I do want to share some (tentative) future plans I have for this character. I don't want him to grow up and live an easy life, in fact I want him to be challenged and forced to grow and make a name for himself, not off of his parent's dime. Which will happen pretty quickly with a rude awakening. Here's the milestone timeline:
(P) News comes out that his father's gambling addiction has all but bankrupted the family. As it spreads through the high-class Obans, the family begins to be ostracized and distanced. (P) Backed into a corner and threatened by loan sharks, Firbrand's father flees in the middle of the night with what little heirlooms they have left, leaving his wife and son with a shell of a home and nothing to their name. The authorities appear, and take the home and all other valuables to pay off the massive debts. Firbrand and his mother are penniless.
(S2) Firbrand's mother is distressed, having been blindsided by the situation she falls into a depression leaving her all but comatose. Firbrand is forced to step up and figure out a way to get them someplace to stay. (S2) As he procures a temporary home out of the city, Firbrand returns to find his mother has passed away. Without his mother, or his extended family, Firbrand is left on his own and leaves the city.
(S3) Firbrand works to begin establishing his value, using what little education he has to move up in business and start making deals. He becomes cold and shrewd, trusting no one and absolutely despising those who offer shady business deals. Eventually, he makes enough small business deals to begin gathering money, and building up a reputation.
(S4) Nowhere near where he once was, Firbrand is now self-made well off, his drive and desire to prove himself meaning he has a comfortable lifestyle. His goal is to never repeat his father's mistakes, and hopefully he's found a partner who he can provide for, but they focus on building an empire to take care of their children/future family.
History:Ohrai Jothan was an aristocrat Oban, used to the luxury and riches of the world. She grew up as the daughter of a general, wanted for nothing, and lived comfortably well into adulthood. Most of her days were spent traveling with the other ladies to places of entertainment; races, battles, entertainers...everything was a luxury to Ohrai and she wanted nothing.
Eventually, she took a small trip across the sea. The boat was made for a casual journey, filled with comfortable spaces and fatty foods. It was more of a cruise than a trip, and the goal was to travel to Belrea, rest for a few days, before returning. Many of the patrons were younger than Ohrai, who spent more time living off her parents than finding a partner, and she ended up spending most of her off-shore leave on her own.
It was during a trip to the more expensive part of town where she stumbled upon a Lightning investor named Henroy Ambrose.
Henroy was a businessmen and salesmen, he was slick and said all the right things. He saw an opportunity in Ohrai, who complained about love. He knew she would be an easy way to get access to money, even if he didn't love her. He was a man of business, and it was an opportunity. The only thing he really needed to do was keep her content, and he figured a child would do just that. So while Henroy worked to build up his empire in Oba, Ohrai showed off her newest creation - Firbrand.
The young boy was quite the delight for the nobles. Sure, he was a hybrid, but his coloring was so fascinating, like bright flames, and he was the future heir of the great Jothan empire.
As Firbrand grew up, influenced by his mother's need for riches and his father's desire for power, he too took on the worst traits of each. He became egotistical with his looks always doted upon, only expected the best of the world as it was what was given to him, and desired the greatness he was promised.
Little did he know about the splintering of his family behind closed doors, and would never truly understand the reality until it was too late.
