(1/10)
As excited as Morain was to get Kani that vacation she so dearly needed, it was another few days' travel to the closest settlement that actually had an inn, and the first night they got to town he paid the money for a shared room, offered her the bed (like the gentleman he was pretending to be), then crawled onto a sleep palette on the floor to pass out to sleep. The next day, they rested, and explored the town.
Morain had seen Tale architecture before, but it never failed to impress him, the ornate web of trees woven together over generations to form a living, breathing network of trees and buildings. He took Kani on a tour of the village, pausing here and there to take in the sheer height of the platforms, perusing shops while not too subtly taking the pulse of the town to see if there was any work available.
Finally, night drew closer, and Morain turned to Kani, planting a hand on his stomach. "Honestly, I would die for a good supper. To the inn?"

Kani had been starry eyed the entirety of their time in the town they'd wandered into, and given her unfamiliarity with the area had trailed close to Morain's side. At the mention of food her own stomach gave a growl of protest, sheepish smile spreading across her face as she looked towards the inn. Zoryn too bounced around her feet, his soft huffs of noise through his nostrils alerting her that he too needed to eat. She pressed her fingers to her own bare stomach and nodded, turning to head back to the inn. "Supper sounds fantastic, especially given our day of exploring. Do you think they have any specials for non-locals?" She didn't exactly know what a special would be other than a lack of fish. "Maybe lots of berries given the trees?" The warmth of the inn was comforting as she wandered in, though the innkeep always eyed Zoryn with a bit of disdain despite his good behavior. "Perhaps I could assist with work here in exchange for some food so we don't have to keep using our funds?"

(2/10) Specials? Morain tapped his chin thoughtfully, humming. "Berries are a good bet." he agreed. So, they fell into step together, following the walkways until they returned to the inn. A muscled leaf man stood at the entrance, and the night before Morain had been sure he was a bouncer of some kind, ready to kick out anyone causing a fuss. However, on second thought he supposed the man was there to keep people inside instead; the last thing you wanted, at an inn, was for drunken patrons to fall off the walkways, right?
Morain smiled at the guy as he passed, noting that he would've been his type (as far as guys went), if he wasn't on a mysteriously timed binge of chastity recently. Inside, it wasn't quite crowded yet; many were still out working, as it wasn't properly dark. But behind the counter, the staff were hard at work, and already the smell of various meals cooking made his stomach rumble.
"They look like they could use an extra set of hands." Morain conceded, although his mind immediately went to the sort of rowdy patrons places like this got. His expression briefly turned cloudy, imagining someone getting drunk and handsy with Kani, or smacking her as she passed, carrying trays and drinks. "Though if you're up working all night, you won't get a chance to see things on your off days." He cleared his throat, then hastily pulled out a chair for her, then sat primly in his own seat.

Kani chewed her lip as she listened to him speak, nearly missing the chair as she distractedly took a seat with Zoryn curling around her feet. "Mm. That's fair. And it would mean less time spent together which is not ideal," she admitted, reaching over and patting Morain's hand. She noted the shift in his expression, her brows knitting together in concern. She squeezed his hand lightly then and tilted her head towards the food being made. "Considering eating them out of business?" Kani teased, trying to distract him from whatever thought had darkened his expression in a way she hadn't really seen before. It concerned her and despite not knowing what the issue was she wanted to fix it. "I can go ask them to hurry with food. Or drink. Whatever you would like, dear," she continued to try and soothe, thumb brushing against the top of his hand.

(3/10) Right. Less time together. His stormy expression was short lived, when she offered such a sweet response. He settled, flashing her a somewhat sheepish smile, because it was obvious she'd caught his look. "It smells good, doesn't it?" He agreed, in a rush. Though - his brain latched onto that one, honey-sweet nickname.
Did Kani know she'd said it? Did she mind that she had? Would her cheeks go purple in a blush if he pointed it out, or would she just give a little smile and shrug. Was it special, or just something sweet to call her friend? He desperately wanted to know, but the part of himself that was continuing to steadfastly pretend he was being good, and NOT pursuing her that way just because she was lovely and pretty, insisted he just leave it alone.
"Drink? Oh! Right. Drink! That wine we talked about, right?" He brightened, turning his hand so he could squeeze hers in turn, even going so far as to thread them together so he could squeeze her fingers. "No, don't worry your pretty head, I'll take care of it. Let's get a nice spread of all the delicacies, and then worry about jobs tomorrow!"
He winked, squeezed her hand again, then let go as he stood and went to the counter.

Kani was pleased to see the change in Morain's expression, relaxing more into her chair and watching him wander off. Morain was a beautiful figure amongst the sea of leaf beings around them. She worried that they would take advantage of him being an outsider, but quickly waved the thought away. Morain was more experienced than she was. He could handle it far better than she would be able to. "I think he's someone I'd like to keep being around. What do you think, Zoryn?" Kani spoke softly, petting the zanteer idly. Zoryn perked his ears but otherwise stayed curled around her and ignored her words. It was silly to say something out loud to him, especially given the fact she was sure Morain didn't consider her like that. She didn't even know what he thought of her. They were friendly with each other, and often touched hands or bumped shoulders, but what did that even mean???

(4/10) It was early enough that the innkeeper didn't look too put out by their order, despite it being a bit of a spread. With his order placed, he waited briefly for a decanter of alcohol and a small platter of nuts to eat as they waited, then returned to the table, pouring Kani a cup, leaning briefly into her space as he did so.
"I thought it was ale, but I was sternly corrected. Wine. Apparently, ale is more for Sauti and Zenan fare." He shrugged, then poured himself a cup then sat down, popping a nut into his mouth. "Okay, dear moment of truth - what do you think of the wine?" He watched intently, taking a slow sip of his own drink. It was sweet on his tongue, not like the more sour drinks he was used to from Yael. The sweetness hit him like a cart, making him shiver before he took another sip.

Kani felt her face heat and quickly took a large chug from the wine glass, sputtering while she considered the taste. It was sweet, but burned as it went down and warmed her far more than she had expected. A soft giggle spilled from her lips, fingers brushing against the glass. Oh that was nice. Wine was good, very good. Kani eagerly took another sip, some trailing down her chin with the unsteadiness of her hand. "Good. Very good. I like this. Do you like this? Is it better with me here?" Kani laughed more, reaching over and squeezing Morain's arm. Her head already felt fuzzy and she didn't know how much more it was going to get.

(5/10) Morain continued to take slow sips from his glass, watching Kani over the rim of it. He was once again thankful for the uniqueness of his eyes, as it allowed him to greedily watch without betraying just what he was watching. Though, he was absolutely tracking the slow descent of wine as it trailed from her lip, leaving a purple trail to her chin. If she licked her lips, he felt he might actually die, or combust into flames then and there.
He shouldn't be staring at his companion, his friend like this.
He was stirred from his guilty thoughts by Kani's sweet giggle, and the touch of her hand against his arm. His skin tingled where she touched.
"Of course - I could ask for no better company." He enthused immediately. "Here, darling, eat a bit - you never want to drink on an empty stomach."
Morain didn't give her a chance to do it herself - instead, he plucked up one of the nuts and raised it to her lips, taking the opportunity to use a knuckle to brush the bead of wine from her face, hopefully without causing too much of a fuss.

Kani smiled and brushed her lips against his finger as she accepted the offered snack, looking up at Morain innocently. "Reeeally?" she drawled out, lips continuing to brush against him while she spoke. She couldn't tell if it was the wine causing her to flush or the somewhat intimate situation they were now in, but either way Kani was enjoying their time. The wine loosened her usual filter on her words, her desire to tell Morain what she thought hanging heavy on her tongue. "You're incredible, have I told you that? If not, maybe I should tell you more."
She continued to enjoy the way her lips brushed against his skin, reaching her hand out to draw him a bit closer to her.

(6/10) There wasn't a single spark in his brain that imagined she could be doing this on purpose, so of course the wine had to be the culprit. To him, Kani seemed ... not innocent, exactly, but far from flirtatious. The wine, or at least the excitement of getting wine and drinking with a friend, could make anyone excited and playful, and yet the flush of her cheeks suggested the wine was hitting her hard already.
He should have pulled his hand back the moment she accepted the treat, but he kept it close instead, thumb drawn against her lip. Morain leaned in close, quite without realizing he had even done so, and he couldn't have looked away from her if he tried.
"Coming from you, that's high praise." He whispered back, almost like they were sharing secrets. "Kani, I--" He opened his mouth, not really knowing what would tumble out - a confession? Some heart soppingly sentimental words about how beautiful she was?
He wouldn't know, because a peppy barmaid appeared at their table with a tray of aromatic smelling food. "Hello lovebirds! 'scuse me here, just need some space to put this down -- "
Morain blinked, then jolted back, leaving space for the barmaid to set down a platter of various foods, ranging from nutloaf, sweet-glazed roots, and thin slices of pale, unidentifiable meat. He didn't look at Kani, and instead scrambled to pull out a few coins as a tip for the girl.

Kani made a face at the sudden distance between them, turning to look at the barmaid with an easy smile. "Thank you very much," Kani nodded, eagerly sipping at more wine before reaching over and stuffing a glazed root into her mouth. After waiting for the barmaid to leave Kani turned back to Morain and leaned close once more. He had been planning to say something, his voice soft and inviting. She wanted to hear what it was. "Tell me, dear. What were you going to say?" she asked just as softly, tapping her fingers up his arm in a gentle rhythm. "I'll listen to whatever you want to tell me."Another giggle came over her, battering her eyelashes at him. Did it make her look more enticing? Was that what she was trying to be? Or more convincing? Maybe that was the one?

(7/10) This was the time for Kani to come to her senses, and realize that she was sitting very close. This was the chance for her to snap to attention and pull away, put space between them, dismiss what... ever it was that might've been happening, and move along. Instead, she didn't so much as blink, just enjoyed a bite of their hard-won food, sipped more wine, then turned those gorgeous eyes back on him. He wanted to fall back into it just as easily, to return his hand to her face again, maybe even boldly reach to touch her hair, like he'd wanted to since that night she burst into his tent.
It was so tempting. And why shouldn't they? Why did he think Kani couldn't be just as capable as he was in finding him fetching, and seeking a bit of companionship on the road of a more - physical sort? Why shouldn't they enjoy their travels together, with a bit of wine to make things flow easier? It had never been difficult for him, before, to throw back a few glasses of ale or wine and fall into bed with someone for carnal pleasures that didn't mean anything.
The tap tap tap of her fingertips on his arm, and she giggled almost coquettishly, and he wanted so fiercely it scared him, because this was Kani and he didn't think he'd be able to pull himself out of her arms the moment he fell into them.
Morain realized he'd been biting his lip, and instead took in a deep breath, before awkwardly reaching to pat her hand, where it was tapping at his arm. "Don't worry about it. It's a little serious, for a conversation over wine with friends."

Wine with friends. Friends. Right. Even through the slight haze of the wine she disliked the way Morain had said that. There wasn't anything necessarily wrong with what he'd said. They were friends, of course they were, but she didn't like how it sounded. It was wrong! Kani leaned back in her chair, sour look on her face as she busily shoved another bite of food into her mouth. She looked sidelong between Morain and the food, forcing herself to aggressively chew it and ignore the words. "I see. Pardon my question," she grumbled, biting down hard on her lip. "I did not mean to pry."There was an awkwardness to her movements, her hands settling in different places. She couldn't quite decide what she wanted to do with them other than placing them on Morain - which was a big no especially given his words. She'd been reading too much into it, of course.

(8/10) Morain heard how it sounded the moment the words left his mouth, and immediately winced. If there was any doubt that Kani had been flirting, it was gone now when she snapped away from him with such an unhappy look on her pretty face. The sudden space between them felt like a chasm, and the sidelong looks made him want to squirm.
"Kani, it's not - you're not pr-, I just-" He trailed off, then sighed.
The cowardly part of him wanted to get up and run away with a half-baked apology, but his mind went to the handsome bouncer outside the inn, and to any number of good looking leaf men enjoying drinks and dinner after a long day of work. Would Kani go to one of them instead? Or - or, would one of them catch her after too much wine, in a vulnerable position?
No, no he wouldn't flee. Morain was quiet for a moment, then slowly helped himself to a few bites of the food, which now tasted like ash in his mouth.
He wanted to lean into her space again, or apologetically touch her hand, or bump their knees together under the table, but the fear she'd make a face at him or move away kept him from trying it. Instead he sipped half heartedly at his wine, swallowing a mouthful after a moment of contemplation. "This wine is pretty strong, for your first time drinking." He said very softly, almost unsure if he should even say it.
