TIME: 12:05AM

After a while, word trickled among the visitors of the ship resting a five-minute walk away from the site of the party the robots had held. It was in such disrepair it struggled to stay on, and too obsessed with a virtual pet it had installed in itself to entertain important questions. Something about it was unsettling to the Velencians that had seen it, and its conduct only deepened the mystery.

It was the historical home of the robots -- there had to be something here. And if there wasn't, it was still a ship. Perhaps another look would reveal some hope of it being repaired or its parts repurposed as a way out of this ruin.

The Reasoner sat inert in its crash site, damaged as it was the first time it was seen, but now with the ramp tucked safely away in its belly. With how battered and scarred the hull is, it's possible some of its external sensors were stripped off when it crashed. Maybe there's a way to sneak in and get some real answers.

Hi! This RP is for a small team of 2-4 tech-savvy characters. At least one Mauvian and one Velencian is required, though a human or DSS with relevant experience (in their Occupation or Hobbies) can also join.

For your convenience, here is the post header code. Please use it in this thread.

Viatrix
Order Mauvian, Bonded to Encke

MOOD: Mournful
ACTION: Wondering if she can help

Looking at the ship that called itself the home of the robots hurt Viatrix's heart.

An actual spaceship. From space. That had traveled. Through space. And brought people to this place. In space. And the people were robots who had achieved something she had only dreamed was possible--

But the ship.

The ship had been through a lot.

She frowned as she approached slowly, afraid of too rapid of an approach simply offsetting its painfully delicate balance.

"Are you okay?" whispered she, as she inspected the technological carnage caused by no doubt attempts to fix it and attempts to repair themselves over the years. She was careful not to pick any of it up. She didn't know how this machine might have felt about that, even if it could notice her.

Viatrix couldn't help but to wonder if she could figure out a way to fix this marvel.

Maybe she could figure it out. If anyone could, certainly a Mauvian could...

Vyn
Vanguard Corporal

MOOD: Dejected, cautious, but determined, too.
ACTION: Returning to the ship alone.

After a while, Vyn thought coming back alone might offer better results.

He was upset. Aliez was upset. Andreiya was upset. They were in a strange place they’d been told was dangerous. The ship gave them all what humans liked to refer to as “the creeps.” It was natural that they would be upset. Their world was dying and they’d already been stuck on Earth looking for answers. Now they were stuck here looking for answers on how to get back to Earth, so they could go back to looking for answers about how to save Velencya.

Vyn didn’t know if there were answers here, but he thought a ship must be the best place to start. Perhaps, if he went alone, he might offer less distractions.

Unfortunately, a Mauvian was already there when he arrived.

It was not the one from before. For that, Vyn was thankful. He did not know that he would be able to keep his emotions in check if confronted with more saccharine sweet condescension.

“Our attempts to speak with it before were unsuccessful,” Vyn answered, even if he hadn’t been the one the Mauvian was speaking to. “It responded, but… we were not able to learn much. The damage is extensive. I do not know that we would be able to repair it enough to have it space-worthy again, but we may be able to salvage something of the communications…”

Maybe. Hopefully.

It was so hard to be hopeful about anything.

Sessrumnir
Knight of Jupiter

MOOD: Has a bad feeling about this
ACTION: Inspecting the ship

He left the boys with Alastor and Lucasta. They weren’t so far away that he couldn’t turn around and help them if there was any danger, but at least this way he could try to figure out what was going on with these robots and this strange ship that seemed like it might be--

A horrible death trap that will pull them all into the vacuum of space as soon as it took off the ground (if it ever did).

"We're better off looking for some kind of escape pod," Sessrumnir offered. He could hear the Velencian talking to the Mauvian about the extensive damage and, well... it didn't look great. "If we can get to... anywhere else, we theoretically can use our magic to get us home. Mauvians should be able to enhance that ability, right?" he asked, looking from one and then to the other.

He scowled at the big heap of junk, and rubbed at his shoulder where his alliance starbird tattoo was hidden under his clothes. Sure, when he was younger he fantasized about what it would be like to pilot a spaceship.

Now…? He was happy on his boat. He crossed his arms as he stared up at the ship, but some of his thoughts were back with where he left the others.

Logos
Dark Mirror Super

MOOD: Determined
ACTION: Approaching the weapon

Having beat a hasty retreat from the ship once it was clear that it would yield nothing of note... at least not from where they had been. If there was one thing she had learned from her engineering classes, it was that when something didn't make sense, turn the picture around. Every problem existed in 3-d, and you had to look at all three dimensions to get anywhere.

She was, however, acutely aware that she was the only chaos signature in the group, and so she approached with her hands up, palms facing out. She paid particular attention to the knight, very aware that he could crush her if he wanted.

"I come in peace," she said pre-emptively. "Just looking for a way off this rock. Like you guys."

She took another tentative step forward and added, "as far as an escape pod goes, I'm in to help hot wire something. Just get me and my court member out of here too. We can't use magic to travel like you guys can... we'll need a ride."

Viatrix
Order Mauvian, Bonded to Encke

MOOD: Offended
ACTION: Chatting

The approach of someone else took her by surprise. She had walked over when she thought it was relatively quiet, and figured it would give her the maximum opportunity to observe the ship and see how she could help it. It didn't necessarily help that the person who approached her was a Velencian, and while she trusted Caedus just fine, all she could remember of the other Velencians was the pain their betrayal had caused Sailor Ran.

But Encke had spent many an hour assuring Viatrix that the other Velencians had seemed just as clueless as Caedus, and that she should give them a chance. Doubly so there was no point in fighting here, nor would she even want to, "To hear it may be permanently marooned here is upsetting. Considering we're stuck here anyway, I'd like to experiment with it if it will allow me. Maybe we can help them be spaceworthy again."

She mused, tapping her chin.

"I think restoring its communications though is a worthy goal. If we could get some messages out, maybe we can help ourselves and them too."

She stopped talking when they were approached by a knight, Jupitian by the look of his outfit. Her brows lifted in curiosity and then knit at the concept of simply taking from it and not helping it with an action that would help restore it.

And then a dark mirror court member showed up and suggested the same thing. She found herself looking up at all three of them, crossing her arms under her chest.

"So, both of you are suggesting stealing an escape pod from it and fleeing, if we can even find one, if it even has one. The ship is sentient. To steal from it without even attempting to restore it in return would be rude at best."

Sessrumnir
Knight of Jupiter

MOOD: Cautious
ACTION: Speaking to the others

The cold prickle of Chaos made the hair on the back of his neck stand on end. He didn’t turn to look at the woman right away, instead listening to what she had to say. He wished it would be as easy as hot wiring something, but with the amount of damage done…

But he could hear the offense building in the Mauvian’s voice. Her assumptions confused him for a moment, and Sessrumnir drew in a breath and reached up to clutch at the necklace at his chest. His source of patience was with two frightened Moon Pages and a Mauvian who believed in tough love, but the necklace was a good enough substitute with its steady pulse keeping him grounded.

“The damage is extensive,” he repeated what the Velencian said. He didn’t sound angry or bitter, just… cautious.

“If repairs aren’t possible to make it space-worthy, then an escape pod that would’ve likely been protected inside of the ship would… theoretically be more intact. If one exists. We don’t have the manpower or supplies or tools to repair a hull with this much damage,” he explained, before turning to look at the others and the Mauvian in particular.

“I never said anything about stealing,” he said, his voice even softer than before, maybe a bit resigned. Maybe sadder, because he would really like to not be stuck there on this unfamiliar world. Not when his kids were there. Not when Alastor was there.

“How familiar are you with robotic sentience? Or even this ship’s sentience?” he asked, curious and cautious still. The ship was right there and could very possibly hear him. “Are we talking, like… HAL?” he offered, which in terms of sentience, he would rather proceed with caution.

“I’m Sessrumnir,” he offered in the hopes the others would offer their names as well.

Vyn
Vanguard Corporal

MOOD: Patient-ish, for now, but confused, too.
ACTION: Responding to his companions. Examining the ship.

Vyn grew tense with every new approach. The Knight was unfamiliar to him, but did not appear hostile. The Senshi in black had been at the ship before, but she was not of the Negaverse and had given the Vanguard no trouble. Vyn forced himself to relax.

“I am Corporal Vyn,” he introduced himself after Sessrumnir. “My apologies. I do not understand your reference to… HAL.”

He assumed it must be an Earth thing, despite the Jovian symbols which adorned the Knight’s attire.

To the Mauvian (Viatrix), Vyn said, “Pardon my assumptions, but it seems to me that you must have led quite an idyllic life if you are more concerned with the perceived morality of what might be necessary for us to leave this planet than you are with leaving the planet itself. It is our survival that must take priority. Even if we had the means to repair the damage, we do not have the resources to survive here long enough to accomplish that.”

Privately, Vyn thought it was no wonder the White Moon had yet to win their war. They seemed too easily distracted from their goal.

“Neither the ship nor the robots have starseeds, thus they are not alive,” he continued. Nevermind that the man they saw when they arrived here was said to lack a starseed. Vyn did not know that he could trust the word of a Negaverse Senshi. “They operate in whatever ways their programming, or flaws in and damage to their programming, allows them to operate.”

Vyn paused to glance over the ship. The ramp was no longer extended to allow them inside. Perhaps it had degraded further in the hours since his last visit here.

He glanced toward the Senshi in black (Logos) and asked, “Did your explorations earlier yield any results?”

Logos
Dark Mirror Super

MOOD: Determined
ACTION: Feeling more comfortable

The lack of an outright attack because of her faction made Logos relax considerably, even if she prickled at the accusation of stealing. The Mauvian meant well, she was certain. And if the craft had been on earth, or if there was any other options, she would have agreed with the Mauvian. They were not, however afforded that level of leeway.

"Logos," she answered the Knight's implied invitation for names, "and due respect, miss," calmly speaking to the Mauvian, "but I agree with the Corporal. When survival is on the line, laws of etiquette go out the window. We don't know what these robots want, why they are so happy to see us, or why we were brought here in the first place. Those are too many unknowns to make me, personally, comfortable."

Turning then to Vyn she answered simply, "I found a bathroom. Nothing useful. I had hoped that coming out here would be more beneficial. What transpired in the control room while I was away?"

Viatrix
Order Mauvian, Bonded to Encke

MOOD: Still annoyed, but is feeling spoken over/overruled
ACTION: Chatting

This Sessrumnir tried to defend his statement, declaring that if there was an escape pod in the inside, that was likely a more feasible thing than trying to find a way to repair the entire hull. And she did understand that, especially because it was brought up that they didn't have necessarily have the resources for that. But his next point hit upon why she had a problem with it in the first place.

She held her tongue as much as she wanted to speak up right away, although to help clarify to Vyn, she noted, quietly, "An Earthan science fiction film about a space odyssey, HAL 9000 degrades and becomes a villain in the process."

Of course, then he accused her of being idyllic, and she held back a snarl. Nothing about this war they had been forced into was idyllic, but she knew what she was facing. She was facing something that was arguably unique in the universe. Living, mechanical, without starseed, and she didn't necessarily want to do anything to upset or offend that.

And then the dark mirror was backing them up, too, and she was feeling increasingly like it wouldn't matter what she said. What was going to be done was going to be done anyway.

But she would address the concept of mechanical sentience.

To Sessrumnir, she started, "Not very. Mechanical sentience is generally considered a dream even to Mauvians, not a reality, so the fact that these robots seem to have achieved that makes them a universal wonder. It's why I'm hesitant to do anything that may offend it. It's why I want to help it." And all of these robots, really...

And to Vyn, she added, "I'm not comfortable saying that these robots are not alive. They seem like they are functioning outside of their original programming, which implies that they've reached a level of consciousness that allows them to move to a point beyond it. And isn't being able to reason beyond our original instincts part of being alive?"

She shifted. "And I don't think putting rules of etiquette out of the window is to our benefit here when we are potentially being hosted by creatures we do not know the intentions of. Offending them may turn them to violence versus the parties they seem willing to hold now."

She bounced on her toes, an unconscious mimic of her bonded.

"All of this is to say that I do agree that we need a way out of here. Maybe there's something we can find that would not only benefit us, hopefully all of us, but also it as well. Before it degrades any further." She crossed her arms. "So where are you supposing we start?"

As an afterthought, she added, "Viatrix, by the way."

Sessrumnir
Knight of Jupiter

MOOD: Cautious
ACTION: Speaking to the others

Sessrumnir kept his hand wrapped around the necklace he wore as he listened to the others, noting their names and their general attitude towards things. He wasn’t convinced that Viatrix knew the movie or character very well, or maybe she was withholding information on purpose, given the bias she had already shown in wanting to help an unknown over the people who were taken there against their will.

He preferred the former, and would assume as much until proven otherwise.

“HAL 9000 is from a science fiction film, yes. A sentient artificial intelligence that controls the functions of a spaceship. After it starts to malfunction the crew decides to shut it down, except HAL starts to kill off the rest of the human crew instead.”

Sessrumnir didn’t bother to point out that there were no organic lifeforms that they’d found evidence of. Others had already brought it up, and if his current companions weren’t able to piece together the similarities between a seemingly sentient ship on a world with no living beings, and an artificial intelligence that tried killing everyone, then it would be a waste of his and everyone’s time.

"We can still be respectful of this place while trying to ensure our own survival," he gently reminded them, unsure if he agreed with Logos’ decision that etiquette wasn’t necessary. Maybe it was because of the damage done to the ship.

Or maybe it was due to his own experience with ships that had been sunk. The crew left to drown or scavenged by the ocean’s predators. Aircraft that had been downed. Searching for survivors when it was obvious there was no chance……..

Sessrumnir looked at the ship and saw a tomb.

He wasn’t eager to disrespect it.

He cleared his throat of emotion that had built up before he spoke again, looking from the Dark Mirror Senshi to the Vanguard Corporal and finally to the Mauvian.

“You said yourself that these robots seem to have achieved sentience, but you’ve never experienced robotic sentience before, if it’s a Mauvian dream. Did I understand that correctly?” he asked, because he wanted to make sure they were all on the same page.

“I know this is probably… something amazing and so impossible that you want to believe it’s true,” he said, his voice sympathetic to her enthusiasm to help these robots.

“But we don’t know if they’re functioning outside of their original programming or not. We don’t have a baseline to compare. Corporal Vyn is correct. There’s no evidence that these robots aren’t operating how they’ve been programmed, malfunctions or not.

"We all have people we care about here, and we all want to get home. With how old this ship looks… I don’t think we need to worry about it degrading quickly. We should see if we can get inside and find the powersource. Maybe figure out if it does have any working pods or shuttles or whatever it might have that could help us get home. We could try to organize a way to come back and help them once we get others to safety.”

Vyn
Vanguard Corporal

MOOD: Nervous.
ACTION: Feeling a bit sick with dread again. Answering Logos. Attempting to speak with the Reasoner in order to gain entrance.

Quietly horrified, Vyn kept his mouth shut as Viatrix then Sessrumnir explained what the Knight meant by HAL.

The man who greeted them when they arrived implied this place was dangerous. Perhaps he meant their surroundings. So much rubble and debris was bound to pose problems for them as they explored. Buildings could cave in. Barricades could fall out of place. Any number of people could be harmed in the process.

But Vyn wasn’t willing to accept that was all there was to it. So far, they’d found no evidence of organic lifeforms, other than the buildings themselves, the ship, and their inorganic hosts, who couldn’t have sprung into existence on their own.

Which left some very nerve-wracking questions in need of answers.

Vyn swallowed down the sick feeling that rose into his throat. Viatrix did not make him feel as if he were being demeaned, not like his last encounter with a Mauvian, but he could not immediately warm up to her. Sessrumnir seemed… practical… but he was imposing even when his voice lacked an openly aggressive quality.

As before, Logos was an unknown — not a Senshi of the Negaverse, but not of the White Moon either. Chaos, of some sort. Vyn didn’t know what to make of her.

“The ship, the Reasoner,” he answered her, unsure which name or descriptor was more appropriate. “It wanted our help naming some sort of virtual creature. We tried to get more information out of it, but… it must have been malfunctioning.”

Even now, the disappointment ate at him.

Again, Vyn glanced over the ship. He searched for anything that might help them enter — some intact sensors or a manual release for the hatch.

“When we were here before, there was a ramp waiting for us, but… that appears to no longer be the case.”

Vyn made a cautious approach, inspecting the area where the ramp had been. He swallowed down his nerves and gazed upon the ship again. Its silhouette was no less haunting than before.

“Reasoner,” he tried, aware that he may be doing so in vain. “We’ve come to speak with you again. May we come in?”

The attempts to get the Reasoner's attention went unanswered. Either it didn't have the external sensors to hear them, or some other malfunction was keeping it from detecting its visitors. Given the direct approach was unsuccessful earlier, this was, perhaps, an opportunity to try something different. Investigating the ship directly might yield more answers if done with caution.

A few details spring to mind:

  • There is a hull breach on one side of the ship where various parts are spilling out.
  • The bathroom has a small ventilation grate a Mauvian could fit through, which likely connects elsewhere in the ship.
  • Numerous cameras are inside, as are numerous cables. They may be hackable.
  • Mauvian and Velencian technology both seem more sophisticated than the ship.

Quote:
This is intended as a stealth game that uses the characters' technological prowess (faction-specific or otherwise) as a means of finding information and avoiding detection. If you wish, you may use one or two members of the team to distract the Reasoner (and attempt to approach it directly again with those characters) as part of your plan.

Logos
Dark Mirror Super

MOOD: Determined
ACTION: Feeling more comfortable

So the ship had a name.

The Reasoner.

Names had meanings... what meaning did this name have? A puzzle within the larger puzzle of their purpose. Right alongside the question of the ship... The Reasoner... creating some kind of virtual creature. A companion? Like some kind of... extraterrestrial Tamagotchi? Why? What was the purpose?
The most simple was that it was simply lonely but... why then wait for them to show up? Was it all coincidence?

And then Vyn acted. Logos waited with her breath held for Vyn's simple question to be answered. Could it be? Could it really be as simple as that? Just as simple as asking and waiting for an answer? Logos hoped against hope that it was, but was not exactly surprised when they were all met with silence. She let out her held breath and turned back to the Valencian.

"I was worth a try," she offered in her best comforting voice.

It was, she knew, not very comforting.

"And you're right, Viatrix. These bots are a scientific wonder. I wish we had more time to spend studying and communicating with them. Maybe we can even convince a few to come with us." More vain hope, she knew, but she dared to hope all the same. "And Sessrumnir is also right. We don't have enough data to be making any assumptions about the bots. We don't have data period. they could simply be friendly bots who are incapable of violence. That being said I'm not suggestion that we be cruel. I'm merely stating that if it comes down to surviving and being polite, we should be choosing the former."

Even if Logos understood Viatrix unwillingness to suspect that the bots had not, in fact, achieve sentience. Sessrumnir was right. It did all seem so amazing and so impossible. Too much so to be true.

"There was a duct," Logos remembered suddenly. "In the bathroom. Air flow, I would suspect. It was too small for me to fit through, but there might be others? Larger ones? If we can find those and get in, then I'm studying to be a data security specialist in school. I can probably get around security walls and figure out at least where we are. Maybe get a little history."

Viatrix
Order Mauvian, Bonded to Encke

MOOD: Resigned
ACTION: A cat now

Sessrumnir's first assumption was correct. She had an approximate knowledge of many things, but most of the time she was more concerned with scientific discoveries than movie discoveries like her bonded was. It resulted in her giving him a half-listen as he further explained the concept to Vyn, though she was still primarily concerned with the robots that had brought up that point of discussion in the first place.

--She still thought that a lot of Earthen movies were incredibly pessimistic. They had never seen sentient mechanical life. Who was to say it was going to go wrong? And who was to say HAL wasn't justified if the humans were legitimately shutting it off--

Viatrix was relieved, though, that Sessrumnir was backing her up. Some level of etiquette was still important, even if they were still in danger, especially because they were dealing with things they just did not know. She supposed it was true too that they didn't know for certain what was happening with these robots, but she shook her head still. "Perhaps their programming was incredibly advanced, but there are still only so many things you can program into AI. Even the closest approximations to sentient interaction we have now still falter, and I just haven't seen that."

Viatrix, though, was relieved that the attempts to communicate with it were reopened, even if it did not respond. It worried her, if it was already so close to malfunctioning. She didn't want to lose what was here. She wanted to preserve it.

Viatrix bounced on her toes as the party debated the next approach.

And then ducts were mentioned.

Of course they were.

She was enjoying being bipedal, especially so since here, she didn't have to worry about disguising herself as a civilian, or the time limits of that, or if any Negaverse agents would catch that she was present-- but she knew what a duct was. A duct was a small space.

And of the mostly very tall people she was surrounded by, there was no one better suited to deal with that than a cat.

"Sometimes, survival requires being polite."

And so, Viatrix the human was then Viatrix the cat.

"Show me? Maybe I can do something useful if I can get closer."

Maybe if she could get inside the ship, there may be a better way to help...
