History:
The Past:
Born to two slaves, Kani has never had a life of privilege. Her father was a hard working laborer while her mother was kept as a pretty house servant for an Oban noble. Despite being slaves to their fiery oppressors, they all lived a relatively happy life. Unfortunately for them, the good things didn't last. The noble of the house her mother had been working for had taken an interest in her, much to their displeasure. Her mother refused the noble's advances, and in return was killed for her retaliation. Now that the three of them are free, they've made their way slowly back to Matori, her and her father taking care of her younger brother as they went. Though young Kani wishes to explore and see things better beyond Oba and Matori, she knows that it is her duty to stay with her father and help raise her brother since her mother is gone. So for now she stays in the village, helping all those she can while raising her younger brother and practicing her magical abilities.
Other Information:
What makes her continue is her father's expectations as well as knowing it is what her mother would have wanted. Deep down Kani is a kind soul that would like to trust people, but she was greatly affected by her mother's death and how someone could just up and kill such a wonderful woman. Really her sense of duty drives her to help even when she thinks she shouldn't. She doesn't want to disappoint her family by not doing what's right. When she does get angry she makes sure to go and hide somewhere away from others so she can rage to herself. Not exactly the healthiest way of dealing with anger, but she would rather not burden anyone with her rage, especially when she starts to cast magic at trees.
The way she found out about her mother's death is by another Matori servant her mother had been very close friends to while working with. Unfortunately they were never able to recover the body (playing around with some things about what really happened to her mother, but for the moment just saying she's dead) so they never had a proper funeral for her. Her younger brother was so young when it happened that he never really knew their mother. All he knows is she was a wonderful woman and his sister and father loved her very much. As for her father, he spends his time overworking himself and trying to do his best to provide for his family. He loved his wife very much and was extremely distraught over the fact that such a thing had happened, but for the sake of his children he put aside his own feelings to be strong for them. He tries his best not to be distant from his children and would one day like to get married again, but for now his family comes first which is what his wife would have wanted. Once Arthanon gets a bit older he may do more with his life, but for now he and Kani work to simply survive.
The Present:
Now that Arthanon is a teenager, Kani has no reason to stay around. She spent her time practically raising her brother and helping her dad, and while she did hone her skills she has nowhere to go with them now. She's currently lost and wandering, trying to find her own place in the world where she can fit in and enjoy her time. While struggling to find her place, she continues to look for those who need a hand or a job done. Struggling to hold much of a conversation, most find her quiet and odd. The young woman who doesn't say much but does what is asked of her. Her lingering regrets have weighed heavily on her and forced her to look inward and ask herself what she should do now.
