Preceded immediately by this RP.

Fysarius used the rest of their silent walk to attempt to mentally steel himself for the rest of this encounter. Rationally, he was aware that he couldn't really be mad at Cypher, no matter how difficult it was to bite back the bile that clawed up his throat every time he so much as looked at anyone who'd disobeyed the Commodore at the battle... He couldn't be offended by any of the other Vanguardians for following their hearts and doing what they thought was right-

He just fundamentally disagreed with what they thought was right and couldn't comprehend how anything would compete with the lives of their families and the wellbeing of their home. How could anything- How could one month turn them against the man who'd chosen them and trained them and knew better than them what Velencya needed because it had chosen him, and he had told them what they'd needed to do for their home, and no one had listened-

So he needed to not think about it. Fysarius just needed to not think about it; dash it completely from his mind as if it didn't exist. Wipe the thought away like water draining from glass, and pretend, just for a moment, like nothing had happened...

This world was just where their ship had landed, for a mission like any other they'd been trained for. Just pretend that everything was fine.

Fysarius scratched hard at his skin, nails digging up under the cuff of his bodysuit and picking away at a spot against his wrist, hidden by his uniform. ...It stung, but it was fine. It was fine. Cypher was being pleasant enough, offering to engage him in something they could do together, like they had before. He scraped his tongue against his teeth, trying to will words from his mouth. "Have you arranged a place, then?" Fysarius asked, voice still tight and low, but it was at least some effort to get back on track for why they'd come out together, at all.

“Yes,” he wouldn’t have invited Fysarious out if he didn’t have a destination already selected. “I found this field while out on a hike. It seemed secluded enough that I feel confident that nobody will happen upon us accidentally.” He’d already done a quick scout around the area which revealed no tent communities with homeless civilians and a brief glance at his ComTech now revealed no powered signatures either.

“We’ll be safe enough to practice here.” Cypher felt confident in that fact.

When finally they arrived, the area was rather unassuming. No lights to illuminate the practice area unlike the track field at the school he attended. There were, however, plenty of insects and a couple of creatures that were much larger; flying foxes and owls were two that he’d been told could be found out here.

“Would you prefer to start with stationary targets or go straight into moving?” Targets were brought just in case, but with how their conversations have gone thus far, he felt certain that Fysarious wouldn’t be content standing still for too long.

They were all doing so many more outings than Fysarius could bring himself to do. Cypher went hiking. Ny had taken up practicing in a nearby martial arts studio. Andreiya had a whole greenhouse he'd planted. ...And Fysarius stayed in his room, with his jars scattered across the shelving and his small collection of windowsill plants and the ants who trailed in to eat the fruits the plants bore. He expected others in the house had probably adopted hobbies, as well, but Fysarius hardly spoke to anyone besides Ny, who made it a point to invade his space whenever she could.

He didn't do things like everyone else did, couldn't force himself to like things about this planet where they didn't even belong.

'Safety' was hardly even on Fysarius' radar of things he should be concerned about. Maybe it would be beneficial to put more thought into it, into making sure the humans didn't detect them or that the White Moon and the Negaverse didn't know where to go looking for them if they wanted to start something, but he just... didn't care. Even if they were found, the safety of their house was a teleport away. "That's fine," he agreed dismissively.

The field wasn't so different than where he and Ny had practiced when they'd first arrived... Green, grassy, warm, chittering with the sounds of life, dim beneath a waning moon, with the light pollution from the city obscuring many of the constellations overhead... Fysarius huffed softly.

"You are the one who wanted to come out here," he muttered. "We'll do whatever you think is best. I don't have a preference."

“Fair enough…” Cypher turned and walked about seven or so paces away from Fysarious. Enough to make it seem as if he were undecided.

Shooting at stationary targets would do nothing to help save him from the downward spiral he’d found himself caught up in. It was an often boring exercise that required low effort and minimal sense of achievement if only because the measure of success was to count the number of blaster hits and see how tight the grouping was.

Normally he’d give a count down or time to prepare but with the mood Fysarious was in, Cypher felt like it would be better for his comrade to be able to let that frustration out instead of bottling it up inside. Cypher was used to keeping things mostly to himself, but Fys… this seemed to go against his nature so venomously that he worried that his friend might lash out at someone undeserving of his ire.

His hand came to rest on the blaster attached to his hip and as he pivoted on his heel, Cypher withdrew his weapon from its sheath and fired a warning shot at Fysarious’s feet causing dirt and debris to explode upward about three feet high

"Your move," he turned to retreat towards a more covered area.

He should like it out here. Fysarius knew and acknowledged that this terrain and atmosphere, here in this field with the chittering of insects all around, should be enjoyable for him. At least in terms of what the alternative was, which constituted being in the city, surrounded by its smelly smells and obnoxious humans. The air still felt heavy here, and it was more stimulus than he would've been accustomed to at home, but it was pleasant by comparison to the rest of Earth. He should try to relax, and just do what Cypher had invited him out to do, regardless of how terrible he felt.

That was customary for their people; to smother what feelings were unreasonable.

Fysarius watched as Cypher ambled away. Maybe to uncover whatever equipment he had stored here, since he'd apparently visited the place before, or maybe to set whatever distance between them was appropriate. But Fysarius was watching, and he wasn't blind to the way Cypher's hand settled over his blaster. He jerked back as the other Vanguardian whipped around, scuffing feet against the grass as a shot landed just in front of him, and then Cypher was bolting off.

It took a moment for Fysarius to recover himself. They had come here to shoot, and it was no huge surprise to get to it- He did want this over already; no reason to dally.

But he had never actually used his weapon before.

When they'd first arrived, he'd had a standard issue energy blade, but during the ambush, Fysarius had realized quickly that he wasn't suited to that sort of close quarters combat. He was smaller and weaker than many in the Vanguard, and if he was to be so near to an opponent, Ny would worry, and focus on him more than herself...

Fysarius picked at the bright green energy crystal inlaid into the black wristband as he watched Cypger dive away from him. He'd designed something he thought was more suitable to his needs. It didn't require close-quarters fighting, and it didn't even require that he make perfect shots. He wasn't combat-oriented, so he'd take whatever handicaps he needed. His little spider's thread bracelet would do well at keeping people at a distance, while he did what he needed to do to get uninvolved.

Cypher was already putting distance between them, so maybe that made his own weapon more or less useless, but he didn't have to land a shot on Cypher to see exactly what the threads could do. He extended an arm, pointing toward an area that might have been adequate, and fired off a thread toward the ground in front of where Cypher was headed.
Shanyume
A black metallic wristband with a chartreuse energy crystal inlaid in the center. It is otherwise nondescript. The wristband shoots out an energy thread that is about a foot long and remains on the field for ten seconds. The thread has a magnetic effect that draws things to stick to it (at opposing player’s discretion, such as they could draw in small debris from nearby or entangle part of a limb). A thread can be deployed once every thirty seconds.

Until now, he hadn’t really taken notice that Fysarius neither had a blade nor blaster attached to his hip or backside as many of the other Cadets. This would explain
why Cypher had been expecting a blaster shot; one like Fae-Fae or Andreiya’s weapon maybe but with far less impact, or at the very least a stun his own. Something he could dodge or hide behind a tree to avoid. But that’s not what came at him.
He had to give his comrade credit, it was a tactful decision and along that same vein, highly unanticipated. While he ran, Cypher’s attention was straight ahead as he pushed aside low-hanging tree branches and jumped over shrubs that were about knee-high.

Mid-air in a downward descent from a high leap, Cypher had no room to react to the energy wire that appeared on his right. Its magnetic-like energy pulled small rocks, some leaves and branches to it causing loose debris underfoot. What’s worse was the slight tug he felt on the side of his boot that made his foot slide sideways when he finally landed.

Cypher shot at it with his blaster hoping it would disperse as he pulled his leg away, stumbling a bit in the process.

Cypher was still on the run, but Fysarius hadn't even moved. He was shorter and weaker than the majority of the Vanguard. His physical abilities would likely never outpace any of theirs. And it wasn't a goal of his to pretend otherwise. He wasn't going to engage in a fight he could just as easily get out of.

"I'm not going to chase you," he called to inform Cypher as the other boy scrambled away from the magnetic thread Fysarius had shot a moment ago.

Presumably, if his opponent was running away, they weren't particularly interested, either. And if he was just left to move freely, Fysarius would leave before he tried to antagonize a fight. If someone he wanted to hurt had put their back to him as Cy had, he wouldn't have stood around waiting for them to escape- Fysarius hoped. But he also hoped that there just weren't many people he wanted to hurt... The nails on his curled fist dug into his palm. He was less and less sure there weren't every day.

But not here, and not now. He barely wanted to practice, and he definitely wasn't expending the energy to chase. Fysarius didn't turn from Cypher as he stepped back toward the other side of the field, away from where the other Vanguardian had run. Nothing would please him more than just leaving without having to work for it.

Between the sound of leaves crunching beneath his feet, the low-hanging branches that swept past his face, and the sound of his own heartbeat pounding in his ears from the recent fall, Cypher didn’t hear what Fysarius had shouted only that something had been said. Part of this was because his mind was still startled by the string that his comrade had shot at him. Most other cadets, and a few Commanders, all had either blasters or blades; this alternative weapon was most unexpected.

Even with the snow now melted, finding proper coverage in dim light was still hard to find. Bushes were often a good choice. However, even while hunched, they were usually not as tall as he was and if spotted, nothing would stop a blaster shot from shooting him through the leaves. To add insult to injury, their uniforms did not offer much in the way of camouflage either.

Finding a wide enough tree to hide behind, Cypher rolled his ankle over one of the exposed roots and fell to one knee. He hissed in irritation at his own clumsiness but paid the sprain no mind and instead looked behind him at the narrow opening where Fysarious stood idly in the open. It felt odd that he chose not to hide, but in his own mind this was a training exercise, so he fired a warning shot to give his reluctant participant ten seconds to move otherwise he would not be so kind in missing with the next aim he took with his blaster.

He didn't want to draw this out.

Fysarius had not had the capacity to summon an interest in training since the ambush. He acknowledged the value of it: they'd made enemies of enough people that it was well and truly necessary to stay in peak physical condition, but he'd run out of patience to invest proper time and care into it. He did not want to be running around playing laser tag like he had any interest in doing anything other than what he'd said they were going to do. If they were going to shoot, fine. If it was going to be more complicated than that, he would happily take the opportunity to leave.

And was in the process of doing so when a shot from the trees grazed his sleeve. Fysarius felt a tingle from it more than an actual sting: an energy shot that singed the fabric of his uniform and unraveled the threads in a little smear across his arm but did little to actually damage him.

His focus swiveled down to the little black mar, fingers plucking at it as if it confused him, and then his golden gaze was traveling down the path the bullet had been shot, into the trees, where Cypher had run off. Where Cypher was actively shooting at him. His heart thrummed with something he couldn't identify.

'I'm not going to chase you.'

'I'm not going to chase you.'

Indignation? Why would Cypher push him if he said he wasn't interested? Frustration? From being dragged out here only for his training partner to run off like he was trying to make a sport of it? Red tinged his cheeks as he glared toward the trees. It was a lot of effort that he didn't want to give. Being here was a lot of effort he didn't want to give, but it was too late to do anything about that. And Cypher wanted sport. Fysarius could give him sport.

He tore off across the grass toward the trees, using the trajectory of the bullet to decide where Cypher was hiding. He was not going to sit around hiding and waiting, playing ridiculous games of patience while expecting each other to mess up and give positions away. He wanted this over- over, overoverover-

Fysarius skidded to a stop once he breezed by the other Vanguardian's hiding spot. He lurched a hand out to fist into the high collar of Cypher's uniform, fingers of his other hand balling up as he glared at the man in front of him. Gonna shoot him now?

Cypher had thought that if he remained still enough

then his comrade would continue on past him further into the woods behind him towards the training area he had been trying to lure his friend towards. However, Fysarius had a much keener eye and spotted him easily. He cursed his uniform. The color of it did nothing to help him blend in with his surrounding.

Suddenly there was a fist coming towards him and while he anticipated being hit, he was startingly surprised when it instead grabbed hold of his collar and lifted him up to full height, or close to it. At the very least Cypher was now at eye level with his comrade and what he saw made him sober up immediately.

Hate.

Not mild irritation but seething anger that burned behind Fysarious’s golden eyes. It spoke volumes of emotions that Fysarious had not given voice to. “Perhaps going with what I thought would be best, was not the right decision.” Clearly, he had miss read his friends' needs, and rather than being an outlet for him to let out his frustrations, it seemed that Cypher had managed to add to them if not become the source of more.

Perhaps he shouldn’t have tried to coax Fysarious out of the house, or at the very least told him where they were going and let him decide if he was interested in seeing the training area he had been trying to build. So many mistakes like these made it clear as to why Cypher had little to no friends among the Vanguard let alone in the classes he had been taking at the University.

“My apologies,” he added. Near choked on the words since he was not accustomed to telling anyone he was sorry. And yet, he genuinely felt remorseful for pushing Fys into doing something he clearly wanted no part of.

Nope, Cypher wasn't going to shoot him, apparently.

That should've been enough to give Fysarius pause; if Cypher wasn't going to fight him, they weren't really training. ...Admittedly, it had probably stopped being 'training' when Fysarius took it upon himself to initiate a hand-to-hand assault, which he would never see reason to do in practice. And there surely weren't many reasons for it out in the field, either, since his weapon of choice was physically attached to him. If he was behaving reasonably, he would've realized this was probably outside the scope of training and hinging closer to animosity.

He just wasn't behaving reasonably.

Fysarius' fingers cinched in the collar of Cypher's uniform, making even such hardy fabric strain against where his chipped nails dug into it. Wild golden eyes stared into the other man's wine-red, faces drawn close enough together that they were hardly more than a foot apart. Cypher's voice was tight, struggling to escape his throat where Fysarius' hold dragged at him.

Fysarius should be bothered, but there was nothing resembling recognition at Cypher's struggles that even flit fleetingly through his mind. They were training. Cypher had shot him first. Like the whole rest of everyone in existence, he could only barely be trusted or relied on or believed-

He broke his knuckles with the force of cracking his fist into Cypher's jaw, and didn't even bother to think it strange how little his friend actually resisted him. The grip he had on the other Vanguardian's uniform held steady for one follow-up punch, and then it slid out of his grasp, letting Cypher fall back to the grassy ground. Fysarius followed, slinging one leg over the other's hips to staddle him. They were training- They were just training- Cypher had wanted to train. And it shouldn't be Fysarius' job to help him out of something he'd wanted to do-

He took a third shot with his off-hand at Cypher's cheek, expression twisted into something wholly unrecognizable.

He had expected Fysarious to let go of him, to back off in a huff and perhaps go back to the house they’d been staying at- something he refused to call home since this city, this planet, was anything but that.

Unfortunately, he drastically misjudged the situation and exactly how Fysarious was, not just at the situation they’d all found themselves in, but at him. The first blow to the side of his face left him seeing large black spots in his vision as he reeled backward; his heel caught a root and sent him sprawling on his backside atop the dew-laden grass.

Too stunned to move, or react properly, had left him wide open for his comrade- no... opponent to pin him down and take another swing. He brought both arms up in a guard to protect his face but his reaction time was slow and while he was able to partially deflect the second hit, Fysarious still managed to connect with the side of his eye, his knuckle catching Cypher’s eyebrow with enough force that it broke the skin and bled rather freely.

A third swing descended upon him, however, this time Cypher was not idle in his response. With both hands, he reached out to grab hold of Fysarious’ uniform and pull him down to close and towards his right shoulder as he bucked his hips to try and unseat him. With the weight atop him shifted, he rolled to his side, tucked his knees up, and moved out from under Fys.

He maneuvered in such a way that when Cypher got to his knees he quickly reached out and hooked an arm around his opponent's neck. He then pulled him back against his chest and held him in a rear naked choke hold. A move meant to cut off oxygen to the brain, not inhibit his ability to actually breathe.

“Enough,” he grunted through clenched teeth, an action that caused his head to throb with incredible pain. Cypher was more than certain that his jaw was broken and within the next couple hours, his eye would be swollen shut.

It had taken... longer than Fysarius might have expected for Cypher to retaliate against him? Which should have seemed bizarre given how prepared he ought to be to meet opposition during training he had instigated. They should always be prepared. This world was hazardous. The people were practically animals. Everyone was an enemy, and the Vanguard had been taught to fight for a reason.

But the sportsmanly thing to do would've been to pull back as soon as Cypher was on the ground. They were meant to be allies. But he didn't think about it. The other man should be ready for worse, anyway.

By the third swing, Cypher had regained enough of his wits to move. They grappled on the ground for a span of seconds. Fysarius was not caught off guard, was not idle, and he was going to- He didn't know what his goal was. It didn't matter. 'Hurt' was probably his main focus, and there was a dense fog of adrenaline keeping him moving coupled with ease of practice. His typical training partner excelled in hand-to-hand. He'd always wanted to try and meet her high standards.

Cypher twisted behind him, an arm circling around Fysarius' neck. It wasn't prime positioning, but Fysarius still had more than enough experience to escape on auto-pilot. One hand flew to the side of Cypher's head, fisting in his hair to jerk him to one side while the other cupped up under his elbow, notching it up as he tucked his chin against the crevice in the joint.

The other man's breathing was harsh in his ear. Fysarius' own hissed between his teeth as his heart hammered. He probably hadn't been so active in several months...

A drop of blood dribbled off Cypher's chin and landed stark red against the pale greyish tone of his uniform. He could only barely even see it out of the corner of his eye. Couldn't see Cypher's face at all. He went stone still, body still tipped precariously forward on his knees to create space between them, one hand latched into Cypher's hair, another shoving at his elbow. A tremor rippled down the length of his spine as another little droplet plipped close to Fysarius' neck.

Rationally, he was aware it was no damage their medicine couldn't fix without a trace.

But he had never hurt anyone enough to need it.

Even when he and Ny trained together, there was scarcely more than a few bruises, and neither of them went ham trying to beat each other's faces in, regardless of what medicine could heal. His golden eyes flicked to the side, searching for Cypher's face while still holding his position. To no avail. He could still mostly only see shoulder and chest. With a rough exhale, he tipped his head back, ceasing the hair pulling and shoving on the other man's arm, and the hook of his elbow fit neatly over his throat. "C-Cypher...?" Fysarius whispered softly.

With his heart hammering against his chest and adrenaline coursing through his veins, Cypher could barely register Fysarius’ voice.

The sharp pain in his jaw when he clenched his teeth was distracting enough, coupled with his narrowing vision from the eye that was swelling shut and dull pounding in his head from where Fys had grabbed a fist full of hair so hard it felt like he’d been scalped if only a dagger had been held to his hairline. Fortunately, that was not Fysarius’ preferred weapon. A small silver lining- as humans often said when something good came out of a horrible situation.

Still- Cypher’s mind didn’t initially register that his hair had been let go, or that his comrade had stopped trying to push away his arm. He was functioning on the notion that Fysarius was still a threat to him.

He knew that one good headbutt from the back of Fysarius’ head would have ended this fight in his favor. But, between heavy breaths, he could feel that his movement stilled. Cy- Blood from his brow ran down the side of his face onto Fys’ uniform.

Cypher gradually released the pressure until he was certain that this fight was in fact over. “You know your way back-” he stood, the taste of iron filled his mouth and after rising unsteadily to his feet, he turned his head and spat a mouthful of blood onto the ground beside him. Any intent he had to bring Fysarius to the training ground he had been building was pushed to the wayside.

Turning away from the house they’d been staying, not home- never would he call this place home. Cy turned his back to the one Vanguard he thought that he could call a friend; now he wasn't sure opening himself up to that was a good idea.

Fysarius shivered as Cypher stepped around him and unsteadily moved to head back toward the house alone. He did know his way back, and anyone with half a functioning brain cell would probably reason that Fysarius didn't really want to be around anyone else, and Cypher more than likely didn't want to be around him at the moment, either, if the blood trailing down the other man's face or the throbbing Fysarius felt in his knuckles was any indication. The implication to Cypher's words seemed to be that Cy would go now, and Fysarius should follow him at a reasonable distance. Separately.

He knew he was personally in the wrong.

He knew Cypher had been trying to 'bond' with him, and Fysarius had been grumpy and belligerent from the start, and now outright abusive was thrown into the mix as well. For whatever Fysarius felt toward their situation, toward the mission, toward the rest of the Vanguard, it wasn't really Cypher's fault in any way that merited actual aggression, no matter how Fysarius felt about it.

...And a very shameful part of him did think, 'Good. I probably won't have to deal with this in the future. Cypher knows better now.' He flexed his fingers, could already see mottled grey-purple coloration forming over the back of his hand, and there had been something so close to relief at just... feeling his upset so wholly.

It hadn't lasted long, and heartache followed.

He didn't want Cypher to leave him. He didn't want to feel ostracized and alone, like an outcast for hating this world and not caring about its residents unlike everyone else on the mission. Fysarius didn't know what he wanted to do about it, but he knew it was unreasonable to expect Cypher to want- anything?- to do with him now. That was what Fysarius deserved, for being willing to hurt someone who tried to include him, who was probably feeling as lost as he was...

Fysarius' cheeks burned and his eyes stung, and that felt more prevalent than the more potent ache in his bones. Sit here and wait, alone, until Cypher made it back to the house. Pitiful.

Or...

He jerked himself to his feet, not stumbling near as much as the other man had as he'd departed, and bolted for the trees across the clearing before Cypher could make it fully out of his sight. He deserved Cypher's upset and any reproach he'd receive. There was probably a nonzero chance the other cadet wouldn't even let Fysarius touch him, but he was going to try, anyway. That was... probably kinder than letting what should be his friend stumble back to the house alone. He touched a hand to Cypher's shoulder blades as he approached, tucked his head so that he could take Cy's other arm and loop it over his shoulders to help support him.

Once at his side, Fysarius dared to glance to the other's bruised and bloodied face, fully seeing for the first time the damage he'd inflicted. "I'm sorry," he whispered. "You don't have to talk to me. You should be upset. But I want to at least make sure you get back to the house okay..."
