an information packet for you, I’ll have it finished up and sent over as soon as possible. We’ve got a hospital set up, a proper one. And salaries. I know you had funds while you were abroad, but we’ll have some backpay for you as well. There’s a lot of good and bad that you’ve missed.”
He didn’t want to overwhelm him with negatives, or leave them out now only for him to be surprised later. “For every victory we have, the White Moon gets lucky. They’ve recruited some Senshi from beyond our world, though they’re few and far between. For now. The Velencians are working with us to find a single target hiding on Earth, somewhere in Destiny City. They need him to save their world. They’re not interested in Earth, they’re nomadic. We won’t have to worry about them. The new invaders, though.”
He seemed unimpressed. “Well. I hope you weren’t tired of hunting renegade Senshi, yet.”

"If I hadn't been the one dealing with it, it would have been you, I'm glad to have been of some service after my, untimely accidnet took me out of the front lines for so long." He admitted, flexing the metal hand, and eyeing it as strange even after all this time.
"Velencians..." He said carefully, unsure what to make of that word, of that revelation, cradling the tea in his hands now as though it were a lifeline back to sanity. "Aliens, as in true... aliens not just senshi reborn to this world?" He blinked. The weapon though, that changed everything, it no longer felt like a simple game of chess with the ever growing ranks of senshi, they had something so, dangerous and powerful.
And better yet - a HOSPITAL! That was more delightful than the prospect of pay, protecting their men and women as valuable resources.
"It... sounds like other than the wonderful changes on our side that the Senshi are as, frustrating as ever. Small wonder they can keep their numbers up when they are unafraid to recruit children." He intoned with a familiar bitterness. There was so much to catch up with, but he craved to know the better and the worse of things. He glanced at Jet, who had cut himself off from expressing negative thoughts.
"Things have been... difficult?" he prompted carefully. "I will, rest more easily if I know at least some of the negatives as well, I'm not... I am not an optimist at the best of times." He admitted.
"And... if it's not too much, I'd love to hear of your promotion, though it doesn't have to be tonight."

While Axinite spoke and explained things in more detail to Zinkenite, Jet took up a spot by the desk, crossing his arms casually over his chest and leaning against the edge. He was careful not to mess up the piles of paperwork, or the baked goods that took up space there.
He frowned, a million different thoughts cycling in his head. What it would mean to have Zinkenite to help them. What the White Moon could be up to now. What they could do to continue improving things for the Negaverse.
The threats that existed beyond Earth… what they’d feared. An actual invasion of aliens on Earth, and no matter how they tried to stop it, the Senshi kept crawling out like cockroaches.
“Real aliens,” Jet confirmed with a glance over to Axinite to make sure he wasn’t speaking over him. “They can disguise themselves as normal humans, but they’re usually quite tall. Unnaturally colored skin and pointy ears and slit eyes. They don’t have an energy aura like Senshi, so if you’re questioning if some other alien is a Velencian or not…” It should be easy.
Jet paused again when Zinkenite turned his attention back to him, and he tried to offer him a small smile of reassurance. Followed by another quiet, somewhat flustered laugh when asked about his promotion.
“Every so often, the White Moon gets clever,” he tried to explain, ignoring the heat that rose to his cheeks. “They’ve got groups of Senshi who can -- what’s the word they use -- purify youma. They also got their hands on items and devices that can prevent magic from being used. More importantly, prevent our ability to teleport. We were able to destroy a central device that our intel suggested the White Moon meant to expand to cover the whole city.”
He spared another guilty glance over to Axinite. It was a mission that he’d requested the Queen to specifically keep from the General King. Jet hadn’t wanted him to worry himself to death, or put himself in unnecessary danger.
“I’m afraid there’s not much to tell you about my promotion, other than it being a huge honor that Queen Laurelite has placed her trust in me, and I have no intention of ever letting her down.”

Axinite knew plenty well an untimely accident could do, and he was very familiar with being removed from the front lines. He had yet to return to them and made himself useful here, behind his desk.
Axinite’s expression was passive, and the slight smile persisted despite the fact that he did not approve of anyone keeping information from him. Of course he’d have worried. Not knowing then spared him one concern, but now he lived each day wondering what else was being hidden.
So, he was extra dutiful when it came to gathering information, and quick to pick holes in any inconsistencies. Thankfully, there had been no further efforts–that he knew of–to keep him in the dark. The option to be involved, or worry about those involved, was perfectly in his hands again.
“General King Jet is too modest. There’s plenty to tell of it. He is capable of expert planning and execution, and his loyalty to the Negaverse is nearly unmatched. You two have a lot in common.”
Though he’d spent less time with Zinkenite, it was simply in his nature to pore over old records. Jet’s input and answers were welcome, and Axinite had nodded along as he spoke.
Zinkenite had missed a lot here in Destiny City, and it hadn’t been safe to transmit many updates while he was managing problems elsewhere.
“We’ve foiled most of their plans. Reluctantly, I must admit that they have surprised us a few times. They’ve found a few more Princesses, but they haven’t yet mastered the ability to work together. They’ve sabotaged many of our efforts to stabilize the city, but.” He shrugged. “I don’t expect the White Moon to understand. They do more harm than good. But our spirits are high, more so with you back. We’ve kept things under control, but I’ll hope your experience will be enough to help us tip the scale back in our favor.”
At the very least, he was certain it would be good for morale. It helped that Zinkenite was competent on his own, and his experience was a great boon to them all.
“Commodore Lyndin, the leader of the Velencians, has residence in the City. Please don’t be surprised if you see him out and about. He usually keeps to himself, but we’re perfectly aware of his presence. We’re supposed to see him soon about a project he’s working on. He’s told us he can enhance the output of the energy we’re collecting and storing. Which is good, because Queen Laurelite’s got us working on quite the side project right now. We’ll need all the energy we can get. Ah, but you’ve only just come back, don’t let me weigh you down with more work so soon. She’ll want to make sure you’ve had adequate time to recuperate and settle in before taking on more.”
Hypocritically, he cautioned, “We don’t want you to overwork yourself. We’ll be here to support you, of course. General Queen Hessonite and General King Lepidolite as well, if you ever need anything from them.”

"There was a time I would have felt that the two of you made me, utterly redundant." He admitted ducking his head and absently tugging at his mask as though he were tempted to pull it up again and hide his face.
"But the more of us there are that are capable of that, the better off we'll be. I'm... honored to serve beside you both and all the good officers that report to us, I'm glad to be back."
He raised the tea in a toast.
"But damn, how many Royals can they dig out of the woodwork? I don't suppose we've killed any of them yet? Corrupted one?" It was a vain hope. “How though, are they purifying Youma? I thought that once the transition was complete, that they were….” he waved a hand with a frown and then knuckled at his chest, thoughtful and troubled.

Still feeling guilty about keeping Axinite in the dark, Jet did his best to reassure him that he wasn’t hiding anything. The mission, while approved by the Queen, had been a huge gamble. There was little room for error and could have easily been a suicide mission if he hadn’t been dealt a perfect hand of cards.
He knew that kind of trust needed to be earned back, and maybe it never would be, but he was doing his best to leave his mentor and friend with no doubt in his mind. A little easier said than done, but he was at least making an effort to share everything he could with Axinite.
As Axinite nodded to what Jet said, Jet nodded in agreement with everything Axinite shared. Offered a flustered smile at the additional praise. And while he didn’t have any of his own tea left, he nodded to Zinkenite’s gesture of a toast.
His smile was a little weary when asked how many. He didn’t want to overwhelm Zinkenite with too much information. Especially after seeing that expression on the General King’s face when he talked about Youma.
There seemed to be more to what he said than just a passing comment, but Jet didn’t think it was the right time to ask for more details.
“A few,” he hummed softly and glanced over his shoulder at the large packet of information he and Axinite had been working on. “Known symbols, magic, allies. There’s information in the public database as well. I’ll admit that I don’t envy you for having to learn so much. Hopefully you won’t decide you’d rather be abroad after reading through everything,” he grimaced.

“But,” Axinite insisted, “Please don’t try to read it all at once. I’m very serious, take some time to rest. There’s no quiz on this, and Laurelite’s already made it clear that you’ll have whatever time you need to settle in.”
Any mission that spanned this long deserved ample time to relax, and no matter how eager Zinkenite might have been to get back into things, Axinite insisted. He knew very keenly what it was like to be spread too thin, and while there was nothing he would do about himself, he would do all that he could to stop others from making poor choices.
It could be difficult to shift from the mindset of the mission once you’d committed yourself for so long. He knew how deeply Zinkenite had been, and if he wasn’t careful it was easy to slip into bad habits. Reading was still work! Information was important, but he didn’t want Zinkenite to strain himself trying to absorb too much while reacclimating. No doubt he wanted to see what in the City had changed, who in the Negaverse. Whoever was in his personal life. He must have had hobbies or passions to pursue.
Axinite didn’t know how much he’d had to sacrifice to find success abroad, but it was easy to imagine how much it must have demanded of him.
“Jet and I have worked hard to compile everything. You’ll find a surplus of information on every conceivable topic, some of the other General Sovereigns submitted information they thought pertinent to share.” It was well-formatted, obviously with great care to be as digestible and organized as possible. “Of course, if there’s anything you have questions about, or topics you find yourself invested in, please don’t hesitate to let us know. We have no intention to keep you in the dark. We’re very happy to have you back. I’m looking forward to getting to work with you again.”
When the papers were safe and passed along, he lifted his own teacup to mimic Zinkenite’s gesture and sipped half of what he had remaining.
