Hi everyone! Expecting my first here, I'm almost at 17 weeks!! I've been lucky enough to not have morning sickness, so I've still been happily eating. I haven't necessarily had cravings either, but lately with Christmas... oh my gosh the fudge, the cookies... I've been eating so many sweets!!! emotion_drool
And all weekend, it's been rough... just with work, visiting friends and family, my husband getting sick. I've barely slept! I'd be lying if I said I didn't drink more coffee than usual, well at least Christmas. I know technically I'm allowed so much caffeine, so I've tried to stick with a small cup of decaf some days, or if I drink pop at all is usually sips here and there or splitting with my husband. I know I overdid it on Christmas, but one day shouldn't hurt anything I'm sure.
I guess if I've had any craving, I've been seriously wanting imitation crab lately... that was a small snack I got hooked on when I was younger. My ob/gym said I'm allowed seafood twice a month, but I've still been fighting that urge. They also ok'd meats from like subway or sandwich places basically because they've been cooked/processed in a safe manner, so I'm sure if I've had a snack every so often it might be fine, but I've still been trying to avoid a lot of it. Man, the food thing is HARD!

Anyway, how about any of you? How'd you deal with the food during pregnancy? Any cravings? Advice?

Sweets are a big weakness to me in general, but I figure that's due to a lot of my nutritional deficiencies and such.

During pregnancy, the sweet cravings were simply awful - simply put. Then again, I had gestational diabetes that went undiagnosed (long story).

Second child, though, I still wanted Kit-Kat bars like every evening.

I also wish I wouldn't have given in to them. My medication along with nutritional deficiencies and I think sugar made it worse - my kids had poor dental health. There's not a day that goes by that I don't blame myself for that. I'm almost too afraid to have another child because I'm afraid their teeth will be terrible...it might not happen, but clearly something isn't right. Trying to get all my nutrition back up to where it needs to be before I even try to conceive again, but I worry about running out of time before I get there, too.

I have heard of some mom's freezing grapes for a sweet tooth fix. I've never tried that, but do enjoy them regularly either way, but perhaps having them frozen does a bit more? Perhaps makes it harder to eat the whole bag? rofl

I remember eating sushi during my pregnancies - it was one of the few things that even calmed my morning sickness. I heard about the risk, but if pregnant women in Japan can do it, I figure it would probably be okay if it was a place I trusted the sushi from that hadn't gotten me sick - I wouldn't walk into any sushi place. I never had any problems there, but it wasn't a daily thing either (sushi is so expensive) and I would make sure to choose fish that weren't on the high-mercury list.

I've heard of expectant mom's eating deli meats plenty, but a lot of times they would make sure it was heated up to a good temperature first. If I got Subway, I would opt to have my sandwich toasted if I ended up getting that. Not sure if it would have made a difference either way.

I remember craving basically anything sweet with my first and in large amounts, but I fought myself to try more fruits and berries than slices of cheesecake, but little did I know there my body wasn't cooperating with that well because I craved it so heavily.

With my second, it was totally Kit-Kat Bars and Reese's Pieces Cups. Either that, or McDonald's chicken nuggets. gonk I wish I had like a healthier craving like pickles or something - that would've been great.

It's always hard being due in the spring because of all the holidays! That's where I have a bad habit of slipping on my diet the most. The sweets are literally everywhere! It's not just avoiding them at the grocery store, it's perhaps office parties and school functions and perhaps a neighbor saying, "Hey, I made this tray of cookies for you." or something...it's nearly impossible to escape.

Although, I'm trying to get better and I know my kids can't have a lot of foods so holidays are difficult for them and we always try to get something that they can tolerate. It's hard when you have Santa in front of the grocery store giving out candies to kids.

Pretty much as far as cravings in pregnancy, I didn't deal with them - I just did them emotion_facepalm I kind of wish I would've fought myself a bit more, though, because I craved junk the entire time. I know if I was ever pregnant again, I'd be fighting everything in me to stay away from the sweets and opt for a healthier alternative.

Normally my husband is the one that can't stay away from sweets. I usually eat pretty healthy honestly. But when it's the time for sweets and stuff you don't get often... yeah I want them. emotion_drool
And coffee... I've stayed away from coffee for such a long time once I got a taste of it again... it just tastes so good and I want it. sad
I've been trying to drink more water than I usually would, and juice... if I go for pop I usually try for root beer, but that's not always an option when I go out.
I eat pickles/olives constantly but I don't like crave them... I've just always snacked on them. It's been an argument with my friends for a while she claims it's a craving, but I've literally always ate pickled things for as long as I could remember. Then it doesn't help our roommate left like 3 jars of pickles in our fridge when he left, then I just found 2 more... like... what do you do with how many jars of pickles? gonk
My favorite thing is the pickle wrapped with cream cheese and deli meat, and I just want those constantly... that and the imitation crab. Probably because I know I shouldn't eat them? I mean, should I just give in and eat some of these things when I want them or just try really hard to fight it?

That's good that you eat healthier. I was so envious of one of my friends who didn't have a sweet tooth. She'd go trick or treating with me and stuff and have a whole bucket of candy sitting on her desk all year long. It would go bad because she never would finish it all...wouldn't even get close. The bucket was full by the next Halloween lol. I was usually so mad deep down that she wouldn't give it all to me.

Coffee is so interesting...I'm not a huge coffee person, either. I generally stay away. Sometimes coffee doesn't make me feel right at all so I avoid it, but I get what you're saying...sometimes there are those days or those times...it's addictive, too.

Haha, some people are crazy about pickles, I guess. xd My husband told me his mom used to eat plenty of pickles on a normal basis and she would save the jar and drink the pickle juice.

I like pickles once in a while, but they were never a favorite. I can't stand olives. One time at a party, the host was getting something out of the fridge and tossing one to everyone and they're like, "Want some?" and I thought it was grapes, so I said, "Sure!" I put it in my mouth...not a grape! Not a grape! gonk I also found another person in my life that doesn't like olives because of that experience. They are good for you, though! Pickles can be good for you, too.

I guess in the end, what you eat is up to you because you and your body probably knows what is best for you and baby. I looked at what other cultures normally eat during pregnancy and their diets are much more lax about what pregnant women eat than our diet. Some things probably with good reason are more restricted here, though like mercury filled fish...

Imitation crab tastes good sometimes, but it's hard to find good quality ones here, though. The only ones I find here have red dye and all sorts of stuff we can't have so we don't buy it. At the same time, it is probably healthier than a candy bar or a can of soda.
