‘Maybe we can talk about it later, if you don’t mind? I… don’t want to kill the mood… Your world is free.’

That’s what he’d said, yes? Then why was he feeling so uneasy now?

Erytheia had agreed to meet Alastor in the park. But, to be truthful, it was a special arrangement so much as it was the only place he seemed to hang out now. Ever since he’d found that dead spot in the park, long after the new princess had defeated the source of it all… he still found himself coming here every night to make sure it hadn’t come back.

Each time, he expected the spot under the tree to be barren; every night it was healed a bit more.

The spot, tonight, had finally regrown to what it was before. But, then, why didn’t he feel any better? Why did he come here every time expecting the worst? It was over. They had won.

He’d beaten the Chaos on his wonder. He banished the Chaos that had spread from Ida’s world to Earth and others. They had even rooted out the Chaos on Alastor’s world that had been there for who knows how long!

Yet, he knew one victory… two… three… when was it enough? Not when there were countless other worlds that needed saving.

It would never be enough.

“I’m ready to tell you what I saw, Alastor.”

‘Later’ always seems to come when you weren’t ready for it.

Alastor had been ready to meet up as soon as the topic had come up, and he arrived a bit early, and only very shortly after Erytheia had. This part of the park wasn’t unfamiliar to him, but he hadn’t paid as close attention to it as the Cosmos Knight, nor did it have the same impact on him. It was a location he passed, not something he’d experienced, and not something that had meant anything to him.

It was an interesting location, and one that was easy enough to find.

He nodded as Erytheia spoke, partly in encouragement, and partly because he was ready, too.

“I’m listening,” he promised. He stood nearby, hands on his hips, and looked down from the sky, where he could just barely make out the stars against the night lights of Destiny City.

When Erytheia said he was ready, Alastor was, too.

Erytheia had his back to Alastor, relaying on aura alone to see when he had arrived. He was holding something. It was small, but it was creating just enough light to distinguish it from the artificial lights of Destiny City.

It was the candle he had received on Alastor.

“You know, this candle had been burning almost since I left your world. I was wondering if it would ever go out. But look at it now.”

It had burned down so much that it almost looked like it would burn the man’s hand soon with only the jewels of the teal and gold base keeping the flame in check. Yet it burned just as strongly as it had when it was first lit.

“It will eventually go out, won’t it?”

Alastor seemed a bit surprised that he’d brought the candle–that it had burned so much already. He had no doubt that it had been lit for the near entirety of their separation. For a moment, the flame caught his eye. He couldn’t help but find some comfort in the familiarity of it.

He lifted his eyes to meet Erytheia’s and finally nodded.

“All flames do, eventually. Even that one. They flicker brightest towards the end, you’ll get a good show out of it if you keep your eye on it.”

He might have sounded a bit sad about it, but he was proud, too. It was no small feat to burn so brightly for so long, and he took great pride in all things Alastorian.

He searched Erytheia’s face, though, looking for the answer to a question he hadn’t asked. He was patient, though. He didn’t mind waiting to see what the Knight was getting at.

“Do you want another? I have more.”

“No. I quite like this one.”

Erytheia sat in silence for another minute before continuing, his eyes still on the candle.

“When I was defending the wall, a piece of Chaos showed itself to me. It appeared as someone I once knew very closely. Someone who I think is dead.”

Alastor nodded. He inhaled and held his breath for a moment as he considered the words. It was a heavy thought, but it was one that Erytheia trusted him with so he was going to give it the contemplation it deserved.

He knew what the chaos could do. Maybe, it could have done more if there weren’t so many of them there to help, but that was a small relief when it could still hurt.

“What makes you think they’re dead?” he asked, and afterward, “I’m sorry, I should ask who they are first, and what happened?”

“Tama. A Mauvian. We were close.”

Erytheia said taking a breath before continuing, the candle flickering.

“I never saw him die. I mean, I wasn’t there.” You weren’t there for him. “But I found his bloodstained cloak. And he never came back to the cafe. He’d never leave for more than a night and he would always be back in the morning. But that day he never came back.”

Devyn nodded slowly, and while he took a moment to consider this information. He had been in Destiny City for long enough to know that sometimes bad things just happened.

If it wasn’t the Negaverse, it could have been a car.

But.

“I’m sorry. That sounds like a heavy burden to carry. Any loss is heavy on the heart. But to find a blood stained cloak,” he hesitated, and shifted his weight just slightly. He planted his hands on his hips and mulled it over a bit more.

Despite being the Senshi of Despair, he managed to find a bit of hope in everything.

“What a strange thing to find just lying there. Everywhere it could have been, you still came upon it. Mauvians are smart. Crafty. Resilient. Is there no chance it was meant to be a message?”

“At first, I thought so.”

He recalled when he first found it. It was at a location that was close enough to the cafe, but also far enough out of the way that he hadn’t found it immediately. Still, he had found it the first night he had searched.

“I thought maybe he was near by or, at least, as far as a cat could reasonably travel and was injured somewhere. But I never found so much as a trail of blood. It was as if he hadn’t moved. So then I thought he may be dead. Perhaps someone had thrown out his body thinking him a regular cat.”

He didn’t like the thought of a regular cat dying either. He did run a cat cafe and just a thought of any of them out alone in the street made him worry. And, yet, Tama would frequently go out on his own.

“But the vision I had on your world.” He looked down at the candle again. “It gave me a third option that I hadn’t thought of before.”

The flame flickered in his amber eyes.

“Chaos could have taken him.”

Alastor’s expression had settled into a deeper frown, and his brows furrowed just slightly. Death or corruption, he had his opinions on what was worse. But, like all things, things weren’t simply black or white. He knew there was a gradient.

Dead meant gone from this world, for now. Back to the Cauldron, for the starseed to be healed and restored.

Corrupted meant a lot more. Maybe he could be saved in this lifetime, but maybe he was gone. Maybe the Chaos had consumed him and his starseed was irreparable, in this life and the next.

Alastor knew Chaos very well, but it seemed like there was always more to know.

After a moment, he nodded.

“Well then, you can’t stop looking. Tell me about him, everything you can. I’ll look, too. Just in case.”

“Tama is a whitish grey. A bit big for a cat. Long hind legs. He looks like a manx or a Japanese bobtail.” Erytheia felt like he was making a ‘lost pet’ flyer. “That means it looks like he is missing most of his tail. He was — is — quite sensitive about it.”

He didn’t want to believe he was dead either. But corruption… that was almost too much to think about.

“One more question.” He asked, if a bit out if the blue. “Do you worry — after the Chaos was destroyed in Alastor — if it would ever come back to your world.”

Alastor didn’t know the difference in cat breeds, but he nodded along anyway. A big white-grey cat with long legs and no tai was something he could keep an eye out for, the rest he’d have to research. He thought he had a good enough idea for now.

“I suppose it’s always a risk. I don’t know how it got on my world in the first place. I’d suspected a curse, or a deliberate attack. But there are other ways it could have arrived. Ways I couldn't predict. So it’s a possibility. But I won’t let it stake any claim to my world again. If it arrives again, in any other form, I’ll be ready for it. My world will heal. And I’ll make sure it’s protected. I know more now than I did before, and I have more help now. I’m optimistic. And stubborn. I won’t let any Chaos win.”

“I suppose there always is.” Alastor’s answer to the question made the frown leave his face. He smiled back. Erytheia may not be as optimistic as Alastor, but he agreed with all his heart. “Neither will I.”

He nodded in thanks before he left.

There were important things he had to do on his wonder to steel it for whatever the future may bring.
