Aliez hung his head in shame. After he and Vyn had been apprehended and told they had apparently been shopping incorrectly, they had been escorted down a long hallway and into a small room where they were told to sit and call their parents. It seemed as though the humans weren’t entirely sure what to make of them. They had been accused of stealing and ruining merchandise, but they hadn’t exactly made any attempt to hide what they had with them. “We apologize. This exchange of currency is unfamiliar to us. We would have made the exchange at the appropriate place but--” “Exchange of-- Do you even hear yourself? Where are you from? Mars?” the man with the rather unsightly facial hair snorted in amusement at his own joke, but Aliez frowned in concern. “We are from the planet Earth. The third planet of the Sol System and--” He couldn’t finish because the man was laughing too hard at that point.

Like Aliez, Vyn hung his head. Unlike Aliez, Vyn could not speak. They’d made a nuisance of themselves to these humans, which meant they made a nuisance of themselves to their own comrades, which meant they made a nuisance of themselves to the Commodore. They were told their parents must be contacted, but that would be impossible; their parents could not come for them here. The only thing currently working in their favor was that their ComTech looked enough like what these Earthlings knew as a “smart watch” (what sort of imaginative name was that?) that no one questioned that they managed to get a call out to their own people through it. Vyn could not look at the man with the facial hair, who claimed to be some sort of security official. He could not look at Aliez. He could only look down at his feet, drowning in shame. They had failed to blend in. Everything they meant to purchase had been confiscated from them. At this point, Vyn didn’t care to purchase any of it. He merely wanted to leave before they brought even more shame onto themselves.

Lyndin had not hesitated to respond to the emergency call of two Cadets, no matter the circumstances. Shoplifting at the mall hadn’t been something he expected to have to respond to, but he was there in as little time as possible. Of course he’d hurried, he didn’t like the idea that anyone was holding members of the Vanguard, that he needed to show up so they could be released. He wore something of a sour expression when he arrived, not in the slightest at Aliez or Vyn, but because someone was detaining them. His glamour did him as much justice as it could; he wasn’t used to the warm skin tone, and on the way over he caught sight of his hand a few times and didn’t recognize it as his own. He was every bit as tall, every bit as built, every bit as put together as he was in his true skin. His ears were round, his pupils were round. It didn’t do much to soften him. His hair and eyes remained the same, and he arrived looking like he was ready to do business. He wore a well fitting suit, and somehow managed to not look uncomfortable out of his uniform. When he arrived, he immediately looked over the two Cadets and, satisfied that neither appeared hurt, he did not launch into an attack. Yet. He had little care for the disheveled captor of his Vanguard and was ready to do battle at the slightest provocation. And yet, he managed a tense, polite smile. “I received a call,” he said, because that was obviously explanation enough. “I’m here to pick these two up.”

Aliez could pretty much feel Vyn’s shame that he felt radiating off of him, which just meant that Aliez had to sit a little straighter and make sure that the man who was the security official of some sort didn’t make Vyn feel even worse than he already did. It wasn’t their fault that they didn’t know Earth’s weird customs, but it was their fault that they failed to blend in. They should have been more cautious. Should have observed the humans more before doing anything. And now the Commodore was there and had to get them out of that situation. Aliez felt both relieved to see the man who was unmistakably Commodore Lyndin, and ashamed that he had to come and rescue them to begin with. “These kids yours?” the security official asked as he shoved some crumbly snack food into his mouth. It made an unattractive crushing noise when he chewed. Aliez cringed and tried not to think about it. And he tried not to correct the man in saying that they were absolutely not the Commodore’s children. “Hang on, they can’t just leave without having a report filed. They were caught stealing from various stores. And licking candles. All these dang TikTokers. Here’s what they were caught trying to steal,” the man said, apparently very proud of himself for doing his job and catching underage criminals. He placed the candle, silky panties, and flower crown on the surface of the desk, and looked at both Aliez and Vyn. “Well? What do you have to say for yourselves?” “We apologize and it will not happen again, as I already said,” Aliez said through gritted teeth, already beyond embarrassed. He didn’t need this harassment on top of everything. And he didn’t want Vyn to get in trouble. “I take responsibility for the incident and will accept my punishment. It will not happen again.”

Vyn looked up. Oh. Oh. The Commodore made a magnificent human. Of course he did; he was a magnificent man. Even though it was strange to see him like this, Vyn could not help but feel relieved. The Commodore would know what to do, even if this situation was new. The Commodore always knew what to do, and if he didn’t… Well, he was better at improvising than two young Cadets. Just one look from the Commodore should put these Earthlings in their place. Except the security official didn’t seem impressed. How rude. Then the question registered, and Vyn was horrified. This man thought they were the Commodore’s children? Certainly it would be an honor to be the child of the Commodore, if the Commodore were to ever have children. (Vyn did not allow himself to think much on the subject. The fantasies would keep his mind occupied for weeks.) But child was not a role Vyn wanted for himself. He was a Cadet. He was a member of the Vanguard. No child could ever boast such an esteemed position. And if the Commodore viewed him as a child… It would crush Vyn’s heart into pieces, when all he wanted was the Commodore’s pride and respect (and whatever tiny shred of his heart the Commodore would allow). Vyn ducked his head again when the evidence of their apparent crime was placed on the desk. As for what he had to say for himself, there was only the truth. “I thought the clothing would look lovely on Aliez, and the crown of flowers would please Fae-Fae, and…” He flushed with shame. They should have known better. They should have prepared themselves better, before venturing into such a confusing place. The Commodore would have known better. The Commodore never wouldn’t have gotten himself into a situation like this. The Space Cauldron No rush on a tag! The ORP is far more important! heart

Lyndin seemed to care little for the human, but he regarded him with what could have easily been perceived as guarded respect. He nodded to Aliez and Vyn, as if to silently reassure them that this was fine. And if he had to drain this human to unconsciousness to leave without an incident, of course he would. “They’re mine,” he said to the human, who was an inferior specimen, no doubt. They were young, but not children to him. They were older than this human, and obviously more well-mannered. He didn’t comment on how disrespectful he perceived the snacking. “I’m surprised to hear you haven’t filled out the report already. It would have been more effective to have that completed before my arrival, I think. I’d rather not waste my time while you do paperwork. I’m a busy man. And, I’m sure you are too. ‘All these dang TikTokers’ must keep you quite busy.” He looked to the two again, still checking to make sure they were fine, and then returned his attention to the security guard. “My boys are very well behaved. I’m sure this is just a misunderstanding. Why don’t I supply you with monetary compensation for your time and you leave the discipline to me.” Grateful for well-meaning and good-hearted Earthlings who shared their currency, he produced a few bills and set them on the table next to the collection of ‘stolen’ goods.

“Hey hey, I’m just following proper procedures,” the man scoffed and wiped his mouth with the back of his sleeve as he pulled open a drawer on his desk and pulled out a stack of forms. “Typically we just call the cops and they’d take these little hooligans to jail, but they’re so weird that I wanted to see what their parents were like,” the man shrugged, but it looked like he was considering the monetary compensation. “Well, I guess you’ll just have to convince me how busy you are. You know, I could have the cops pick you up too,” he suggested, although it looked as though he was taking an extra look at how imposing and large the strange man was. “I got plenty of complaints that these kids were harassing other customers. Causing quite a scene. Broke several things, too. Gotta take that into account for the damages we’re trying to take care of. I can pull up the video of them doing everything -- Oh, but you said you were pretty busy. I would hate to waste your time going over several different videos,” the man said, but turned to look as though he was willing to waste plenty of time rifling through videos that would only show Vyn and Aliez taking the couple items by mistake, due to their misunderstanding. Aliez could feel his face flush darker through the whole exchange. He didn’t want to say anything because it could cause more trouble for the Commodore, but the accusation that they were going around breaking things was too much. “We did no such thing. That is a lie,” he said through gritted teeth, already embarrassed. The man just laughed and dug another handful of his chips into his mouth. “Listen, son. We have video evidence. So why not shut up and let the adults discuss what we’re going to do with you and your brother.”

Vyn had no idea what a hooligan was, but it didn’t sound very pleasant. This was the worst experience of Vyn’s life by far. Even his admiration for the Commodore, and the effortless way in which the Commodore handled the situation, could not ease the nervous twisting of his stomach or the heavy weight of shame that settled over him. And now the security official was lying. Surely the Commodore wouldn’t believe him, considering the human’s disrespectful nature, but the thought that he might, just a little, kindled Vyn’s anxiety even further. “We weren’t harassing anyone,” he said, but his voice was weak, more a mumble than the firm argument it should have been. Vyn wanted to say they’d been making an effort to go unnoticed and left each establishment when they realized they were drawing too much attention to themselves, but he thought that might be some sort of an admission of guilt in this context. “And we didn’t break anything, we were just…” Vyn paused to swallow and quickly found he had no further explanation, so he shook his head and let the thought trail off.

Another muscle in Lyndin’s jaw twitched, but he kept a composed, peaceful smile for the guard. An expression that shifted to something softer, something far more real for the Cadets. Of course he trusted them; even if he’d had any room for suspicion or doubt in his heart, the conduct of this adult was enough to sway him. He didn’t trust him, he didn’t like him. He was the only child in this room, and it clearly showed. “Now, I’m sure we can all be respectful,” he said, and managed to keep his tone only slightly clipped when he spoke to the guard. He did not appreciate anyone telling his Cadets-- respectful, resourceful, courteous, mature, polite. “I’d like to be out of your hair before this escalates.” Escalates, because even with his mild temperament, he wasn’t sure if he had it in him not to just stun him and leave. He reached into his pocket and extracted a simple black wallet, pulling out a few large bills. Three hundred was more than adequate, and he wasn’t willing to part with anymore. He laid the bills flat on the table and pushed them forward. “I’m sure this is enough to cover the inconvenience.” He nodded to Aliez, and Vyn and tilted his head to the door; he wanted them up and ready to go. He was done negotiating; he was already putting away his wallet.

The security guard’s eyes widened almost victoriously as the bills were pulled out and placed on the table. “You know this is bribery, right? A huge offence. Could really land you in some big trouble. But you’re a reasonable guy, I can see that. Even if we were to agree to let this incident slide, that’s not nearly enough for the trouble these two caused. They could turn into a couple of real twisted perverts, if they’re not already. Standing and staring at women’s lingerie long enough to make people uncomfortable. And stealing them. I don’t know, that’s a little low for the trouble I’m going to have to go through to clean all this up. Listen to other customer complaints. You must know how it is,” the guard grinned, and coughed a few times to clear his throat of the chips he’d just inhaled. Aliez was in the process of standing from his chair as instructed by the Commodore, his face burning as he realized that the soft colorful fabric he intended to purchase was not something meant to be looked at by him and Vyn, apparently. “Come on,” he nudged Vyn, because he didn’t want to be in the Commodore’s way if there was any kind of additional confrontation, although it was annoying that this lying human wouldn’t just let them go. All they could do was listen to the Commodore’s orders, because he’d never led them wrong before, and Aliez knew he never would.

“There were children in that store,” Vyn argued. If the simple matter of him and Aliez, two adults, looking at clothing made some of the Earthlings uncomfortable, why did they allow children to wander around the store? If it was strictly for women, then why were men lingering around? Why was it strictly for women in the first place? Who made that decision? Who determined what was for one person and not the other, and what was and wasn’t appropriate to bring their young around? Earthlings were absurd. Vyn didn’t understand them at all, but he was too ashamed to question things further. More than anything, he wanted to leave. He wanted to get out of this place, return to their base of operations, and go about his normal duties, where everything but Earth’s environment was familiar. Vyn rose as soon as the Commodore indicated that he should do so. He shuffled closer to Aliez, then shuffled with Aliez toward the door. He didn’t expect the security official would like them to leave, but Vyn cared far more for what the Commodore thought than he did for this lying Earth man.

“ Oh,” Lyndin said, in a tone he rarely used. He sounded disappointed, and it was completely directed at this human. “I suppose, when you put it like that.” He reached for his pocket and withdrew his wallet again, only this time he brought the Source Stone with him. Absentmindedly he brushed his thumb over the surface, but he’d started draining even as he flipped it open. By the time he drew out two more large bills, he’d drained the guard. Not enough to hurt him, though really--he deserved it. If he’d cared, he might have made sure the guard was comfortable, that he wasn’t going to fall over and hurt himself. His patience was already exhausted. He didn’t take more energy than he had to, just to knock him out. Even if only for just a few moments. He returned the Source Stone and wallet to his pocket, but joined Vyn and Aliez at the door and passed each of them a bill. “You handled yourselves very well, but I think it’s time we take our leave. I want you to know that I’m proud of both of you for keeping so composed. Unfortunately, it would seem you’ve become acquainted with some of the shortcomings Earth has to offer. I neglected to teach you how they exchange currency. We’ll have a lesson now, somewhere more pleasant. Have you had lunch yet?” he asked, and continued walking with the obvious expectation that they would all leave now, whether the guard had wanted it or not.

The guard really stood no chance. One minute he was thinking about how much money he could manage to get out of this guy, and the next he was crumpled onto the floor, smushing the last of his chip bag in the process. Thankfully, it didn’t seem as though the Commodore was upset with either him nor Vyn, to which Aliez breathed a sigh of relief and took the bill when it was handed to him. He didn’t bother looking back at the guard. Not when the Commodore was right there and telling them they should leave and that he was proud of them and -- asking if they had lunch?? Aliez quickly exchanged a glance with Vyn before shuffling off after the Commodore. Maybe this wouldn’t be as horrible of an experience after all.
