Sailor Urania knew a few things now that she was settled on Earth. One: You don’t tell anyone your civilian name and your powered name. They can know one or the other. It’s dangerous to do that here on Earth because of Chaos. (Although Sailor Alastor now knew both.) Two: People’s past lives aren’t always the same as their current lives. That’s just for very new and very specific senshi. (Yuri was her friend, Tsubasa, in the past, but in the present is the knight of Erytheia.) Three: That person down there looks really familiar… (But why and how?) She had managed to perch herself on a rooftop. Her magic was good for getting to places that were hard to get to. And Earth seemed to have plenty of buildings that were high up and great for both exploration and the view. And that was how she spotted them. From high up and in the middle of the night. Had she had been on Earth for any reasonable length of time, she would have known that you generally don’t approach strangers in the middle of the night. But, she felt like she knew them from… somewhere. “Hey! Um. Excuse me.”Besides, testing the limits of what you know is what she did best. If only she could get down from the roof as well as she had gotten up… ❂

It was another easy late night; they'd spent some time faffing about, nothing of any particular import, slipping between bars and seeing how many strangers they could get to buy them drinks. Not too many tonight, but it was a fun enough game. It meant they were walking along the street casually when they heard her.
Was the voice calling for their attention, as opposed to another's? It seemed likely. There wasn't a surfeit of bodies in this specific nexus, and Alexis hadn't seen any figures leaping across the rooftops in the last while except this one, although it was difficult to tell with the streetlights blowing out their vision -- which wasn't particularly excellent in low-light, anyway, no more than might be usual for some better-equipped humans no matter if they were in this skin or their own.
Strange, too. Rooftops meant someone who had power, but they'd generally not associated with too many of those outside of being Róka. They tilted their head languidly, unbothered, offering up some attention to this interloper --
(It was a look they'd rarely ever worn back then, this blankness, when they had to remember what would be appropriate to feel and fill it in. Academically Alexis knew this; academically, they knew that they had been different, in ways they did not fully have the ability to describe or to understand, except that they knew much of the shape of the hole.
If they'd been as efficient back then as they were now, perhaps that trouble wouldn't have been so great in the first place. But it was no use ever dwelling on it. All it ever did was cause their half-dead heart to race, fraught with ghosts of feelings they no longer understood or knew how to name.)
"-- Can I help you," Alexis said, finally emerging from that morass of whatever-it-was, no longer flat-footed with what to say. Their face shifted, seamlessly, to that arched-brow aloof look they tended towards as a default.
Certainly they were sure they knew her. They'd fixed the faces and names of all their ex-comrades as deep into their mind as they could nail them. This wasn't a ghost they'd expected might come back nowadays, was the thing, and she had -- caught them off-guard. It would not happen again.Meighei sorry for the wait! theatre festival caught me upside the head like a brick. free time's back though

Urania took her time coming down from the roof. This was only because she was trying to be subtle. And that meant: do not use magic. But traversing was so much easier if she was using her magic. Why were there so many high buildings in Destiny City anyway? But that was a question for another day. First question, first… She jumped off the last ledge and appeared before him. For a second she just stared. Like, really stared. Almost like she couldn’t decide between analyzing every last bit of their features or just being confused. “I could have sworn you looked exactly like…” She stopped and blinked at him, now entirely too close. “But you’re eyes are different.”❂

It was difficult to resist the urge to throttle her for being foolish. Maybe not throttle, but harm nonetheless. It was a perfectly fair question, Alexis could recognize that -- it simply was not what they did these days, to let those lives cross. Having Urania do this within potential eyesight or earshot of anyone was not a variable they wanted to afford. And she was, very doubtlessly, Urania -- not reborn, not reincarnated; the very same girl.
"Strange," Alexis said, halfway between polite and dismissive, "but they've been this way for quite some time; you must have me mistaken. We ought to discuss it somewhere a bit more private, so it'll be easier to determine exactly who's been sharing my face; it's never safe out here." What was the last time she'd seen them? Was it before they'd lost the eye and gotten the replacement? What had they been.... sixteen, seventeen? It was blurry. They'd had less scars. Of course they had. They'd started picking the things up at an accelerated rate the older they got.
Maybe she was thrown off-pace by their sclera. Too hard to recall when they'd known her last. The years weren't lining up correctly. "This way," they said, impatient, and turned towards an unassuming door at the end of the street; that one was usually unlocked, or at least never locked well, and the back room it lead to should be abandoned at this hour.

“Oh! Um. Sorry. I must have been mistaken.” Urania said this, but she was still puzzled. She had a great memory for details. Especially when she wasn’t distracted by anything. And then they were saying it was unsafe. It was almost like Yuri, telling her everything she couldn’t do and everything she shouldn’t say and everything she must be careful about. “I’ll follow you. I guess.”She followed and then remembered Yuri’s rule about following strangers into back alleys. But this person didn’t seem like a stranger. ❂

They were not going to throttle her. It would not be as easy or quick as they would have preferred it to be, her magical strength against the fact that they'd still yet never made it back to their peak of civilian strength after that thousand years, and she might scream, and people would ask questions. Someone would notice she had gone missing.
It was still incredibly tempting. But no. Not today.
The door was unlocked as Alexis expected; impatience on their face, they hustled Urania inside, shut the door behind the two of them, and then palmed the henshin pen they kept in an inside pocket just long enough --
the moment of magical waves and shimmer resolved, and Sailor Róka was standing there instead, their face completely unreadable. They weren't sure what she'd best respond to; frankly, they didn't know if they cared at all. So far her judgement had not impressed them. And she was going to ask questions, because their fuku hadn't looked like this the last time she'd seen them, and they'd been a Super Senshi in those days, and -- they were, Róka reminded themself internally, not going to throttle her or even imply to Urania's face that they might want to strangle her. They didn't know who she knew or who she could tell about any threats they made on her personage.
"Thought you'd died," they said, voice oddly toneless. What did they want to sound like here? What tone would fit their purposes? What were their purposes?

Anyone else would not have followed into the building. Anyone else would not have put themselves in that situation. Anyone else would not be following a stranger. But for better or for worse, Urania was not just anyone. It was a wonder how someone so smart could be so dumb. But, sometimes, dumb at least got you so far. And, as the magic shimmered in that all too familiar way, Urania’s eyes got about as wide and starry as they come. Then, she couldn’t hold it in much longer. “Roka! It is you! I knew I recognized something about you! Then that means… you’re not dead either! Just like I’m not dead! Wait. Then that means you’re at least a thousand years old, too. And you’re… well, you’re you and not a reincarnation of you! So you must have been called by that comet, too, and that means others —”She was getting out of breath now and stopped. ❂

"Reports of my demise were quite exaggerated," Róka said dryly, falling back on -- something. It wasn't kindness or anything close. But she could not know they were empty, they reminded themself, and as someone who had known them she might spot it if they were. Would she? Unlikely. Urania had never excelled in the possession of common sense, had she -- it was hard to remember -- but her behavior tonight pointed to that.
Though I'm sure you would've been thrilled if I was dead and gone, they did not add. Why would they need to tell her what she knew? What they knew she had to know?
This type of dry acidity was a second skin they could still comfortably fit into. It wasn't beneficial these nights; pretending to be in possession of some charisma was far more valuable. But it was -- easy.
"There are a few. I haven't caught names. Reincarnations are far more common." Why would they need to tell her what she didn't need to know? Breaching the civilian-senshi divide was bad enough.

“Reincarnations do seem to be more common.” Urania let a clear tinge of sadness escape her, so different than her earlier exuberance. “You are only the second one I have met that is completely who they were before.”She paced a bit now. There were so few of them. But was that a good thing or a bad one? Those who were reincarnated — they didn’t remember the fall of their worlds. They didn’t remember what happened when Chaos almost conquered the universe. They did not know that pain. “At least, you are here — for better or for worse.”❂

They nodded and left it at that. Completely who they were before. It was a shame that Urania didn't know how comedic that idea was.
"Hopefully for better." It was what she would prefer to hear, Róka assumed; compared to the senshi in this city, she blended far better into their optimistic miens. What she didn't know didn't necessarily need to harm her right now, but they had time to work on that.
For better or for worse. It was a silly thing to say. Why wouldn't someone want to make it worse? Wasn't that the natural instinct of the universe, to drive the knife in?
She'd learn.Meighei i'm gonna count it as a fin here, but you're welcome to do a response on your end!
