Quote:
It was already late in the evening but the merchant seemed unfazed by the passing of time. He sat, poised and elegant, watching the world around him. He didn’t seem bored, even as he leaned forward and laced his fingers atop the table; below it, he kept his toe tapping to some silent tune in his head. He was tall, by human standards, though while sitting down he didn’t seem particularly threatening. If you didn’t look at his face.

He had graceful features--sharp and refined. His chin and nose tapered to a point, giving him an air of sophistication, but that, combined with his slitted eyes and pointed teeth, there was something undeniably predatory about him. He watched with a hungry gaze and a mischievous, nearly sinister smile. His ears were pointed and were prominent despite being tucked behind his vibrant, multi-colored hair. The most intrusive feature that indicated there was something not human about him were the curling horns protruding from his temples and the oil-slick black scales that brushed his cheeks and forehead. He was well dressed, in a fashion obviously otherworldly, and seemed to enjoy dressing himself up in glistening gemstones.

His table was somehow both simple and overwhelming; it was draped in a dark purple tablecloth, with extravagant embroidery in different designs. Scattered neatly atop the table was an array of items that seemed to carry some magical weight to them.

He did not seem intimidated in the slightest and, upon noticing that the barrier surrounding him rippled when his visitor entered, he smiled.

He did not rise to meet them nor adjust his position in the slightest. He followed them with his fierce eyes and greeted, in a silky voice, “Welcome.”

Urania had been meaning to go to the Star Festival. But something else had changed her mind.

Yuri had told her all sorts of things about the celebration, of course. And she really did want to go. Just having ‘star’ in the name had been enough for her. Yet he’d, as he was getting quite used to doing, had explained the whole thing to her and how it worked. Destiny City held the festival every year and that was Earth years, he’d stressed. She knew Earth years, she’d said. Even Urania used those as its main metric of time. (Though they did have their celebrations on the Urania year which was about three years and some for this planet). He’d said it was all about spreading good will and positive change. She’d assumed it was about stars. They’d argued. But then Yuri said there was usually a meteor shower so it was kind of about stars, in a way. He hadn’t had time to explain any further before she was out the door…

… yet she wasn’t at the festival now. She was on the outskirts of town. She had felt something. And when she felt something, we’ll, she had to obey that call.

Even if that meant giving up the stars for a night.

Almadel watched as the Senshi entered, and though she wasn’t as quick to chat as he was, he didn’t seem to mind carrying the conversation. He gave her a moment before he spoke again. “I don’t think I’ve seen you around here before. Come closer, you’re welcome to peruse my wares. I don’t know if you saw the sign out front? I’m a traveling merchant. I’m hoping to make a few good trades while I’m in town. Is there anything you’re looking for?”

He gestured towards the display laid out across his table. “I’ve got this and more.”

There was a distinct array of treasures and trinkets, some more identifiable than others spread across his table. He seemed eager to share them all–for the right price.

Urania’s starry eyes had first gone to the box with the glowing star. She realized it was emanating some sort of energy that had called her inside the tent. But it was also very pretty and very shiny and very glowing.

All qualities that tended to give her tunnel vision and leave her abandoning her more detail-oriented and observant senses. Like, sign reading for instance.

“Oh! Sorry. I didn’t see the sign.” The senshi said, a bit embossed, as she pried her eyes from the star box to notice the man. “There’s nothing in particular I’m looking for. I was just drawn in by that box of yours, I think? Anyway, the star is really pretty.”

She looked at him now and saw the sparkle in his eyes and the inhuman features. Was he a deep space senshi? But, if so, why didn’t he feel like one? The only aura came from the box that she abandoned for now.

“I didn’t introduce myself, either. I’m Sailor Urania of Astronomy.”

Almadel laughed when she mentioned not seeing the sign. He didn’t seem offended. “Oh, it’s a pleasure to meet you, Urania. Astronomy is an interesting sphere. I’m a bit envious, I spend a lot of time amongst the stars, I bet you’d be useful in a pinch. Go ahead, you’re welcome to take a closer look at the box, if you like.”

He wasn’t worried about her getting any clever ideas and trying to run off with it.

“My name is Almadel. I don’t have a fancy title, I am but a simple merchant. I’m very open to negotiations, if you see something you like, we can discuss a trade. Or, I can put it on hold with you if need be.” He shrugged; he wasn’t too worried about it. He was planning to be here for a while yet and there wasn’t any need to stress the details.

“You have lovely eyes.”

“You spend a lot of time amongst the stars? That must be the best!”

Urania was excited and maybe a bit jealous, too. Almadel might say he was envious of her, but it sounded like whatever he did was the absolute best!

“What do you do that you get to visit the stars? Do you sell stuff on other words, too?”

Urania studied his features further.

Almadel had horns. Some sort of dragon-like scales on his face. Pointed ears. And then there were his eyes, the first thing about him she had noticed, or had that been the pointed and mischievous smile? No. It was the eyes. They were interesting. She nodded as he complimented her own eyes. But his were just as fascinating.

The merchant definitely wasn’t human just like she wasn’t human. But that was all she could figure out.

“What about these?” She pointed to a pair of star earrings that reminded her a bit of the star on the box.

“Oh, do you like those? They match you,” he said, and nodded approvingly. Maybe he was just eager to make a trade, but then, he seemed rather invested in the conversation, too.

“I think they’d be better in your hands than mine, so I think I can come to a very agreeable price, for you. One of my treasures for one of yours.”

He had plenty of time to wait for her to consider what she wanted to offer or produce it; she’d given him some wonderful conversation topics and he just couldn’t help but bite.

“I’m fortunate that business lets me travel often. I don’t like to be tied down to any one place. I travel often, here and there. I’ve set up shop on a few other worlds, but Earth is my favorite, probably in all of the universe. I’ve been to many corners, but even the worlds that aren’t crumbling under one catastrophe or another are so boring. Lonely, even. I mean, it’s great for exploration and adventuring, and I’ve found so many lovey things just left behind, but still. I’m a social creature, it’s hard to be anywhere with only myself for company.”

“That’s great that your work allows you to travel. I used to travel, too.” She said, but then thought it over and clarified.

“But that was a long time ago. Now I’m mostly stuck here on Earth. But once a month, I can manage the energy for a trip back home. Earth is really nice, though. I can see why it’s your favorite.” She giggled. “If you don’t tell anyone else, I’d say it’s quickly turning into my favorite, too.”

She really was starting to like it here. The Star Festival had shown her so much good to this world already. And the people, well…

“I can see how it would be lonely. On my world there are no people anymore. I guess, that’s why I like it here: people.”

Urania summoned an object from her subspace.

“I do have something from my world that I could offer you.”

It was a shard of crystal about the size of her hand that had a distinct curvature to it.

Urania was charming, Almadel thought. She had a nice laugh. Even if she was just being playful, he could keep a secret if it meant she’d come back to visit.

She pulled a crystal out of nowhere and he tilted his head as it caught the reflection from some of his magical lighting. The shield alone made it sparkle.

“Oh, that’s unexpected.”

It wasn’t the fruit he’d come to expect from most of these trades, and he couldn’t immediately recognize it so naturally he was interested.

“I don’t know that I’ve seen something quite like this before. Would you be so kind as to educate me?”

“Well, I can’t say I know what it is made of, but I can tell you what it’s from.”

Urania looked down at the crystal. It was unlike the other crystals on her world. It had an almost gold color in it, but it was otherwise translucent.

“When my world fell to Chaos, my mother put some sort of spell on me using magic of my father’s. It incased me in crystal in stasis until a comet broke the seal. This —” She held the crystal out so Almadel could see it more closely.

“— this is a shard of that crystal.”

The crystal was suddenly all that he could focus on. He was completely still–even his tail stopped twitching–but he quickly snapped out of the enthusiastic fog of desire. “I’ll take it, yes.”

He didn’t reach to take it but he visibly wanted to, and it was difficult not to just squirm to examine it.

Something rare? Something unique? Something beautiful, and personal? How could he not want it?

Perhaps he realized how excited he was, and he paused, drew in a calming breath, and settled down so he could properly conduct business. He managed a polite smile to her, but his eyes immediately returned to the crystal.

Uranus watched Almadel’s tail go silent. It kind of reminded her of some of the tribes on her world that had tails. They showed emotion in the same way.

“Sold! You can have it.” She placed it in his hand. “For the earrings.”

Alamadel wasted no time in curling his fingers around the crystal. It disappeared from sight and he nodded towards the earrings.

“They’re all yours, then. Thank you. I’ll take good care of this. I trust you’ll do the same.”

Of course, they were hers now, to do with as she pleased. This was a pleasant, easy exchange. He’d be glad to see her back here again.

“I hope I’ll be doing more business with you in the future.”
