When had Erytheia first noticed them? For the starseeds, the answer was quite simple. He’d found one on his first visit back to his wonder after the Star Mount Beacon had activated. It had just been floating there, plain as day. As if finding a starseed on Erytheia was the most natural thing in the world. Well, at least according to his ancestor Yuki, it was. Yuki had told him what the purpose of his wonder was a long time ago now. It was a resting place for starseeds on their journey back to the Galaxy Cauldron. It was one of the last stops, too. Yet even the ghost couldn’t tell him where Erytheia was in comparison to it. But the emphasis had always been just that — was. And that’s what brought him to the Moon Wells. They had actually been one of the first things he had found on his wonder, he had just not known it at the time. There had been little torii gates spread about the vastness of the windswept wonder, most in a state of ruin. Perhaps that is why he had never noticed what they were actually for. It wasn’t until life returned back to his wonder that the water did, too. ——— Erytheia spared no time in bringing his charge straight to the source. What was seen by Avici was a similar scene that he’d shown the others. Except with one main difference. Each Moon Well had a torii gate, a stone circle and a crystal clear pool of water. Each varied in their own way, but they were all instantly recognizable. It was almost as if by design. But there was a glowing light at the center, hovering just over the pool. The light was orange. “Ever since the Beacon lit after placing the Code Piece inside, these have been appearing at Moon Wells all over Erytheia.”And as you approached the edge of the rippling pool, you could see now what it was. A starseed. “I need your help guiding this starseed back home.”Quote: If you are playing a starseed, the primary way for it to communicate with your character is through the Moon Well. Starseeds cannot speak and can’t directly answer questions. They can, however, show you scenes from their life in the reflection of the water. If you are not playing a starseed, the same applies, except that the starseed will go on Erytheia’s turn. Erytheia can assist in interpreting what the starseed is trying to convey. Ultimately, it’s up to your character to determine the message it is sending and help it model ready to move on. ✪

Well, wasn't this just cute? Looked like something straight out of a painting, Erytheia did, and the slender boy who wore all that white and gold was just as picturesque himself. Avici had tried to mind his manners on the way out — a feat so impressive, he thought he deserved an award for it — and he hadn't even wandered off the path or interrupted the other knight to ask him about five hundred million questions, either. No, Avici was well-behaved. His grandmother would be proud.
So it was with a perpetually there, smug smile that he nodded to Erytheia's instructions. The boy had left him to his own devices for sending off a starseed, andafter asking the bare minimum, Avici understood that they needed to go to the great Soup Kitchen in the Stars. Or, well, to whoever it was that was making soup out of them.
Avici approached the moon well, clever little setup it was with a fancy-looking Torii gate over a fat little well full of water. He spun his flute in hand idly as he got close, then rested his hip against the lip of the well as he stared into it. There it was, tiny gem of a thing, pushing out this orange glow that put his eyeliner to shame.
"Hey, Seasoning." He thought it looked awfully large for a piece of seasoning for Space Soup, but maybe this cauldron was bigger than he was thinking. "I got news for you: it's time to send you off to make some Good Soup." He'd never done this before, though. Really, until about 20 minutes ago, he had no idea that there were starseeds or cauldrons or soul soups, but now that he thought about it, the words 'soul' and 'soup' looked nearly identical, so maybe the clues about this weird little space shenanigan were staring him in the face the entire time. That was like, Laike levels of oblivious, but Avici could let that go.
"Yeah," he answered for it. "Pretty great stuff. Can't wait to try it myself. So, like, you want me to play you a sendoff? I've got the best flute skills this side of the galaxy~" He winked at the orange seed as he raised the flute to his lips.Quote: I will be alternating my posts between Avici and the starseed!~

Well, that was new. Erytheia thought as he gave the page one upward eyebrow. He’d not seen anyone come into this situation quite so sure of themselves. Such ease reminded him of Yuki. But would this one’s confidence be enough? “No one has yet tried to send one off with a song.” Erytheia remarked, a small hint of skepticism barely hiding behind amused lips. “But this one had been my most stubborn customer. Are you sure you can handle it?”✪

The starseed floated politely over the moon well, if a starseed could be said to float politely. It hadn't seemed bothered by Avici's suggestion, nor did it seem to do much of anything but sit there and twinkle.
Before Avici played the first note, the waters of the moon well glowed. Then the waters shifted, or the shadows over the waters began to dance — what was a murky, scattered scene soon began to resolve, and the two knights were able to look upon a coherent fragment of life in the waters.
Rain poured down in heavy sheets, weighing down the trees in the distance and scattering off the hat donned by the person before him. That person — a man, taller by a few inches, fit, dressed in soaked-through army fatigues and clean shaven — looked like he was yelling. No sound came with the words he mouthed to the crowd. Then their view shifted just so, like the person whose eyes they saw through was shouting back. The man they saw got close, his face taking up nearly the whole of the moon well, as he had begun to scream back. Water flew into the viewer's eyes as the hat twitched up and down.
Then the man walked away, though he kept shouting. He yelled at someone else, and they could see in the periphery that someone had dropped down and started doing push-ups. In the distance, the forest looked dense and dark. Impenetrable, even.
Then the scene faded.

Well, s**t. Whatever that was, it looked like an army base. And whatever he watched, it looked like basic training. Or what Avici assumed basic training looked like, based off movies like Full Metal Jacket. Either way, he assumed they were facing down some military personnel who died a bad death, probably, if they needed help getting up to the cauldron thing to be made into soup.
So Avici stared dumbly at the starseed for a minute, then seemed to think better of the flute. He put it away, let it hang from his waist sash while he put his hands together instead. To Erytheia's question, he gave an airy, if delighted, "Nope! I'm not sure about any of this, but it can't hurt to try, right?" He grinned back at the boy.
Was the starseed complaining about basic training? It looked complaint-worthy to Avici, though without any words from the starseed, all he could do was make assumptions. "Yeah, that looked like it sucked. But what was the rain like? Was it hot rain or cold rain? Cuz it makes a big difference," he pointed out astutely.
"If it's hot rain, then it's like you're basically taking a shower out there. That's my favorite rain, personally. But a cold rain? That's a recipe for hypothermia, right there. And if whoever that was, whatever they're called? Was doing that to you guys, then they were an a*****e and you should definitely curse them in death." He nodded. "Right, Ery?"

“It can never hurt to try.”Erytheia didn’t quite know what to make of the starseed’s vision so far. It seemed to have been in the military at some point. Perhaps that was why it had never once reacted to him before — he was too much of a pacifist for it. “I wouldn’t get too confident in our judgement of it yet.” He did admire the enthusiasm, though. “Perhaps it has more to show us?”✪

In the next scene it showed them, the moon well went dark with a nightscape. Hills rose and fell around the viewer, with the occasional log fence to hold them back from a steeper drop into a lake, or a grassy valley. The area was rife with trees that had grown tall and robust, protecting the sensitive underbrush from the moonlight. In what little they could see of the sky, only a few patches of stars were visible through overlapping tree branches.
They followed a beaten path. A trail. They were moving forward at a jog, now. Then they were looking left and right, occasionally stopping to look behind them. They paused for a time, then immediately pivoted to action, darting further down the trail.
Then they were running at full tilt. Blurs of tree branches whisked by while they jumped over the occasional fallen log or upturned rock. They moved with such purpose that they were no longer looking about themselves.
Then the objective became clear. To the left, against another fallen log that had made its home on recessed ground, was an injured teenaged boy. He had a branch in his hand and was using it to strike out at an overgrown bat that was the size of half his gangly body. His mouth opened, but no noise came out.
They saw hands before them. Those hands, their hands, were gripping something that they aimed at the offending bat. They crept closer, off the trail, and down into the thicket. The aggressor stayed on its target. Then, as they got close, the bat whipped around with fangs bared and they saw upturned teeth that ran down the entire front of its body. While they unleashed a cloud of mace, the bat fell upon them nonetheless.
The well went dark once more.

Avici didn't know what to make of whatever the hell that was. Some kind of ******** up bat? But who would be seeing something like that? Was it a hallucination? Were they trying to guide a crazy person along instead? He didn't know how to let them down nicely that the reality they experienced wasn't reality at all.
"So, you got any ideas what that was all about? I've seen some Nutters McGee stuff with all this magic before, but never anything like that. No toothbats from hell." And he wasn't sure where he'd find any, either.
"You want us beat it up for you? I bet Erytheia's got a mean right hook." Looking back, he winked at the boy to play along.

“If I had to guess, the creature is a youma. Or perhaps some other beast. We get some really weird things that tend to happen around Halloween and the holidays…”He trailed off thinking about all the times something like that had happened in Destiny City. Way too many for one town, if you asked him. “I would love to. Unfortunately, this is a memory. From either their past life or one further down the reincarnation line. Something we can’t exactly interfere with.”✪

So this thing was full of memories from whoever lived with this rock stuck in their chest. Cool. Great. That wasn't some kind of nightmare fuel. Avici's brow twitched. He played a flat note of exasperation on his flute
He didn't know what a youma was, and since they were trying to send the thing on its way, it wasn't the best time to start a whole tangent on asking what a youma was and why it was attacking people in what looked like a park or a nature preserve. He knew basically nothing, anyway; he didn't have a problem being the idiot for a while longer if it meant helping out this piece of person that had somewhere else to be.
"You mean all the things it's showing us in the well — the bit about boot camp in the rain, and the park run gone foul — it's just complaining about what happened to it? So how do we get it to shut up n' go on its merry way? Commiserate with it?"
He didn't know how he'd do that. He never went to boot camp and he never got mauled by an angry toothy bat before. He'd been chased by dogs, but that was nothing crazy like this. No, there had to be something else to it, or Erytheia wouldn't go asking some know-nothing like himself for help.

Erytheia sighed. “Starseeds come here for a variety of reasons. Most just need a place to rest for a little while before continuing on to the Galaxy Cauldron. This is one of the last stops before then. Most have come a very long way.”He said this as he looked into the pool. “Some, however, are like this one: not ready to leave. My first one and the one after showed me images from its former life in a pool like this one called a Moon Well. This third one… well, it refused to show me anything at all. But it’s already reacted to you. How to get it to move on is likely for you to discover. This one doesn’t care too much for me, it seems.”✪

"They're already dead and they're getting choosy about who guides them? Man," Avici blurted in exasperation as he tapped his flute against his shoulder. "If only we could all be that spoiled."
It gave him something to consider, though. Erytheia kept pretty mum this entire time and seemed more comfortable letting Avici figure things out as he went (and Avici wanted to ask him if it was a good show, what with how he knew nothing about anything, and that wasn't meant as a slight against Erytheia, but was instead an acknowledgement that his blunders should be at least a little entertaining). So the other knight was something of a soft touch, he gathered, and this person was ex-military in some sense of the word.
Turning to the moon well again, Avici spoke more authoritatively. "Alright, Soldier! I need you to get your s**t together and march your a** home to await further orders!" He pointed at the sky for emphasis, even though he didn't know where he was or how that related to home, wherever that was.
Then he waited, hoping it would have some sort of effect. The starseed trembled slightly, then released a final memory into thee moon well below it. This one seemed to occur not long after the second one.
It took place in the city in the dead of night. Tall buildings towered on either side of the viewer, obscured by pre-dawn fog as they walked with a lopsided gait. Occasionally they glanced to the left, where the injured teen from before was relying on them. The teen seemed unconscious or close to it — he was unresponsive even when stopped.
As they walked, the viewer grew slower and slower. Finally they glanced down at their own legs, where a series of deep gashes were gouged into their right leg. Blood poured freely, but what was more concerning was the spreading purple color around each of the wounds. They seemed swollen, and as they walked, it had grown worse. Finally, they reached a point where the carrier had to stop and leave the boy to rest on a metal bench.
The viewer sat beside them, staring down at the gouges in their leg. Then their attention was arrested yet again, and they glanced the way they came to find a mangy red bear with glowing red eyes that slavered at the sight of new victims. The viewer dragged themselves to their feet, looked back at the boy who nodded, and faced the bear. The youth had started to run. The bear had started to run. The viewer did not.
Then the moon well went dark.

“They do seem to be pretty particular.” These things really could give Erytheia a break. He was trying his best, after all. It felt like he knew next to nothing about starseeds, although it seems he would be learning fast… “We’ll see if it obeys.” He said with a smile. He was really coming to enjoy Avici’s attitude. Would it, perhaps, listen, he wondered. Perhaps Erytheia had not been the right one to help in this situation. This starseed needed someone without reservations. The knight watched as the starseed trembled and he had a bad feeling about it all of a sudden. Have you ever wanted to shut a door you were so eager to open just moments before? It was that, except worse. Much worse. Perhaps he should have been prepared for these starseeds to show him scenes of death. They themselves were no longer alive. Could you blame them for dwelling on the situation that made that so? Perhaps it was because this was only his third starseed that the pit in his stomach grew or perhaps it was the savage violence in which this one left Earth? Perhaps it was because he knew, had it been him, he would have done the same? Still, that feeling crept into his voice. “So that is how this starseed came to us. Is that what it wanted to show us?”✪

"That's a bad way to go." Avici blinked at the little gem, all sorts of discombobulated for having been shown this one's lights-out moment. He didn't know anything about youma, but if they looked like demon bears? Then he wasn't facing any until he had his s**t together enough to have a fighting chance.
But, the fact that there were demon bears out there? Was entirely too motivating.
"Sooooo…" Avici tapped his flute against the palm of his open hand as he thought about what to say next. "If I find out if that kid got away okay, would you scoot outta here?" He waited, bright-eyed, hoping that would be enough. It had to be, right? Like, the person who owned the starseed literally just showed them that they were standing there, taking on this demon bear, in order to protect some kid. That'd be the logical thing to do, right? Make sure they were okay and that the whole self-sacrifice thing paid off?
Apparently not, because the starseed still sat there.
"Oookaaaay. What if I beat up the bear, too?"
The starseed hesitated for a moment, then it began to float. It floated until it left the confines of the moon well, then it floated toward the sky.
Avici turned around to face Erytheia. "Is that how that's supposed to go? Do I have to beat up a demon bear now? Because if I do, I'm about to be very in need of a personal trainer."

Erytheia laughed. “No. There’s no way we could find out who the boy is who got away; it might not have been a recent memory, either. It could have happened a long time ago. And you certainly don’t have beat up the bear…” The knight said, but then stopped to consider it. “Well, this is only my third starseed like this. Perhaps promising to beat up youma for it would be enough?”✪
