(( takes places after this ))

There were still some logistics that Breanna and Illyria would need to work out once they got closer to the cache's location but for now Illyria was happy to trail at Breanna's feet as they both travelled the distance that would see them to the mall. The small cat was glad for this outing and a chance to do something that would tick down the hours of the day. Maybe if she was lucky the activity chosen and the level of secrecy that she and Breanna needed to maintain would eat away at the anxiety she would feel if she were to do something like this once more at night.

The normalcy of a geocache hunt during the day could lead to a restful state of being at night where she could do what she used to love to do. Paws that itched to find new places to hide her rocks or just go out in general to a simple evening of watching the human populace interact with each other. Illyria missed these things ... she craved the return to be able to do such things once more without the fear that something was out to get her. Hopefully this feeling of terror at night would pass. She wouldn't be a good Mauvian if she was constantly looking over her shoulder for monsters that didn't exist, but were only in her mind.

As she paused for a moment Illyria glanced around surreptitiously before pawing at Breanna's feet for attention. With a soft voice she spoke, "maybe now would be a good time to carry me. We're closing in towards the mall and while I could still walk at your feet I think I'd rather not run the risk of someone accidentally trampling on me."

“No problem,” Bri shifted her grocery bags to the crook of her arm then knelt beside Illyria to pick her up. She kept both arms folded in front of her so that the Mauvian could use it as a perch to sit on, or her shoulder if she wanted to be up higher, rather than hold her close so that the only direction Illyria could see was behind them.

With her hands and arms full, the phone had to be put away, leaving them with nothing more than their memory of the rough location and description the website had given them.

As they drew closer to their destination, the throngs of people grew denser. Surprising since there wasn’t any holiday coming up to explain the rush. Schools had started up a couple of weeks ago so it might make sense to believe that this was a rush of people looking to take advantage of back-to-school sales to spruce up dorm room living spaces or stalk up on some supplies.

“I think this is the area we need to be.”

Illyria was busy trying to shift her position that made it comfortable for her to be facing forward but also making sure that she wasn't weighing down Breanna's arms. Her gaze swept left and right before she tried to remember what clues had been given for this particular cache. The unusual crowd depth was a little off-putting even to her and she gave a small wrinkle of her nose at the amount of shoppers around them. This wasn't the ideal scenario that she wanted to work within. But this cache cried out to be found and Illyria wasn't going to deny a chance to find another once with Breanna. It felt as if everyone's eyes were on the two of them but now Illyria knew she was just being paranoid.

Raising her paw and gently tapping Breanna's left arm did Illyria direct her friend in the code they'd established before embarking to take a left turn. The main thoroughfare wouldn't be the ideal place for a cache to be hidden even if one of the clues mentioned that it could be hiding in plain sight.

Taking a left would take them away from the shoppers for a moment so they could maybe come up with a new strategy. But also it would allow Breanna a moment to bring her phone back out for a second in order to check their position against the last set of logged coordinates.

Her ears swivelled atop of her head before she risked a sotto question, "I don't think it'd benefit us now as people have probably noted my feline self but I have something that could make me pass as a civilian ... but it'd be weird to go away from the crowd with a cat and then come back without said cat. I don't know why I didn't think of this idea earlier."

"But that aside can you check your phone again, I need confirmation on one of the clues. Something about the one mentioning hiding in plain sight bothers me."

Breanna heeded Illyria’s coded direction and found a place where they could speak privately where someone wouldn’t be able to see or hear their interaction. “Yeah, one moment.”

Carefully she set the Mauvian down and fished her cell phone out of her back pocket. “If you think it’d be easier, I can go over to the corner store and you can join me in a couple of minutes.” It had been a while but she remembered that Liryn had a humanoid form, still had ears though but Illyria had mentioned that she would appear as a civilian.

“I can leave you with my phone so you can try to decipher the cryptic riddle before joining me if you’d prefer?”

Illyria gave Breanna's phone a quick glance before shaking her head. Although she'd appear as just a civilian there was something inherently risky about the move. In the back of her mind the Mauvian was going over what they knew about the cache via the coordinates and the clues that had been left behind by the last successful seeker. It all came down to that phrase hidden in plain sight. That's what was bothering Illyria the most. Her thoughts went back to Breanna's initial comments of where the tagged coordinates landed. "Commons, street faires," and here Illyria turned around ideas in her head before gazing into the distance. Was it possible that someone would have moved the cache to sit right in the open as part of a vendor's booth? Was it worth a shot to look?

It wasn't exactly the most kosher thing to do with a cache but it wasn't breaking any rules and here Illyria sighed before noting the name of the last finder. Her voice was still soft but she had a sense that this could have been the best lead to follow. If it didn't pan out then it would just mean a missed opportunity to find a cache on this day.

"No, I think we could be wasting the time you have left for this hunt on separating and then reconnecting after a short period of time. I have a theory though about where the cache might be," and here Illyria paused before beginning a small pace back and forth in front of the teen, "while it's not the most approved of moves some people will leave a cache hidden around a small business but only if the business approves. I can't be sure this is the case but that clue of being hidden in plain sight makes me believe it is. It's technically not breaking any of the hard rules of geocaching so we could be looking at something that looks slightly out of place either at the outside entrance to a business in the mall, or one of those stalls that might be a permanent fixture of these street faires you mentioned earlier."

It was worth a shot to follow the coordinates to the exact place and then spiral outwards. "I think we should try that. I'll stay in cat form and continue with our system we worked out before."

“Feels like having something that is hidden in plain sight is harder to find than something that is hidden. If it’s hidden you start looking behind things, inside nooks and crannies, or under objects. Narrows down the possibility. But unless you’re acutely familiar with the area, how are you supposed to know if something in plain sight is out of place?” Could be an object like a vase, or some other container, but also ran the risk of being someone’s personal belongings.

When picking this one, Bri had thought that it would be in a more open place, not in a spot where they might look like potential thieves “I understand why ones like this might be frowned upon,” she mused more so to herself.

Leaning over, she lifted Illyria in her arms again and made their way over to the unassuming storefront that was closest to the coordinates on the map.”I wonder if it is in plain sight, how small or unobtrusive it is.”

Illyria was already on high alert as she and Breanna moved closer to the storefront that was marked on the set of coordinates. It was possible also that this cache was one that wasn't supposed to move. Entirely feasible and something that she should have remembered. If anything for the moment they could just pretend that they were window browsing while they unobtrusively scanned the store front for anything that seemed out of place. Illyria was also curious as to what they would do if they found the cache. Technically they could move it once found in order to sign the sheet and exchange items, but then the cache would have to be put back in the exact same place. And considering she'd have to pull something out of her "back pocket" they'd probably have to find a place in which she could have the chance to do so.

Staring through the storefront's window did Illyria catch sight of movement inside the store before she glanced down towards the objects that were gathered around the store's entrance and then back towards Breanna before she gave a soft meow. Something had caught her eye but she wanted to see if Breanna would spot what she'd noticed. One of the objects looked to have a small sticker of a globe crisscrossed with lines of longitude & latitude: something that GPS coordinates needed both of to have a set location marked out. But the Mauvian wanted to see if Breanna would pick up on it.

On her part, Beanna was focusing on looking at things more eye-level or perhaps something they might need to reach for; like something hanging above them or on a high shelf. So when Illyria meowed, she took it as a cue to pause for a moment and set the mauvian down.

“Did you find something?” she asked while glancing at the objects around them since nothing really stood out to her among them.

Although they had communicated what sort of code Illyria thought would work she almost gave an audible sigh, but held back, as she was set down on the ground. She had noted that Breanna had been looking at eye level or above so it could have been that she didn't see the container with the sticker on it on the ground. Instead of being impatient with her friend Illyria took a few steps away from the woman before sitting down in front of what she believed the cache to be in this particular case. It was a subtle hint that Breanna should at least check the container out by maybe seeing if it would be possible to investigate it closer.

There was a chance that she could have been wrong but Illyria had a hunch that the sticker indicated that she was looking at the right thing in this case. The size seemed about right, volume wise, but where as the cache that she'd found before with Breanna it seemed to be a little less in dimensions.

For a moment, Breanna felt confused. A non-verbal question passed between them when her gaze flicked to the side and Bri spotted the sticker.

Honestly, at first, she didn’t think anything of it. Mostly because these days people put stickers on just about everything; from stop signs to laptops to windows and cars. If there was a flat surface to stick it on, someone would find a reason to put one there. The globe, however, was a peculiar choice that couldn’t have been a coincidence.

“Ah, I see…” Breanna spared a glance to the shop owner who just smiled in their direction; apparently, they knew what was there which is why they hadn’t approached them. “Wonder what’s inside.”

She reached for the container and unclipped the tin lid, “You have quite the eye, Illyria.” The container was tilted so she could see the prizes inside.

There were some nostalgic toys from the 80s and ’90s; a Ball and Jacks set, a bag of marbles with a large shooter that looked like small galaxies, a red egg-shaped container of silly putty, two slap bracelets, and a rainbow slinky. “See anything you like?”

The slinky almost immediately caught Illyria's eye but it was the marble set that sealed the deal for the Mauvian. While they weren't rocks they were decorative enough that she likened them to small treasures. Reaching into the container the feline snagged her claws on the bag of marbles before slowly dragging the set out. She gave the bag a quick glance over before nodding more to herself than anyone else. She tapped Breanna's leg for a moment before turning around to see if anyone was around. She didn't want to risk anyone catching on that she wasn't an average cat and she gave a soft meow in order to be picked up again. They needed to put something back into the cache but in order to do so ... Bri either had to cover for Illyria pulling something out of her subspace pocket or she'd put the marbles back.

They'd still be able to sign the log indicating a successful hunt but if they didn't have anything to put inside to replace the marbles then Illyria was willing to go without them. For now though she wanted to be picked back up so she could whisper to her friend what the plan should be.

“Wait here,” Briana got up for a moment and walked over to the cashier's line where she picked out a small pack of glitter gel pens from between the selection of batteries and the case of cold soda bottles. The item was bought and paid for within a few minutes of selection and when she returned to Illyria she showed it to her.

“How about we exchange it with this?” She offered the creme-colored mauvian some scritches to make it appear as more of a one-sided conversation with a precious stray feline than something more.

Illyria sat next to the open container before she nosed at her bag of new treasures (marbles) before watching as Breanna moved away to buy a small pack of pens from the store from which the cache was located in front of before returning. As Illyria moved to lean into the scritches that her friend was offering Illyria gave the small package a going over with approval. A simple but drawn out meow signalled her agreement with the trade.

She had in the meantime dug out the piece of paper that needed details filled out before arching against the fingers that were creating wonderful sensations against her spine. Her paws patted the paper in an impromptu rhythm.

This paper would also tell any finders to leave the cache in place. As it was generally supposed to stay in front of the shop. A stationary cache as it were.

This part she remembered from the last time they found a geocache together.

Breanna signed her name, and Illyria’s, before putting the paper and gel pens in the tin a closed the lid while being mindful to make sure that the sticker was still visible, rather than making it harder to locate by hiding the only visible clue.

“That was actually a lot easier than I thought it’d be.” Granted it helped that she had a veteran geocacher with her which tiled the odds in their favor with finding it quickly. “Thank you for joining me on this adventure, Ms. Illyria. Shall we head home so I can get dinner ready before my sister gets back?” She extended a hand in offering to pick her up again and at least carry her out of the crowd.

Mindful of her newest treasure Illyria daintily plucked the bag of marbles off the ground before allowing Breanna to pick her up. If she had any say she'd be curious about the place that her friend called home, but that would be for another time, another day. She gave a long drawn out meow of agreement before starting a relaxing purr.

All in all, it had been a pleasant afternoon. There'd been a fun activity with pleasant company. She couldn't have asked for more.
